That is sooooo interesting, how technical this mate is, and how close it rides next to both drawing and stalemating, even though you're 6 points of material up!
This was explained brilliantly. I just practiced it on Lichess and cleared all 3 exercises (light bishop, dark bishop and board rotated) in as many tries.
Tarrasch's explanation of this mate in "The Game of Chess" made it so easy for me. He explains clearly and simply the duty of each piece. I recommend it highly.
Finally a really good video on this mate!!! Thank you very much!! Today I had this mate in a blitz game and I did it well and fast because i saw your video months ago! Really good job!!!
Brilliant Video. I was able to successfully execute the mate against the computer on my second try after watching the video. Haven't seen anyone explain it better. I am glad to have found this channel.
This is the one that really made it click for me - I've watched a bunch of these videos but now after watching this 3 times I've finally got my first Knight + Bishop checkmates. Thank you!
This is just great. I've struggled so much to learn this from other videos or the Lichess trainer with no success and you've just taught me how to do it reasonably well in half an hour.
i finally managed to mate with bishop and knight. in my opinion this is the best video i could find, explaining what the crucial points are(especially all the waiting moves at the right time!) thank you very much!
the class is excellent! the way it has been structured. The presentation is even better. The instructor has really good presentation skills, is a natural and will probably with more experience get a LOT better. I would like to request an advanced class on this subject where you look at more subtleties like what the best/efficient move is and why. For example, the building of a fence and how to use it most efficiently against the King.
I learned a different way to do this mate but it’s a very similar start with an alternative finish. But the point is, I finally understand how to use these pieces together and I wouldn’t have ever thought to learn this if you didn’t put it in your series. I have always struggled in the end game and I am really looking forward to the rest of this series!

thank you so much bro, i watched some videos, but the lights on when i watched your videos (your style of teaching i guess) and i now can mate in 36 moves...
Excellent work, I can't say anything. you make it easier for understanding (the W manoeuvre). now I can mate with a knight and Bishop. just keep going. Thanks a lot 💜.
I also learned the triangle mate at the end, It make the ending of this mating sequence easier to remember and more automatic. However I think this method may shave a few moves off the mate.
At 12:12 Be4+?? is a gross blunder. If white plays 1.Be4+??, then black plays Kb5, and escapes toward the other dark squared corner. This is a crucial time loss and the game will most likely be drawn due to the 50 move rule. White must play 1.Bd3 instead keeping the black king from escaping through b5 to the other wrong corner. Also, one move prior, after 1.Nd7, black should not play Kd8, as it just allows white to more easily set up the same position that forced him from the corner via 1.Kd6 Ke8 2.Bg6+ Kd8 3.Bf7. After 1.Nd7 Kc6 is a lot more resilient, and white has to play 2.Bd3 as discussed above. Kc7 will be next, followed by the sequence 3.Ke7 Kc6 4.Bc4 Kc7 5.Bd5 Kc8 6.Bc6 Kd8 7.Bb7 Ke8 8.Bd5 Kd8 9.Bf7, and now you have created the same setup used to push the black king from the corner as before; this time, however, the black king made you work for it. The rest is easy; play follows Kc8 10.Nc5 Kb8 11.Kc6 Kc8 12.Nb7 Kb8 13.Kb6 Kc8 14.Bf5+ Kb8 15.Bd7 Ka8 16.Nc5 Kb8 17.Na6+ Ka8 18.Bc6#.
@A.S TRICKSHOTS ...Not as sad as the time you just wasted with your disrespectful reply. Do you get a dopamine rush from attempting to bring others down? You must, since you felt the need to comment something so ridiculous.
Great video. A slight mistake at 12:09 though. If the king goes to c6 your bishop should cover the escape square on b5 via Bd3. If he goes back to Kc7 only then do you play Be4 which forces the king to the 8th rank. If he plays Kb7 instead of Kc7 you go Kd6 again forcing him to the 8th rank (or a7 in which case Kc6 forces his king to a8 and you then continue the knight manuver).
