Steam Distillation of Cloves

  • Steam distillation is a great method for isolating natural oils from many plant-based sources. In this video, I demonstrate how to perform a steam distillation of clove powder to isolate eugenol-the compound that gives rise to the unique odor and taste of cloves.
    NOTE: NMR confirms that the oil obtained from steam distillation is quite pure eugenol, with some small peaks that appear to correspond to beta-caryophyllene.

    Doctor Derik Frantz, it is good to see such chemical wizardry. I was researching the essential oil content of the plant Syzygium aromaticum and this partially approximates to 3% in the plant in the so-called brute state. Excellent didactic video illustration.

    great video indeed but i'm wondering about a few things. could you elaborate more on how you decide the quantity of magnesium sulfate, sodium bromide etc... that ur adding along the process. i'm sure they come from some calculation. would be great to have some detail about that. also the last phase involves a rotary evaporator which is unfortunately an expensive piece of equipement (a few k$). is there any alternative to using that, even if it takes much longer? (i guess leaving it a large amount of time in open air would make the job but not sure really...). sorry for the somehow naive question but i'm pretty much new to that. cheers

    Great video. One question I have is why do you salt the distillate with sodium bromide? Is eugenol reactive with the standard salts used to increase the density of the aqueous phase?

    Thank you Derik Frantz. it's really a very nice video but i think so the filter paper used for the removal of magnesium sulphate also absorb oil that affects its yield. Do you have any alternative for this?

    • @derikfrantz3141
      @derikfrantz3141  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello! The filter paper should not absorb much of the oil product as long as it is rinsed several times with solvent. The low yield is caused by the stoichiometry at the beginning of the reaction

    Thanks for the videos, they're all amazing.
    Could you please answer me: what will the destilate contain, if we separate methanol and ethyl acetate by destilation under atmospheric pressure?
    Will we get separate destilates of methanol and ethyl acetate, or maybe a mixture of methanol and ethyl acetate?
    Thank you once again for the answer

    • @derikfrantz3141
      @derikfrantz3141  ปีที่แล้ว

      You should be able to separate them, at least reasonably well, by heating at atmospheric pressure using a Vigreaux column. Check out my Simple and Fractional Distillation video if you want more information.

    QUESTION...........In pretty much all books they always use an extra RBF to boil the water and use a glass tube to bubble the steam into the next 2nd RBF containing the plant material or whatever. BUT in real life i only see people doing it the way you are. Just adding the water to the clove and distill it out. Is there any real advantage to doing it the more complicated way by bubbling in the steam from a 2nd RBF???????????????????? And if you did it the more complicated way would you need to heat the 2nd RBF that had the clove in it or would the steam bubbling over be all the heat that is needed?????????????? If you do it the more complicated way do you start with the RBF with the clove with no water and water will just condense from the steam being brought in by the other flask?????????? Or do you add a little water to the clove RBF and the steam bubbling in will heat it?????????????

  • @jackofnone599

    what type of efficiency is to be expected from the clove eugenol extraction? I imagine that it's not the most efficient because it only approaches the combined steam pressure of the two.

      also thank you for this breakdown of the other materials that this process is applicable to, its very helpful

    • @derikfrantz3141
      @derikfrantz3141  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think this technique does a good job of removing nearly all of the eugenol from the cloves. But I am not sure what the actual yield of eugenol is (compared to all of the original eugenol in the cloves). Another method using a Soxhlet extractor (with an organic solvent) could work well, but it could extract a variety of other organic compounds in addition to eugenol.
