WYR: 1927 Erskine and 1927 Chandler (those were exceptional cars). For what it's worth, I went to college with a guy named Erskine who was related - his family pronounced it er-skin, but like you said, I've heard both. Thank you as always. ~ Chuck. P.S. I'm sorry I'll miss the live show tomorrow, but I'm taking someone to his first car show - trying to do what I can to keep the hobby alive.
Aw man don’t be sorry it will be up later for everybody else to watch. I’m going to try to do an episode as well. I don’t know when that episode will come out probably right after the live events over… have fun at the car show. It would be really cool if you follow up see what his favorite cars are there. =)
You do the car community a great service, by showing us all the wide diversity of vehicles, once available. How different the planet would be, if more brands were available and some genuine choices existed. The same applies for engines and gearboxes.
12:40 As I've remarked elsewhere, Erskine was a tragic figure, did the wrong thing for the right reason. Studebaker's history after the death of John M. Studebaker (last of the five Studebaker brothers, the only one to live into the twentieth century, and the only one to see the Studebaker name on an automobile) was marked by mis-steps and bad business decisions, even under Erskine's successors, Harold Vance and Paul Kaufman. WYR1: I like the looks of the Erskine (ER-skin) but the Pontiac appears to be the most car for the money. I believe the Nash had a torque tube driveshaft and (call it a prejudice of a derelict soul) I just don't like torque tube drive. WYR2: Never heard of the Chandler before. I believe it was Mae West who said, "When given the choice of two evils, I always take the one I haven't tried first."
Watching this after the Ruxton feature. The cream and caramel color scheme looks a lot like the featured Ruxton, and Dietrich did a masterful job in making a modestly-priced car look more important than the price would indicate.
Gee, the back seat room is incredible in these. I always used to laugh about the 73 Cadillac drop top, in particular, because it was the easiest to see. That had less rear legroom than a mini minor.
On the rear bumpers, those really aren't "overriders" but brackets holding the bumpers together. Reliability aside, Studebakers were kinda known for being underpowered, but I would bet that this Erskine was as fast, if not a bit faster than a Ford Model "A".
I am a lifelong automotive enthusiast (more accurately a car-nut or motor-head). I always learn new things from your videos, Erskine was a new one to me. Beautiful car, I can see it's appeal. Thanks for posting.
These cars all look very similar, except the Chrysler, so I'll pick that for the second group. The rest are a coin flip. Look forward to the livestream tomorrow!
Great show Jay, I would definitely drive the Erskine over the rest of the options. I’m not worried about the continental motor, I have one in one of my antique tractors.
For WYR, I’m going with the Pontiac, and the Chrysler. As a former NJ boy, I would have pronounced it as er-skin, but what do I know? Let me change my mind about the Chrysler. After watching the B roll in the end, I’ll take the Erskine instead. Even after that sad story of Mr. Erskine’s self-delete.
Your wife goes to bed at six? I am a complete night owl, so this is a bit of a shock to my system, even to hear. Even when I was working an 80-hour week, I would not have more than 4~ 5 hours of sleep at best. Or, does she work a late shift, perhaps?
At a guess, those rearview mirrors are useless and vibrate like a jelly. This seemed to be true for all such extended length mirrors. I wonder why it took so long for companies to standardise on door mounting? Apart from that, she is a handsome beast. I agree about the two-tone colour, it is like a two-tone shoe. A Quick question, Jay, do these old timer cars have heaters? Or effective heaters? Another query, about how purchasing was arranged; did a car purchase require financing normally, or did people save up, as I cannot imagine a line of credit, the very concept would have seemed offensive to most people in the early days. These are simply additional details which interest me. No pun intended.
Man, that rear heater must’ve been the cat’s meow! I haven’t seen one that early before, and it’s even more surprising to see one on a pretty low priced car for the day.