I heard and read that expert and master rated players ended up drawing or losing on this ending in a tournament. Or in other words they could not complete the ending in the tournament. I respect that you tried to do this live for the viewers just to show how it feels to do it with resistance.
You are right it is complicated and rarely happens. In my lifetime of playing chess I don’t remember this ending happening unless I made it happen. Same with King and Queen vs King and Rook. If I were a chess coach I would not emphasize or expect my students to know this ending but will teach it to boost their confidence. Many would argue there is no need to study and practice those two endings but I will study because I am enthusiast.
Unfortunately, when you move Nd7, the king can go to b7. It is difficult to find the right move here. If you could help me out with this one I would very much be obliged.
24:34 if you understand the first example, when you reached this second example, you can just ** tilt your head right** and imagine you are playing first example, even if i just learned this mate, i surprised stephen's trying to imagine the pattern he already known :)
at the first time i tried the black bishop checkmate a few minutes ago, and i cant believe at the first try i checkmated the stockfish :) thank you so much stephen, love you... (yes i tilted my head a little bit :) )
But at 12.06: If the king goes to c6 and you check it with the bishop from e4, won't it be able to escape to b5? Btw Stockfish says to put the bishop on d3 instead, restraining and not checking. Thanks for these marvellous videos btw. I'm a huge fan. You're making alot of chess theory easily available and understandable. It's a huge help.
I have heard that some of the positions require even 58 moves to commit a checkmate with proper play of course :), so sometimes it is only a draw (if the weaker king defends properly). There was some game by World Champion were he asked how many moves without a capture and a pawn move does he have - he was thinking there are 75 piece move rule - not 50 moves :), but there were no best play and he finished in 50 moves :)
My mistake, not 58 but it is 30-40 moves, as Jan Almighty says :), his source is unknown. And the other thing is it is said that now fide rules had changed and you have to move 75 times for a draw, without a capture and a pawn move. I remember the 58 number because it was calculated by the father of Unix operating system as a forced win for some position. That shows that 50 move rule was not enough.
Hello Stjepan, thank you for this and all your other videos. They are really great. By far the best on TH-cam in my opinion!! I'll will try this technique now. I used to train the "triangle" technique that lichess teaches you and which I believe is easier, but yours seems faster.. Where did you learn this from? All the best!!
The trouble you had was not necessary! When you have the Black King on the edge in opposition, with yedgeKnight as the sandwich filling, then start the 'W' manoeuvres. You started brilliantly, but then forgot to start the 'W' when you got opposition position near the corner. There is a triangular method also which I should love to learn too.
@Hanging pawns, first of all good job but if you really want to be sure you know it, you should set up it up where you can play against the computer, that's how you truly know if you know it or not, the computer will make moves that you may not be expecting it to make.....it's rough I know, I went through it, see my comment below.
at 12:10 you said if Kc6 then Be4+ but that allows the king to go to b5 and running away. were you mistaken and you meant to go Bd3 instead to prevent the king to go b5 and forcing him to go back because he has no squares? But even after that I think it will get trick if Kb2
Hi Stjepan. Nice video. But there seems to be a lot of memorization in this ending. I may learn it now and practice but without regular practice, the chances are I will forget it soon. Also, this ending is super uncommon, so practicing it seems like a lot of time investment for almost no gain. Also, I think you should use the circles in your videos more, to show which squares are controlled by White and which are possible squares for Black, etc. You can even have multiple colored circles. In lichess, you press right mouse button (RMB) for green circle, shift + RMB (red circle), alt + RMB (blue circle) and shift + alt + RMB (yellow circle).
That is not really true about the usefulness of this technique. It can be applied in endings with pawns too, and the restriction and control with minor pieces is usefull in the middlegame more so than in the endgame. Try using the technique in every position, that's the way to broaden your understanding. As for the circles, I agree:)
I just spent about 6 or 7 hours on it and I'm still on it, I started at around 8:30 this morning and it's a little over 3:30 so I don't know how many hours on it. The problem is the variations, most authors don't cover enough variations, so it's like, "What if" ...the king goes here or there, then what? .....I don't expect them to cover ever variation but they should cover a few, I have the general idea thanks to studying for all that time and yes with some frustration and even intuition and I did a TON of "What ifs" myself, u should have seen the dense amount of variations I had on the analysis board on "Chess.com" ..... Also for anyone struggling with this, you're going to have a difficult time either way you slice it but there is another method called the Deletang Method, or "Triangle Method", so you can try that if you don't like the "W" method.

