Monster Hunter, Armored Core, and .Hack played a huge role in my childhood. Each of them having shaped my preferences in what I want from a game.

This is a nice little deviation from the channel norm. I appreciate you sharing your history with Armored Core as it no doubt was instrumental in your aspirations toward game development. The closest thing to Armored Core I've ever played was Chromehounds, which was apparently also developed by FromSoftware. Sadly, I was too young and dumb to understand how to play it competently, and its servers were shutdown not long after I got the game. Given your stated love for the series, I'm sure this will be a fun detour, and will build proper hype for the upcoming AC6. Looking forward to the next video.

This is now an armored core channel, and I love it! :)
Also I wanted to share my little story with how I got into AC franchise, it isn't anywhere near as exciting as yours, but still.
For the first time I found out about it when I was searching games that I could play on my newly aquired PSP 5 years ago, I found PSP ports of 3rd gen AC games, but when I searched for gameplay videos or reviews on youtube, all I could find are gameplay videos, where a person playing clearly didn't know what they were doing, and because of that the game felt like it will be very slow and clunky, then I searched for the best AC games on Metacritic, and found out that most of the games have a score of under 60, so I thought that they are really bad and haven't bothered trying them (boy, was I wrong!). Then in the end of 2022 I was waiting for a new From Sofware announcement (as a big fan of their souls games), and I hoped that it will either be a new IP or Bloodborne 2, but then got dissapointed to see that it's just a sequel to this weird obscure mecha franchise, and didn't care about it at all.
But then a few days later I re-watched the trailer and got really interested in this franchise, so I tried looking for youtube videos about it. That's where I found a channel called "above average gaming", and after watching a few videos I got really inspired to play AC3, as he suggested that it's the best place to start for a beginner. And when I started playing it, it clicked almost instantly. I was hooked, and was really surprised on how this game was so ahead of its time, and to this day has nothing comapable to its depth in game mechanics, art style, customization and especially its amazing music. I built my perfect mech, which was an experience that I never had in any game before, all that tweaking and testing made me feel like a scientist tring to optimise a perfect killing macine, and it felt so personal, especially the fact that you can pick any combination of colors to any of your parts, and that you can design your own logo (man I love when games do that). So this is when I fell in love with the mech that I created, as well as in this franchise, I've beaten AC3, then instatnly started AC: Silent Line the same day and eventually finished it as well, loved both of them, and now my song playlist consists of like 90% songs Armored Core games. And I will never trust to Metacritic ever again.
Then I decided to pick up Blender again after a long time, and rediscovered your channel (the best one for Blender tips), and I was so surprised to hear a song from a AC: Nexus in the ending of one of your UV editing tutorials, as well as sounds from 3rd gen games menues, then I noticed that your channel avatar and name feel like it came out straight out of Armored Core universe, and I thought that you're such a man of culture, it made me so happy to find out that you're a fan of AC too :)
I'm very excited for AC6, and will play the hell out of it when it comes out :)
Btw, what song plays in the end of this video?

Thank you so much for sharing such a detailed and personal experience, I'm so glad to hear that you have good memories with the game, and somehow ended up back here on the channel from Blender haha - I really enjoyed the reading through your comment, and please make yourself comfortable here on the channel, it's always a pleasure to have more Ravens around :)

It's fascinating how seemingly little things and events can shape us that much. Like what would have happened if your dad came back with a different game. I haven't played it myself, but for the PS2 era, that was one impressive opening cinematic.

    Your backstory was amazing.
Mine isnt as wholesome. But one day i went over to my friends house and watched him play the opening mission. Get his Raven status. Then we played multiplayer and we have a balst trying ro figure out the controls together.
A week later i got AC2: Another Age. I didnt care that it didnt have arena or a story. I was just glad to play and get better.
Im glad you are going to be delving into rhe gameplay side. As I feel Armored Core's gameplay is the reason we had so many games. And why the formula didnt change .. too much over the first 3 gens

While beating Nine-Ball was the closest I ever got to a competitive experience with Armored Core I still find myself thinking about that game even today. Especially the destroying the orbital space laser mission. And the White Glint opening cinematic in For Answer is to this day among my favorite game trailers ever made. AC was a franchise ahead of it's time.

