That is the easiest part. Just get your king as close as you can to the king, and when you can't get any closer, bring your bishop and knight closer to the king. Little by little, the king will get pushed back, pretty easily. But if you're struggling, I guess you can use the L shape he describes here.
Oh my god I've done the Lichess tutorial for this so many times and it never stuck. One watch of this 12 minute video and now I can execute the checkmate on stockfish in under 30s. Insanely good instruction here.

For people having a tough time getting the king to the edge of the board I learned this great pattern on Thechessnetwork's channel: simply start by putting your 3 pieces on the four central squares, with the Knight being on the same colour square as your Bishop and the King complementing them on the other coloyr square. This automatically forces the opponent's King towards the edge of the edge of the board and you can take it from there.
Thanks Mr Hambleton. You absolutely helped me. I thought this wouldnt occur but in my otb tourney this very position happened. If i didnt look at your vid on the day of the tourney, it was safe to assume the game was a stale draw
I learned the Déletang's Triangles method a couple years ago and got comfortable with that. But since Gothamchess and Chessbrah used this other method in their demonstrations I'm also trying it out. I tried it out a couple times against an engine and I must say I have trouble finding back into the pattern when at the position like 6:49 if the opponent instead of Kc6, goes Kb7. I checked out what the best moves are according to the engine afterward, but having a hard time finding back to the pattern where the enemy King was always kept on the side of the board.
Update: I think I'm getting the hang of it. With both King moves the Bishop d3 then b5 and our King can come closer. This method mates about 8 moves faster than when I do the triangle method. (edit: ok 8 moves faster may have just been a lucky try one time, maybe on average 5 moves faster. Triangle method is ca. 34 moves when all pieces start from opposite sides of the board and this method is ca. 29 moves)
@@scepgineer Exactly, as long as our bishop is on the a6-f1 diagonal the enemy king only escape route is through b8: in that case we go back to the pattern. If the enemy king decides to stay in the corner I would suggest just bringing over our king. The use of waiting moves with the bishop is also extremely important.

It worked. I just did it for the first time. I tried to do it many times before using other resources, but I always failed. The way you showed the pattern of the king and knight working together with the bishop supporting really made it simple.
great tutorial. i can only checkmate in the configuration presented on the video thou (i'm white, and i got the light-squared bishop). and then i checkmate him in the upper left corner. i tried with the dark-squared bishop, and it seems as though the pattern is different.
It's the same pattern - with a dark squared bishop you'll need to checkmate on a dark squared corner though. Aman showed how to corral the king along the eighth rank, if you need to corral it along the 'a' or 'h' files just imagine the same pattern rotated 90 degrees.
Such an amazing job explaining. I've tried to learn and forgotten this every time but the way here explains I feel I will always remember. Aman is such a brilliant steamer and teacher props. Better than Eric lol

Ok let me say this was one of the hardest challenges I have ever done in anything. I spent an entire day in frustration. I first thought this technique must be flawed and watched a few others vids on this. Really the hardest thing was corralling the king successfully and doing this all in under 50 move draw rule. It turns out this was indeed the best instruction on this I also watched the vid where you do these in puzzle rush and holy crap you're good! Perhaps you can demonstrate efficient corralling of the enemy king with bishop, night and king on Twitch one day as the computer and humans can still squirm out using your pattern. How many games have you played roughly? I'm only 2,000 games in and I've never once had to do this mate, not that I could ;) With this video I am goin to get it down. I'm sure of it. Great simple method!

This is basically one of those things which technically helps you fully "learn" chess. Once you are done being able to checkmate with any tough combination of pieces, you technically are done with the non-opponent-related things which would make winning "impossible" for you. Now it's just about not letting the opponent put you in a position where you can't win.
Would you elaborate a bit on your 2nd paragraph? Specifically what do you mean about "non opponent things " making winning "impossible " for you....did you mean making losing impossible or am I missing something? Thank you.
@@loc7909 I was referring to the fundamental things that can cause you a loss through sole ignorance over the opponent being good. Not being able to checkmate with certain pieces makes a non-accidental victory impossible. Getting into intermediate territory in chess is about preventing reoccuring scenarios where you have to guess because there's no time for you to figure out how to do a certain thing.
