- A lot of people are drawn to shotguns for home defense. My opinion is that they are a terrible choice for that purpose. This video explains why.

Ok, this whole video is crap, even the whole thing about bird shot being practically useless at close range, really??? Have you SEEN what bird shot does to something at that 15ft range you kept talking about?!?!?!?
As a retired 28 year LEO for a very large Western sheriff’s department, if I know that my family or I are in imminent danger, the very first weapon I will retrieve is a 12-gauge pump shotgun loaded with buckshot. Nothing has the close range brutality and lethality of a shotgun.

I'd argue a sub machine gun matches the brutallity and lethality of a shotgun but sadly they're significantly harder to obtain. Were it not for these unconstitutional and inhumane laws surpressed SMG's would probably be the king when it came down to home defense.

In a lot of cases it is a great choice. Within its limitations, a shotgun is the most powerful tool a civilian can get their hands on. Training is the key.
a good example...... if you have neighbors within a hundred feet. A shotgun, weapon light and a pair of electronic ear pro and most are going to be good to go.
There are also plenty of reliable semi auto shotguns out now, no need to worry about short stroking.

I disagree. A shotgun can be, is a, has been for years, a very effective tool for home protection. Recoil is not that bad, especially in semi autos and if using a double barrel, pump, ect, a good recoil pad along with reduced recoil ammo, recoil is not much. Can also use a 20 gauge if a 12 is too much. A shotgun doesn't need a lifetime of training to be effective with it. An hour here and there once a week or every few days, the user will be effective enough to protect themselves in their home. I haven't seen or heard of not one self defence case in response to a home invasion in which the shotgun failed. If so, please provide some sources. Sure a shotgun isn't for everybody, but can't the same be said about every firearm? Not to mention, a shotgun offers more versatility to the user that fits their criteria for their situation, more so than any pistol, AR-15, PCC, ect, ever could. As far as lethality goes, ain't nobody taking a load of buckshot to the chest and walking away or even making it to the next room unless they had armor on. I don't care what firearm a person prefers to have or use, but becoming familiar with it and knowing how to use it is personal responsibility that should be done as a responsible gun owner, seems like common sense to me. Lastly, Paul Harrell demonstrated why shotguns don't suck for home defense, and out of all the gun tubers on here that said otherwise, he was the only to prove so with demonstration, data, experience, and common sense knowledge.
I don't think anyone is really disagreeing that the shotgun is king when it comes to blowing big hole in sh!t. It's more I think time's are changing and that there are so many alternatives that may better suit an individuals needs. 👍 bottom line is use what you are most proficient with. 😁

Yeah, I think a video titled " why a shotgun may or may not be best for you" would be better. Everybody has preferences and some sort of limitations so having correct information is more beneficial.

@@sway696 well said...I have a 12GA..shotgun but honestly I don't want to use it for home defense it's like my last choice because of recoil...I prefer my Beretta 92FS 9mm it's accurate and I'm more proficient with IT
One thing that really helped me manage 12 gauge recoil was learning to properly shoulder the gun, i shoot my AR a lot and i like to put the stock in my shoulder pocket a bit high up because it doesnt have hardly any recoil and it allows me to not have to bend my neck so far down.
When i first shot my 12 gauge the same way it kicked the piss out of me and i wondered how you can manage the recoil, then i found youre supposed to put the stock on your peck muscle and once i started shouldering the gun on my peck instead of my shoulder the recoil became so much easier to absorb.

Same here. For me, a handgun is to back up my shotgun, rifle, or carbine.
Everyone is different tho I prefer my pistols to my shotgun ..only time I would use the 12GA...over my pistol is if I was barricaded in my bedroom lol🤷♂️.

butt-stroke when needed. As to not enough rounds... HA! My Mossy 500 has 7+1 and that's a lot of firepower in a
gun fight. I use 27-pellet #4 buck and it is very effective on plywood targets, so should work quite well in a gun fight.
Recoil is not an issue for everyone. At nearly 6' 3" and 240 lbs. it's a minor irritant. Body armor? Two words - head
shot. Agree that the sound of racking the slide is characteristic of a shotgun but the sight of your criminal buddy
coming apart at the seams from a shotgun blast will be a lot more convincing than any sound. Yeah, a lot of us
could do a lot worse than being armed with a shotgun, which is one of the most versatile guns there is. A 12-ga
load of BBs would be devastating at the close range inside most homes.

I think no matter the firearm the most important thing is to train and know your weapon.

