The hardest part is trying to force the enemy king to the corner. If you play an engine, it for some reason always corner itself. But when you play a real human he will try to stay around the center. I just feel very hard to force enemy king to the edge of the board. I am bad at co ordinating knight and bishop to push him back. Opponent always just have 1 escape square 😭.
I'm on Lichess and it's great at staying in the centre. It took well over an hour to finish it (that engine makes different moves and the setup is different).

This explanation is the best I ever have seen on this mate. I have tried in the past many times to learn this, but gave up on it. After watching this video and learning the 3 patterns I was able to give made in 31 moves against SF on Lichess set on the highest level. You are a great teacher.

After 1 year playing chess I recently ended up on this endgame Bishop + Knight and I didn't know what to do, so it was a draw. Now after watching this video, I tryed against Stockfish level max and I mated it on my first try :D You have the gift to teach, keep up and thank you.
On my second try I had a harder time to get the king to the corner, then when I was ready to do the last maneuver (mate in 3) the engine said it was a draw because I reached 50 moves ☹

It took me a few tries against level 3 Stockfish, then I got it!. I started raising the difficulty and after 3 tries got it on max difficulty (8), I love the way you explain Chess!
I can do this checkmate against an engine because they play the best moves and I have learnt the responses. But humans do not play the best moves, I find it difficult to achieve the knight in knight out position. The easiest part of this video is the hardest for me. :).
Hello Paul! We have all been there. I recommend you simply come back to practice this checkmate from time to time and trust me you will find it easier every time until it simply becomes second-nature 💪
I just became a member today, Rooks on the 7th! to help support this amazing channel! This is my absolute favorite position in chess that I mastered back in 2014 or so. I even wrote 2 blogs online back in the day. This is the one position I consider myself to be a GM at 😆 and I'm usually on the top 10 leader board everyday worldwide at this checkmate (speed run)
tks for all the vedios dude with help of these in 3 days i came from 400 to 800 .......now will try to get to 1500 as soon as possible ....this needs a lot of practice puzzles can you suggest any website which gives 100s of puzzles topic wise for free other than lichess cause it dsent have it topicwise but randomly .......i think topic wise would be a good start than just random puzzles
hehe well congrats on that big jump! You will probably feel some resistance to get to 1000, but if you continue training and playing consistently, you will get there in no time. As far as the lichess tactics, I understand what you mean, but to be honest, you will benefit more from random tactics. Training tactics by topic is good when you are completely new to it and need to learn what each them is. If you already know that, it is better to train your brain for the real deal. In a real game we never know what pattern is present. It could be tough at the beginning, but you will get the hang of it. Even if you cannot find the answer and juts look at the answer after working hard on it, you will improve. If you still want to train tactics like this, I do not know of any free website, but you can always find pretty cheap tactics books on amazon. Hope this makes sense 👍

Ka7 Bc8 Kb8 Ne7 Ka7 Kc7 Ka8 Bb7+ Ka7 Nc6# No videos teach this. Some videos teach the diagonal method even where the king needs to be driven from corner to corner. It is best to know both methods, because the W method is best when the king goes to the corner, and the diagonal method us best when the king remains in the center. Sometimes it is possible to transpose into the W method. 18:40 even better here is Kf6 Ke8 Ne5 Kd8 Ke6 Kc7 Nd7 Kb7 Bc4, and we are in the W method.
I am really confused even after watching this lesson one main problem I face is that sometimes I just cant corner the king its like just a repitition opposition. Any tips on how to get better at doing that?
Hello! I know exactly what you mean. This is an endgame we should revisit from time to time because even if we get it right, we tend to forget it since it is not so common. When practicing it, try first using mainly your king to shoulder the other king. If that does not work at all, you can always rely on the position with the king, bishop and knight int the center like I explained in this video. Also, please let me know how it goes after revisiting it a few times. Every time you revisit it, you will find it easier and easier 👍
I'm with Mark C - I still find this super confusing.. from around 18.39 on you easily get the King to the edge - The engines I play have the King running circles around me - Can you please provide more info around ' the method of putting your knight and bishop in the center and then bring your king and go from there' - I'm sorry but compared to your other teachings, this is very vague. I have my Knight and bishop in the center on the correct coloured squares along with the king I like your teaching and hope that you can provide more detail on how to get the King to the edge with my pieces in the ideal position.

