Apologies if some of the audio sounds off *again* in this video. Right after my trip I caught the plague at a bowling alley and it knocked me out for dang near two weeks. HOWEVER, we're back in the saddle now. I'm really excited for what we're doing over the next month and a half and I hope you enjoy watching it!
Also, what's your favorite PSP Game? Legit mine is probably one of the many many extremely solid remakes. BUT, I will play Jeanne d'Arc ANYDAY.

The PSP, for as old as it is, was WAY ahead of it's time. An amazing handheld. Even now, seems better than my modern Switch. Heck, you could use it as an mp3 player and even watch movies on it... back then! Sony has the tech and the money. They should make a PSP 2 to compete with the Steam Deck.

Invizimals, Kenka Bancho, Half Minute Hero and, of course, Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! What Did I Do to Deserve This?, which still wins for the best game title ever.

Work Time Fun is more of a WarioWare style game, and I love it! I spent countless hours playing the game, trying to unlock all of the minigames via the Gachapon machines.
Honestly, with Sony putting PS1 and PSP games on PS4 and PS5, I hope it comes to the consoles eventually, so I can do it all again!
Also, the Ramen Timer in that game is meme worthy as all holy hell.
Plus, the cover art looks like the character Dr Tran from MondoMedia, which is what initially brought the game to my attention, since I loved those shorts when I was a teen.

One of my fav PSP games I hardly hear anybody talk about is Fate/Extra. (Its characters certainly haven't been forgotten, Nero is EVERYWHERE in Japan thanks to F/GO) It's an excellent visual novel with a neat little rock paper scissors dungeon crawler tacked on. It has one of the most consistently BANGIN soundtracks I've ever heard with that sweet electronic jazz. It's got a remake that's been in development forever, hopefully that'll be a great way for people to finally check it out.

    • @boobah5643
      @boobah5643 ปีที่แล้ว +2

_Fate/Extra_ has a couplethree sequels. One was an RPG set between, IIRC, the prologue and main game proper, and then a series of Dynasty Warrior clones (that were so delayed that they were supposed to introduce a character who had shown up in _F/GO_ years earlier.)
I'd also argue that introducing Elizabeth Bathory was arguably more impactful; Nero is just another Saber clone (and a bait-and-switch for the low information consumer.)

    • @third-ratedude4234
      @third-ratedude4234 ปีที่แล้ว

I tried Fate/Extra back in like, 2014 cause I got into the Fate/ rabbit hole, but the battle system really takes me out of the experience tbh.
Everything else range from fine to good, but the battle system is just not good enough to be the main thing you do for the majority of the game

It’s so awesome hearing someone talk about how amazing, and a bit strange, the PSP is. It’s my second favourite console of all time (only behind the Vita which is just the PSP deluxe and running a psp emu on it makes it a two in one) and people really don’t talk about how awesome it was and honestly still is.
The reference to Pangya truly made my day. It’s one of my favourite games of all time, having played it when I was as young as three.
Seeing Fat Princess here too was just amazing, I adore Fistful of Cake so much and I always go back to it when I just want to have some quick fun.

  • @KevinCow

Motorstorm: Arctic Edge was pretty rad. It was a full proper Motorstorm game on a handheld, and the snow theme made it feel like a distinct entry and not just a watered down handheld spinoff. Despite being on the weakest hardware, I think it's the second best in the series, behind Pacific Rift.
Also Resistance Retribution is worth mentioning alongside Killzone Liberation. I remember it being one of the more successful attempts at doing a traditional shooter on the PSP.

Two of my big favorites on PSP are Jeanne D'Arc and Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee. (I didn't play Pangya on PSP but on PC when it was known as Albatross 18). Jeanne D'Arc is made by Level-5, who made Dark Cloud and Dragon Quest VIII. It's a fun strategy RPG that is quick to pick up for newbies of the genre as it doesn't go very deep into detail but it's still great fun.

I wasn't super into the PSP, but I *did* have a chance to try a hidden gem by the name of Crush. It's a puzzle-platformer that's like a combination of Super Paper Mario's 2D/3D flipping mechanic and Fez's perspective rotation, and yet it actually predated both of those games. It's also got this really striking "dark/twisted comic book" visual style, and the music uses all kinds of wild distortion effects, which really suits the idea of going into the main character's mind to find the root of his issues and quite literally collect his lost marbles.
It definitely flew under the radar, and I don't think the developers at Zoe Mode worked on many other titles besides it.

I personally own about 200 psp games, that console was my jam. It came out right as I was going in to high-school, I was finally working and had money, all my gamer friends had one, the psp goes hand in hand for me with my high-school experience. I bought basically every game I could get my hands on for about 5 years straight, I own 90% of all the games you mentioned. I bought dead head fred first week cuz it had Dr. Cox in it, I'll never forget Snake shooting a laser out of the top of his head in Acid 2 when you use the Metal Gear card, Rengoku II was played every day at lunch by my friend group, ad hoc was something special. The amount of hours and psps I've gone through is insane, think I own about 7 or so maybe 3 still working. I always find it strange so many channels barely acknowledge the psp or just have little to say about it so I was very stoked to see this was your new vid, unapologetic psp gamer for life!