Have to disagree on this one. Most civilian involved shootings are resolved with 3 shots or less so capacity is mute, plus with practice you can get fast; and shot cards with shell holders are available. With the wide variety of shot you can tailor the gun to your needs. And they're not that heavy or hard recoiling, if 12ga is too much go to 20ga. Also they're dirt cheap and reliable

I'd have to also agree #1 buckshot is one of the highest 1 shot stop rounds we can get our hands on. Long guns are just easier to shoot, sure you can train to be good with a pistol but "point shooting" which is what people do in SD situations 9 times out of 10 will be easier with a long gun than a pistol. In the home defense a shotgun is one of the best choices bar none.
You are not wrong, but you are not completely correct either. Everyone needs to weigh their home defense tool's advantages against the disadvantages and decide what's best for their unique situation.
A shotgun is absolutely devastating to anything it hits. A home invader will be stopped instantly if a shot connects, but that's only if it connects. But what happens if the person defending your home is your petite 110 lb wife who can't handle your 12 ga or 20 ga pump shotgun? I absolutely love my 12 ga and it's setup pretty well, but I don't expect my wife to be able to shoot it under stress.
Remember one of the rules of home defense (I'm probably making this up, but whatever); every adult in your home needs to be proficient in using the home defense firearm. In almost all cases, a SBR or pistol will have significant advantages over a powerful shotgun.
Also think about maneuverability of your shotgun while moving through your house, apartment or condo. Is your shotgun able to cut the corners better than a pistol, SBR or PCC? I highly doubt it.
Fighting in tight quarters or CQB almost always advantages shorter weapons, like pistols, SBRs, and PCCs. That's the whole reason those category of weapons were invented.
I used to use my 12 ga shotgun for home defense, but at that time I lived in a small apartment and it was impossible to maneuver in such small quarters. I then switched to a pistol and never looked back. The pistol is easier to retrieve, secure, reload, maneuver around, less recoil, less flash, less deafening without ear protection, more easily used by my small statured wife.
Everyone's home defense needs vary, so you need to decide what's best for you. 🍻
@@Uberragen21 Long story...Again - overall as a percentage a shotgun will do much better - as a home defense - in the hands of anyone, small, big, trained or not (point and shoot). And yes...I am a pistol/revolver shooter lover...!
@Contingency IBCT no ammos cheap right now, but you can get a new maverick 88 for $150 maybe less vs a hi-point for about the same and cheapest AR one would trust their life to is $700+
A semi auto shotgun is a great choice at close range (in house), especially If you’re a bird hunter like me. It’s the firearm I’m most comfortable with and spend the most time with.
Shotguns have been the go to weapon for home defense since they came out hundreds of years ago. When you are in a shooting situation the last things you are concerned about is recoil and muzzle flash because the fight is usually over in seconds. I will always remember when I was 9 years old and someone was trying to beat down our front door to get into our house late at night. I can still see my mother sitting in a chair with a double barrel shotgun in her arms waiting for that door to fly open and I can assure you she wasn't at all worried about recoil, muzzle flash or any other crap. Fortunately, the person did not persist and my mother didn't have to shoot, but she would have in a heartbeat. Memories from that night still haunt me but I know that at a distance of about 10' my mother would have sent that bastard to hell on an expedited conveyance. And, since you don't need that shotgun you were holding, please send it to me. I will gladly use it and enjoy the recoil and muzzle flash.

I would get a 12 gauge strictly due to ammo availability. I can always load a 12 lighter like a 20 and I'll probably be able to find the ammo I'm looking for. Plus I can load it with 3in 15 pellet 00buck at the range.
@@ryanespinoza7297 ya I like the 20 less recoil and less flash. Extended tube Remington 1100 is great gives u 3 Xtra rounds and flollow is super quick. I use the same gun for pushing deer kinda duel purpose gun and I know it works when I need it. 12 is always there for backup if I need it.
@@ryanespinoza7297 I dunno if you were paying attention during the last ammo crunch we literally just had, but I couldn't find 12 gauge anything on shelves or online. Though to be fair during that period I also could not find 20 GA either. I think the only thing I could reliably find was 40 S&W, and even that became rare as hen's teeth for a good while. So I guess what I'm saying is, pick your weapon(s), learn your weapon, and stack ammo *deep.* A gun with no bullets is just a club in disguise.
@@cavalieroutdoors6036 I dunno if you are paying attention right now but I see all kinds of 12 GA buck and bird shot all over shelves now and maybe one choice of 20 GA. So making a decision on buying a gun now, I would choose what is widely available. You also must've not looked very hard for 12 GA, I found plenty of remington 00buck 15 pellet online for under a dollar a shot which was better than what I found in sporting stores in 2019. The best home defense firearm is the one closest to you.
As with so many of these topics (wrong tool, right too, this sucks for that, etc) - it all depends on your own personal circumstances - comfort level and ability with the firearm, pump, semi, ammunition, living arrangement, where, with whom, proximity of neighbors, etc, etc…
Regardless of the firearm, training is key and critical - admittedly probably more so with the shotgun (for reloading, understanding what kind of shot to use by situation, etc)

