"Easy" is the complete opposite of the difficulty of this mate. It is in fact the MOST difficult of ALL mates, taking weeks of daily practice to master it. It's only possible if the extra pawn is beyond a certain square and that square depends on which file it's on, and all this depends if there's only 1 pawn, if more than 1 exist then more requirements need to met to decide if the position is a win or a draw. Someone in the comments asked a good question, so I'm just gonna copy my answer here: In the position at 6:29 1...Kd8 is a more resilient defense than 1...Kf8. So if Black goes 1...Kd8 you follow him 2. Ke6 Kc7, and now 3. Nd7. Notice how even though it seems like the black King is escaping, in reality he can't really go far. So black will go either 3...Kb7 or 3...Kc6, and the important move to remember here in both cases is 4. Bd3! By taking this diagonal, you cut the black king's escape route. I'm going to cut these two lines into two parts, because they are very similar, but it might get confusing to follow two lines simultaneously. So... 3...Kb7 4. Bd3 Kc6 5. Bf1 (or anywhere on the f1-a6 diagonal except of course b5) 5...Kc7 6. Bb5. And now you see the black king is forced back into the back rank. (If he goes 6... Kb7 you follow 7. Kd6 and once again he has to go to the back rank) Now after say 6...Kd8 you go 7. Kd6 Ke8 8. Bc4 Kd8 9. Bf7 and from here it's pretty straight forward. 9...Kc8 10. Nc5 Kd8 (notice how 10...Kb8 does not help black, he can't escape that way anymore) 11. Nb7+ Kc8 12. Kc6 Kb8 13.Kb6 Kc8 14. Be6+ Kb8 15. Bf5 Ka8 16. Nc5 Kb8 17. Na6+ Ka8 18. Be4# 3...Kc6 4. There are a few moves in these sequences where a tablebase would give you improvements as checkmate *could* be achieved 1 or 2 moves faster, but I tried to keep this method as systematic as possible to make it easy to follow and remember.
Yes, exactly. It is a good video, but this line (the one after Kd8) is really the crucial one and should be included. When I learned this method many years ago, I found this the most difficult part to remember and when I explained it to other players I found that almost everyone - even the very good ones - were struggling at this point, thinking they must have done something wrong beforehand. It might also be worth mentioning, that a mistake during the first phase (driving the king to the edge) is usually not very dramatic, you will lose two or three moves, whereas the consequences of a mistake later on might be more serious (with respect to the 50-move-rule, I mean).

you don't need to remember sequence of moves. you just need to understand how to cooperate your pieces. try it yourself and try to visualize "wall" that you are making rest is just pushing his king with your king until he is at the edge of the board. so 1) push him to edge 2) push him to corner with same color as your bishop 3) checkmate in several moves

The game, non other than: Akiba Rubinstein vs Aron Nimzowitsch of the last round, with Rubinstein half a point behind Nimzowitsch. Rubinstein was able to win the game and therefore the tournament. Nimzowitsch himself considered that game his worst defeat ever! It would be great if you could cover such an epic game, it's been a while since you covered classic games of the past outside the context of a saga, so it would be refreshing if you could do that!

For those wondering what to do at 6:28 if Black tries Kd8-c7-c6, white should play Ke6, Nd7 and Bd3 which creates a blockade on a6, b6, b5, c5 and d5 - the black king cannot go further than c6. Waste a move with Be2 and the king has to retreat to c7. Bf3 then forces the black king to the back rank again allowing which allows the push towards a8.

I'm fairly new to actually playing chess and trying to get better, It's quite useful to see videos like this as I often find my opponent resigning therefore not giving me the endgame practice that I need.

I think there is one critical "trick" missing at 6:30 For the case that Black is not going Kf8, but voluntarily to Kd8, trying to escape to a1 via c7. In this case you go ... Kd8 Ke6 Kc7 Nd7 nevertheless! ... Kc6 Bd3! Blocking the black King to escape to a1. This position has to be remembered. ... Kc7 Be4 Kd8 (...Kc8 Kd6 Kd8 Bg6) Ke6 an so on... (Ke8 is met by Bg6+) Cheerio!
setting up the wall first such that the knight is in a position to check the opponent king when it is in the wrong corner is the key part of this method that makes it a lot more easier than the other methods that mention triangulation and whatnot. thanks agadmator, that was super intuitive!

I'll just accept not to simplify into Bishop and Knight ending if ahead, and GLADLY simplify into Bishop and Knight if behind. Believe it or not, if the superior side plays the wrong move, the losing side can FORCE a draw according to Stockfish.

6:29 You didn't show what happens when the king tries to go the other way, it can get quite tricky because the king can easily escape if you don't play all the right moves. I recommend Danny Rensch's tutorial for this if you really wanna learn this checkmate.

