Kimberly, great show and tips on preparing before a retreat. I am unable to attend overnight retreats because I am the sole caregiver for my disabled daughter but once a week a respite worker comes for 4 hours to be with her so I am able to go to the quilt shop to sit and sew. I do exactly what you do. I prep and pre-cut all my fabrics and organize projects in separate containers with everything I need to take with me. Keeps me organized and on track since my time is limited and precious I can just get down to sewing. Enjoy your retreat and I can’t wait to see everything that you get accomplished.
I also cut before going on retreat. Too many distractions to figure out what I'm doing . Recently went on one and had blocks already done beforehand (i.e, UFOs) so I was able to assemble 4 big tops)! It was a great sense of accomplishment that would have taken a couple of years to get around to. Such fun. Have a great time. Thanks for your descriptions and organizational tips.
This was an absolutely awesome live stream. I spent a lot of money while watching 😂, but got so many fabulous ideas. Kimberly, you are a great well of info, inspiration and enthusiasm. Thank you so much for everything!🥰
Kimberly, you seem to be overworked. I want you to know you are greatly appreciated. Your work is beautiful and as quilters, we know how much work goes into your beautiful quilts. Enjoy your retreat and God bless.
Good morning all of my left-handed people who are watching this I am a left-handedCrochet quilter and everything crafty beautiful when you are left-handed you do not need a video that shows you how to do it left-handed just understand how to make it a double crochet is still a double crochet a single crochet is still a single crochet and etc. hope this was helpful and of course the Fat Quarter Shop Kimberly and the gang it’s always so good and so sweet to watch you every week thank you for all you do for us
I love Fridays because Kimberley’s video comes out! Her sewing and organizational skills are impeccable. Such a delight to watch. Kimberley please let us see all the finished projects!! Especially the granny square projects. I hope you enjoy the retreat.
I ALWAYS carry a bag with hand work in it. I keep it in the car. If I get caught waiting (kids, appointments) I work on knit, crochet, hexys. I even do quilt planner review if I need to. Your new crochet project would be great for that!
I organize a lot like you do before going to a retreat other than starching. I am not a starcher. I made the Great Granny Square quilt this winter. After watching your video I think I will make the bonus quilt in the book. Thanks for sharing what you take to a retreat!
I’ve been to multiple quilt retreats, usually close enough to drive. After a couple of times a chair became an essential! I ended up buying The Bungee Chair from The Container Store to take to retreats. Works at home, but I have another at home that is heavier and not easy to take along. I highly recommend it. I have rarely had space for a full sized ironing board. Made an ironing surface out of a wooden folding “TV Tray”. It can double as a side table, easy to have close by. Also like the Quilter’s Cut and Press for an ironing surface and my Oliso travel iron. A few year ago I asked for a roll up heavy duty extension cord. It even has extra outlets on it. My family thought it was so funny that I loved that gift so much!I keep an extension cord strip with surge protector with my sewing machine case but sometimes I wish the cord was longer. Now I have options.
Thank you, Kimberly. Hoping your thoroughly enjoy your retreat and allow yourself a bit of time to relax, and make new friends, when you are there. :-D
Great video for getting organized. Kimberly - you know everyone loves that caddy for storing the triangles on a roll. It is the best way to store them and have them handy. Since you are sooo good at having items manufactured, why don't you have this caddy made? You make the Lori Hold metal book holders; I know you could make this too!! I would certainly buy this and stock up on all the triangles on a roll. I was so happy you made the little brush for cross stitch. I hope you will consider the caddy too!
Wow! Kimberly I’m overwhelmed with your trip packing. Five days is a lot. That was my whole sewing room if I went that long. Lol! Hey, I hope you have a great trip and tell us how it went for you and if you got all your goals meant. I’ve never done anything like that so I didn’t have any idea so much would have to follow me. Great tips though. Love all your projects and I can see the need for organization.
Love Love Love the upcoming stitch alongs... I am planning on joining in on all three. : ) Am on a tight budget but hope to be able to gather up what is needed before ea. starts.
One thing I like to take is a wagon. So I can wheel my supplies in. I have a foldable one from Costco. It’s great and then I fold it and put it under the table. Or I get it up and use it as a shelf.
Just wanted to say a special thanks for the April Sew Sampler box co tents. I would love to have a tutorial to watch for the Buzz pattern and for the new QAL monthly project. I know it would have to be available for only Sew Sampler Members but it would be so special. Thanks for all you do and have fun on retreat!
