  • I've taken more than a million Formula 1 photos across my time spent on the F1 schedule. Whether it's a shot of Mick Schumacher, Micheal Masi, Max Verstappen or Lewis Hamilton it's safe to say i've got a surplus of everyone. Ahead of F1 2022 though, I've picked some of my favourites and in this video I'll tell you the story behind each one.

    That shot of Daniel at Monaco is definitely a good shot. I saw it being used by the F1 broadcaster in Malaysia as an Instagram ad, and it sure look amazing.

    2:05 This is why I want the German GP back. I love that track, the atmosphere there, the crowds. It's just a whole package, similar to Silverstone (Not as many people but still).

      @@mamavswild I mean F1 have signed billion year deals with tracks for money sponsorships. And many awesome tracks are just left away. Germany, Turkey next year and many more.

    Brilliant stuff. Very informative on how you get your pictures. I was wondering if you've shot the Singapore Grand Prix? It's a race I've always enjoyed watching on TV - a true night race and the cars look fantastic under the lights. Curious to hear the challenges of shooting a race like that.

    Love, love, love these types of videos. It is so great that you're willing to share details on your shots. I would watch a 30 minute video on every single shot to get all the details. I recently shot at the Rolex 24 and would have loved to have seen this video before I went. I would have tried at least a couple of these composition methods and I bet I would have gotten some nice shots. If you only made videos like this, I'd be a very happy photographer.

    I wasnt suprised on how you get the good shot at spa. I learned shoting skateboarding from legend Jim Goodrich (he shots it since the 70s) and even tough he is quite old now, he still is not afraid of getting himself dirty and being down on the ground to get that perfect angle. same what you said about monaco. sitting on hot concrete, being uncomfortable but still willing to do it all for that perfect shot. this shows real passion and dedication and is the reason why i enjoy your photos and videos so much!

    I am super jealous of your job, it is my ultimate dream to be an F1 photographer. I paused the video at the shot of you in Monaco so close to the barrier and was just daydreaming that one day that could me there taking some epic photos.

    Thi is a really good segment. I was trained in the 70s as a professional photographer. I wasn’t studying photography but design. I still use the skills I was taught in my practice as an artist. What I appreciate is showing that photography is more than just shooting. With everyone taking pictures with their phones I hope this might enlighten some as to how much work goes into a photograph

    Ahh a foca or high end press pass . Forget zooms go primes and 2 back caps glued together. . 600 f4 is a must so is a 300 and a 200. Throw in a 85, 35,and a 15. Gitzo monopod Lowe pro bag and pack

    when panning, how do you keep the car centered in the shot? personally when im shooting fighter jets i like to have a tiny dot on my lens and i try to place that dot on the cockpit of the plane.
    maybe you have a more effective way of doing it?

      Most of the photographers don’t even use the caps at the track. I always do.

    Hi Kym, I'm still an amateur photographer but really want to go pro. I take pics of rally and track cars aswell as motorbikes with my 1300d. I have a few pics that I believe that I can sell but have no clue how to even sell them or get access to the inside of tracks. Do you have any tips to go pro?

    Great video! but wait, you F1 guys get barriers ? 😅 For us who shoot Ultra4 and other 4x4 events, there's no barriers and we're told to stay away 50 ft for the slow stuff and 150 ft away from the course for the fast sections.

      @@KymIllman my question to you would be, do you attend any of the night races? And if so, how would that affect the photography? I’m assuming you’d need to find the perfect spot so as to not get ridiculous amounts of glare, but I feel that the result would be worth it.

    Hi Kym, do you shoot RAW only ? Will you get the R3 before the start of this year's season? and one last question; flying a helicopter or standing next to a F1 car passing by at 300km/hour?

      One card roll, one card JPEG for back up. F1 car passing close at 300 km an hour is scarier

    I can tell you a story of a experienced motor racing photographer getting a broken leg from leaning against Armco barrier 20 metres up from a crash. The ripple from the steel Armco was what broke his leg. If he wasn't leaning on the fence he may have just got a bruise from the shock wave.

    great video, however, I got a bit confused, why do you fucus so much on getting a clean shot without any disturbance instead of using photoshop for example to remove those imperfections?

      I shoot 16,000 images a race weekend and keep 1400. There is no time for Photoshop.

    Sweet video. About the Brazil situation: how are the limited places in that spot distributed among the photographers? Is it kind of a gentleman’s agreement, some sort of lottery, or a question of who can provide the largest bribe XD?

      Permanent photographers are split into groups and there is a captain for each group who hands out the pit wall tabard on a rotation basis

    Something I've always been unsure about is how you earn from this. Lots of photographers will attend events like this, and I'd like to do so one day just to enjoy the experience. But do they select top-quality images and pay the photographers that own said images... please tell me about this. Because motorsport is my second favorite hobby to photography.

      Well, I’m not a Motorsport photographer either, but I’m pretty sure it works out like; you own the photo being the photographer, so in some cases, the team or sport will approach you and ask if you have any nice photos of their car, in other cases, you go to the team and show them the photos you’ve taken, if they like them, you come to an agreement on how they use the photo and how much you get paid depending on views or what have you. It seems like hard work, but rewarding in its own way.

    Once again Kym, great video.....if I could make one constructive criticism....the "Stay Passionate" design on your hoody is rather bland and rigid. Being an F1 photographer, surely something with flourish and movement would be more in tune.

    I saw on the news that Australia is opening up to vaccinated people in a few weeks. Two months after your quarantine, I feel sorry for everybody with poor timing to just start quarantine now. Will you start making short trips abroad now?
