Love the poverty ash tray in the back for the kids. Cars were just better in the past.
Thanks for showing that one. Believe I asked about it when you did the Tbird next to it.
@@josephcrafa2694 yeah I just wanted to spread it out a little bit because we just did the car. I didn't want it to feel like a rerun... even though this is totally different than that one
I liked your spiel at the beginning. Hope you find someone to collaborate with. Just try not to force it. If they seem uninterested then don't waste your time pursuing them because it would most likely not translate well on video. Sweet Polara btw. I liked listening to the back story
Yeah, I totally agree. There's so much more I could say to that point but I'm not gonna do it here. I might address it in a video. But I will add this one. I don't know if you watch vinwiki which is a really cool car finding app if you have the Vin number, you can plug it in and find your car or where it was last registered. They do stories on there and there's various people that tell the stories. One person said that he had a dealership in Ohio, so I was like huh maybe he would be up to something ( not Ed bolan someone else ) I reached out and he got back to me and said yeah drop by the shop whenever so I did and he wasn't there so I got the tour I've reached out a twice more just to let them know I'm interested, but just going to let that one go because we aren't into that same cars anyway.. He is into the exotics I personally could care less they don't do anything for me ( just my opinion) but yeah not forcing anyone to do anything I'm here if you want to talk cars =)
PS my vote for the Plymouh or Ponti.
Sweet choices
i was always of the school of thought Mercuries were always seriously underated. but this is an amazing example of what they were doing. My aunt had a 62' Meteor , I had a 65' Comet caliente, All dependable beautiful cars. Thanks for posting !
Terrific review, Jay. It would be great if someone would send that dash cover to Just Dashes in Los Angeles. It looks like the warping caused it to not be testable for glove box room.
Pontiac
WYR: 1. 59 Mercury 2. 59 Ambassador
Awesome choices
You've inspected/feed back, a number of very nice wagons. But these beauties would be in my top 5. Colony Park even the name sounds sophisticated. 59 DeSoto wagon you checked out a while ago, stunning but no 4 or 2 door H/T's. For me, Merc's equal is the 1957 DeSoto Explorer fully optioned. Though again not a H/T many special features were available on the Explorer. Just one other point, no mention of the MEL 430 cid option on Mercury? Keep up the great work.
I couldn't find anything saying that the 430 was optional on commuter.. I was also equally surprised to see that the 383 280 hp version was the pace engine for the commuter because in the car you could get the 312 or the 383. I didn't see any literature saying that the 430 was optional. This is a site that I get a lot of specs from and they didn't have the 430 listed as an engine that could be in that car www.automobile-catalog.com/make/mercury/full-size_mercury_5gen/full-size_mercury_5gen_commuter_wagon/1959.html#gsc.tab=0
Call me crazy but I would rather 1960 Plymouth since it somehow reminds me about one of some unusual Studebaker design.
Good video thank you😊😊
Thank you so much for watching happy you dig this one =)
I love it when kids describe the cars I grew up with😂
=) I'm 35
Pontiac Safari hands down. I didn't realize how nicely the Mercury's wagons were styled. I am seeing more wagons at car shows in the last few years. I think guys need a good challenge.
Very nice survivor, she'd be a dream for anyone to own!
Totally agree
Very nice the late 60s early 70s Lincolns. All class and well built. I love the 61-69 Lincolns as well please do a episode on them if U haven't already done so. Cheers👍
Most definitely
Ford had a habit of sticking the gas tank sideways in the left rear quarter. The only trouble with that is that it points the tank seam straight towards the ground leaving it vulnerable. If you hit the seam coming down on a rock, it will begin to leak there in a way that it can't be patched. So you have to be careful if you take her on the gravel roads.
5:41..383 as std seems odd cos the 312y block was base offering amongst '59 line(exc.Parklane series).
Wagon came with the 383 that was the base engine and the only engine for commuter
My dad owned a 67 Impala sedan 327 when I was young down here in Australia I loved that car. Thanks for sharing.👍 PS I'll take the 69 LTD please.
First time I've Heard of the Commuter Station Wagon 3:40
Plymouth Suburban 1:24
Rambler was the first to offer a hardtop station wagon in 1956.
WYR #1: 1959 Mercury. WYR #2: 1959 Amvassador
Bingo great choices
1956 Rambler Cross-country I would believe the first hardtop s/wagon (4dr). Sold as Nash/Hudson that year only.
The safety speed minder varied according to who built the car. Buick and c2 Corvettes simply had a buzzer when you exceeded the set speed. Pontiac added a SAFEGUARD indicator light. Chrysler had a increased throttle effort when the driver reached the set speed. '58 Edsel had the speedometer dial glow red when the set speed was reached. I'm not sure how Mercury warned the driver.
Front end: I like the 58 better, to me, the 59 just looks like a Ford up front. Side profile: the 59 is definitely sleeker. WYR's....1. You're right, not fair at all! I want them all! 2. I'll go with the Merc, strictly because of the hardtop. (Funny that you kids think hardtops look alien. In my mind, when I was a kid, if it wasn't a hardtop, it wasn't sh*t! Actually, I still feel that way!) That was a clever and funny comment about the "gentle reminder", you nailed it! Excellent vid as always Jayman!
Toodalooooooo!!!!!!!
Beautiful Hudson, enjoyed the video.
I think I would take the Mercury and the Edsel. I do like the styling and the multi coloring of the 58.
Toodalooooooo!!!!!!!
Cool example of the American family wagon back in the day , I’ll take the 59 mercury in the first WYR and the rambler in the 2 WYR as the rambler is great looking and was the first hardtop wagon in 56. Thanks for another cool video Jay
Post watching comments: 59 Dash Look again at the hood ornament, that is an M not a V! ( I spent a bit of my life staring at one of those) 59 Merc Commuter 59 Merc Commuter (but my parents almost bought an Edsel instead of the Mercury in 1959) Thanks Jay!