Your video for retreats was so inspiring! I have gone on many and having your projects cut and ready is the way to go! My car looks just like that except the places I go provide a large ironing board - I take along a TV tray converted personal ironing station! You work too much ! I am afraid for your health ! We need you around for many years to come! Meetings should be relaxing for you not stressful! 🥰🧵🥰
Hi Kimberly, love the snail trail pattern, I recently ordered the 12” papers! Check again at the one you labeled mistake, it looks correct, and the other one in that fabric looks like the middle is off. Have fun at the retreat!
I love the idea of using the design boards to lay out all the squares. I think I need a few more design boards. Order when hubby out of town hehehe. I don’t need that many as I just counted mine 🙈. Super excited for the granny square cross stitch and quilt along. I need to find my book. Thanks for all the inspiration.
Oy! Just when I thought I shouldn't add another quilt project, along comes the Great Granny Squares...AND...Snail Trail! Well, I'm in for both. And I used to be a "one-quilt-at-a-time" grl. LOL
Kimberly, when I or my friends make a mistake like yours we call it a design opportunity, can't wait to see what you do with the "mistake" cut fabrics...
Thanks for all the inspiration! Wondering if there is a way to know how much to cut for the great granny squared quilt if you only want to make the main quilt and not the rest of the projects? Thanks for all you and your team do! ❤️
Will a non-colored image of the Great Granny Squared quilt be available? I like Lori’s gray fabrics and would like to include them in my quilt, so I would like to create my own cheat sheet for color and fabric placement.
A suggestion for crochet lefties.. The Crochet Crowd on TH-cam. Mikey is awesome and almost every video includes one for left handlers. Hope you get time to enjoy the retreat, Wonder Woman! Loved the bobbins!
I pack as little as I can get away with for retreats. If the retreat location has an iron, I don’t pack mine - it’s a waste of space! I do a lot of pre work too. Most everything gets cut out so I can just sit down and sew once my spot is set up.
If looking for a quilting retreat you could check out Together We Sew Quilting Retreats. Thanks for all the info on for the packing. Have never been on a retreat but would love to be able, one day, to go. Thanks for sharing all your tips as well as your blocks. See, your community helps you find those little mishaps too. Have a great retreat and will be looking forward to see all that you complete.
Any ideas on how to loosen the screws on the throat plate of the Juki. They are screwed in so tight that even my husband can't make them budge. I'm sure it needs cleaning in there.
I'm laughing thinking it would take me an entire weekend just to get the same packed things together for the retreat weekend! Never mind the preparation of the projects! Good for you Kimberly!
Hi Kimberly, can you lay what time of day you sew during week and how you fit it in. For example do you in blocks of time or 15 min here and there? Or do you wait to sew at night? Are some days filled with more sewing time? More curious about time and what hours of day you get to sew.
Thank you Fat Quarter shop for fantastic custoer service!! I got my coral and Cayenne fabric in just a couple of days and the lady that helped my on the phone was beyond patieint!! I have a question. Now that I am able to assemble blocks, do I press the seams to the side or open? It think I remember in some video the seams being pressed open, but in this video, Kimberly's seems look to be pressed to the side. It sure is easier to press to the side. Is it just me, or is it really fiddly to press seams open. Maybe I need a smaller iron.
So if I understand Kimberly right by just cutting the fabrics according to the pattern and after the granny squares are set up you will have all that left over or is she cutting up each fat quarter all up? I am confused as to how you get all that left overs just by cutting as pattern says.
Kimberly you are amazing! Are you ever going to sleep at the retreat. I wish you all of the best. Thank you for all the amazing information. You people are sooooo lucky to have everything near your doorstep. I want to do the chicken quilt ad I had to buy material close to Lori's to do the quilts. I still don't know how I'm going to get the sew simple shapes here. My neighbours are leaving on Monday to America, only for a week and then go to Italy, so they won't be able to get the chicken sew simple shapes because your stock will only be available in June. Thank you for a fantastic video, I really enjoyed it! I wish you could be my neighbour!!