I understand what you mean, but like I have mentioned before, this endgame is taught at this point in. the course because we need to have a certain ability to calculate and visualize. For most of my students, it comes down to revisiting it from time to time and every time we do, it gets easier and easier. Luckily we do not get this often (I have gotten it 3 times in over 20 years) so, we have time to periodically revisit it until it becomes second nature. As you can see here in the comments section, other people have gotten it after watching the video once, but unfortunately this endgame is not as easy as the other basic checkmates we have covered (e.g Q + K vs K). Hope this makes sense 👍

Like you guys this video helped me nail down something I have struggled within a try or two in the chess engine. I have found and escape for the king I can’t seem to solve. It is as follows. Start with : Black king f8 White king f6 White knight f7 White bishop f5 Then the King escapes under the following scenario. 1. Bh7, Ke8 2. Ne5, Kd8 3. Ke6, Kc7 4. Nd7, Kb7 escapes
No, not really: you send your Elephant from h7 to *d3* - to prevent that ruffian's going to a6 - meanwhile your Horse is relishing the position they have attained on d7: keeping everything that is their responsibility, b6 and c5 included, under fire. If that stupid black tyrant is stubborn enough to push in the same direction - i.e. lands on c6 - the faster running beast of yours simply makes a *waiting move* - anywhere along the a6-f1 diagonal (except for *b5,* naturally, lest he be butchered) - and then to *b5* making the opposing Royal Majesty completely walled up, and compelled to give up d6 to your Royalty - on the next move (if he chooses to retreat back to b7), or one move after (if his choice should be c7). Then on with your "knight in - knight out" (or if the black intriguant attempts to do funny things - darts back in the direction of h8 - your Ecclesiastic is easily in time to occupy f7, i.e. what our teacher calls the "ideal position").
I want to share with you guys, today I won by simplification just counting the amount of pawns, because I had one extra pawn and they were in a good position I could won the game by promoting my extra pawn to a Queen.
@Ramirez, at 16:15 Black's best defence is ...Kc7, heading for b6 and eventually as far as b4!! after which I doubt you know the 18-move procedure with the Knight on B1!! So from position: WK-D6 B-D5 N-E4 , BK on B5 ... and basically the only way to mate is playing Ne4-c3 followed by Nc3-b1 !!! This is much more difficult - infinitely more, if you don't know how to re-route the D4 Knight, to stop the BK heading towards A4/B4/B3 -- Ke5 was very committal and a perfect example that mobility is priority No.1 for the BK, not moving towards the most passive position on the board, in the corner.
P.S.- I understand that diving this deeply into this might take up too much of your time, but if you want, I can post a video response which would make it all crystal clear instead of typing variations, the visuals are very important with this. Thank you.
Hello! Excellent point. You are totally right. That's why we should practice both alternatives against the engine. We need to be prepared for either case. The main ideas explained in this lesson along with the ability to calculate should allow us to win this endgame, but it is true it could turn difficult -specially in time pressure. That's the reason why I did not teach this checkmate early in the course like I did with other basic checkmates such as Queen and King vs King. Thanks a lot for taking the time to point this out 👍
@@NMRobertRamirez- Hi Robert, well the point with the modern engines is that they are programmed (Lichess e.g), Stockfish too, to walk straight to the "Wrong Corner", so you would have to play both sides to train this, and it is more than difficult if you don't know where to place the Knight in the first phase of the procedure, which in this case would be D3, and the Bishop on A2-G7 diagonal, WK working from the right side to move the BK to the left, towards A8... This procedure is called the Deletang Method, and my point is that without getting a firm grip on this method, you and neither any of your students would be able to mate me within 50 moves, because I would play smart defence, meaning I would not walk into the corner, into a set-play that indeed can just be memorized. Maybe an extremely talented kid could work this "Geometric Dance" out over the board, but even that is highly unlikely... But if you catch on to the principles quickly, it is very much fun and limitlessly educational . Thank you for lesson! I mostly can do a checkmate with bishop and knight but i still struggle a bit to reach the ideal position. Sometimes opponent king escapes or i wonder what happened if my opponent tries to escape that i dont know how to respond.

