I mean my security system stops threats. That phone call really scares away the bad guy. They see that sloman shield and piss their pants.
Semi auto shotgun is my choice. So much flying in their direction they don't have time to turn and assess what's happening. And in litigation I emptied so fast (~ 2s) that they never got that chance to run away. From there it's sidearm if they have any fight left in them while I wait for the police.
If 6 loud shots doesn't scare anyone else looking to do harm away, I don't know what would.
Over penetration is not even a factor. Most home defense situations are at night and if your like me you sleep upstairs, which means you're likely firing down wards. If they are on the same floor it's parallel and projectiles would be tumbling after hitting anything then traveling extended distances. The test you never see is ballistic gel getting hit, then 5ft away hitting drywall, then 2 inches drywall, then 10 ft away another piece of drywall. Simulating actual rooms in houses. Instead you see people stack drywall close and go, "see it penetrated 8 layers.". That's not how it works, gravity, inertia , friction and trajectory are all forces that play a role in real life. Something that should be considered...
On the ar15, 30 rounds will only get you in trouble in court. I work in legal for a us top 10 insurance company. As soon as their back turns and are scared you need to stop firing, very easy to get carried away with 30 rounds. If the zombies come though, my ar15 will be in my safe waiting.

While I cannot dispute the logic here, I settled on a Glock 23, with a tactical light/green laser, and a spare mag attached to the first via lanyard, rather than using an AR. I made this choice for the following reasons:
    1. Smaller and easier to handle in my small home, with narrow doors, and hallway.
    2. Easier storage/accessibility. I decided that moving a long gun in/out of the safe each time I leave/enter the house would be cumbersome, and would result in my either not storing it properly when I left, or failing to pull it out of the safe when getting home. Where as the smaller pistol safe is much more accessible, and I just swap mags and carry it out of the house. Also, the long gun is more difficult to carry/store near me as I walk about the house.
The above challenges made me conclude that I simply would not have the long gun within reach should I ever need it, and would be far more likely to actually have the pistol ready and available. And when you get down to it, the best gun, is the one that you actually have when you need it.

Lights play a huge factor in this. I've had to clear my house 3 times in life so far, thankfully nothing was ever threatening.. That said, a pistol with a light is my choice over my AR or 12g because opening doors, turning corners and such is much easier with a handgun close to the body than any long gun with the end of the barrel extended from the torso. I'm also trained with the 3, still handgun wins every time for me. The home makes a difference as well of what to choose in the bump of the night scenario. If I'm clearing a house, handgun. If I'm holding my ground with my family, AR all day. Just my .2 not that y'all even care but it's what I am more confident with.

Wife and I have a hand gun concealed somewhere in every single room. Including shotguns and AR-15s.. Total of about 20 firearms in our house... Of course there is 5 bedrooms, three bathrooms and Two floors... SO it only makes sense to have a fair number of home defense firearms hidden in different locations. You never know when wild animal or crazy asshole will invade your home. You might not be in a certain room when it happens, so best to have options.

    • @ylismsa
      @ylismsa 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

You better hope the invader doesn't find any of your 20 firearms. It would most certainly suck to find your own gun pointed at you. Especially if the invader came in unarmed.

Ylisami ... Good luck finding, let alone getting too them. You need to know how to open and what to do to open the containers. OH and good luck getting in... I installed Polycarbonate windows and entrance ways are reinforced from kick ins. It would take a vehicle mounted battering ram to quickly get through the doors, and windows. We also live in a gated community that is patrolled regularly by security guards. There is also a surveillance system tied to an off site security response center that operates 24/7. SO thanks for the concern, but I am pretty sure I have my avenues of weakness covered.

Guess you don’t have kids... for those of us that do, that setup would be negligent. I hear you tho, I have 2 kids (11 and 13), both proficient with firearms, but i do have weapons hidden in a few places, but nowhere my kids know about, can reach, or will find. We all need to think responsibly where you place a firearm, and who also might have access.

    • @JJ_ExMachina
      @JJ_ExMachina 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

@@ericpinnar... I personally have been shooting firearms since I was able to hold one. At 2 or 3 I learned to use a high powered Air rifle to prevent squirrels and rabbits and other vermin from distryoing the crops. Once I was able to hold the weight I was shooting small caliber gunpowder rifles. So as far back as I can remember I have been around firearms... I knew as a child not to play with them, and not to point them at anything you didn't intend to kill. So no with proper training it is NOT nelegent to have firearms in the house... Hell as a child the long rifles hung on the walls in plain sight. Handguns were put up by only so a stranger did not know where they were. I knew and had the training which included the respect for the dangers of such firearms. My children have the same training and discipline as I did as a child.