Ok, ok, I can't believe I'm saying this but the wierd late 1950s mercury styling is growing on me!!!see what you did, jay!!!
Ha! I feel the same way. I was never a fan of Merc styling, but I'm coming around to it too!
Another cool 1959 car. My picks here would be the Suburban and the Ambassador Cross Country.
Toodalooooooo!!!!!!!
For WYR, it’s the Mercury Commuter both scenarios. Interestingly the picture of the Mercury used here was the same color as my Grandmother’s Mercury Monterrey sedan. Maybe that’s why I went with it. Again, another nicely kept survivor car, I am guessing anyway judging from the steering wheel. I never remember seeing these station wagons out in the wild, even as a kid. Come to think about it my Grandmother’s sedan was only one of two I remember seeing out on the road back in the sixties.
I guess I have a wandering eye when it comes to cars, but I saw your backpack next to the front wheel of that Buick Riviera. I’m guessing it’s going to be featured soon?
Cars stretched into wagons were more interesting then. My WYR picks are the Catalina and the Edsel. Thanks Jay.
Sweet choices
Toodalooooooo!!!!!!!
Elon also built an Edsel, but he calls it cybertruck.
I think the cyber truck looks more like if a DeLorean and a Lamborghini countach had a kid that would be the cybertruck Have you ever seen one in person? They're huge. I have a 52 Chevy 1 ton Dually with a 8.5 foot stake bed one park next to me one day and my truck actually looked small
I have seen the Airstream in many pictures and videos, but did not realize until this video that it in many ways it is similar in style to the VW Beetle or vice verse, and to some degree the Renault 2CV. This car though is obviously much nicer both inside and out.
It’s interesting looking at those 58 and 59 comparison photos. If you didn’t know which was which, it would be hard to figure out which was newer.
Totally agree
I really like these, the hood ornament is a stylized M. 👍
Rambler had the first hardtop wagon in 1956.
@@alanblanes2876 bingo =)
The 59 is sleeker, looking thinner and more modern than the 58. The front of the 58 reminds me of an Edsel 🤣 Nice styling details for the post jet-age rocket era with nothing overdone. Folks go gaga over Chevy's Nomad as if it's the only 2-door wagon but clearly it ain't. This was about as modern as you could get back them with power everything though it seems to lack A/C which was probably optional. Quite a cool machine for a wagon 😎WYR Liking the Pontiac with it's trademark split-grille in front. The Mercury barely edges out the Rambler for me. I always liked the Rambler's styling but they still used a flathead 6 ☹
@@P_RO_ the American series used the flying Scott flathead the rambler series used the ohv 195.6 and the ambassador live had the 327 v8 all made by amc and that 327 was super underrated for what it was
@@What.its.like. I'm sure you're right. My AMC knowledge is scattered and spotty but Iike 'em anyway.
@@P_RO_ that's my favorite 50s era of AMC. The 59 cross country is my favorite wagon of all time but I don't know what engine would take because the 196 claims allegedly will get up to 32 miles to the gallon, which is pretty insane. That's better than a lot of cars now and that's a single barrel carburetor. It doesn't have a lot of power though, but not bad It's like driving a Prius with a standard transmission, but that 327 was legendary. It's the same engine that was used in the Rambler rebel couple years prior fastest car of the 50s. Also to add to the confusion and 1959 Rambler offered a V8 and it was called the rebel but it's not the same rebel from years previous it was a 260 CID if I remember correctly
They should do a Transformers movie with this car 😊
I'm going to guess that the first hardtop wagons were the Buick and Olds starting in 57, maybe 55. That "doohickey" (I love these technical terms) appears to be the cover for the power steering reservoir. I _think_ the P/S pump was driven off the front of the crankshaft, as were Lincolns. The pillar you were talking about at 4:13 is the C pillar; the B pillar is what the rear doors hang off of. The rearmost pillars are the D pillars. I think 59 was the last year where Mercury was more Lincoln based than Ford. In 60, the cars were based more on Fords. Mercury's moniker in the late 50s was "The Big M", which is why the 57/58 had a gigantic 'M' in the grille. I hope that car isn't "out on the sales floor" yet- butts in the ashtray, and junk in the storage area in back, no spare tire cover, and a doohickey for a P/S pump reservoir top would turn off many buyers, unless the car was dirt cheap. WYR= Merc, Edsel (for years in the late 70s there was a 59 Edsel wagon parked at Rockford Speedway in Rockford IL. Wonder what happened to it?) Yet another fun vid, Jay!
1956 Rambler four door hardtop wagon, 1955 Chevrolet and Pontiac two door hardtop wagon and 1957 Mercury two door and four door hardtop wagons.
Technically the 1955-57 Chevy Nomad/Pont Safari had pillarless door glass. Unique
I had a 1965 Impala wagon which apparently had a torsion bar counterbalancing spring in the tailgate because one day, while lowering it, there was a loud BANG and from then on the tailgate was ridiculously heavy, kinda like the unassisted tailgate on my F-150. I still love wagons, and I agree this hardtop model is extra cool.
=)
WYR: All of them.
Can't go wrong with any of them they all look great in their own way
@What.its.like. Absolutely.
I believe the first hardtop wagon was 1956 Rambler Cross Country.
Bingo
Oooh. I didn't think of AMC. I posted that 57 Buick/Olds were first. I like your answer better.
@@61rampy65 Yep, it never occurred to me that AMC was the fashion leader regarding the hardtop wagon.
Chevy Nomad
Cool write in 1st hardtop 4 door wagon 1956 rambler which could be had in either Nash or Hudson models
Was a 2 door, but the doors didn't have frames around the windows.