Hi Jay! The Erskine is a RARE bird! Even though I'm a fan of Studes, I am not really a fan of the Erskine, either, probably for the same reason as you. Besides the Rockne was a much better-looking machine (It too has a dark association, as Knute Rockne was killed in that plane crash, while traveling out west to promote the Rockne car for Studebaker). That engine has such a SMALL bore! Wow! No wonder it was underpowered. WYR#1, Pontiac here. Had that nice split-head six. #2 Chandler! That one is SO COOL!
Thanks again Jay for sharing another rare car with us and from my experience wich was listening to my father and uncle’s that were there back in the day I believe it is pronounced er- skin as in skin. For the WYR I’ll take a 27 Pontiac and the 27 erskine. Have a good one and looking forward to the big 500 tomorrow, yeah buddy 😊
WYR 27 Pontiac, 27 Chrysler The Erskine is not a bad looking car and I would have picked it over the Chrysler were it not for the Erskine's flaws. I can't see myself getting into the front seat. They should have moved the seat back a few inches. But the deal breaker is the under powered, unreliable Continental engine. I thought Continental engines were well respected. I wonder what went wrong here. I guess all manufactures have designed a poor engine.
WYR the Nash has nicer fenders. And being a phaeton fan the Erskine looks newer than the Chandler. I'm pretty sure it's "er-skin" since that's how they pronounce the name of the college. The Erskine is a simple plain car but it has good styling lines. Not good to start a car line with an engine which doesn't last; people remember such things. No one could have known what the future would be in '27 but there were lots of lower-end cars being made so without something to set you apart, competition would have been tough. When the Model A came out it it's great price and the "Ford" reputation, that meant it was all over for most of them. With the scrap metal drives of WW2 there can't be many of these left.
I think this is a handsome car and I agree about the colors. I really like the horns under the headlights but I wonder if they are original. I would choose the 1927 Pontiac Landau Sedan and the 1927 Chandler Six.
Originally thought that too, but the sparking ignition control is on the dashboard so that could only be one other thing which would be the headlights cause there isn’t another switch or anything for it
It seems odd to me that, as an "entry level" car, the exterior looks so expensive (and beautiful, to my eyes), while the interior is where they didn't spend any money. Then again, maybe people wanted to impress the neighbors. By any chance, did your research include reading an article by Car & Driver, titled "Who Killed Studebaker"? I think it was the March 1964 issue. BTW, I pronounce it as Er-skin. WYR= Pontiac and Chrysler. No clue about the song. Great video again, Jay!
@@What.its.like. I have the magazine. I will try to scan it and email it to you. (The article, not the whole magazine!) It may be a while until I get it to you, I'm having eye surgery tomorrow!
Jay, did you find some source that confirmed Erskine was pronounced “Er-skyne”??? Otherwise every other time I’ve heard this name, it is pronounced “Er-skin”. And if not, don’t say I didn’t tell you the same thing last time. 😊
Great choices I totally agree especially with the inflation spikes that we’ve been seeing. It’s nice to go back and look and see how much things cost before greed and other factors that I won’t get into on here lol The inflation, calculator doesn’t give the full picture though because I feel like $15,000 would be a ton of money back then because there wouldn’t have been as many people to have as many transactions and that’s what the calculator supposed to represent, but I don’t think that you could ever have a real representation of what that’s like
Glad you ran across an Erksine, it is kind of haunting the man it was named after suicided, but glad the cars themselves are preserved. I learned to pronounced the name stressing the "I" but to each his own, nice example. First pick 27 Nash second 27 Chandler. The blue Eldorado in the last episode was that same car in an older video, because it looked like the same car including the gold sabre wheels, neat if you caught the same car twice.
Yes, I went back and watched that older episode with the El Dorado I still can’t get over how much everything has changed the format, delivery everything.. that car is in John ‘s personal collection, the owner of the dealership he has two 57 and a 58.. As well as a plethora of other cars, but he is selling the blue one. I never featured the green one if the blue one wasn’t for sale, I was going to shoot the green one. The pink one has already been featured, which is the 58 but honestly I might redo that I think I could do it a whole lot better justice now… Awesome choices

In the US too.

Depends if the model A had the Mitchell over drive.. 40 hp with 4 cylinder isn’t as bad as 40 hp with a six