I disagree. Shotguns have high recoil making them unsuitable for people with small frames. They also have a decent learning curve that requires training to be able to reload quickly and not induce malfunctions under stress. I cant tell you how many time I have been out shooting sporting clays and the other guys there proclaim their trusty 870 to be their go to home defense gun while I watch them fumble around reloading it and short shuck it all day long. If thats how well they run it recreationally I can only imagine how fucked they are if they need to run it during an adrenaline dump. IMHO Get an AR and if you can a suppressor. Less recoil, higher capacity, faster reloads, faster to remedy most malfunctions should you have one, faster follow up shots. Only downside over a shotgun IMHO is the louder noise which is mediated away with a supressor. If you cant get a suppressor keep a set of electronic muffs (with fresh batteries) wrapped around the stock.

    • @brentpoole6114
      @brentpoole6114 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Agreed, Lonewolf, but a lot of the problem with shotguns comes from what the "traditional" choice for a shotgun is. 12 gauge pump is by far the most common. Buuuuut: consider (for home defense) a 20 gauge gas powered autoloader.
      - Plenty of power to stop a threat. Each pellet is traveling at the same speed as from a 12 gauge, there are just fewer of them. Each trigger pull of a 20 gauge is (roughly) equal to two trigger pulls of a .44 magnum or three from a .45 acp. Yes that's less powerful than a 12 gauge, but still plenty to get the job done.
      - Much easier to handle the recoil for a smaller shooter. There's much less kick to start with, plus the gas system eats up some of the recoil, plus the smaller frame means it's likely to fit my wife's body better so she can position it correctly to handle the recoil.
      - No short stroking problems. Pull the trigger and it fires, just like a pistol or an AR. People sometimes think of automating shotguns as unreliable, but I really don't think that's true. A pump can be abused, never cleaned, and still fire every time - except for user error under stress. But, if you keep a modern autoloader cleaned and lubed - the same as you would with a pistol - it has the same reliability as a pistol.
I also agree with your implied statement that training is important.
      Thoughts? Anything I'm overlooking?

Brent Poole I like the traditional stock. if you are asking this question you don't have a full auto ar, so realistically the semiautomatic shotgun has the same rate of fire, but the traditional stock is much more instinctive to use in hand to hand, even in close quarters. did you just grab my barrel and push it away? some part of that force is now part of the force propelling the stock towards your face, thanks! if you stepped back I can follow through, or try to use the extra space to bring my gun to bear as the adrenaline allows. also though I would choose semi auto for my family member, I have killed enough people, and I am willing to risk my life so that the action of my shotgun can wordlessly tell someone to run, even if it only helps me to deal with taking another life...
also, odd side note, in my limited experience, and may no one ever have this experience again, untrained people having to clear buildings did better with shotguns... actually because they wasted less amo they even did better than with captured full autos.... this is purely anecdotal, I hope that no one will ever have enough occasion to properly study if or why.

If you are surprised by an intruder that is close enough to grab you or the gun, which I think is a realistic possibility in a home intruder scenario, it's probably easier to fight hand-to-hand and fire a pistol than it would be with a long gun.

I agree either AR-15 or AK-74 for a newer shooter.
I think Pistols are good for experienced shooters, very maneuverable easy storage, good defensive ammo selection, easy to keep on you. You can go heavier on the weight of the pistol and move up to 40SW or 45ACP for larger expansion and better stopping power too.
12 gauge shotguns have awesome effectiveness, I would take the AR or AK for accuracy though. I was getting less than 1" groups with my AR from 50 yards the first time I shot one. They are super easy to shoot accurately.