Have you tried cocking it and then yelling I’ve just cocked my shotgun? It might instill some fear. Spread depends on choke and length of barrel. A shotgun is less likely to go through your walls and your neighbors walls if you miss. Imagine killing a little kid in their bed because you felt threatened so you fired a few 10mm or 45 caliber. Try explaining it to the parents or a judge. You wont feel the recoil until it’s all over. If you can’t hit a target with 5 rounds in a shotgun you shouldn’t use any firearm at all because you are a danger to everyone in the house and your neighbors.
Exactly. Use what you are proficient with and if you can't get to that weapon than it's first come first serve. 🤣 that being said. We have entered an Era of options and there's usually something to fulfill everyone's different needs.
There isn't a person in existence whose eardrums would survive firing a shotgun in the house without some kind of hearing protection. I have hearing damage from firing guns in the military 40+ years ago.
I disagree for one primary reason: the shotgun is the most devastating weapon within home engagement distances the average citizen can own. If someone has risen to the level of a threat that needs lethal force, I want to minimize the chance of a failure to stop.
As for the reasons listed for not choosing a shotgun:
Recoil - a quality pump shotgun is still incredibly cheap. So much so that you can easily buy the shotgun and a thousand rounds of cheap Walmart special birdshot to train with for the cost of most “average” AR-15s.
Capacity - the devastation of a shotgun usually makes it a one shot stop (assuming you do your part). The average “combat” or “tactical” shotgun is a six or seven bad guy gun.
Muzzle Flash - if you intend to use a shotgun (or any weapon) as a home defense tool, it needs a white light. You cannot in good conscience (or legally) justify shooting something you cannot identify. If you are illuminating the target to ID it then subsequently shoot your shotgun, muzzle flash becomes irrelevant.
Capacity is a non issue for most home defense situations! If you need more than 8 shots with a shotgun you have a much bigger issue on your hands.
The Recoil of a shotgun is a bonus not a negative the Recoil reminds you that you are still alive

I have heard all these theories. Easier to hit a target with a 3 inch shot pattern than a 9mm one. I'm a decent shot with a shotgun or long gun. Not too good with a pistol, especially when shaking.
Not to mention the adrenaline. Most would be lucky to make one of those three shots under stress without training.
Thank you...! my missus had an issue a long time ago, couldn't find her revolver, and could barely load a .22 lever action because her hands were shaking so bad...the bad guy eventually went away and got picked up, but she has never forgotten the lessons...
@@anthonyjimenez9725 This is why if you decide to get a firearm for defense sake it's paramount to include not only physical training, but taking it upon yourself to read lots of great literature on the subject. I always thought it was so irresponsible for the people that would purchase a firearm for home defense sake, put it in the corner or in a drawer and then pray to never have to use it. You would be amazed how that's the vast majority of gun owners.

I won't buy a whole new shotgun or sacrifice reliability for mini shells when 2.75" shells have worked and allowed many threats to win the room temperature challenge.
@@toddk1377 i agree. I use fill size double ought buck in my home defense Shotgun. I'm just saying if someone is overly concerned about recoil and overpenetration, minishells are a decent solution. The best solution to overpenetration is having good aim!
One thing you missed is the penetration problems in 9mm and 5.56 (the two other most common choices for home defense) if you live in an apartment complex then a 20 gauge with #4 buck or even #1 birdshot is the best compromise. I guess you could use frangible 9mm ammo but I've been using shotguns since I was 8 years old and even though I'm 140 lbs the recoil is nothing, ive even shot my bantam/youth 20 and 12 gauges with one hand for kicks.
As a shotgun owner I definitely agree with you that there are better options for home defense. But as a resident of the peoples republic of New York, I’m extremely limited in what I can own unless I’m willing to shell out over $2k to get a featureless rifle thanks to the SAFE Act. Smh. Can’t wait til my kids graduate from high school so we can get the heck out of dodge!

