    Okay but Derek Redmond and his dad absolutely made me cry. His physical and mental pain is so evident, and his dad jumping in straight away to help his son finish. I can't T_T

      I saw Derek Redmond in a "Celebrate Humanity" commercial, but until today, I had no idea about the full story, and it blows my tiny little mind. Wow. Just... just wow.

      That gets me every time I see it. First, for Derek to work that hard and come that far to have your body break when you need it most is the ultimate kick in the pants (plus I cant imagine the pain of snapping your hamstring!!!). But then having your dad come out to support you on the largest of stages, to be that solid rock to lean on like he probably has been for Derek's whole life, is a amazing thing to have. That's what a great parent is. That's what I tell myself every day when doing things for my kids. Be like Mr. Redmond.

    One of my favourite stories is how the Australian Peter Norman supported Tommie Smith and John Carlos during their Black Power salute and suggesting they share the pair of gloves. Just standing there quietly supporting in solidarity, even though it would impact his career. I believe the Americans were even pallbearers at his funeral.

      These people dedicate their lives to be the being the best of the best. They sacrifice so much to get where they are. It's hard to imagine giving that up, but their opponents are some of the only people in the world who've been through the same and they feel it. Especially in these individual sports where it's not us vs them, but each human against their mind. This is what I love about the olympics.

    With the Sara Renner one however, its more the fact you can hear him yelling to her whilst running with the pole that warms your heart, knocking his team out of medals THATS the Olympic spirit

    • @jeffthorpe1855
      @jeffthorpe1855 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The video only tells part of the story on the two x-country skiing events. Sara Renner (and there is a typo at the top, was competing in a two member team sprint event at Torino, not Toronto, in 2006) won a silver medal. The Norwegian coach would have been holding a spare ski pole, presumably to help a Norwegian entrant. In giving the spare to a Canadian, he helped the Canadians win a silver, and the Norwegians finished fourth. Sharing the silver medals with Sara Renner was Beckie Scott. Justin Wadsworth was a former American x-country ski competitor and he went on to coach the Canadian team.
      The fun part - Justin Wadsworth is married to Beckie Scott. I do not know any of these people, and it might be just too romantic to imagine that when Wadsworth helped out the Russian competitor at Sochi, he was thinking, a Norwegian coach's actions helped my wife win a silver medal at Torino so here is my chance to even the score. The Russian was out of medal contention however.

    It's truly a shame that the microcosm of the humanity in the Olympics where colour, religion, Nationality or anything else like that doesn't matter and all the competitors see each other for what they are, a human being that breathes the same, bleeds the same, hurts the same. It's sad we'll never have a world like this, but I guess the escape of the Olympics every 4 years to see acts like this can help that fantasy, help us dream, just a little.