Do not leave anything in your car of any value........ Even during the day this is not advised. Someone will break in and steal what you have. Check with retreat organizers they may be setting up ironing stations. I usually take mine and a tv tray iron board that I DIY'd, but 2 irons would be alot. Almost all of the retreats that I have attended have tables with ott lights, mug holders that attach to the table so as to avoid a spill. Every station has a nice clean garbage can with bags and they ask you to empty it nightly. Most of the centers (Motels) or homes that I stay at have lots of extra tools.....Cricuts for those who cross stitch, nice cutting stations for quilters, design walls for use and almost all of them have lots of room for your stuff and lock things up at night. When we first started going (15) or so years ago they asked what we would like to see and most places listened and made us happy. We loved going back and it was so relaxing. Hint we mostly stop for a brunch and supper. Having 3 meals a day was to much and then snacks of course a girl has to have her chocolate. I have never flown to a retreat here in Minnesota we have many in the immediate area within a hour or two. If you do fly I would pack just a carry on with something to do. We also have secret sisters and come bearing gifts. We play games and they usually involve a fat quarter to play. These are some of the notices we receive when we sign up and pay a deposit. Have fun it usually is a great time, gives us time to catch up with each other. I am sure if you Google retreat centers you will be able to find them in your area. We have a childrens camp here with... A frame cabins that hosts quilting groups in the winter time. They have a Chef from a really nice restaurant in town come and cook for us. This is included in the price and it is so reasonable. Enjoy.....
This live exhausted me and now I need to take a nap!!!!! Good Heavens!!! From me and I am sure all the lovely people here, Will deserves a good bit of EXTRA for doing those Granny Blocks!! Now, in the backseat of your car, do your seats fold down as two and one?? Leave the one up. Take your chair, turn it upside down and place the seat of your chair on the backseat. I would seriously call your friend and ask what the chairs are like at this place.
Kimberly, this is confusing. You said in the video that you should get 3.5 to 5 yards of 12037 Cayenne for J,K,L,M. Then you said you should have 6384 Coral for H and I. It appears in the book pattern that all of those should be cut from the same fabric. Also, when I ordered my fabric from FQS for the entire project with the book, they onnly sent me 1/2 yard of this Cayenne. I was ordering for the whole quilt so not sure why they did that. Then they also sent 1/2 yard of a brownish fabric with a little plus sign on it and I have no idea what that is for. I got the half yard of 1203 frosting for the binding. Then of course I got the bundle that I will use to make the squares. I hope you will advise on this.

You may have these on your list but just in case …. Power cord, foot pedal, extension cord, glasses, a cup for water or coffee. (You wouldn’t believe how may times people forget their power cord. If you have room an extra sewing machine in case yours doesn’t work and the manual to your machine.
I may have missed it but are the details going to be on the website or the blog for the great granny squared quilt along and the crochet ? Kimberly you are amazing
Hello Elizabeth! The quilt along info will be available on our blog on May 27th. The crochet along will start on June 3rd and we have tutorials here: bit.ly/39XiRtk
Would it be possible to provide a list of the skq's that Kimberly used for each of the blocks. It is nearly impossible to tell which fabrics were used on the PDF picture that was linked on the blog. If I enlarge it, they become a blur. Thank you!
I have the same Juki as you, how to you protect it while traveling with it? I know enough to have the needle down, but is there a protective case for it?
Hello Marion! The storage boxes are available here: ▸14.5qt. Latchmate+ Mint Storage Box with Tray by Simply Tidy™ bit.ly/3yI63kC ▸14.5qt. Latchmate+ Sorbet Storage Box with Tray by Simply Tidy™: bit.ly/3L8ht3P

@@FatQuarterShopTX thanks for the reply! I was trying to figure it out on my own but needing to count on my fingers was a big hindrance! And it looks like I'll need to buy more fabric (: lol!
Just now watched this repeat video -- WHERE do I find info for the Great Granny Squared Quilt Along????? I didn't see it listed under quilt alongs on your blog.
Hello Kimberly I am doing the Garry Square Quilt, I have the book but I can't seem to find the answer to a question I have. The background fabric for the pillows can you tell me what they are? It is so hard to match fabric online. Please help
So many great thing!! I already own the granny book. Now on to the fabric!! I am wondering what is the pattern for the quilt behind you? I still consider myself a newbie and that quilt looks like I may be able to swing it! 😉❤️
Hello m0ther0ne! Kimberly has only talked about it in one livestream: th-cam.com/video/ZtCeZvs7cog/w-d-xo.html Here is more info on our blog: blog.fatquartershop.com/great-granny-squared-along/

Kimberly you are blessed to have someone to help you lay things out!!!
Hey Kimberly Jolly the browns and darks would make cute roof's for your house's that you are making with the fabrics you used this year in quilts.

Can't wait for this trifeca of goodness. Going to participate in all that is the great granny along!! Like many my Grandma taught me to crochet.
I love the granny square pattern....working on one....2 years now, hope to finish it this year.
I've always wanted to learn how to make Granny Squares so that looks super fun!! And I love ALL the sewing and quilt projects!