Unbeatable game library that I believe in retrospect is truly more well rounded than ANY other console. But I loooved playing the ports the PSP have. THUG 2, Guilty Gear, Metal Slug Anthology, Smackdown vs Raw 06, Twisted Metal Head On.

The DJ Max series for the PSP was one of my go2 for rhythm game alongside Patapon and Loco Roco.
The Gundam Vs Gundam series was also another great arcade game. It had so many gundams from different eras battling out. Massive boss fights and even co-op so you can play with a friend.
If I wanted to scratch my racing itch it would be Rockstar's Midnight Club LA Remix, with that free roam world and street races alongside the decent soundtrack.
But of course Monster Hunter series was the game I spent the most on. Just hearing *Pokke village* soundtrack and *Proof of a hero* hits me with so much nostalgia.

Mega Man Powered Up is one of those remakes with an insane amount of content that just is like how did this not sell like hotcakes? Literally added two new robot masters to the original game, gave you all the robot masters as playable characters, plus roll, and proto man. voice acting etc... it's too bad that they didn't bring some of those things forward into the future games.

Gladiator: The Beginning, is a great PSP game that I played a lot that is a completely hidden gem. It's an arena brawler with multiple ending, that allows you to use anything in the arena as a weapon, including the armor you dismantle from your enemies mid combat. You can then upgrade these "weapons" to actually be really deadly lol. It's a great game.

Honestly, what drew me to Dead Head Fred in the first place was him being voiced by John McGinley. The game also acknowledged that he's best known as Dr Cox, since he makes a reference to it in the credits scene.

Awesome video Austin. Appreciate you bringing up Metal Gear Acid 1 & 2 those games are peak childhood nostalgia for me.
If you're looking for more forgotten and weird games, then you should definitely look up Bounty Hounds. It was a cool third person action RPG made by Namco involving customizing your character's weapons & armor parts like Armored Core. Hopefully I'm not the only one who remembers that game lol.

Aw man, you showed it on the intro but didnt mentioned! One of my favorite PSP experiences was (and still is thanks to emulation) the Badman games. Such a weird, simple concept, with a memorable "primary school band" soundtrack and some funny dialog between characters. I loooove that trilogy, and even dedicated a fair amount of time to the Vita spin off.

i remember very well when I bought Metal Gear Acid... I saw the box in the game store and I remember being super excited by thinking of playing a sequel to this massive franchise... when home I put the mini Cd in the PSP and when starts I begin to realize is a card strategy game... (before that there was nothing that I could hate more). I was destroyed so I left it hoklding for a while until I didn't have anything to play... When really getting into to it I've completely change my mind...That game made me addicted.. somehow they manage to make a great card game with MG... at the end is Kojima game... in the few past days after years ... I'm playing MG acid 2 for the first time.. I didn't know about... I'm back excited like a kid !!!!!

Bought many puzzle games and platformers on it.

Mega Man Powered Up was another good game.
The PSP is underrated handheld and was a lot of fun.

You forgot about the "No Heroes Allowed!" series. Also known as "Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! What did I do to Deserve This!?" series. Its like if you mixed Dungeon Keeper with an ant farm / simant type game with RPG elements and so much more. It's the most unique series of games I've ever played personally and they're massively underrated. I only have a PSP to keep it loaded with all 3 of the games and Patapon. You can play the 3rd game (my favorite personally) on ps4 right now and theres a VR game for PSVR, but other than that, they're almost completely forgotten.

Daxter is the best game to pick up with PSP for a first experience. It’s great platforming with all the charm of Daxter and his dad joke sense of humor. It’s solid and I was blown away to be playing it on a handheld back then. I’d love to play through it again. Maybe someday it will get a port or remaster.

First I'd like to do a big shoutout to the legend that is Dark_Alex. Loved that thing. Bought a japanese PSP-1000 with 1.5 firmware off of ebay back then. With few "modifications" it could be turned into your personal entertainment center. Used to carry it around everywhere to listen to music, watch movies, emulate stuff and play all those great games of course. Had to retire it couple of years ago, after the analog sticks broke and the battery pack literally cracked...wasn't worth it anymore to replace stuff unfortunately.

Also a game that I definitely think deserved a moment in the spotlight was Monster Kingdom: Jewel Summoner. It was a new title from one of the early creators of SMT and started what I like to call the Megami Tensei Adjacent series of games with titles like The Caligula Effect, Monark, and Guns Undarkness.

The PSP had some truly weird stuff on it. I used to take major advantage of the GameStop policy to buy a used game and then, no questions asked, exchange it within a certain time period (a week I think) for another used title. I dropped in to check the local stock almost daily for something new to play. The weirdest title I wish I had kept was the Warhammer licensed card game Battle for Atluma. Check out the pre-rendered intro sometime for some choice CGI that screams "this is a thing we paid for." The game was an adaptation of the WarCry CCG and if there is one thing I love it is a digital CCG that lets you play to progress without micro-transactions. As much as I liked that game however, I did eventually trade it in. There is one game though that I still have lurking around in my collection even though I haven't owned a PSP for over a decade at this point. That honor belongs to Dungeons and Dragons Tactics. I had to hold on to that thing because I immediately recognized it as a game time would forget. Man, watching this video is really making me miss my PSP. Thanks for revisiting this amazing handheld!