That was a very good explanation, but you didn't mention what if he goes to d8 at 6:26, then there is another concept that we have to use our knight and bishop to create a staircase. I learned it from another video I can now mate in at least 33 or 34 moves from any position. Thanks!
Ok, so the triangles and knight zig-zag have been in my memory as parts of how to do this, but the central formation you just showed combined with opposition finally tie everything together for me in a way that makes this consistently possible, after years of not getting it. It feels so rewarding, thank you, I will practice with family and friends, and I know one day in a tournament game I'll be forced to know this. Thank you again, I can also now teach this to my students.
I reckon most 1700s would fail to find a mate against robust defence, unless they've specifically learnt a technique. I say this as a ~1600 :) I've only had this position as the defending side, and my opponent got me to the edge of the board but hung a fork trying to stop me escaping while trying to avoid threefold repetition.
Me:"I'm going to win, I've got king and two bishops against your lone king, you should resign." Opponent:"But they have to be opposite colour bishops...."
It was for me the first time I tried this after watching video on it. Took a while to encounter after video but I thought I had the gist of it, but I was wrong. King kept slipping away to wrong corner.

Great video Antonio, but although counterintuitive, it's a much better try for black to run from e8 to d8 instead of f8 when the white king, knight, and bishop are on the squares f6, e5, and h7, respectively. It takes a lot of tecnique to stop the king from escaping, but with the moves 1.Ke6 Kc7 2.Nd7 Kc6 3.Bd3 (Critical to keeping the black king confined to the correct corner!) Kc7 4.Be4 (another critical move taking away even more flight squares and forcing him back to c8 or d8) Kd8 5.Kd6 Ke8 6.Bg6+ Kd8 7.Bf7 (another critical waiting move which creates the same king, knight and bishop vice that was used to push him closer to the correct corner) Kc8 8.Nc5 Kd8 9.Nb7+ Kc8 10. Kc6 Kb8 11.Kb6 Kc8 (one last ditch effort to try to escape) 12.Be6+ Kb8 13.Bd7 (once again setting up the king knight and bishop in the same position we used to push the black king from the wrong corner: now he is confined to a8 and b8) Ka8 14.Nc5 Kb8 15.Na6+ Ka8 16.Bc6#. that is actually worse for black. but it is common tactic, because it is not as "simple" so given position in timestamp: W: Kf6 Ne5 Bh7 B: Ke8 if black goes 1... Kd8 (instead of Kf8 as in video) in hope of escaping, correct way is to cut of him with 2. Be4 with the idea that if black "continues to run" 2. ... Kc7 you reply with 3. Nc4 .. creating "wall" b6 c6 d6 and you push him with king via 7th rank
If you suspect that your opponent doesn't know how to checkmate with knight and a bishop it's a good idea to play. But not at the higher ELO obviously.
This was the method I was originally worked out (my father said "first you have to force the king to the side, then to the corner; a book said that you can't stop the king from running into the wrong corner first") but every few years I'd forget how to do it. And I'm not as clever as I once was. But everywhere I look, they teach the triangle method, so thank you for those of us who learned it the old fashioned way.

i think the triangle is easier for beginners, you always have the same setup for knight and bishop, just getting a smaller triangle until you hit the corner, and opponent king moves are not so relevant, is just about doing the knight and bishop 1 square away triangle and chasing the king with your king until you make a smaller triangle, this method in the video is a better/more efficient technique, but you have to be aware of the opponent king's moves to not let it escape. But i don't know, some people might find this mate easier
Great video. It’s many years since I read Paul Keres’ Practical Chess Endings and I never could understand his description of mating with B & N. However, after your explanation followed by some practice against Stockfish, I find it really is pretty straightforward!
This is my favourite endgame. It shows how complicated and beautiful can be chess with only 4 pieces on the board. I regularly practice this endgame and I can do it in less than 3 minutes. I won this endgame twice in blitz games. Knowing the best defense can earn sweet half-points when the opponent is unaware of the required techique. Indeed, it is a rare endgame, but it worths every second spent to study it, purely for its artistic value. It also gives confidence to know it. Thank you for the video!

Anyone would and should resign in that situation unless you're playing against a complete beginner (or have a chance to flag your opponent).

Believe it or not, if the superior side plays the wrong move, the losing side can FORCE a draw according to Stockfish.
This is the sort of thing that you can do well if you know the pattern, comes with experience.

6:29 You didn't show what happens when the king tries to go the other way, it can get quite tricky because the king can easily escape if you don't play all the right moves. I recommend Danny Rensch's tutorial for this if you really wanna learn this checkmate.

The 50 move rule now is actually 50 moves without taking anything
Or without moving a pawn. ie. you don't need to take anything as long as you have a pawn and move it. But obviously white doesn't have a pawn here.
If you had the luxury of having a pawn at a lonely side of the board, just push it every 40 or so moves to reset your move count and just keep going lol

That was a very good explanation, but you didn't mention what if he goes to d8 at 6:26, then there is another concept that we have to use our knight and bishop to create a staircase. I learned it from another video I can now mate in at least 33 or 34 moves from any position. Thanks!

