- Over the past 38 months I've revelled in the opportunity to shoot F1. I've learnt plenty over that time and in this video I share with you my journey as an F1 photographer from nearly getting run over in the pits to finding a niche for my images and stories on social media.

I just shot my first race at Miami this year! Was a pleasure meeting you at the Thursday event and thanks to you I got about 40 great shots per driver

It's quite surprising that no one else thought of this or actually made it work.

Inspirational Kym!! I love my sport photography. I too was one of those in the stand in Adelaide trying to get some shots of the F1. Envious is an understatement! Love your work and im looking forward to following your journey in 2022..

I must send a HUGE thanks to your son for getting you onto TH-cam. I would have not seen your photography or insight on formula one. I've only missed watching, on tv,v a hand full of races since attending Adelaide in 1995 , and I can say you produce an insight that I have not found anywhere else in thoes 25 years. Thanks!

Excellent video as always mate. After you mentioned fellow photographers pointing out objects you want to get out of your shots, and how you were getting help/advice from some in your early days, I was curious as to how well you get to know/get along with other photographers?
Love the content, I got into F1 just prior to the ‘winter break’ of 2019 your videos continued, and escalated my interest in F1 so thank you for the genuinely good stories and information that you share with us
I know all of the permanent photographers but we really don’t get time to socialise. As with everything in F1 we move at such speed that a minute or two is probably a long as she get to chat with most of the guys. Although occasionally I catch up with some of the guys for dinner which is always enjoyable

Love your photo's and these videos of behind the scenes and stories behind the photos. Would you ever try to reach out to Riccardo and get some photo's of him at the farm in the off season or relaxing between races, when he is there?

Amazing story thank you so much! I just got a new camera the other day and for practice went to a local racing club. I ended up just walking to the members area where the track photographers were with just a 50mm lens but got some decent shots. Came home I was hooked and found you! Hope you do more videos on the business side of this!!!

Hello Kym. Just wanted to say that I really enjoy your work. I think that a lot of your success comes from your personality. ( as well as a great eye). You seem very easy to get along with. Many years ago (before Digital) I remember seeing photographers in the Media Center developing their film, and then scanning it wet and sending the photos over the phone line. Can't wait to see your images from what's left of the season.
That would certainly have added another element of difficulty. I’m certainly glad I shoot digital

I started following you on instagram at 19k way before you got verified. Besides the great quality of the photos, what made me follow were the captions and behind the scenes explanations you gave us. There are so many formula 1 pictures out there which are just pictures, but you bring your pictures to life and give us more insight. Thank you so much Kym, you are undoubtedly the number 1 photographer in Formula 1.

I'm a motorsports amateur photographer myself, never had the opportunity to be present in an F1 event, just done some of the WRC events, and dream about becoming a professional motorsports photographer one day, and this video its a great insight how to become one. Hello Kym, great video with lots of insight into the intriguing world of the F1 photographer. You said you were in the right place when approached by Sutton but how did you get the pass to be in the right place? Your photos are great taken from a different angle puts a new prospective on them. Not many races this year.

Very interesting on learning how you got into the business of Photography with Formula 1.
You definitely inspired me to get into Motorsport photography I’ve always been interested in photography and have focused on capturing nature but am in the process of getting the right equipment to start locally at racing events in south east Queensland with the hope to shoot F1 one day.

All I can say is "you're a lucky bastard!"... and I mean that in the nicest possible way. I'm a graphic designer and semi-professional photographer who would absolutely love to do what you do. I definitely don't have the guts to give it a go though (the "bird in the hand" philosophy has a lot to answer for) and I probably don't have the skill. I'll just live my life vicariously through you, by watching your videos (which are great BTW!)

For me as a photojournalist and a big F1 fan. I agree people shot are very cool especially when people are being themselves. I never stage anything when I shoot. I feel we need to see more of the people that work on the racing cars (Unknown people, behind the scene). More pics of the fans with the drivers. Remember without fan support there is no F1. Kym I love your work and the way you approach things. Would like to talk you over video chat. (Whatapp) etc. Your son had good ideas for you. Father and son great combination .
Hey kym! huge fan of your work! grateful for this video because it is my dream to shoot F1 professionally. Even went to singapore recently to cover the race there, unfortunately the view was covered with fences and cages so it was quite difficult to get a good shot also because of my lack of gear haha anyways thanks for inspiring photographers like me!!!

Hi Kym. Excellent video, very informative and interesting. Photography obviously seems quite expensive to get into. Can you give any insight into how much it costs over the course of a year to travel to each race + equipment etc? Shooting F1 is my absolute dream job as an Australian photographer.
buy a camera that you have control over the aperture, focus, iso and shutterspeed and go to races as a fan and try to get unique angels. go to the stuff that no one goes to like club racing or karting (not a professional but tried to give a realistic reply)
This is so inspiring am curious would you say it would be better to apply for FIA accreditation if you live in a country the races take place?
Hey mate im in Perth also and just came across you and your photos etc so well done. I would be interested to know how you funded the start.... most people cannot just decide one day to photograph something like F1 - how did you do that? I did a few Adelaide F1s with the Guinness World Challenge in 87 and 88. I do the swimming here in Perth now.

Another great insight into the photography process Kym. With so many images being uploaded to your various media sites for free, how do you monetise this business? How do you get paid for a photograph?

Hi Kym. Are you saying that you got to shoot testing in Europe and the Melb. GP without any arrangement or on behalf of any media company or third party organisation?
When you first got approved , did you have to pay your own way? Or they include travel expenses? Or was it at your own expenses until you got hired?