I came to the same conclusion as this video. From my military experience and also 25 years of firearm experience in general, I came to the conclusion that a 5.56mm short carbine with 5.56mm soft-point ammunition is overall the best home defense firearm as long as it's well-maintained. You get lots of ammo, low recoil, ease of keeping sights on target, and minimum over-penetration but with much greater stopping power compared to most hand gun ammunition. You can also just pump tons of rounds on a target in order to maintain fire superiority, which in the military, you learn is critical when it comes to surviving ambushes.
For me however, as a former Army Corp of Engineers guy, I have a certain affinity to 12 gauge shotguns and so I train much more with my Maverick 88 because it's fun to shoot and I'm able to put rounds on target under stress very quickly even though I'm a short guy. It's just about having an aggressive forward leaning stance and learning to both enjoy and use the recoil to your advantage in terms of pumping the next rounds into the chamber and keeping sights on target. But as I get older I'll likely transition more to 20 gauge, then to .410 bore and 5.56mm carbines as primary home defense firearms. I also love 7.62x39 but having seen what it does to homes in a drive-by shooting, even with soft-point rounds, the over-penetration is insane. For home defense you want to stick to lighter caliber soft point rounds in rifles. Leave the heavy caliber stuff for hunting and long-range shooting. Likewise in a 12 gauge shotgun, I stick to #4 buckshot because it gives the best compromise between minimum over-penetration and lethality (verified by FBI testing as well).

I started off with a Mossberg 500 12 ga because I wanted the intruder to disintegrate.
Then I progressed to a S&W 9mm for the capacity so I could stop most of the mob.

I’m going to have to stick with the old shotgun. I know the “spread” is not as dramatic as people want to believe. But it’s still a thing. Especially when compared to the .22 caliber bullet from an AR or a 9mm pistol. Even a .410 shotgun is going to be more effective. And I know they’re heavy and kick like being in a head on crash with a Mack truck. Especially with magnum shells and slugs. But that’s also a lot of the reason they’re so effective. They got the “POWUH”!!! And much like John says... they also have the loudest bark. So you will probably have the police on your way from the help of your neighbors...
As far as ease of use and capacity... they have AR weapons chambered in virtually all popular shotgun gauges. .410, 20 and 12. So you have the advantage of being semi auto, reduced recoil compared to a standard shotgun. As well as being mag fed so your capacity is really only limited to your physical strength to be able to hold a 20 round drum on target. Because it’s heavy for real. And as a bonus with an AR based shotgun. Your controls are virtually the same as your favorite rifle.
But the most important thing for me is stopping power. And a shotgun is as close to one shot guaranteed stop as possible. And in my opinion... That’s even with just a .410. And most people would have at least a 20 gauge if not a 12 gauge.

I keep all 3 close by but i agree 👍 the pistol Ar15 is alot easyier to clear a building than a longer one. Coarse when i was in the Army we used regular m16 for this.
There's techniques for pistol clearing and using non firing hand. But my mindset is a pistol is used long enough to get you to your long gun.
I have a saiga 12ga shotgun with 10rd mags i like and with its folding stock make is small enough. But im 6'4" 330 pounds so recoil isn't much of an issue nor is weight within reasonable limits. Not going to try to use a m 240. Lol

Depends: For home defense against a single or a couple of home invaders, recoil management and multiple shots become less important. Single trigger pull stop becomes so much more important. Shotgun wins hands down. Against a horde of invaders, the AR obviously wins. Not so cut and dry. I personally have both next to my nightstand. The L4 plate carrier has the AR mags in it, because if it comes to that the AR is the one to grab. But for bump in the night, single to 3 creepers, I would pick the 930 12G every time.

  • @danielsterling4918

On a side note for home invasion protection, I'm a young man who's been working as a carpenter and glazier (glass tradesman) in Florida for years, and I've always insisted on putting longer screws in the door frames, hinge side and jamb side, ideally at least two 3 inch screws in each hinge and whatnot. It's also (most often) mandatory to replace windows, doors and sliders with impact resistant (hurricane resistant) glass and other materials here in FL depending on how many openings you're replacing.
I've also sold a handful of jobs on the principle that it's useful as protection from home invasion. We have a video of myself and 3 or 4 other tradesmen beating a sliding glass door panel with a sledge hammer all over for about 20 minutes and we still couldn't get through it. They're made so well that some of the fire and police departments have protested against their use as it makes it extremely hard to forcibly enter a household. The firefighters have to use what's basically a chainsaw to make entry.
I personally believe everyone should have them for home invasion protection, regardless if you get tornadoes or hurricanes in your area. The actual price per window as a product ranges from $150-$400, exterior doors being about $1,000-$2000 depending on style, and not counting screws, bucking, caulking, or installation if you have someone retrofit it for you. They usually pay subcontractors $100 per window and $250-$300 per single door or sliding panel. I give the pricing so that you all know how much it would cost if you should decide to have them installed, given to you by someone who knows the industry well. The major glazing contractors will charge you $2000 or more per window and $3k-$5k per door or slider. Find someone who knows how to do it and just pay them. The only 2 states that require a glazier to have a contractors license is Florida and Connecticut.
    Good luck, friends...

