It's quite absurd how many medals there are in swimming. A bunch of identical competitions, with like 50m difference. Why is there even a separate event for each of these? I am not denying that phelps is the greatest of all time, but the amount of medals reflect the stupid amount of events he could compete in compared to these other atheletes
There are different strokes (backstroke, freestyle, butterfly, breast) lengths, 50 m, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, some are individual races, some are team relays. Each swimming race is very different
Imagine sprinting has these events:
backward sprint, lateral sprint, 50m, 75m, 125m, 150m, 4 x [50/100/150/200] with [freestyle/medley], 200m individual medley...etc
By no other swimmer has a number of medals that's even close to Phelps. It is not that easy being the best with completely different swimming techniques.

No hate for Phelps, he was best but swimming i think is only sport you can get so many medals. Unless you are at olympics 20 times. Its the matter of number of competitions.

Teófilo Stevenson won 3 straight gold medals in the olympic boxing discipline (1972 in Munich Germany, 1976 in Montreal Quebec Canada & 1980 in Moscow Russia)
His succesor too, Felix Savon : 1992, 1996 and 2000.
If Cuba didn't boycott 1984 and 1988 Olympics, Stevenson could have had 4 or 5. But Savon was the main favorite into the 1988, but could not take part either.

Yeah... Nikolai Andrianov, the most succesful male gymnastic athlete, including at WC. But Alexander Dityatin won most medals at one Olympic : 8 in Moscow 1980.
