The Genesis mops the floor with SNES when it comes to MK. The blood code, the music was FAR louder, and the controls were damn near 0 lag.
I don't care if it's grittier N missing voice samples. My family and I had a ball with this game, N fought for real over it 😂

As a kid once we discovered the blood genesis code the snes version was mocked and discarded. Many of my friends actually sold their snes to get the sega mortal kombat ..SNES version was a joke to any teen regardless if it had more sounds etc.

The SNES is better in every way except in the two most important ways that being gameplay and gore. Sega wins simply for a much better gameplay experience & included gore. As a teen when this came out & being a massive MK fan I was dissatisfied that no matter the console a faithful port was nowhere to be found.

I have always thought the SNES version of MK to be the better version - presentation-wise. That's what immersed me in the game - the looks, the sounds, the gameplay.
Sure the Genessis version had the blood and original fatalities but, what good were they if the presentation was so subpar? The graphics, the sounds, the fonts were all so lame and inferior. To me, the controls weren't a big deal cause to me, MK always felt a bit clunky and choppy, even in the arcades.
Still, looking back in hindsight now, I'd have to say neither of these versions is really that good. What one version excelled at, the other failed at _[miserably, I might add]._ So, in the end, it was just a straight, neutral line down the middle when it came to giving fans what they wanted.
In the end, nobody really got what they waited or asked for which to me, makes these two versions equally disappointing...

the snes obviously looks and sounds better than the genesis version. but the awful input lag kills the game play for me. the genesis port isn't near the arcade, but it is far as hideous as people will try to make it. the soundtrack is decent as well. but the gameplay is where it shines. also the optional blood code definitely helps out in bringing that arcade experience home . it's funny how all the fanboys always yell that it's not about the graphics UNTIL a port comparison comes into play...

The SNES port COULD have been the ultimate home console port - had Nintendo not completely striped the blood and gore from the game. And yes, the gore aspect of MK wasn’t the only thing that made the game interesting, but it was pretty much the main selling point of those earlier games, and most of the fanbase wanted the gory goodness of the arcade version in their own living rooms. The visuals, sounds, and music were damn-near arcade perfect. Had the SNES port retained the original gore and Fatalities, it would have been the best home port, imo. With the Genesis version containing the Blood Code, it outsold the SNES version 3 to 1.

I was always bothered by the fact that the Genesis music rotation is incorrect (compared to the Arcade). The MK Arcade Edition Enhanced Genesis romhack at least corrects most of this. (Except the Throne Room; I think the original melody is actually outright just not on the Genesis cart unfortunately).
As a kid I favored the SNES for the aesthetics but now playing both (Genesis with a 6 button)... I'd take Genesis 8 days a week.

I still remember in the 90s playing MK at the arcades then later saw it in Gamepro magazine.
I saw the poor rating but one Friday night I rented at a video store.
When I got home I popped in my SNES and it was fun but when I saw no blood or fatalities.
All the fun was gone so I returned it and got my refund.
Now the first time I played it on Genesis was at a friend friend’s house.
(During that time I was in high school)
On that day we all decided to ditch at lunchtime by jumping the fence in the back and running as quickly as we could.
    (I was a fast runner)
So we scattered because the cops were patrolling the area and decided to meet up at my friend’s friend's house because his parents weren't home.
When we got there he made for us sandwiches and ate them with chips washing them down with sodas.
He had lots of games for Genesis like Sonic the Hedgehog, Mercs, and others but when he popped in MK I told him:
“It better not be like the SNES version because it sucked badly.”
    He said:
“Trust me bro the Genesis version has a blood code and the fatalities.”
When he turned on his Genesis he waited for a text screen and started putting in a code on his controller quickly.
The words turned red and I said:
“No way bro like the arcade?”
    He said:
“Yes, but the graphics and sound suck bro.”
He had two controllers and we played until after school!
    I had so much fun!

In terms of better graphics, better sounds, chiller music, arcade accurate sprites and in-battle contents then Super NES all the way. Both had their ups and downs but in any game: gameplay and controls are the bread and butter so Sega Genesis version definitely had the upper hands here. Either way the first Mortal Kombat game itself isn't that great of a game to begin with so it's a meh argument at this point. It's not until Mortal Kombat II that the series really took off.

A fair assessment of the two 16 bit ports, definitely the correct conclusion, i'll take playability over a drop in graphics and sound every time, the Snes plays terribly and that can't be denied, laggy and awful hit detection too, one thing you didn't touch on is the Mega Drive has all the Endings and a still from the attract mode character FMV sequence which also adds a lot too the proceedings. Plus if you were lucky enough to have a 6 button controller it's just that little bit better, but as you said, the 3 Button is just about as good once you get used to it.

I rented MK1 for the SNES in the 90's. Never played the Genesis version. The Genesis version is lacking sound effects or they are muffled to the point where they are essentially absent. What most people miss about the fatality thing is that the Genesis version fails to set the mood for fatalities whereas SNES does it well. SNES has a special fatality sound effect, music stops and the screen goes dark. On the SNES Sonya and Scorpion have fatality sounds that are different from the rest adding the sound of the fire whereas on the Genesis the fatalities seem awkwardly casual with no music change, no screams of terror and even common sound effects are missing. They do have blood and Kano's fatality is still arguably better on the Genesis but the old argument about Genesis having better fatalities should be considered a controversial one. They are graphically better (save for Genesis' obvious lack of color and detail) but suck sound wise which hurts the atmosphere.