Wow, your Will seems to be an awesome assistant! You’re so fortunate to have him to help get things together!!
I like the white in the crochet; it gives a bit of brightness.
Thank You, Kimberly!! Have a Great Time at your retreat!!!
Thank you, Kimberly. Hoping your thoroughly enjoy your retreat and allow yourself a bit of time to relax, and make new friends, when you are there. :-D
Kimberly and staff…thanks for the organizing information…so very helpful❤️
Great video for getting organized.
Kimberly - you know everyone loves that caddy for storing the triangles on a roll. It is the best way to store them and have them handy. Hello Linda! Thank you for your suggestion.
My anxiety has kicked in just watching all of your projects! But what a “treat” to go to a “retreat” and sew non-stop! Hope you have sew much fun!
For left handed crochet; I had my daughter-in-law sit in front of me so she was seeing more of a mirrored instruction. She picked it right up.
My Great Grandma taught me this way to embroider, so I sew upsidedown and back to front.
The bobbin fall out made me lol. Thanks for the laugh
I bought one of Lori’s rulers and it is great! I’m planning on getting the whole set.
You are amazing! Great video.🍒🍒🍒
Love Love Love the upcoming stitch alongs... I am planning on joining in on all three. : ) Am on a tight budget but hope to be able to gather up what is needed before ea. starts.
The traditional Granny Square is black on the outside. I love your choice to pieces! It makes it" modern retro."
Packing for a retreat translates well to packing for the weekend getaway! Thanks
Thanks for the chuckle! Those bobbins spilling was so normal, not for you but me lol
Love that prep for the spotted snail! I am going to try and join that ! It looks like a lot of fun
#10 & 20 are my favorites 💕
10 and 20 are my favorites too.
Oy! Just when I thought I shouldn't add another quilt project, along comes the Great Granny Squares...AND...Snail Trail! Well, I'm in for both. And I used to be a "one-quilt-at-a-time" grl. LOL
Your shop and TH-cam channel is awesome.
I loved this, you shared so much good information! Thank you for all you do for all of us!
I love watching Kimberly
Will a non-colored image of the Great Granny Squared quilt be available? I like Lori’s gray fabrics and would like to include them in my quilt, so I would like to create my own cheat sheet for color and fabric placement.
I have a kit for this but haven’t made it. I might have to sew along!
A suggestion for crochet lefties.. The Crochet Crowd on TH-cam. Mikey is awesome and almost every video includes one for left handlers. Hope you get time to enjoy the retreat, Wonder Woman! Loved the bobbins!
I love the granny block. 💕
Block 16 my favorite
Well you have finally worn me out. Whew!!! Have fun. It will be nice that you are quilting for yourself.
Great video!! I would love to see what does get accomplished at retreat.
I pack as little as I can get away with for retreats. If the retreat location has an iron, I don’t pack mine - it’s a waste of space! I do a lot of pre work too. Most everything gets cut out so I can just sit down and sew once my spot is set up.
You have a WONDERFUL child!!!!
What original fabric line did Lori Holt use for her Great Granny Squared Book? Love the new plaids line.
Hello Karen! You might have to take it to a shop where it can be service so they can take the plate off, because you may strip the screws .
I'm laughing thinking it would take me an entire weekend just to get the same packed things together for the retreat weekend! Never mind the preparation of the projects! Good for you Kimberly!
You don’t get much time to sew and I’m happy for you. I would love a week without my hubby, in Hawaii.
Hi Kimberly, can you lay what time of day you sew during week and how you fit it in. For example do you in blocks of time or 15 min here and there? Or do you wait to sew at night? Are some days filled with more sewing time? More curious about time and what hours of day you get to sew.
Hello Sheri! I cross stitch daily at least 2 hrs day (fit it in when I can). I quilt on weekends - wake up early - stay up late
we take wine on our retreats
Where did you get you plastic fabric holder with handle. Love this thanks Kathy Hertenstein
Hello Katharine! Kimberly bought the plastic container with a handle here: bit.ly/3L8ht3P
Thank you Fat Quarter shop for fantastic custoer service!! I got my coral and Cayenne fabric in just a couple of days and the lady that helped my on the phone was beyond patieint!! I have a question. I want to crochet a granny square blanket to go with a quilt made with low volume prints. What colors of Lori Holt’s yarn do you recommend?
Hello Rhonda! We recommend picking the the taupes, whites and browns.
Love your blouse, Kimberly 😍
Kimberly, Payton gets you! Love the kid!
when I do the snail trail papers
I mark the paper on all the dark spots/ less chance of a mistake
If I order 3 1/2-5yds of the “Cayenne” for the Sashing & Borders, how much of the 6384 “Coral” should I order for the background???