Ok, so the triangles and knight zig-zag have been in my memory as parts of how to do this, but the central formation you just showed combined with opposition finally tie everything together for me in a way that makes this consistently possible, after years of not getting it. It feels so rewarding, thank you, I will practice with family and friends, and I know one day in a tournament game I'll be forced to know this. Thank you again, I can also now teach this to my students.

I saw a gm who didn’t know the proper technique, so a 1700 doesn’t necessarily have to know it, it almost never happens

I reckon most 1700s would fail to find a mate against robust defence, unless they've specifically learnt a technique.
I say this as a ~1600 :) I've only had this position as the defending side, and my opponent got me to the edge of the board but hung a fork trying to stop me escaping while trying to avoid threefold repetition.

Checkmating with knight and bishop is the same as trying to catch a slippery fish with your bare hands.
It was for me the first time I tried this after watching video on it. Took a while to encounter after video but I thought I had the gist of it, but I was wrong. King kept slipping away to wrong corner.

I was 12 and I we went to a chess competition at school. Somehow I made it to this ending but we agreed to a draw, cuz I didn't know how to checkmate. Now I know it haha
I've played over 1300 games of chess online and just experienced my first knight bishop endgame. I didn't have a clue on how to checkmate but my opponent admirably resigned and gave me the win :)

Great video Antonio, but although counterintuitive, it's a much better try for black to run from e8 to d8 instead of f8 when the white king, knight, and bishop are on the squares f6, e5, and h7, respectively. It takes a lot of tecnique to stop the king from escaping, but with the moves 1.Ke6 Kc7 2.Nd7 Kc6 3.Bd3 (Critical to keeping the black king confined to the correct corner!) Kc7 4.Be4 (another critical move taking away even more flight squares and forcing him back to c8 or d8) Kd8 5.Kd6 Ke8 6.Bg6+ Kd8 7.Bf7 (another critical waiting move which creates the same king, knight and bishop vice that was used to push him closer to the correct corner) Kc8 8.Nc5 Kd8 9.Nb7+ Kc8 10. Kc6 Kb8 11.Kb6 Kc8 (one last ditch effort to try to escape) 12.Be6+ Kb8 13.Bd7 (once again setting up the king knight and bishop in the same position we used to push the black king from the wrong corner: now he is confined to a8 and b8) Ka8 14.Nc5 Kb8 15.Na6+ Ka8 16.Bc6#.

but it is common tactic, because it is not as "simple"
so given position in timestamp:
W: Kf6 Ne5 Bh7
B: Ke8
if black goes
1... Kd8 (instead of Kf8 as in video)
in hope of escaping, correct way is to cut of him with
2. Be4
with the idea that if black "continues to run"
2. ... Kc7
you reply with
3. Nc4
.. creating "wall" b6 c6 d6
and you push him with king via 7th rank
if black tries to repeat moves
2. .. Ke8
you cut him with bishop again,but not from h7 but from d5

If you suspect that your opponent doesn't know how to checkmate with knight and a bishop it's a good idea to play. But not at the higher ELO obviously.
We really enjoy educational videos like this one and we want to see more of them in the future
4:07 this position is famously known as D. Trump's favorite chess position: "The great wall".
Except that Trump always tries to trap the queen in a corner.
This was the method I was originally worked out (my father said "first you have to force the king to the side, then to the corner; a book said that you can't stop the king from running into the wrong corner first") but every few years I'd forget how to do it. And I'm not as clever as I once was. But everywhere I look, they teach the triangle method, so thank you for those of us who learned it the old fashioned way.

i think the triangle is easier for beginners, you always have the same setup for knight and bishop, just getting a smaller triangle until you hit the corner, and opponent king moves are not so relevant, is just about doing the knight and bishop 1 square away triangle and chasing the king with your king until you make a smaller triangle, this method in the video is a better/more efficient technique, but you have to be aware of the opponent king's moves to not let it escape. But i don't know, some people might find this mate easier
Great video. It’s many years since I read Paul Keres’ Practical Chess Endings and I never could understand his description of mating with B & N. However, after your explanation followed by some practice against Stockfish, I find it really is pretty straightforward!
This is my favourite endgame. It shows how complicated and beautiful can be chess with only 4 pieces on the board. I regularly practice this endgame and I can do it in less than 3 minutes. I won this endgame twice in blitz games. Knowing the best defense can earn sweet half-points when the opponent is unaware of the required techique. Indeed, it is a rare endgame, but it worths every second spent to study it, purely for its artistic value. It also gives confidence to know it. Thank you for the video!