Copper you're a good dude and I like your vids, but once in while things you say really make me wonder about your experience with certain loads, such as birdshot not being effective at close ranges. get the smallest gauge shotgun i can think of, a 410, load it with the smallest shot you can find, have someone volunteer to take a blast in the chest at 21-30 feet then tell us again how ineffective it is.

Yeah, when he said that, I literally laughed out loud. Some of these TH-cam guys have some wild scenarios built up in their head and some just check reality at the door.
I’m a big advocate for the shotgun, BUT I think it takes more time training and practice on one than say a carbine or even a pistol in a lot of cases.
So why not just use a pistol??
@@davehart7943 Not against using a pistol. But a pistol has way less power than a rifle or shotgun. Hence why you see many cases where people are shot multiple times with a pistol and they keep on going.
@@nobodyspecial1852 Exactly, also knowing exactly what your load is going to do at what range. Your 00 buck shot is very different at 5 yards than it is 25 yards. When do you swap from buck to slug, and a lot of those loads will over penetrate hardcore to. I love shotguns but I truly believe they are a expert weapon
@@nobodyspecial1852 good buckshot can be pretty consistent. I prefer the federal stuff, especially the flight control stuff but it’s hard to find. Now if you go and have the shotgun barrel tricked out by someone like Vang Comp that will make your shotgun do amazing. Changes the game for it. That’s in my future for a 870 or 500. Haven’t decided yet

Agree. I think alot of these youtubers do not live in a small apartment. Max range in my place is maybe 10ft? But I have neighbors on all sides except 1. Over penetration is a real concern, they are families with kids. I have to be sure of my target and beyond.
The biggest problem with a shotgun for home defense is the cleaning bill.
Personal experience contradicts you about the sound of a 12 g racking chasing off home invaders at 2:00 AM. 3 of them, one rack since I keep my weapon cruiser ready, and one "oh sh*t" fading back into my yard resolved the problem. I believe in a layered approach to home defense and my Mossberg 500 is part of it.
Edit for clarification: there were three intruders, and we were in a very bad neighborhood. This was not a bluff, just a very desirable outcome.
It's a valid point to consider though. While in *your* anecdote the sound was enough to make the person turn tail and run there are ment anecdotes where that does *not* happen. While the sound might make a normal person who isn't high decide they value their lives more than your property, it might not register to a meth head that their forever off switch is about to get hit. So you also need the resolve to *use* the gun and not just rely on the sound of the action.
I'd keep it loaded just incase whoever breaks into your house is looking for a fight
@@DLI002 cruiser ready is the state where the magazine is full, the chamber is empty, and the slide release has been engaged so the weapon can be pumped as soon as it is picked up. I choose not to keep my shotgun loaded with a round in the chamber because shotguns like mine are not drop safe. The gun was loaded and I would have taken whatever actions were necessary to defend my family. As I said originally I regard the home invaders choosing to leaves as a highly desirable outcome.

I'm going to have to disagree with this one, it's an amazing home defence option as long as you learn to handle it, as you should with ANY home defense weapon. It might not be a great choice for the 92 year old lady who can barely lift it but it's one of the best home defence options out there.
I have read a lot of comments on this video.
The problem with a weapon that shoots a single round, is that if you miss your target.
That round is more likely too penetrate more than one wall. Unlike buck shot or smaller shot. Once you pull the trigger it doesn’t matter what you are using. You are responsible for that round down range.
For me. I’ll use my 12 gauge 1st. Then pick up my pistols.
But the most important aspect of home defense and weapons. Is training and have other self defense barriers set in place so you don’t have too use deadly force.

A good 12 gauge shotgun is a fantastic home defense firearm.
This is one of those things where gun owners get too polarized. I’ve heard passionate people on both sides of this debate. I have two rifles and two shotguns for home defense.
Rifle caliber SBR’s suck for home defense too. They’re insanely loud and have high muzzle flash. It will deafen and blind you far worse than a pistol or 16” barrel will. Pistol caliber carbine/SBR might be the all around best choice actually 🤔
I agree shortest 556 I would go is a 13.7 inch. 8 inch 9mm PDWS make great room to room defense.
Suppressed SBR are not that bad but tho! However, I agree, Pcc are better for home Defense
I have no issue whatever is in reach, but I won't hesitate to use whatever due to flash, sound, or length. If it launches a projectile(s) into the vitals to stop a threat, that's what I care about. Besides, if flash is a worry and losing night vision, keep the non aiming eye closed while firing, you still have night vision, the military has taught this for decades. When it comes to sounds, that's not an issue when the adrenaline is through the roof.
@@toddk1377 auditory exclusion is real… but hearing damage will still occur when shooting a 5.56 out of a 10.5” barrel with a comp…. Out of 16” 556 or handgun in 9m is not THAT bad in doors…. Hopefully adrenaline kicks in so that the defender can benefit from fight or flight characteristics such as auditory exclusion.