I have all 3 by my pillow, but when something goes bump in the night, I always grab the laser-guided Glock 19 pistol full of 9mm Speer hollow-points. I told my wife to do the same because: (1) Under stress... It would be far easier for her to operate. Rack, pull-trigger, pull-trigger. ARs and shotguns are harder to rack w/o jamming, let alone remembering to pump after the 1st shot. (2) It's easier to maneuver and to point while opening doors, etc. (3) At indoor distances, it's not that easy to miss, especially if she remembers to turn on the laser.
A 9mm pistol has less stopping power than an AR or shotgun, but after eating (or even being missed by) a 9mm hollow-point I think there's a negligible chance that a bad-guy would come for more.
Here in Commifornia, the 10-round-magazine-limit mitigates the capacity-advantage of pistols & ARs relative to a 7-round shotgun-- though popping in a fresh magazine is easier, in the unlikely event that there's an extended firefight. The bad guys would fight-fair by using 10-round magazines also, right? :-)

I totally agree. The longest shot in my house would be about 30 feet, tops. There is no need for too much accuracy there. I think the prospect of having a long gun grabbed by the muzzle in close quarter, perhaps when trying to clear a corner, far outweigh the benefit of a rifle, or shotgun. I believe in having a gun belt, with retention holster, So I could holster if I had to for some reason and still keep the gun with me, safely. With a pistol, I could keep a person at arms length if I had to with the pistol close to the body. I think not enough emphasis is given in these discussions of non-lethal confrontations. Merely shooting someone for being in your house can present legal problems in some states. I am in California as well, and we don't have stand-your-ground to save us. What do you do if someone is outside doing something? If you go out with a rifle, and they have no weapons but try to fist-fight you, that is a problem. Now if I KNOW I will be in a gunfight, outside, then I take a carbine for sure.

My home defense is as such, Shot gun (Mossberg 930 semi-auto and the Mossberg 590-A1) the 590 for the iconic sound the cocking makes (mine is custom so the sound is louder than it usually is on a regular shotgun) and the 930 for the rate of fire, then I have a smith and wesson 9mm and .45, finished with dragon skin body armor with helmet outfitted with night vison pull down goggles and a 12 inch Bowie (and that's just the blade), (Every member of the family has these exact tools fitted to them in case of an emergency, we are all properly trained and everything as well, my 14 year old daughter is the deadliest in the family) and I also have a button that sounds a really loud siren alarm that will wake up the entire neighborhood in all the bedrooms and bathrooms, and every door is made out of 3 inches of solid steel with vertical, and horizontal locking bolts with a thick steel frame, all glass is bullet proof rated for a .45 and all the walls have a 1/2 inch plate surrounding the entire area of the room, the entire house has water sprinklers for fire and there is a panic room hidden in the house itself, I have a computer system that locks all doors and windows at night and turns on all cameras and outdoor lights and motion sensors. Many of my neighbors called me paranoid and war prepared, and I tell them, "what kind of home defense would you have against a mob of liberals who think you are overly white and happy and need to be taken down a notch?"
FYI: All my friends have invested in the exact same home defense that I have installed, steel plates and all, some with even more guns and one bought a used tank for getaways, thank god all my friends are army ground pounders, one sniper trained, and the rest marines. I dare any fucking enemy (especially liberals) to come and cause some shit in my neighborhood, I taught a 93 year old grandmother how to use a 9mm with extreme accuracy, she's known as deaths grandma by the vets, hardcore lady and not someone to fuck with. So all you fucking lunatic liberals, come and cause some shit, please give me a reason to use the second amendment with impunity.

or PDW/subgun like P90 or Scorpion EVO (dealing with accuracy and capacity issues of the pistol.
PS: hard barrier penetration isnt always disadvantage, when someone is breaking down your door and you have to shoot through it a shotgun will be far less useful than pistol or rifle, or if the intruder hides behind furniture as another example.

I can run my 12 ga pump as fast as anyone with a semiauto shotgun so it is a solid weapon choice for me, although since I got my AR15 300BLK pistol I’ve been considering it as my primary. Great video and matrix for determining home defense selection. Over penetration has to be a primary concern based on rule #4 of gun safety. So not just in your house but your neighbors as well potentially. That said it’s your house floor plan that can add or detract from this index of consideration. For example I have a downstairs master that is “up-range” of the front and back door, so this may allow me to use the AR and handgun where a different floor plan wouldn’t offer this flexibility.