Royal Skies, if you're still looking for a good PS2 Gundam game, I advise "Mobile Suit Gundam: Federation vs. Zeon" if you like the original series/The Origin manga and movies (like myself), or "Mobile Suit Gundam: Gundam vs. Zeta Gundam" if you like Z and ZZ too. Everything else it's either bad, boringly simple or in japanese, but for the PS2 I still have to play Zeonic Front.
I played Armored Core on the PSX when I was little but I never finished it, then in 2019 (when I got very sick and had a lot of free time sitting at my desk) I had the chance to finally really get into it, so I chose the first title that (FINALLY!!!) made use of the dual analog sticks, which is Nexus. I played it through on PCSX2, I had tons of fun with it and I 100% it.
After that I finished Last Raven, which was hell since I had no Human+ and I didn't even know what that was. Then I jumped to For Answer (since I heard it was better then 4) and then 4 on the PS3, so that I could live through the 15-20 fps experience once again.
Since I was hungry for more, I went back on PCSX2 and remembered that I could remap the buttons so that I could use the analog sticks, so I did it and played through AC3 and Silent Line.
I'm very hyped for AC6, because I feel like they applied what they've learned from all their action/action-rpg games to Armored Core, that despite having its charm all the games were that couple of steps away from greatness. I'm a bit puzzled by the scan mechanic (from ACV) and the seemingly absent FCS module, but everything else seems like a dream came true.
A bunch of weeks ago I was pretty annoyed by some of the "Souls-tuber" (I'm a huge souls fan myself btw) jumping on the Armored Core hype train, but I was pleasantly surprised by VaatiVidya. He went through all the games on original hardware (in almost every case) and made an amazing video embracing all the brand had to offer.
So I guess that now I MUST play through AC2.
If anyone is interested in playing the previous AC games on PC:
    - AC1 can be played on DuckStation
    - AC2, 3, Nexus e Last Raven can be played on PCSX2
    - AC4, For Answer, V and Verdict Day can be played on RPCS3
    My personal favorite are:
    -For Answer
    -AC3
    -Nexus.

Similar situation to my intro to the series, AC2 was my first and from that intro cinematic and tutorial mission, I was hooked and it became my favourite game series and seeing Leos Klein on Phobos will forever be one of my favourite gaming moments
Also I would like to add a thanks for all the tutorials and help, your channel is brilliant and was literally an instant subscribe when I first heard an outro with AC music, I started my 3D journey two years ago and trying to break into the industry, I may have to start focusing on hardsurface and make some AC looking models hah

I've always had Armored Core in a special place in my heart. I could never find another game like it. The customization, robots, setting, and especially the gameplay. And, tbh, without it, idk if I ever would've gotten as deep in blender as I am now. Super excited for AC6. Great piloting btw!

I could relate to a lot of your story. Mechwarrior 2 was my gateway into pc mech games, it included the game book of weapons, formations, and stats. I practically memorized it and this was elementary school. I wasn't that good and it being, pc there were a lot of other things to play, but MW2 will forever stick with me.

man, armored core really is something. I purchased Nexus as my entry. I dunno what's going when playing the game without knowing with heat mechanic is absolute bonker, energy regen too slow, why some mission is easy and hard, why that red machine in the last mission look cool and so on. but I finish the game satisfying and 100% the game afterward. what hook me to Nexus is because of that cool af intro.
AC is love, AC is life

0:21 I had an similar story, but it was mainly random PS2 games. An lot of them were flight sims. One of them was actually bragging about being inspired from the greatest sci-fi movies (mainly that supercarrier from the Phantom Menace), got Star Wars Starfighter, and Robotech: Battlecry