True. While a suppressed weapon with subsonics is safest on our hearing for indoor shooting, I don't have a PCC, so if hearing damage is the side affect, I'll take it over a gun shot wound, being butt raped, or something like that happening to my family. That's a decision I can live with.
I disagree 100%. Who am I?- I’m a guy who has had to protect my family and I reached PAST my PCC and my pistols, grabbed the shotgun, and dispatched 3 bad guys. ‘Nuff said.

If you ever had to fire a shotgun indoors inside a small area, your hearing goes out the window forever. This happened to me. Now I have severe tinnitus and need to wear hearing aids too. A shotgun is not the best option for home self defense for many many reasons.
I'm sure there's more to it than that. Rifles are louder than shotguns and I've purposely shot both in my basement just to see how bad it was and I'm not deaf or have tinnitus, plus I've been to numerous rock concerts, drive a deuce and a half with no ear pro for years, and according to my last hearing test, I'm just below average on my left and at average on my right.
Yes, the hearing risk. Tell the invaders to wait until you cap your ears, or wear your hearing protection while sleeping.
I was honestly waiting for you to say something about the recoil. I see WAY to many people buy a shotgun but never shoot it or shoot it for the first time and say it has too much power. Keep your legs and feet to a slight bend, that stock locked to your shoulder and a good firm grip. Not to forget LOTS ANS LOTS of practice
also, if the time comes where you're shooting someone with it, you won't even feel the recoil or hear the blast. your adrenaline will be so high that you likely won't even notice if you've been shot.

Disagree with this one. I keep a shotgun by the bed loaded with 3 inch #4 Steel Turkey Shot. Whomever is hit with that is in a world of sh*t.
Instead of racking my shotgun to scare an intruder I'd rather cock the hammer on my Glock like they do in the movies 😆 Great video my man 👍🏻

I enjoyed your video and think you made some valid points concerning the novice gun owner. From that perspective, a novice may struggle with any platform. There are, however, some of us that cut our teeth on shotguns and rely on them without hesitation. What I think (my opinion!) is the most important aspect of defending one’s home is to become confident and proficient with whatever platform is preferred.

Your OPINION is that shotguns are terrible for home defense. The reality is that they can be a fantastic option for home defense.
If you bury a shotgun for home defense based on the myths yes it sucks for home defense . If you get a good quality shotgun and train with it, it is a very effective home defense weapon, the only limitation is ammo capacity. I have a 1301 tactical for a primary home defense weapon and completly trust it and my ability to use it for home defense

Why shotguns suck for people who have never shot a gun of any kind.
For a first choice I would agree for elderly/smaller people a standard 16" AR would be a good choice. A pistol is IMO not a good choice for a first time shooter either. Much harder to shoot than a long gun, going to likely take multiple shots on target to stop the threat too. Long guns are easier to point shoot, and #1 buckshot is one of the highest 1 shot man stoppers we can get. That said it ALL comes down to training. If you don't train with a pistol or a long gun both aren't going to do you any favors.
I think the ar specially in 5.56 or .223 is a terrible defense gun it takes to long for the rounds bleed out design to effect a close quarter defensive engagement. For elderly or smaller frame people 410 or 20 ga is a much better option
@@steamman9193 223 while small is still a rifle cartridge and inside of 100 yards is going to cause severe damage. It's low recoil is going to allow weaker people more shots on target, more quickly and more accurately. A 20 gauge is still a handful for lighter females and I've shot lightweight 20 gauges that recoiled just as bad as a 12 gauge. I would choose 223 over 410 in a heartbeat.
I personally chose 45ACP for home defense, close range, expand on impact, ez to move around corners. However, the best is to have lots of lights around your house plus a dog. Lights and dog are your early warning systems, don't wait until your house was broken in. Whatever tool(s) you choose, best to practice with them to know how they work and manipulation.

I feel like so many people don't even mention man's best friend! It's litteraly the next best thing after a competent alarm system. I've actually trained enough in low light to really admire the advantage of a high lumen/candela ar/pistol mounted light. By low light, I never mean pitch black but very low / yellow light through hallways and main living areas once it's after bed time. Getting hit by super high, white light from a pitch black room the bleeds out into the yellow hallway / main room is like getting hit by a flash bang without the noise. I'm sure this sounds overkill at this point but I've tested all barricade points of the house as if I was the intruder and when trying to navigate through the house then getting hit by that light actually hurts to the point where you naturally look away. It's crazy how you can make such a little light turn into another advantage.