    Best hdw for newbies:
    38 +p dao revolver with 4” barrel.
Simple and reliable. The double action deters nd’s, 38+p has good close range stopping power while not being so violent in recoil (for the ladies and younger folks) and it provides some heft.
Ie; could deliver a pretty good pistol whipping vs a polymer striker fired pistol....if it came down to that.
Possibly couple that with a hand/fingerprint ID safe on the nightstand and you’re good to go.
    Thats my opinion.

    • @kickstand1111
      @kickstand1111 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I tired this with my wife and she just didn’t like the “look” of the revolver. 🙄🤷‍♂️
So she went shopping on her own decided on a BP-9. Only semi auto she could manipulate the slide (at the time. I know about the shield ez and plan on getting her one)
Anyway my biggest issue with that shit is she consistently puts her finger on the trigger out of habit. It’s a bad one I can’t seem to break her of. If she listened to me, and gone with the revolver, this would still be an issue but much less of one as it take @3x as much effort to fire the dao revolver over the BP-9. And worse, the bp9 has lighter trigger pull than a stock glock...which she has negligently discharged once. Lucky no one was injured or killed but could have been EASILY. I’ve fought and fought with her over this shit to exhaustion and I just resigned myself to hope she never causes a problem.
The good news is (I guess) she NEVER touches it. It stays locked in a Kydex holster all the time. Either on the night stand or in the glove box. (She refuses to train with it)
I’ve pushed to have her keep One in the pipe. I’ve debated like hell on this one but at the end of the day, in most every scenario I can image where she’d use it, counting on her chambering a round is just not good at all.
So the preverbal dice will be rolled.
      Ladies out there:
If you aren’t proficient with proper safety handling and manipulation of a semi auto, go with the revolver.
You loose some rounds but for fucks sake it’s safer.
      And guys out there:
Don’t fall in love with an extremely independent woman who’s way smarter than you, Italian, and hardheaded as fuck. 🤷‍♂️🙄🔫

If someone has almost no training then I like double barrel shotguns and double action revolvers with swing out cylinders, just because it is so easy to see if it is loaded or not, loading and unloading is easier (two steps), and you don’t have extra steps in use, maybe a safety on grandads goose gun but that is a single thumb control.
Once a person has training then a semi-auto 5.56 with 55 grain ballistic tip varminters, white light, and reflex sight is hard to beat. I like shotguns but for the reasons you pointed out with pump guns, the finicky nature of many semiautomatics, and the fact that most shotguns are not designed to be drop safe I tend to lean away.
By not drop safe I am referring to the fact that in Washington State at least one person a year is shot by their dog. What happens is that a water foul Hunter is in his blind when their lab knocks over the chambered shotgun and boom, half ol boys foot is now splat. You can avoid this by leaving the chamber empty (and save your hammer spring) but that is an extra action that has to be done before the weapon can be deployed.

  • @nicerperson1

Maybe look at it from another angle. Look at the bad points and see if you can reduce them.
Pistol, use expanding ammo, not ball. fit a laser to help with aiming.
Rifle, use a short barrel, adjustable stock, a laser or red dot.
Shotgun. use defensive ammo, reduce recoil with a 20ga instead of a 12ga, use a semiauto. Again, use a red dot or laser.
Something can be done to improve every choice. I would always have a good light (SAS guy said "bullets go where the light is shining") A good bright laser, grip activated.
At some point, you have to stop before you have a "Mall Ninja" weapon with night sights, bipod, front grip, bayonet, lights and lasers like a Christmas tree. But a good light is pretty much a must, not too bright, not too dispersed and one that is grip operated (so you don't have to think to switch it on)
Fortunately, my wife is a great shot with a double 30" barreled 12ga, a good shot with a semi auto rifle too. The one gun we have fitted with a light is our short-barreled semiauto magazine fed 12ga. It also has pop-up iron sights and a red dot. We use it for close range clay pigeon shooting in the dark 😎

A .22 will kill you just as dead as a 9mm you just have to put a few more in'em and is very controllable and easily moved from positions inside. Outside i am definitely switching to the rifle.

So by simply replacing the normal stock with a pistol brace, you avoid the $200 tax, the year long wait period, and most importantly the legal hassle.

5.7 will defeat some kevlar if it's FMJ and not HP/fragmenting, but if it is FMJ you lose almost all of its stopping power. FMJ 5.7 is probably inferior to HP 9mm since so many incredible bullets have been developed for 9mm (Speer Gold Dot, Hornady Critical Defense, etc.).