You may have misspoke during the graphics section for the Genesis. With the 3-Button controller, A by itself is Low Punch and Forward+A is High Punch.
Also, fun fact, for Sub-Zero’s fatality you don’t actually have to hit Forward Down Forward LP (A). You can hit the diagonal on the D Pad (between Forward and Down) twice and just tap A. So basically it’s “Diagonal, Diagonal, A” which is fun to say too! 😄

Great breakdown Darryl! I grew up with the SNES version and I do think it looks and sounds MUCH better than the Genesis (even with no blood). But yeah, in the end of the day gameplay is the most important for fun. I wish the devs hadn't messed that up so bad in this port.

(Dan Fordens original soundtrack smacks the crap outta genesis ost)While Sega had the gore, the fatalities they didn’t really match the intensity as they had on the arcade. • @johnsgamingandmore1237
      @johnsgamingandmore1237 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@drew9351 that's just my personal opinion lol I've owned both versions. The Genesis ranked higher on the controls as well (going off of memory on that one) I just think that the graphics are more crisp on SNES and the frame rate is excellent and the sound is almost near perfect due to the fact that there is more sound effects in the movement and speech on the SNES. I was thinking I would rank the Genesis version higher but I gave it fair thoughts on both sides. The reason why Genesis got higher on Overall fun is 1) the blood code...obviously and was using that in consideration lol and 2) some of the finishers were better on Genesis than the SNES version. Which again, in my opinion, I think that the SNES Sub-Zero fatality is cooler because he actually uses his ice ability and Cage's is just overall dumb on SNES. Don't get me wrong...I enjoy both of them

@BushyStallion like you said in the video, back in the '90's we knew how to adapt and overcome lol I still have the SNES version and I've noticed that if you do put an input on the direction it may not visually register I guess you could say but the data is still detected...I don't know how to explain it lol two examples with Scorpion...his spear is back, back, B and I can press back twice and he won't visually move and after pressing B it will be performed...and same thing with his fatality...get within sweep distance and press up, up fast with holding block and it will work (and that's how I always fight Reptile btw) 😄

I did a breakdown of both versions a few years ago on my channel. I think both version are poor ports, to be honest. While the Sega version has blood (with the code), it's missing a lot of content from the arcade that the SNES version includes, including a lot of sound effects and music, and most of the music it does contain plays on the wrong stages. It also looks worse without as much animation, detail or colour, sucks to play on the 3 button controller and even on the 6 button controller they changed some move inputs for some reason. It's like they banked on it selling off the blood code so didn't put any effort into anything else. However, the SNES isn't all sunshine and roses either, the lack of blood isn't the only issue with it, with the input lag being a far bigger problem. In the end, both versions are not particularly good. I think many people give the nod to the Sega version because blood code, but it's not a straightforward as that.

Blasphemy! 😂 I respect your opinion and how its changed over the years but i will still to this day always choose MK1 on SNES over Genesis any day of the week. As you mentioned, both have their strong and weak points. However, the one thing about the Genesis version that absolutely killed it for me was the lack of proper sound effects when punching, uppercutting, and kicking opponents. I mean it's soo faint it's almost like there's no sound at all. That's completely unacceptable. While the Snes version will always suffer from latency issues, everything else about the game was superior and it showed. Sure Genesis had its own little catchy music but that's another thing. When doing fatalities the music just keeps playing. On the SNES version the music switches up and makes the player feel the true darkness of the fatality being performed. I understand your opinion but mine will forever be on the side of the SNES Version. Great Review regardless. 🩸👊

I agree, Probe really dropped the ball and got too many things wrong. It boggles my mind as to why they had to handle every single port of MK 1 and 2 (except snes) MK3 was a breath of fresh air because Sculptured Software did a much better job

Great breakdown dude I see your side and opinion and I respect it. And I knew something seemed off with Genesis Fatalities and you nailed it noticing the music, that DOES make a big difference actually. Fun is everything to me when playing games now because otherwise I’m not playing it, it’s playing me and I don’t play that (see what I did there) *slaps knee. 4:00 "That's Loud!" That loud funky Matt Furniss interpretation of the original Dan Forden tunes is a big win for the Genesis in my eyes. The Snes tunes are more Arcade accurate, that would be a true statement, but this is one case where the raspy synth twang of Sega beats out the usually superior orchestral sounding Snes in music.

I can see your point of view. However, I rate the visuals, and sound, a little more in my rating of how much I enjoyed the two games, so I give the SNES a slightly bigger bonus than the Genesis. Also, I had a SNES, and would only play the Genesis when at a friend's house. I just never got used to the Genesis controls, as a result. Having Start be Block really annoyed the hell out of me. I loved having Block be a shoulder button on the SNES. Additionally, I never really liked the feel of the arcade controls for MK1, even though I loved the game, overall. The arcade always felt really slow compared to what I wanted to input, so the timing for the SNES was just another thing I had to get used to, like the speed of the arcade. Oddly, that point made it feel more realistic to the arcade experience, for me. The Genesis seemed almost too fast, by comparison, at the expense of graphical fidelity.