Yesterday, I was reminded that an ox goad, considered an inferior agricultural tool, was once used to great effect in an ancient skirmish. I don’t necessarily like to subscribe or to or bank on statistics and percentages in self defense, but rather people to effectively utilize whatever tools they have at hand. A shotgun is like any other firearm. It takes training to use successfully, but that goes for anything.
As a former USMC guy, police officer and federal agent retired this fellow is wrong. Shotguns are a first choice and a 20 ga youth model shotgun with 18" bbl is a solid choice.
I have been practicing with the shotgun quite a bit recently and it is my first choice home defense because I have seen what I can do with it boar hunting. Maybe not a good first time gun owner choice, but neither are most handguns. A PCC or SBR is way better for a beginner.
BTW barrel length effecting shot spread is a myth too. It changes velocity, but the choke and ammo choice changes spread.

Your idea about barrel length is totally untrue. While the difference between a 20" and a 28" might not be much, it is measurable. You're right about chokes contributing more, but once you start getting really short you get more spread, and if you fire shot from a rifled barrel you get a ton of spread.

I get this from running more than 200 patterns over the past 6 months looking for good loads and verifying how they perform with different barrels and chokes. The variation from one shot to the next is more than you see between 28" and 18".
Shorter shotguns don't actually lose much velocity at all compared to say rifles and pistols. Going from a 28" hunting shotgun to a 14" SBS you're talking about 100fps or so. Not enough for the bad guy to notice.
I've trained more with the 12-Gauge shotgun than I have the AR-15...so I'm going to use whatever is comfortable and easy for me to use...So, I've decided to use the Mossberg Retrograde 12-Gauge with #1 or # 4 buckshot for my Home defense purposes
the flash blinding you is a moot point. you shouldn't be firing in the dark. you should have a bright light mounted on the rifle sufficient enough to clearly identify targets and weapons. also, if I'm clearing my house, I'm not doing it in the dark, I'm going to be turning lights on as I go.
I agree with all the myth busting you did. And while my shotgun isn't my #1 go to firearm for HD, I have no problem grabbing it if need be.
Now my shotgun isn't the traditional configuration as I have a Kel-Tec KSG, but with Aguila mini shells I can get about 20 something shells loaded up.
That takes care of capacity for me, but I agree with you that generally shotguns are slow to load. That's more of my fortify the castle gun where as I'd grab one of my handguns or ARs out of convenience and instinct.

The Aguila's are fantastic. One of these days I'll get around to buying the adapter for my 20" 88, pretty sure the tube will hold 15 or so.

I see two benefits. One is that they are safest through walls. So if you have 4 or 5 kids in the house, definitely a consideration. Other is that training can be more available through skeet and trap activities.
I would not make that assumption about shotguns and walls. Most walls are just drywall. Studs might* stop some pellets, they won't stop them all. I'd wager a SG round would be stopped by brick exterior walls, but you still better be damn sure there's nothing on the otherside of drywall you don't want destroyed. Because it probably will be.
Do you really think you will be able to swing a shotgun inside of a house, like you do when you shoot skeet and trap?
@@boom-rl7me you don't need to, the best tactic for home defense is to hole up in a room not to play Tactical Timmy and try to hunt the invader down. And if you *did* choose the second route...it's a long gun. Use it like one. Tip to butt my shotgun is maybe 2 inches longer than my AR-15. In simple terms, not enough sifference to make a difference with respect to maneuvering around the house.

Depends, most bedrooms are 10x10 or bigger, most living areas are 15x15 or bigger. You only need four feet to swing a long gun around. My shotty is the same length as my M16 clone, and if one is using a "firearm" such as a shockwave with a pistol brace, shorter yet.

In skilled hands a shotgun is usually deadly 95% of the time within 25 yards.
Defense is primarily about mindset. Training adds to that mindset, but mindset is key. What are you willing to do to defend yourself or others? What is the best weapon and tactics, given your setting and skill? Set your mind to task and train according to your need.
While you do make some great points. A shotgun's stoping power is hard to beat. If you have a dedicated shotgun for home defense then you will likely have five rounds without one being in the chamber. If weight or recoil is an issue go with a 20 Gauge or even a .410 with defensive rounds. Training is probably the biggest issue to overcome. Since most people won't be taking a shotgun to the range very often or at all. But most people do have a general idea of shouldering and pointing a long gun, so a lot of practice is learning to operate the pump action, safety, and loading and unloading the shotgun safely. I think with a little practice and training a shotgun is still a viable option.
I prefer full length tubes. Gives me seven or more shells in the magazine.
A shotgun may not be the best choice for home defense. However it’s nice to have one in the arsenal. There are a lot of different options for shells . I prefer 00 buck for home defense.
I hate having to carry a Shotgun while I'm Vacuuming my home, a handgun never leaves my side.