So many things are like that -- everyone says, "hey (abc) is the best there is!" and everyone just goes with that. But try something different, sometimes just because it's different or by random chance, or just think about it for yourself, and you find something way better than (abc) (insert anything as 'abc'). I was 7-8 when Armoured Core 1 came out in the UK. I had recently played my first game ever (Smash Bros on the N64, as Samus) and had just seen Star Wars V in the cinema re-releases. Already Sci Fi had a strong appeal for me.
Armoured Core 1 went over my head, my older brother and Dad played it, I remember watching them and them celebrating when they actually beat levels. It was hard.
Armoured Core 2 came out a couple of years later.
    That intro cinematic.
    The music.
The sound effect when the drop pod flutters open.
The speed and style of the mechs.
I played the hell out of it, and 3, and 4 (didn't realise the side games existed at the time, wish I did.)
Choosing my favourite looking parts, learning to manage the stats a bit, wondering about the personalities and emblems and tiny stories of the Arena pilots and making up stories about them in my head. They seemed like Knights to me, a lot of them, this high echelon of skilled pilot warriors. Noblesse Oblige became a favourite of mine.
I know exactly how you felt loading up that disc and watching those first 2 minutes. It stuck with me forever.
Even the music and sounds in the menu I can still hear perfectly. For a good 20 years I used "Raven" as part of most of my online names on accounts or forums and game saves.
I haven't played VI yet, saving a lot of money atm, but before I do I'm going to dig out my old PS2 and memory cards and look at my builds for 2, 3 and 4 so I can play around then recreate them in 6. I cannot wait!

I've always enjoyed Armored Core for its functional customization and in 4 and 5, its fun multiplayer pvp aspect. I can't wait to see what you can teach us in your future videos on that mecha game project that involves some AC aspects. I've been following your channel closely for Blender recently in hopes that I can design my own mecha game with ac-like gampeplay and possibly even more. If anything, finding your channel out of nowhere was perfectly in time now that I think about it!

AC1 was my jam. I bought all of the sequels up until 4. None of them ever fully recaptured the magic for me, but most were at least decent up until the series felt like it tried to reinvent the wheel. Then it was too fast, too chaotic, and too far removed form the thing I enjoyed. Then I dropped off. AC6 looks like it will be solid and enjoyable enough with a happy median between the series and other games they've made, but I still don't think it will live up to my experience with AC1. There's something special about the first one that transcends nostalgia. It had that lightning in a bottle quality that only a handful of games and movies ever achieve. It will always be one of my top ten games of all time.

I was in S. Korea when the 1st one came out & @ lunch we used to have matches & bet on who would win & eventually I stopped because I just kept taking ppl's $$. Honestly not sure how much was me or how much was because I used to have a dual flightstick that was made for the japan release of the first game It worked just as good for the 2nd game as well. If you lookup the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro & then have that style stick on both sides with your other buttons & potentiometer dials on the center of the board in between. I did have experience playing nearly all the mechwarrior games including in the Battletech center in chicago so I'm sure that helped. Also just a note it isn't possible to get all the parts & extra option parts in AC2 unless you import a 100% completed game save from AC1... (That includes getting the "hidden & special mission parts")

Get a demo disk with a magzine who's name I've long forgotten. Play through a few demos on my PS 1, go to sleep. Crap day at school ensues before I get back to gaming, decide 'eah, finish off the disk'. Demo version of Armored Core is on there. That's how I found the series, and holy lord has it been a long, wild ride over the many years. Words can not express how much it hurt to know Generation 5 was lost to me by being an exclusive for a console I'd never own. To see 6 on the horizon has made me a very happy man indeed. Now I just need to live long enough for a proper full season (24 episodes, none of this half season nonsense!) anime for Armored Core to happen, and I'm pretty sure I'll be out of things I wanted when I was a teenager.

Yeah, never was able to get into the competitive side of this game series until the PS3 era. Even then I was late to the party, gave up after it became clear I wasn't all that good anyway.
Don't get me wrong, I could wipe out the single player with little trouble, just for some reason I struggled in multiplayer. Granted, after running into the tryhards who see being good at the multiplayer as an end all be all of achievements or something. Claiming I was envious...for some reason, that I wasn't as good at a video game.
It didn't exactly bother me, I would never be welcomed among the ranks.
I still love the series, I just stay away from the PvP for reasons stated above.
