One thing worth mentioning is that, when you completed the game 100% and connected your PSP to your PS2, you could get an exclusive car in Jak X, which is pretty neat.

You didn't need to complete the game 100%, I think I unlocked the Daxtermobile without even having a Daxter save on my PSP. Now I do believe the further along in the game you are the more of the Daxter cast you unlock as playable racers in Jak X tho. But again to unlock everyone you did not need 100%, just had to have gotten to the end of the story. You don't need all 1000 Orbs, or whatever the amount is, that saying 100% implies you need.

This game was the first experience I ever had with Jak and Daxter. When I bought a PSP I really wanted the Star Wars one that came with the Battlefront game but they were all sold out everywhere and being too impatient to wait, I got the one that came with Daxter instead. Its wild to think that games looked so good back then and still look good now especially when it's on a handheld. It's just crazy that we basically leap to having extremely good graphical games on stuff like the ds and psp and now it's to the point where we have handheld like the switch that is both a home console and a portable console.

I'm assuming you don't own a PS4? You can just buy it there if you do, although they are the worst versions of the games (edit: except for the Vita versions) they are the most convenient at the moment. The best in my opinion is the port to PS3 (Jak HD Collection), because it's in wide-screen and HD, and I personally have not seen any significant differences between them and the PS2 originals.

That's definitely a top reason Vita failed. It's supposed to be cool to get to play the PS2 greats on the go like Jak, Ratchet, God of War and Sly. Yet Ratchet had problems with the music and for some reason they couldn't be bothered to add an option to use the L2 and R2 buttons for L and R-its very uncomfortable to use the back TouchPad for strafing and locking on. And the problems like you said with Jak. It makes no sense.

PS4 versions are serviceable after the patches they got years ago. Stop repeating outdated statements that no longer hold weight. And for some reason people rarely bring up the notable fact that the games run even better on PS5. The only real bad versions of the games are the semi-unplayable Vita versions, which got not a single patch.
PS3 version is a bit overrated considering it doesn't offer true full screen, is the only version with the infamous punch glitch, many different graphical bugs, butched audio in several areas, and some other stuff. I appreciate how clean it looks and runs, but I'd have to suggest PS5 BC for how far more faithful it is to the original.

Daxter was my first exposure to the Jak series of games. And boy, did it make it me a fan. Something about it made it one of my favourite games on the PSP. Perhaps something to do with the unique bug extermination premise and the unique abilities Daxter had access to.
Looking back on it with more understanding of the Jak series, having recently completed the trilogy of the original games, I love how the game uses this opportunity to use Daxter’s size to see the inner workings of Haven City, and a side to the Metal Head infestation we never truely got to see, with entire hives in the city, as well as the manipulation with Kaden to shut down all the exterminators.
I’m also a big fan of the gameplay, the combat feeling like a diet version of Jak 2 in a way, as well as the unique movement options and level gimmicks adding to the game. While not a huge fan of the QTE mini-games, I can understand wanting to give a small break to the main loop, as well as giving some players a fun optional challenge in the Dreams (just wish so many QTEs weren’t mandatory for progression).
There’s also rewarding exploration, with the Precursor Orbs, Metal Head Gems, various hidden items and the Bug Fight trophies (I don’t remember its actual name, but it was kind of a nice idea). Goes to show that even a watered down extension to the series can still retain the important aspects of the gameplay and charm of the originals.

This video is pretty much my thoughts on the game. Definitely high quality and polished, offering a fun experience, but ultimately nothing super memorable, with little reason to seek it out unless you really want to play a good platformer, or want to see more from Jak's world. When looking at the overall Jak series, there's very little this game does that makes it stand out in comparison to the 4 PS2 entries, so there's very little draw for me to replay it. The gameplay is consistently entertaining, if a little shallow, but nothing groundbreaking or deeply interesting, and there's a couple small tidbits of story and lore to chew on, but it felt overall pointless, with some weirdly sloppy writing. The fact that the game doesn't *actually* take place in the 2 years between arriving in Haven and breaking out of prison was a really stupid decision. I feel like the potential to have a slightly in depth look at Daxter, and his friendship with Jak could have been explored. How did Daxter survive 2 years alone? Did he initially try saving Jak, or was he just fighting to survive on his own? Did he ever give up on trying to save him? Might be a little out of scope for a handheld side game about the loud mouth side kick, but they could have at least alluded to it a little. Instead, the majority of the story is spent doing chores with characters that leave little impression. It all feels just a little pointless and forgettable. Daxter at least still feels like himself, which is nice. The game is just kinda, fine. However as a PSP platformer, it's definitely one of the best on the system, certainly the best portable Jak game. Great video as always mate, really looking forward to the TLF video

