I had a 283 and a Power glide in my '66 Impala 2 door........ Good Engine!
The engine design consultancy I worked for worked with the foundry that made the engine blocks for this. I visited them a couple times and got to see a few blocks. It is a very high-tech place with a lot of very smart people working there. I learned a ton about casting from them. I also got to work with the guy who tuned the engine controller for this. He got to take it on the development track. Another intelligent guy and it was cool to talk with him. Easy choices for me in the WYR. I'd choose the SS and the 1926 Type 35. I've seen a Type 35 around here a couple times but it has to be a replica. I'd still like to talk to the guy who owns it.
In the 1990s a man in Arizona bought the rights to Packard. His prototype was gorgeous. The engine was 3 banks of 4 cyclenders for a W 12. Not having the funds, investors or supporters, the car died with the prototype.
Wow I never knew that thank you so much for sharing that
Excellent video. I was never that impressed by the W16 because VW makes a W12 and therefore a W24 was more than possible. To few cylinders and too many turbo's. Nice clean(ish) duel stage supercharged W24; that's an engine worth owning. You can keep your Bugatti's, not interested in any overhyped and over exposed car. Yes the pre WW2 cars are quite beautiful and some of the engineering is interesting. Just not my cup of coffee. Pete.
Personally, I'm not in a new cars either but the Bugatti Veyron isn't a new car anymore I'm with you I'm not into cars that makes you give up everything to go fast I prefer cars that are fun to drive mechanical feeling cars were you are the driver no computer intervention but that's just me This engine tho, is definitely something tho and the veyron was the car of my late teenage years =)
Hello Jay! What an absolutely amazing engineering tour-de-force! Here's a somewhat obscure fact. During WWI Bugatti designed that U-16 engine for aircraft use. The idea was to put an aircraft type cannon between the cylinder banks for more firepower that would fire through the propeller hub, pretty much like the Me/Bf-109 of WWII. Anyway, a man named King decided the engine should be licence built in the U.S. Over here the name of the engine was the King-Bugatti. Who do you think got the contract to build these engines in the U.S.? Yep,the Duesenberg Brothers, who had a plant in New Jersey then, before they wanted to make cars and moved to Indianapolis. I have seen one or two of these engines in museums. I BELIEVE the one in the Museum of The United States Air Force has a plate on it that says King-Bugatti, Manufactured by Duesenberg Motors of Elizabeth NJ. Fred and Augie got inspired by the idea of a 16 cylinder aero-engine, and built their own massive 16 cylinder aircraft engine that put out an amazing (at the time) 800 horsepower! It was too big for any of the planes of the day, though! Duesenberg built marine engines at their New Jersey plant, for patrol boats, etc. during WWI WYR, Chiron and Type 35, of course! Those were the quintessential Bugatti racing cars, and probably the best they ever produced After WWI the Molsheim area became part of France, and so the original Bugattis are known as French cars.
The Bugatti is my dream car ! $2,000 oil changes maybe not so much ! 😂
@@scottymoondogjakubin4766 yeah I remember watching all the top gear episodes with my brother that's my brothers dream car is a Bugatti SS mine has always been a type 35 but after seeing one I don't know lol they are small

@@What.its.like. Take a look at the Bugatti Type 22 A more rounder horse collar grill and shorter wheel Base ...🤔 Great little race car 😍👍 Enjoy your day ✌️☺️
WYR: All of them.
I do love these kind of cars, the fullsize models, but not a fan of these asphalt scratchers. Customizing is like disabling the whole treasure.
The German Ford Fk 1000 Pick up version got the same door/ramp thing, but on its backside, not sideways.
Jay, Virgil Exner also tried to revive the Duesenberg in 1966, with coachwork by Ghia: th-cam.com/video/AifSSa6QA58/w-d-xo.htmlsi=NJAaTDs-VJSGH9Le
Great car, but these stickers... not so much. That's only in my opinion.
WYR The Veyron because it was the first super-supercar blowing the whole world's mind in the process. And the type 35 because the only thing better than a new Bugatti is an old one 😎 Eat your heart out Enzo you old slowpoke 🤣
Awesome choices I'm amazed at how many people chose to type 35. I thought I would be in a weird category of my own by choosing that my brothers on the other side of the spectrum the Veyron is his dream car.
If I'm not mistaken the VW group also owns a large part of Freightliner now too
Nope, Freightliner is owned by Daimler-Benz. VW just bought Navistar.
WYR: No, thank you. Maybe a '66 Coronet with a 273 or a '67 Belvedere II with the 318. Of course, Studebaker had its own 289 in passenger cars from 1956 through 1964, and I'd rather have an Avanti R1or a '64 GT Hawk than any of the Ford products offered as choices here. The '62 Mercury Meteor would be an interesting variation at a Fairlane drive-in meet.
I'll tale the T-Bird sedan, pre-schnozzola face.
SS 26 Bugatti... more roadable, in fact, there is a guy who does just that.... Jay Leno invited him to come by, so he drove across the country (and back) for said visit... On Jay's channel.
Type 35 and Blue one
Worst engine ever.
Olds diesel
Excellent coverage of an amazing engine! Ettore Bugatti was a perfectionist. To work in his factory, the story goes, an applicant was given a solid steel rod, and told to make one end a square, using only a hand file. Then the finished product had to have the *exact* dimensions as directed by Bugatti. I would imagine that he would be impressed by the W-16 engine. That transmission looks like you could use it in a semi truck! WYR= Really, Jay? If I could afford one, I could afford them all! But the Type 35 would definitely end up in my garage! P.S.: When the Veyron came out, I remember that Michelin virtually hand made the tires, and that they were $21,000 *_each_* !!!
