  • Welcome to Day 12 of 12 Days of Last Minute DIY Gifts! In this video I share with you my quick and dirty way to make reusable fabric bowl covers.
    I walk you threw the steps of measuring your bowl for a custom cover and the technique I use for make and cutting perfect circles without the use of a template.
    Remember to make a sample first and work out the fit you'd like for your bowl. Make several in different sizes and you'll always have one when you need it!
    This project only requires a few basic supplies, a sewing machine with both straight and zig-zag stitch capability and some elastic. Happy sewing!

    For those of you asking about using a plastic liner to make it more airtight.... Beeswax. There are tutorials on TH-cam showing how to make reusable sandwich wraps and bags, basically making the fabric waterproof with beeswax. They rinse clean, are natural and organic, and non-toxic to use against your food. People have used beeswaxed fabrics forever. 🙂

    Seriously, I use youtube for help and education and hands down - this is one of the best channels on youtube. This is what I feel it was made for...it's very far from that now!

    Hey Vanessa, I made this two years ago and it’s unbelievable how many times we used them. I made in different sizes and I did not know how much my family would use them. I’m here to make more along with the bowl cozies. I haven’t sewn much in a year (medical reason), but I’m slowly starting again. Thanks for freely keeping these online for references. Really appreciate that❤. You Are a Blessed Gem!

    I love these covers. I hacked these by adding a patch of clear plastic to the center. I save everything so I have a stash of clear plastic from the packaging from blankets and comforters. This allows me to see what's under my reusable covers!! Thanks Again

    Thank you for making this! I am going to be making miniature versions for my friends to take to university to cover their glasses when they are out clubbing to try and keep them safe from being spiked!

      Add a button hole on the tops so they can insert their straw.

    • @susanowen1709
      @susanowen1709 ปีที่แล้ว

      Now that's a great idea! I think I'll make some not for clubbing, but for keeping bugs out of our cups when we BBQ. And I like @kathywatkins9628 's suggestion of the buttonhole for a straw, too.

    I'm 7:59 minutes in, and I've paused this three times so far. The first time was to stare off into the distance to absorb the brilliant way you made the circle. The second was to see if you're still active before clicking the subscribe button (you are! And I did!). The third was just now. You see, I learned to use a sewing machine in home ec in 1977 (yes, I am old). I sewed on-and-off (mostly off, and not very well) for years. I have friends who sew, including one who does it professionally as a career. I have several books on how to sew. And you, my new TH-cam mentor, are the first person to ever point out that the numbers on the width & length dials refer to millimeters. I was totally clueless on that, so thank you! This is the second video of yours that I've watched (the first was for potholders), and they way you describe not just the "how," but the "why" for each technique is incredibly helpful. (Edited for clarity)

    Vanessa thank you so much for this series. You are amazing, with all your family and "farm" responsibilities you managed to produce 12 fantastic tutorials. Thank you to your cameraman too. You are a great teacher (and being a trainer of trainers for 30 years I don't give out compliments very often) I see that many of your viewers are suggesting that you keep making these "daily" offerings. As much as that would be a great fantasy - I would not want you to burn out. Seasonal series would be great enough. Your series reminded me of many projects I have done over the years. I don't have the energy nor videographic knowledge to put together a tutorial but would be happy to send you my projects in case you like to collect more of them Let me know. Again many many thanks. I live in Vermont and waiting for a hip replacement I need easy in-door seated projects. Happy Holidays, most sincerely, Tereska

    I have only watched two of your video's ( the soup bowl cover & now this one ) and I have subscribed with just watching the first one. I love these much better then using plastic lids or covers and it will be cheaper and better -just wash no throwing them in the trash when finished using them -wash, dry and reuse . Love this idea.

    Pretty good job, kiddo. I would advise anyone who is making these covers to add 3 to 4 inches to the width of the bowl rather than just two inches. That way your finished cover can accommodate food in the bowl that is higher than the rim. Will also give you more versatility in case you want to use that same cover for a larger bowl!

    I was raised on a farm and milked by hand many cows...in upstate NY near Niagara Falls, Graduated from College up there and then moved to Fl nearly 50 yrs ago....and had a small farm here...my wife and sons loved the animals...the cow and chickens / goats / pigs...and huge garden.....we enjoyed the bounties of Mother Nature for a number of years. Your family will LOVE THIS as time goes on....I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. :)

    I love these covers. I have a collection of sizes. I have the issue with people in my house not recovering the bowls if they don't find what they want inside. So to combat this, I cut a square space out of the center and added a patch of clear vinyl so they could see what is under the lid! lol Works out great.

  • @marybowen1057
    @marybowen1057 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have resisted making these covers, like to see what is in the bowl. So I modified with a piece of clear vinyl sewn into the middle of the cover to serve as a window, Zigzagged around the edges of the vinyl and cut away fabric with pinking shears. Thanks for the pattern and motivation.