Your initial position is not the "worst" position for white because the black king is in the corner. The "mating net" only begins once the black king has been forced to the edge/corner of the board. If the king runs directly to the corner that is not commanded by the bishop, that actually makes white's job easier because the "mating net" starts there. Black's plan should be to fight to stay in the MIDDLE of the board as long as possible and force white to waste as many moves as possible trying to figure out how to *force* the king to the edge/corner. Black should never voluntarily go to the edge unless forced to do so. Knowing the "w method" doesn't help *unless* you can first force the black king to the edge of the board. And, even then, white needs to have his bishop and knight on very specific squares to begin the "w method." Here is my challenge to those who have navigated to this site with the intent of learning this mate. Once you are confident you understand the "w method", set up a board and place the black king in one of the center four squares. Put all three white pieces on the side of the board. That's the worst position! Have a chess engine play for black. You will notice that the engine will fight to stay in the center. You will also notice that you're going to be frustrated in trying to force the king to the edge of the board. The chess engine isn't going to make a beeline for the wrong-colored corner. It's going to make you *force* it there.
You put the black king is the perfect position My opponents keeps trying to stay in the center How do you force him to go to the dark square? That's not being resilient. That's giving up (running to back rank) Being Resilient means he stays in the center and you have to force him into the corner
Hi. What if black king not going to oposite color of bishop corner, if decide stay in the center long as possible there is chance to chase from center? I personal can not make it
Excellent video and wonderful explanation! Just a quick question: How do you make money off youtube, since now it's your full-time job. Since you don't have 100K subscribers yet, you're not verified, and you dont make any money. Or are you planning on making money just off patreon?

And, even then, white needs to have his bishop and knight on very specific squares to begin the "w method."
Here is my challenge to those who have navigated to this site with the intent of learning this mate.
You put the black king is the perfect position
My opponents keeps trying to stay in the center
How do you force him to go to the dark square?
That's not being resilient. That's giving up (running to back rank)
Being Resilient means he stays in the center and you have to force him into the corner
You can also practice these ending in Lichess.
Against Stockfish 12 engine.
Hi. What if black king not going to oposite color of bishop corner, if decide stay in the center long as possible there is chance to chase from center? I personal can not make it
Edi W you’ll have to use the Delétang’s net then I guess
Bro is totally cheating by putting his hands over the eyes. 😂 Can't help myself, I had to tease you. LOL. Good content ❤ Subscribed!
Is there in Russia always raining just asking coz noise is coming but it's fine, love from India sir ❤
I have a tough time setting up the dream position of knight/king/bishop on the f or c file because the black king is constantly escaping
please help with king b7 after u move Nd7...
Do you recommend training against stockfish? It gets even harder
You can if you'd like, but it would be better to train against yourself at first.
Well done. :)
06:15 Waiting move? What for? It is much better to play Nf7 ☺
11:42 it was supposed to be knight not king e7
You added so many extra waiting moves by not moving the king into opposition.
Excellent video and wonderful explanation!
Just a quick question: How do you make money off youtube, since now it's your full-time job. Since you don't have 100K subscribers yet, you're not verified, and you dont make any money. Or are you planning on making money just off patreon?
Well, I do have ads on the channel and I plan to use them to monetize the videos. And the Patreon account is, ideally, what will help sustain my life and my career. And I'm glad you like the vid:)
I am great fan of your videos but this one not working for me as opponent King escapes from C7 square .

Check out chessnetwork Jerry and The Delatange Method as a possible more logical and easy to remember way. Not so many variations for the defender in that method.
I mostly use the three rooks endgame so that if the king trys to escape I use me rook
