Watching the Olympics now (2024) and there’s many gymnasts who have incredible power and technique… but none match Nadia’s grace and elegance. There’s a certain fluidity in her movements that make her special.
The standard they have to live up to now is also insane. Every year they have to do more and more, push further and further which, while impressive, it definitely takes something away from the beauty and ease that these earlier gymnasts had. It’s practically impossible to get a perfect 10 in 2024
It's the body structure..lanky, lean has a built in grace in gymnastics, figure skating ..the muscular "compact" body may outperform in strength maneuvers, but the grace and beauty isn't there..
Wonder who else is watching the 2024 Olympics, impressed by the athleticism of current gymnasts, then found this and like me sat utterly entranced by the ethereal beauty of Nadia's performances? Breathtaking and somehow moving. I am as hypnotised now as I was a child watching all those years ago. Magical memories.

She has also made 5 year moves or techniques that have offcially been named by her. She has created the most new moves in the sport in history. She is changing the entire future of the sport. Nadia was a goat also but by shear number of rewards Simone is the best.

Well considering she weighs looks like about 95 or 100 lbs, it’s not that much to balance. She has no muscle mass like the gymnasts of today nor is she as powerful. Actually, compared to the gymnasts today to me she’s kind of boring.
Nadia ALWAYS made her performance elegant, never perfunctory. Even at this tender age, she was graceful and eloquent. This is what gymnastics looks like… not blasting out a series of moves, no matter how well they are executed. I’ll never tire of watching Nadia ❤❤❤
Gymnastics was art back then. People think it was easier bc they made it beautiful and graceful. Nobody today could do that or is as fit as Nadia. She was like a ballerina with perfect technique working with much older equipment. I’m an 80s baby but I remember people talking all the time about Nadia back then. One of a kind.
The performances of today are so much more difficult, the judges just won't give anyone 10s now, but a lot have done greater acts than hers. She WAS the best, but they have elevated now.

That’s debatable. Gymnastics today is far more hard than back then, hence why they could be stick thin and look “graceful”, because they didn’t have to do as much as today’s gymnasts. Gymnasts would eat Nadia alive in today’s world.

I was in Montreal in 1976 and watched Nadia get that first ever 10 in the sport and several more 10"s as the competition went on. In my opinion she is the best ever gymnast ....she just had something that the others didn't have. To see her make history was mind blowing. But on the other hand it was so sad and painful to watch Olga Korbut, the star of the "72 Olympics be over shadowed by Nadia and fall from grace. I really liked her too. Such is the way it goes. There will never be another Nadia.
I watched both Nadia and Olga Korbut (on tv!). Olga really took the world by storm in 1972. She had such an amazing smile and personality which was refreshing at a time when athletes behind the 'Iron Curtain' were considered to be dour and 'robotic'. But time marches on and Nadia deserved all her success. I'm not too interested in gymnastics now but I can remember so many names from that era. I really liked Ludmila Tourischeva.

I don't watch gymnastics as much now either, but when I do I just don't enjoy it like I did in the 70's. She makes everything look so easy, even the landing. When I look at other gymnasts, I'm scared they would get hurt, but not with Nadia. She's effortless.
That's what I was thinking! It seems like when you other gymnast, like todays. You're waiting and worried if they're going to put it off! With Nadia, you feel relaxed and confident that she is safely going to pull it off!!!
The balance beam routines of today do look like the gymnasts were one step from disaster and you see their intense concentration and even fear, but Nadia did made it look effortless.

This is my first time seen her, and she was amazing! So calm and the way that she moved from the uneven bars and the balance beam, I have never seen anything like that. She is flawless.❤
She was extremely serious, very precise , perfect balance , elegant, graceful, gracious and so confident that it was contagious to the public. You just knew she’s going to nail it every time perfect. This days champions they have like 50/50 to nail it or bounce like a ball landing. Nadia was like glued to that floor after each landing

Nadia was a half-starved 13-y-o. Her body did not earn her those 10s. Her drive, willingness to work, innate athleticism, and deep love of the sport earned them.
It amazes me everytime that Nadia's performance still outrun most olympians today. Her executions was spot on without any extra bits. Clean and wow, full stop. Truly amazing athlete ever.

Our standards of perfection have changed so much. Now, it’s ok to have a high difficulty level and perform relatively well and get a great score vs. having a great, creative, challenging routine and perform it flawlessly. This is what Nadia did, and she is beyond comparison even now.

I remember watching those Olympics and how much I thought she looked like a graceful little bird on the bars. In my mind, she will always be the greatest gymnist.

