The recent 32X hack showed that it could have been a little bit better but there was still a big factor that held back that port and many other 32X games: cartridge size. 32Mb is very small and there is only so much gamedata you can cram in it.

Yup, fun factor is accurate for me, SNES is just the arcade at home with all of it's AI shenanigans, while 32X is the arcade at home (at higher difficulties) but it actually got tweaked in the lower difficulties (just no ending images, just the standard vs screen portraits for the characters (also no "have a nice day" quote in the Shang Tsung ending). Regardless, I play any of the two versions anytime due to how good they are overall (and yeah, the limited continues factor forced us to learn to some extent the ins and outs of the AI as back then, aside of accidentally introduce the cheat, we had no way to know without magazines or other stuff as the Internet wasn't a thing yet, in my case MKT N64 was the game that forced me to do that before I beated it for the 1st time with a combination of Noob Saibot and Cyrax).

I’m a SNES kid. I had MKII when it first came out in the 90s. I loved it. Mortal Kombat II still stands as my favorite of the entire series.
That being said, I think the 32X version is a better version. The differences are slight, but noticeable. I think the sound makes a difference. While the music may be more arcade accurate for the SNES, the 32X has much crisper voices. This makes it a more immersive experience. Plus, the colors are just more crisp on SEGA’s 32-Bit system.
Both games are comparable when it comes to controls, as long as you use a 6-button controller for the 32X.
All in all, you can’t go wrong with either version. If you have the ability, I think the 32X edges the SNES out slightly. Both are outstanding. But my vote goes to the 32X.

I never really grew up with a 32x or a SNES, if anything I would go over my friend’s house at the time and we would play MK2 on his SNES. I liked it a lot, if anything it was my favorite version of MK2. Once I got the hang of emulation and growing older to buy the games myself. I decided to go on a little test, playing MK2 on each console variant. Surprisingly, I keep going back to the 32x every time I want to play it and of course can’t go without saying the PS1 variant is the worst lmao

    SNES, Hands down!
imo It was the Greatest thing to Happen to MK on Consoles in the Mid 90s. Hell, I'd even say Fighting Games on the SNES. Especially, considering MK92 was Censored on the SNES. Taking MK2 home loading it up for the first time was something Special. I had lots of fun on it for Years. I still Regret selling my SNES and Games to upgrade to a PSX.
MK2 SNES is still One of my all time Favourite Games, I'd love to play it on the Switch. But yeah, WBD Hate Money soooo...

The 32X should’ve been the definitive home port. Same stages with very little enhancements, the music is EXACTLY the same on Genesis, still missing animation frames, while there’s more sound samples some are still from the Genesis version and are missing.
It should’ve been arcade perfect out the gate.

In the 32X version all backgrounds are rendered by the Genesis/Mega Drive, that's why the backgrounds look more grainy.
The characters are rendered by the 32X, so they look way more vibrant/detailed/colorful.

This is also why you have to "route" the video output of the Genesis/Mega Drive into the 32X and from the 32X to your display.
The Genesis/Mega Drive renders the background using it's "limited" palette, passes it trough to the 32X which "adds/merges" the character graphics on top of it using it's 32000 color palette, and then outputs it to your display.

32x was the best port graphically and by play ability. It truly felt like the arcade at home. While having all the announcer sounds, it kept the Genesis sound effects, which just didn't didn't make it arcade correct. I don't know if this was a hardware limitation or just laziness. I really enjoyed the 32x version when it came out, and was my go to version. As arcade collection became more common for 1/2 gen consoles, I mostly played there, to get the best arcade feel. Now, emulation (arcade) is truly the way to go. I only have room for 1 arcade cabinet in my house, and I scored a UMK3 machine, taking up an unnecessary amount of space, but I love it. I met Daniel Pesina, and he signed most of my cartridges, so they are no longer an option for casual play.

I've played all 2 versions in the 90s.
Mega drive was a big disappointment and snes a big surprise. The 32x was incredible and compensate the genesis flaws.
Graphically the snes had a resolution too low and made the game looks washed and too many sprites missing , the 32x was really good, but missed some small details. Anyway, I would give the edge to the 32x.
Sound , I never liked the muffled snes music, but it has more samples than 32x and it the arcade original. But in the end I enjoyed more the 32x high frequency sound.
The game play, well, this was always sega's benchmark. It plays great, the fluidity is awesome. But the speed walking backwards does not match the arcade.
Don't take me wrong. The snes was one of the best fighting games for the system (I think it only looses to killer innsticn) but 32x was superior in all points.
Liked your sincere video, because most people that grew up with snes are terrible people that thinks snes was perfect (just see some of the fanboy comments here) . And you gave a chance to 32x.

The 32X has the Arcade scaling and graphics, but if they had the arcade-like music and some animations overhauled...Maybe, I'll put it over the SNES version. Anyways, both great versions if you ask me. I'll say the 32X version is more responsive than the SNES.

The characters on 32x look great. Good colors, good animation, and good controls (if you have a 6 button controller)...but the thing that kills it for me is that the stages don't look very good. Mortal Kombat 2 on SNES best game ever especially in the 90s when Gamepro magazine gave it a perfect score of 5.0 for Graphics, Sound, Controls, and Fun Factor.