Hello Christine! We recommend ordering 3 ¾ yards.
For the Bliss QAL do you have to be a member of the sew sampler subscription?
Hello MsClerk007! The patterns that Kimberly mentioned are available here: www.fatquartershop.com/nsearch/?q=bliss+kit
Love the granny square sew along can't wait to start it. What is the quilt that is behind KImberly? It is beautiful!!
Hello Candace! The quilt behind Kimberly is from the Stitch Jolly Bar - bit.ly/3NyZghJ
Thanks for all the great information! Where do I find the Retreat Check List? I would like to print it out. Thanks so very much!
Hello Cindy The checklist is available in the description box. Here is a link to the checklist: bit.ly/3wqFePe
There are no mistakes - only design challenges!!!!
What Juki sewing machine do you take to retreats?
Are you able to sew around a lot of other people in one room? Sometimes it’s hard to concentrate but I love retreats.
Kimberly you are amazing! Are you ever going to sleep at the retreat. I wish you all of the best. Thank you for all the amazing information.
Hello Marsha! Please contact our customer service team. Here is Kimberly's updated fabrics:
33 Fat Quarters - Kimberly is using Bee Plaids FQB and not using Pewter or background prints
From FQ - Cut A to G (if using normal binding do not cut Fabric G)
3 ¾ yards Background C6384-Coral
Cut Fabric H, I & K
2 yards to 3 ¼ yards (more if cutting LOF) Sashing and Border C12037-Cayenne
Cut Fabric J, L, M
Binding C12032-Frosting
Backing 5 1/3 yards of 44” wide or 2 ¼ yards of 108” wide
You may have these on your list but just in case …. Power cord, foot pedal, extension cord, glasses, a cup for water or coffee. (You wouldn’t believe how may times people forget their power cord. If you have room an extra sewing machine in case yours doesn’t work and the manual to your machine.
I may have missed it but are the details going to be on the website or the blog for the great granny squared quilt along and the crochet ? Kimberly you are amazing
Hello Elizabeth! The quilt along info will be available on our blog on May 27th. The crochet along will start on June 3rd and we have tutorials here: bit.ly/39XiRtk
will it be a waste to use a jelly roll instead of fat quarters?
Hello Pam! Which sew along are you asking about?
Would it be possible to provide a list of the skq's that Kimberly used for each of the blocks. It is nearly impossible to tell which fabrics were used on the PDF picture that was linked on the blog. If I enlarge it, they become a blur. Thank you!
Hello Beryl! We do not have plans to link each sku indvidually. If you have access to a color printer that may be your best bet.
@@FatQuarterShopTX thank you for your response. I've printed and even enlarged the PDF and the different blocks are just blurry.
Just make more of your future granny squares include white! I think the white makes it pop.
I have the same Juki as you, how to you protect it while traveling with it? I know enough to have the needle down, but is there a protective case for it?
Hello Stephanie! Kimberly has a generic cover but not one that is specifically made for Juki's.

Just now watched this repeat video -- WHERE do I find info for the Great Granny Squared Quilt Along????? I didn't see it listed under quilt alongs on your blog.
Hello RooBee! We will more information on our blog on May 27th.
Will you get any more of the Quilt Fair half yard bundles?
Hello MsClerk007! We will not be able to restock the Quilt Fair HYB.
Mikey from the crochet crowd has great left handed videos.
Love the idea of a crochet blanket to go with the quilt! Is Lori’s yarn really a chunky weight? It looks like worsted or sport weight.
Hello Juanita! No, Lori Holt's chunky thread is a dk weight and we recommend using a 3.5mm crochet hook.
You can still use what you cut. They will look like they are floating.
Hello Kimberly I am doing the Garry Square Quilt, I have the book but I can't seem to find the answer to a question I have. The background fabric for the pillows can you tell me what they are? It is so hard to match fabric online. Please help
Hello Michele! Here is a link to the background fabric that Kimberly used: www.fatquartershop.com/bee-backgrounds-coral-circles-yardage
So many great thing!! I already own the granny book. Now on to the fabric!!

@@FatQuarterShopTX thank you so much!!
Is there a kit for the Granny Square Quilt?
Hello Elizabeth! There is not a kit, but we recommend the Bee Plaids Fat Quarter Bundle: bit.ly/3yA4BRr
So the picture on the snail trail paper is mirror image of the actual block? I am sewing them now and my blocks are mirror the picture. Any answers?