This girl is doing moves on the UB they could never pull off today. She makes the BB look so easy. These are the Olympics I like to watch.. when the athletes weren’t being over paid and pampered.
I was about 6 at the time but remember this like it was yesterday. The entire world watched open mouthed. I cannot overstate what a big moment it was in world culture, internationally... this was like an OJ Ford bronco moment. Nadia's 1976 Oly perfection has not been approached since. As powerfully athletic as the current crop is, they are beefed up and large- goes against the aesthetic of gymnastics, which as any student of gymnastics history knows, is not about athleticism and strength as much as it is about grace flexibility and agility. Which requires a petite and light frame. And was the norm once. They do this in current women's diving too, vs the pre-2012 divers. The grace is removed, replaced with uber athleticism with a side of PED. Not the same. There is a reason this Montreal set is still regarded as the pinnacle of gymnastic achievement. Anywhere anytime. Nadia made the cover of time magazine that week. Those issues go for $500+ on eBay for a reason! Just say no to steroids, people!

This is truly the art of gymnastics! Her movements were fast, gentle but firmly grounded. Nowadays, all gymnastics are too muscular. It makes their movements throughout the routines seem heavy and disconnected. Not smooth movements like the gymnastics in the past.
Even while watching our great gymnasts in 2024, I still always think of Nadia. I was glued to the screen watching her perfection. So beautiful. My favorite.
Where are the "great gymnasts of 2024"? It's been years since I've seen a decent gymnast. None of today's gymnasts could have even qualified under the high standards of the '70s, '80s, or '90s.

She makes everything look so easy, even the landing. When I look at other gymnasts, I'm scared they would get hurt, but not with Nadia. She's effortless.

That's what I was thinking! It seems like when you other gymnast, like todays. You're waiting and worried if they're going to put it off! With Nadia, you feel relaxed and confident that she is safely going to pull it off!!!
The balance beam routines of today do look like the gymnasts were one step from disaster and you see their intense concentration and even fear, but Nadia did made it look effortless.

This is my first time seen her, and she was amazing! So calm and the way that she moved from the uneven bars and the balance beam, I have never seen anything like that. She is flawless.❤

She was extremely serious, very precise , perfect balance , elegant, graceful, gracious and so confident that it was contagious to the public. You just knew she’s going to nail it every time perfect. This days champions they have like 50/50 to nail it or bounce like a ball landing. Nadia was like glued to that floor after each landing

Nadia was a half-starved 13-y-o. Her body did not earn her those 10s. Her drive, willingness to work, innate athleticism, and deep love of the sport earned them.

Our standards of perfection have changed so much. Now, it’s ok to have a high difficulty level and perform relatively well and get a great score vs. having a great, creative, challenging routine and perform it flawlessly. This is what Nadia did, and she is beyond comparison even now.
The scoring system needs another overhaul to give a better difficulty X execution mark to prevent the poorly done hard moves scoring so well.
She was just so calm and composed.

I have to disagree. Simone is all about big flips and fancy moves. Not graceful at all.
She is a great athlete, but not the best artistically.
@@karrenolsen435 this girl achieved perfectness with bizarre gracefull moves, insane. At that time was breath taking. The problem is that Simone now got great oponents on competition, so it does not look as astonishing as before. World is more connected now.

I remember watching those Olympics and how much I thought she looked like a graceful little bird on the bars. In my mind, she will always be the greatest gymnist.
She dances her way to all her routines...She is insanely graceful.I always find myself mesmerized by her performance since I was just a newborn the time she got her perfect 10.

I was about 6 at the time but remember this like it was yesterday. The entire world watched open mouthed. I cannot overstate what a big moment it was in world culture, internationally... this was like an OJ Ford bronco moment.
Nadia's 1976 Oly perfection has not been approached since. As powerfully athletic as the current crop is, they are beefed up and large- goes against the aesthetic of gymnastics, which as any student of gymnastics history knows, is not about athleticism and strength as much as it is about grace flexibility and agility. Which requires a petite and light frame. And was the norm once. They do this in current women's diving too, vs the pre-2012 divers. The grace is removed, replaced with uber athleticism with a side of PED.

Her movements were fast, gentle but firmly grounded. Nowadays, all gymnastics are too muscular. It makes their movements throughout the routines seem heavy and disconnected. Not smooth movements like the gymnastics in the past.
Even while watching our great gymnasts in 2024, I still always think of Nadia. I was glued to the screen watching her perfection. So beautiful. My favorite.
Where are the "great gymnasts of 2024"? It's been years since I've seen a decent gymnast. None of today's gymnasts could have even qualified under the high standards of the '70s, '80s, or '90s.