For home defense at up to 15 yards the shotgun has the best single trigger pull threat stop results. However, it does require recoil tolerance, training and the correct loads. If you use a shotgun for any other activities, a shotgun for home defense would be a natural choice.
A pistol caliber carbine with a shake awake red dot sight and defensive loads has the shortest learning curve to effective results…“ put dot on target then pull trigger until target drops”.
That said, the six to ten inch barrel PCC with an arm brace looks pretty good these days.
Where is Clint Smith when you need him lol. I get the fact that shotguns are heavy and recoil like crazy. However, they are the only firearm that can launch nine 10mm BB's at once at an invader and guarantee to knock him down whether they are wearing bulletproof vests or not. That person is going to feel something and they aren't going to get back up real quick. Not only that. A Tavor TS-12 can carry 15 rounds of 00 buck and is semi. So multiple invaders can be handled.
The big problem with semi auto shotguns is that’s assuming they run reliably. Most of the mag based ones do not tend to run very well, whereas tube based ones do tend to work pretty well
@@ThrashTillDeth85 I live in California so detachable magazine based or detachable tube based shotguns are illegal. So it really only leaves the TS-12 as the only semi auto, multi tube shotgun available. Magazine based shotguns are not home defense ready. The magazines bring too many variables that can go wrong. In the end though it comes down to training. If a person does not train with their shotgun, than they will not know what to do when the time comes too use it, and it jams on them.

I'm not sure if I'm understanding you correctly...how are mag tube shotguns not HD ready? Is this in reference to 5 shot capacity or all of them? From my experience with handling shotguns and shooting numerous types and gauges for 25+ years, I have yet to come across a 100% reliable semi auto shotgun and out of the big 2 pump actions, the 870 and the 500/590, I have yet find one that is more reliable.

1972, Lynn, MA and there was a late night knock at the door. My Mother had me retrieve the shotgun, a bolt action hunting gun, from the closet near the door and rack the action, as I was the most familiar and comfortable with the weapon. Burglars are generally cowardly criminals and are, statistically speaking, not going to be armed.
All we heard was the pitter patter of highly motivated footsteps running down the hall outside our apartment.
In the Mossberg 590, sitting next to the bed, cruiser ready, is one round of bird shot followed by 5 rounds of OO Buck and 2 slugs. I know the stress factor is going be very high for that first round, so the extra .5 inches in the spread might be useful.
I am also not afraid of breaking my Mossberg so I won't be as gentle as you were in racking that first round.
Yes, a shotgun requires training, but I certainly hope you are not espousing that a new Glock or AR-15 owner doesn't have to train on those weapons systems!

There's a lot more choices out there when it come to shotguns: there are magazine fed shotguns, semiautomatic shotguns, shotguns that are smaller and easier to handle. The list go on and on.
Nobody in there right mind will engage a person firing a semiautomatic shotguns that's magazine fed, if they do they will have taken the room temperature challenge.

I think the Kel Tec KSG shotgun is perfect for home defense because it hold alot of ammo and its compact.
Gun people always knock bird shot at 15 to 20 ft. They think that the pellets will bounce off the intruder like he's superman. All I can say is would YOU want to stand in front of a 12ga with #8 shot and get hit. Also any gun one has and is familiar with will work.
I would disagree. A shotguns main advantage is that it will physically push a large angry man back. Other bullets may have better ballistics but that doesn’t necessarily mean the force or trauma is equal which could be critical at close range
I have to disagree here. I have a mossberg that i am very very comfortable with and ive practiced with it for over a decade. I rely on my shotgun for home deffense and i feel pretty good about it. 7 shots of 12ga plus the 5 shells on the side saddle are more than id need for a basic home deffense situation. Ive got lots of ambient light in the house too so flash wont be an issue. 1 round center mass of any round from a 12ga in home distances is enough to drop anyone.
Bird shot is probably the best option for self defense. It has the widest dispersal pattern and the least collateral damage. 00 buck or slugs will go through your walls and cause a lot of property damage and potentially hurt a fam member. If you are hit by birdshot you are still dead 95% of the time…
Try 04 buck. It has true stopping power and doesn't have the distance as much.
And it doesn't penetrate walls which is a plus.
All good points . But where I live out in the country, i do keep one beside the door with buckshot and a couple of slugs as I never know what thret to expect . Could be a Coyote or a bear or a bear after the lifestock or a tweeker after anything or anyone.