I practiced for ages, but for the life of me, I can't manage to reliably corral the king to the edge of the board... if the king geta there, I usually manage to reach mate, unless the 50 move rule kicks in, though blocking the escape route is still confusing sometimes.
Absolutely! As a matter of fact, this is a lesson you can go over and revisit from time to time until you fully get it. I know it could be tricky and truth is it's pretty unlikely you will have to use it soon. But, if you ever have to, you should know how 👍😎
I played with 2400 elo rated SOS 5.1 for arena but it couldn't checkmate me with bishop & knight in 40 mins in 50 moves,I wonder how u claim that knight bishop checkmates are possible!
Hello! It is interesting that SOS could not get it done. This is not something I made up. I just learned how to do it and have been able to deliver it. You will find it in books and everyone should learn the right technique. Even if it seems complicated at first, feel free to revisit it from time to time until you get the hang of it 👍

I still find this super confusing... I cannot set up the ideal position to begin with, the king always escapes 2 bishops was very clear and easy, but this is confusing for me
what I mean is, I know how to drag the king from one corner to another and I know how to checkmate him once he is in the right colour corner, but I can't get the king to the corner to begin with... He always manages to escape
If it makes you feel better, we all go through that 😅 Did you try the method of putting your knight and bishop in the center and then bring your king and go from there? Anyways, this is a checkmate that you will understand more every time you revisit it. Try to do it once a week or so until you learn it by heart. If you have not gotten it under control in 4 week, please let me know 👍

LOL -- I ran into a bishop/knight/king vs. king scenario against a stockfish bot and this is a lesson I skipped!!!!! Had to settle for the 50 move draw rule.

Try to play both sides by yourself. The key is to build a firewall with all three pieces, but your king is the most important one.

The knight-in-knight-out method (W method) is only applicable when the king goes to the wrong corner. When the king avoids both corners, the diagonal method should be used: 1. Cut the king off inside the seven square diagonal, 2. Cut the king off inside the five square diagonal, 3. Cut the king off inside the three square diagonal, 4. mate.

No videos teach this. Some videos teach the diagonal method even where the king needs to be driven from corner to corner. It is best to know both methods, because the W method is best when the king goes to the corner, and the diagonal method us best when the king remains in the center.
Sometimes it is possible to transpose into the W method. 18:40 even better here is Kf6 Ke8 Ne5 Kd8 Ke6 Kc7 Nd7 Kb7 Bc4, and we are in the W method.
I am really confused even after watching this lesson one main problem I face is that sometimes I just cant corner the king its like just a repitition opposition. Any tips on how to get better at doing that?
Hello! I know exactly what you mean. This is an endgame we should revisit from time to time because even if we get it right, we tend to forget it since it is not so common.
When practicing it, try first using mainly your king to shoulder the other king. If that does not work at all, you can always rely on the position with the king, bishop and knight int the center like I explained in this video.
Also, please let me know how it goes after revisiting it a few times. Every time you revisit it, you will find it easier and easier 👍

I'm with Mark C - I still find this super confusing.. from around 18.39 on you easily get the King to the edge - The engines I play have the King running circles around me - Can you please provide more info around ' the method of putting your knight and bishop in the center and then bring your king and go from there' - I'm sorry but compared to your other teachings, this is very vague. I have my Knight and bishop in the center on the correct coloured squares along with the king I like your teaching and hope that you can provide more detail on how to get the King to the edge with my pieces in the ideal position.

I understand what you mean, but like I have mentioned before, this endgame is taught at this point in. the course because we need to have a certain ability to calculate and visualize. For most of my students, it comes down to revisiting it from time to time and every time we do, it gets easier and easier. Luckily we do not get this often (I have gotten it 3 times in over 20 years) so, we have time to periodically revisit it until it becomes second nature. As you can see here in the comments section, other people have gotten it after watching the video once, but unfortunately this endgame is not as easy as the other basic checkmates we have covered (e.g Q + K vs K). Hope this makes sense 👍