Honestly I really enjoy this, it was my main reason for wanting a PSP back in the day. Replayed it recently on Vita, and I hope it gets a PC port like the PS2 games, although I doubt it since I'm guessing it's not written in GOAL so it'd be a LOT of work. Might see how PSP emulation is. I just wanna be able to play with a proper controller and above 240p...
What I remember most about this game is the sheer number of glitches I found all on my own. Fun ones though. Several vents you can walk through instead of crawling just by swinging your swatter to lower your hitbox a tad. The Critter Ridder building can be clipped into when it's blown up by flying over to the new hole and falling in. And at one point you can skip an entire construction site mission by just...going to the end of the level. If you use the bike and flamethrower together to fly over to the exit door instead of the entrance the door will open and the game will progress.

But I could hazard that maybe Jak and Daxter were wild cards in his plan and he didn't originally think of involving himself directly with the pair until Daxter did his ruckus, killed his underling and freed Jak. What better way to handle a pair of wild cards than ingratiating yourself to them firsthand?

One of my dad's friends is the same way. He was my dad's best friend all his life that he was like a brother to him, so naturally when my dad had my sister and I, he became our uncle.
The uncle is an adventurer and i'm sure he took Jak on several which is why he likes it and Daxter was always afraid, cause he probably barely if ever participated. Jak and Daxter going to Misty Island was Jak's idea and Daxter wanted no part as we see in the intro cutscene.

If there’s one thing to say about this retrospective is how much Sony have let Jak and Daxter lay in dormant for so many years after one failure after ND moved on. This series still has lot of potential to reintroduce a sub genera of sci-fi mythical steampunk kind of vibe and wisecracking characters. If they come back one day and done well, can easily be a return of an icon worthy of baring the PlayStation banner.

This is weirdly the only J and D game that I’ve played, parents bought a psp for me with this, sonic rivals 2 and god of war chains of Olympus. I enjoyed faster over all but I don’t think that I would replay it again

13:34 Classic "one character makes up a name of someone to justify something that they're doing, and the person they're making the name up to says that there IS actually someone working for them with that name, but didn't actually do what the first-mentioned character said they did" moment.

You know that barrier at the end of the street in the harbour district? The amount of time I just spend trying to hover around it, coz on the inside of the game box it list all the locations and one of them is the naughty otsel and I always thought if I could get past that barrier I could get to it. I never could.

I assume The Lost Frontier got negative fan reception as a PS2 game in 2009 because, remember, it's a PSP game in 2009 as well. That being said, which merit do you plan to look at it on?

The game was good but hilariously janky. I remember getting stuck in the frozen factory level trying to get out.
You had to slide an ice block to a ledge and then jump off of it to fly across to get to the exit. But it barely worked. It was surreal.
The wood cutting lodging level was also archaic, I remember getting lost

I'm looking forward to TLF review since I actually liked that game. Keyword; liked. Not loved.
I thought it had some neat ideas and the story calling back to TPL promotional materials/bible was interesting. IIRC those materials said that if the Precursors finish building a world then they don't leave any of their technology laying around and the inhabitants have no idea that they even existed. Unlike the world in the Jak series where you can see their tech laying around all over the place, buried in rock, etc. The game actually playing around with the idea that the world was unfinished was interesting, I just wish they pushed the concept further. Dark Daxter I kind of like the idea of, but there's issues with the concept, and the execution was dreadful. I kind of want to go on but I feel I've rambled enough.

Meh, to be honest this is my least favorite Jak game. For all of its incredible graphics and "superior story", the two ratchets, Jak X and TLF despite its huge flaws were much more fun to me, especially when doing 100%. Daxter is the only one that bores me to death imo.