Also it really doesn't take that much training to operate a pump reliably. I've seen 12 year olds learn to shoot skeet effectively in less than an hour.
Are there simpler options? Sure. Since Benelli's inertia patent ran out there a slew of reliable semi autos out there.
Also there's the licensing aspect, in most places, you can still buy a shotgun without any additional license, whereas for a handgun, there are all sorts of hoops.
Remember: a shotgun is NOT a firearm, it's a sporting utensil/farm implement.
This is contrary to everything I'm reading on the subject. My concern is a handgun (even when you hit the target multiple times) will not always stop the intruder. I watched this on TH-cam! I think the biggest advantage a shot gun has over a hand gun is stopping power.
A simple revolver is more tactical and does the trick. I seen people grab a shotgun and tussle but never a revolver
If you live by the wisdom of "train for the most likely scenario," a shotgun is a magnificent defensive weapon.
That's why I have an AR in 2 closets, I hate shooting slugs or buck shot because after half of a box I can't shoot anymore.
I will add one comment... Birdshot can be a very effective man stopper at 5-7 yards. I caught the edge of a pattern of 12 gauge 7½ shot in my left knee while rabbit hunting in my teens. Believe me, at short ranges, birdshot is very effective - and painful!

The dp-12 is a pretty good shotgun to use. Mine holds 16 yes it a little heavy but that adrenaline will be running you won’t even notice. No ejection problems ever.

Shotguns don't over penatrate when using like 4 shot but your going to do damage. The sound of racking a shotgun is fickle I admit, it also leaves you with one less shotshell.

So I actually have a few firearms staged around my house. Mossberg 500A behind my Bedroom Door, a Mini-14 by my nightstand, and a .38 on my nightstand. Walther P22 in my bathroom Magazine rack, Rock Island GIC 1911 stashed in my couches fold down compartment. That being said, the Mossberg would probably be the first gun i would grab in case of an emergency just because i have owned the gun for a decade, shot it to the point of the action running like greased ball bearings, and just being the most uses to shooting it. Second would probably be the Mini-14 and the .38 special stashed in my pocket. That is just my opinion though and what works for me definefly won't work for everyone

Disagree ; If recoil is a problem use a 20 ga or 410' A 410 at close range is still devastating. A shotgun is easier to train with and more versatile than any pistol . Personal choice is a short barrel 12 with #2 goose shot ..

You haven't said that the sound produced, in a room, it deafens you momentarily, so much so that it even makes you dizzy, which doesn't happen to your attacker, who will therefore have an advantage over you.
Another thing to say is that it is uncomfortable in small spaces like a house.
I was going along with what you were saying until you spoke of muzzle flash. I'v hunted garments at night with a shotgun and once as a deputy sheriff I shot a felon at night with a shotgun, no muzzle flash was seen.
If a shotgun is all you have it's the only choice you have. So one needs to train with it

None of these reasons make a shotgun a terrible choice for home defense. I have fired everything from BB guns to MK-19s and given the choice in a home defense situation I chose the 12GA. The reloading bit may be the worst offender for me. If I toss out 5-8 12GA rounds (depending on weapon & if one is racked to start) and the person either isn't hit or is still coming at me I am the victim of a mob hit, not a home invasion.
I %100 agree that you need to train and practice with your weapon system. But I will argue that one advantage that a shotgun has over a pistol or a rifle like an AR15 is the payload that gets sent down range. Another advantage is you can select specific ammo for your situation, like #4 buckshot or less lethal shot shells. Another advantage that ties into the last one is by choosing your ammo, you can really decrease the chances of over penetration. My final advantage is it’s a heck of a lot more powerful than a pistol, even with #4 buck shot. For me, I’m kinda stuck with a shotgun because of where I live, suburbs is kind of hard to crank off a round out of my AR and not have over penetration. Also, one other thing to add, if you’re searching for someone in a dark room. You need a light on your weapon, there’s absolutely no excuse why you can’t have one in this day and age. Last thing to add to that situation, if you’re searching for a person in a dark room or at night, find the light switch. It frees up you having to use you mounted light and you can see outside that beam from the light. Like the video