Type 35
VW did NOT buy Rolls-Royce. They only bought Bentley, and with it, the factory facilities in England. This is also where Rolls-Royce had been built. The name and Rolls-Royce trademark was purchased by BMW. Because of this, BMW had to re-create Rolls-Royce from the ground up. During this transition period, BMW worked with VW/Bentley until BMW had built it's own manufacturing facilities. Before all the mergers, Rolls-Royce had tried using BMW V12 engines but R-R buyers felt that the BMW engine didn't have enough torque. They continued using the traditional R-R/Bentley V8, in both Turbocharged and naturally aspirated versions. Remember, R-R/Bentley cars weighed close to 3 tons. Although there was alot of aluminum in the bodies, the frames were built like a HD 1 ton truck. BMW/R-R continued to buy Bentley V8's until BMW could build it's own engines capable of pushing it's new ground up re-designed R-R(based on BMW's "7" series, but oh so much larger).
Thank you so much for pointing that out.. =) I totally left out that bmw got the name rights
@@What.its.like. I seem to remember that BMW had believed that it got the manufacturing facilities also. BMW only got the R-R name. Imagine, once prestigious British brands are now owned by German companies! Almost as bad is the Jaguar brand is owned by a cheap-o car manufacturer of India.
Probably the most modern you have done. And type 35 because i could actually maintain it.
It is the most modern Bugatti veyrons seem to be in there is a type 35 in the pipeline still can't get over how small that was in person
Type 35 , no doubt about it.❤
Ettore Bugatti was born in Milan Italy soooo not german but would became a french citizen in later life. Also a young Enzo Ferrari was a mechanic on the bugatti team.

Very nice motorcycle hauler!
Totally agree
Looks like a Buick 8 engine less 2 cylinders
Yes it does =)
I always liked Rancheros and El Caminos. I had a '57 Ranchero many years ago.
Awesome
I like the "requirements" of the time: high quality ash trays on both sides in the rear - those were usb 3c connections of the time. At least the car doesn't have a cigarette dispenser built into the steering wheel, an invention of 1941 for some American cars.
there's a rolling dial to the left behind the steering wheel, which lets you adjust the brightness of the speedometer as well as the screen
I have since found that but it dims the lighting of all the buttons as well
@What.its.like. I see. I don’t seem to have an issue with it because of muscle memory.
Hey Jay! I still think these were all a fabulous concept! Wish they were still around! With trucks costing so much these days, these type of vehicles would be welcome. Love the styling of pretty much ALL the Ranchero's up to the seventies. And that 351 2V was a GOOD engine! Enough power and torquey, too! Same engine was in my first car. Think, though that they have put a twin snorkle air cleaner assembly on the one shown, those were more common on 4V engines, as far as I can remember. Might be wrong, though! The warning in the bed to not cut holes in the gas tank was pretty clever!! Knew your camera wouldn't fit in the glove box, the 1968-1971 Torinos had the same size box! Mine would just about fit the owner's manual package and some other papers. But still these are FINE vehicles! Would love to have one today! WYR 1971 Ranchero, 1957 Ranchero.
Hi Jay! Thanks for covering the Appersons and the V-8 in particular. Edgar and Elmer Apperson helped Elwood Haynes build a very early automobile. For some time, the vehicle was thought to be the earliest American Gas-Powered Automobile, until word about the Duryea Brothers got around. As you related in the video, the brothers broke off from Haynes and started building their own cars. Both brothers were mechanically inclined and were a REAL mechanics, and machinists. Elmer died at that car race, but Edgar lived until 1959. Evidently it was the Apperson's skill that made Haynes' first car really work. WYR Apperson and Scripps-Booth. Somewhere in my files I have a transcript of a short newspaper article from the early 1950's and they interviewed Ed Apperson.
Thank you so much for sharing all that insight and information just finishing up tonight's engine episode on the other side of the spectrum Bugatti W16
2:53 The '58 Edsel was only available with the FE 361 and the MEL 410 engines.
Yep
On the first scenario, I choose the ford. In the second one, I would choose the 57 model. I really like the 57 having owned a 57 ford station wagon in the 70s.
Sweet choices
Great episode. Thanks for posting. 68 was a great year for the Tbird. I would take the bird over all offerings.
66 Falcon/Ranchero has always been one of my favorite Fords
It is worth noting that Graham brothers brand existed as Graham until 1927 when by buying Paige it becomes Graham-Paige to drop Paige name in 1930 to call all cars Graham until 1940. It didn't help to work together with Huppmobile in 1939-1940. In 1947 it becomes part of Kaiser-Frazer. In 1953 it becomes part of Keiser-Jeep. In 1970 it becomes part of AMC. In 1988 it becomes part of Chrysler. In 2014 becomes part of FCA. In 2021 it becomes part of Stellantis.
Boy, does that bring back memories. I bought a 1973 Ranhero squire with the 302 motor. One of my favorite cars.
Lol name that tune was TOO easy this week
Hahaha yeah back when they were easier
One of my favorite Rancheros!.Love the lines on these!.
I had a 56 Century 2 door. right at the time gas first went over a dollar. This car was very thirsty... had to get something smaller. Room mate had a 59 Galaxie at same time
For a short time I had a 1958 Ranchero with a 352 FE and a 3 speed on the column. It was well used when I got it. It started its life as a delivery car for a feed and grain store and the name of the store was faintly still on the door. With out any weight on the back this was a crazy tire smoker I was told the payload was higher than a F100 at the time