Like you guys this video helped me nail down something I have struggled within a try or two in the chess engine. I have found and escape for the king I can’t seem to solve. It is as follows.
Start with :
Black king f8
White king f6
White knight f7
White bishop f5
Then the King escapes under the following scenario.
1. Bh7, Ke8
2. Ne5, Kd8
3. Ke6, Kc7
4. Nd7, Kb7 escapes
No, not really: you send your Elephant from h7 to *d3* - to prevent that ruffian's going to a6 - meanwhile your Horse is relishing the position they have attained on d7: keeping everything that is their responsibility, b6 and c5 included, under fire. If that stupid black tyrant is stubborn enough to push in the same direction - i.e. lands on c6 - the faster running beast of yours simply makes a *waiting move* - anywhere along the a6-f1 diagonal (except for *b5,* naturally, lest he be butchered) - and then to *b5* making the opposing Royal Majesty completely walled up, and compelled to give up d6 to your Royalty - on the next move (if he chooses to retreat back to b7), or one move after (if his choice should be c7). Then on with your "knight in - knight out" (or if the black intriguant attempts to do funny things - darts back in the direction of h8 - your Ecclesiastic is easily in time to occupy f7, i.e. what our teacher calls the "ideal position").

I want to share with you guys, today I won by simplification just counting the amount of pawns, because I had one extra pawn and they were in a good position I could won the game by promoting my extra pawn to a Queen.

@Ramirez, at 16:15 Black's best defence is ...Kc7, heading for b6 and eventually as far as b4!! after which I doubt you know the 18-move procedure with the Knight on B1!! So from position: WK-D6 B-D5 N-E4 , BK on B5 ... and basically the only way to mate is playing Ne4-c3 followed by Nc3-b1 !!!
This is much more difficult - infinitely more, if you don't know how to re-route the D4 Knight, to stop the BK heading towards A4/B4/B3 -- Ke5 was very committal and a perfect example that mobility is priority No.1 for the BK, not moving towards the most passive position on the board, in the corner.
P.S.- I understand that diving this deeply into this might take up too much of your time, but if you want, I can post a video response which would make it all crystal clear instead of typing variations, the visuals are very important with this. Thank you.
Hello! Excellent point. You are totally right. That's why we should practice both alternatives against the engine. We need to be prepared for either case. The main ideas explained in this lesson along with the ability to calculate should allow us to win this endgame, but it is true it could turn difficult -specially in time pressure.
That's the reason why I did not teach this checkmate early in the course like I did with other basic checkmates such as Queen and King vs King.

@@NMRobertRamirez- Hi Robert, well the point with the modern engines is that they are programmed (Lichess e.g), Stockfish too, to walk straight to the "Wrong Corner", so you would have to play both sides to train this, and it is more than difficult if you don't know where to place the Knight in the first phase of the procedure, which in this case would be D3, and the Bishop on A2-G7 diagonal, WK working from the right side to move the BK to the left, towards A8... This procedure is called the Deletang Method, and my point is that without getting a firm grip on this method, you and neither any of your students would be able to mate me within 50 moves, because I would play smart defence, meaning I would not walk into the corner, into a set-play that indeed can just be memorized. Maybe an extremely talented kid could work this "Geometric Dance" out over the board, but even that is highly unlikely... But if you catch on to the principles quickly, it is very much fun and limitlessly educational . Here is a link to a Majnu tutorial on this Deletang method:

I practiced for ages, but for the life of me, I can't manage to reliably corral the king to the edge of the board... if the king geta there, I usually manage to reach mate, unless the 50 move rule kicks in, though blocking the escape route is still confusing sometimes.

I played with 2400 elo rated SOS 5.1 for arena but it couldn't checkmate me with bishop & knight in 40 mins in 50 moves,I wonder how u claim that knight bishop checkmates are possible!
Hello! It is interesting that SOS could not get it done. This is not something I made up. I just learned how to do it and have been able to deliver it. You will find it in books and everyone should learn the right technique. Even if it seems complicated at first, feel free to revisit it from time to time until you get the hang of it 👍

2 bishops was very clear and easy, but this is confusing for me
what I mean is, I know how to drag the king from one corner to another and I know how to checkmate him once he is in the right colour corner, but I can't get the king to the corner to begin with... He always manages to escape
If it makes you feel better, we all go through that 😅 Did you try the method of putting your knight and bishop in the center and then bring your king and go from there? Anyways, this is a checkmate that you will understand more every time you revisit it. Try to do it once a week or so until you learn it by heart.

LOL -- I ran into a bishop/knight/king vs. king scenario against a stockfish bot and this is a lesson I skipped!!!!! Had to settle for the 50 move draw rule.