My understanding is that the SNES sound hardware was primarily sample based. But there was also limited memory available to house the samples. Some developers really just knew how to work some brilliant compression magic -- Final Fantasy, Street Fighter** -- but others struggled, maybe because the samples chosen were too difficult to make sound good after compression in some cases. That may have contributed to the hollow / muffled sound in some games. (I also remember reading or hearing that the sound system doesn't have any built in sound synth so you had to record and load in samples just to get started. I may have misunderstood that anecdote though.)
Genesis / 32x hardware could be considered almost the opposite: robust built-in Yamaha FM synthesis -- the twang -- and no need to worry about limited memory as an obstacle to start creating music straight away... but poor sample capabilities on Genesis. It's why music notes sound so crisp, while voices sounded scratchy and unclear. 32x had far better voice sample playback.
**Fun fact: Both the Genesis and Capcom's CPS1 arcade hardware used chips that employed Yamaha FM synthesis as their primary methods for playing music. Therefore Genesis Street Fighter II music (before Super) sounded closer to the arcade than the SNES versions did, as the latter used a soundtrack with all-new instrument samples (there were no trumpets in the arcade version of Guile's stage). But the tables turned when Capcom moved Super Street Fighter II to the CPS2 board with Q-sound sample-based music... SNES sounded more like that arcade port whereas the Genesis couldn't hang. (For what it's worth I really dislike the instrumentation in most versions of Super, including the arcade.)
I dunno what my point was. Your vids always make me think about sound and music.

Actually the names outside of life bar doesn't botter anyone. It's just that Sega fans, because usually Snes version of the games blows Genesis versions out of the water (especially MK2), need to nitpick any little irrelevant thing they can find, and make a big fuzz out of it, so it "balance" the comparison with the (leagues) better MK2 on Snes. Actually, I say that the names inside the life bar it's worse, since it makes a little more difficult to see and measure where you life actually is, when it happens to overlap with some letter. It's cleaner and easier to see your energy left without some letters in the way.

Both have their strong points on graphics. The characters look sharper on the 32X but they lack certain frames of animation and the bacgrounds look grainier than the SNES version.
Sound wise, the voices sound clearer on the 32X but some voices are missing such as slipping on the ice. The projectile attacks sound "funny" on the 32X instead of sounding menacing. This is very apparent when you compare the ice throw of Sub Zero.
I do remember sometimes feeling a very slight delay sometimes on the SNES on my inputs.
Seriously though, as mentioned, both versions are great whichever console you own. The same could not be said about MK1.

the "graininess" there is the dithering patern, you can't see it on a Tube with composite cables, in that case it helps the graphics producing colors that weren't there before and gradients. It's nice, but on a LCD the snes version looks better.

One point you didn't noticed/highlighted is: in the SNES version, when you execute a stage fatality, the death scream is always cut short while in the 32X version it has that long scream of terror like in the arcade. Most of the sfx I prefer on the SNES, it also has more narrator samples, etc. But the lack of proper gore in the stage fatalities is something that makes a difference IMO since MKII was pretty much focused on that (gore, violence, terror, etc.).

@ProtoManZero - funny how none of the reviewers (Gamepro, EGM, Nintendo Power, Gamefan, etc) back in the day mentioned anything about input lag on MK2 SNES after noting how MK1 did have lag. And I've been playing my copy of MK2 for 30 years & no input lag. MK1 absolutely there is, but not MK2. Let me guess, you're a Sega fanboy with a special perception of input lag & believed something you heard about it so you could say your version's better. Maybe actually play it & you'll see there isn't. I just played as Rayden vs Reptile in the Tomb on SNES & pulled off all the moves with no lag & beat Reptile's ass. Then I did the same on 32X. And yes I am a fanboy- of MK2 on 32X & SNES. It's pretty silly to have bias for or against a competing console & it's even more silly to assign fanboy goggles to someone when you don't know what you're talking about

Just saw the video about mk2 for the genesis and it sparked my interest in mk2-on-genesis, so I went back to THIS video because I remembered that you had also compared to 32X version to the SNES.
Clearly, the audio is less compressed on the 32X for the stage announcer and game audio in-general, however the SNES version is nearly flawless on just about every technical aspect, and it was an amazing feat that they got it so arcade-perfect on such ancient hardware even back then.
I actually grew up with the genesis version and later on the SNES version but always preferred SNES as a kid because me and my friends analyzed it to death and ultimately I had to admit the SNES version was the superior game, but I defended the genesis ardently.
As an adult I’m falling back in love with genesis/32x version. It’s crazy how many different platforms this game was on back then….
This game was one of the many reasons I envied everyone with a SNES back then, Nintendo owners just got treated right and it took owning the Saturn and Dreamcast to make me jaded with SEGA and stopped really paying attention to anything they made or going back and playing nostalgic titles, but when I hear the genesis sound font I realize how iengrained in my head it is!
Love the channel man, much love Daryl keep it up!
