    In January of this year, I bought the RG35XX for myself and my girlfriend got one, too.
    I’ve played it far more than any video game device I own this year (including a Steam Deck and OLED Switch).
    BlackSeraph made this device into absolute amazingness with very little downside.
    As it stands, I’m banking on BlackSeraph to do it again with GarlicOS 2.0 and will be purchasing a Plus. Here’s my reasoning as someone absolutely in love with his original and who quite literally carries it with me alongside my phone everywhere I go:
    * upgraded shoulder buttons
    * upgraded battery
    * support for Bluetooth so my 8BitDo controllers would work, along with my HDMI adapter, turning this into my ultimate “play anywhere” device
    * a larger library of games
    * more consistent PSX emulation (Jumping Flash didn’t work properly on GarlicOS 1.4.9)
    * whatever benefits and libraries the new GarlicOS will bring
    I’m willing to make that bet that GarlicOS will make this thing even more magical.

    I bought RG35XX because of what it was physically capable of. Which is being a good enough modern solution to playing all my GB and GBA games for less than 100$. Buying an upgrade to play games that requires analog sticks or a touch screen is baffling to me. Why go through all the trouble of remapping buttons and shortcuts just to have a worse gaming experience than the original hardware? And this is coming from me, a guy that would spend half a day tinkering with custom Android roms or Steam Deck plugins just to end up not playing anything.

      Probably because that this unit actually has a size that's relatively pocketable that isn't too uncomfortable to hold for long periods(Kinda debatable) and I don't think Nintendo has made retro games available outside an online subscription+DLC
      And your alternatives are either too poorly stocked or too big to conveniently carry around or too expensive
      Speaking from someone who also has a N3DS and Switch OLED

    • @robhulson
      @robhulson ปีที่แล้ว

      I got a Steam Deck in November 2022, and I still bought the RG35XX in January of this year. Already owned a Retroid Pocket 2, a Switch OLED, N3DS (soft modded), Wii U (soft modded), and I even tried getting a Tracfone Galaxy a10e with an 8BitDo Pro2 and phone holder.
      Clearly, I was looking for something.
      The RG35XX goes with me everywhere. I play it in line at the supermarket, I’ll play it at the dentist office. I’ll play it on the couch next to my kids, I’ll play it in bed alone. My girlfriend has one and we’ll play side by side.
      I was close to buying the Miyoo Mini but it wasn’t ever available. This device really hit the sweetest of spots with its form factor and availability, and I’ll take slight iterative improvements on it and will probably upgrade to every version that comes out.
      Probably the best thing I did was narrowing my ROM set. I’ve been following emulation closely since the late 90’s, and my collection has evolved over the years until I have pretty much an exhaustive list of pre-1999 mainstream console games.
      I simply went through every folder, line by line, asking myself, “Do I actually like this game? Was I genuinely curious about this game?” and made a curated version of my library. Threw it on my RG35XX and voila, couldn’t put it down.
      Meanwhile my Steam Deck had EVERYTHING. And there it sat, collecting dust (until I decided to play RE2 and RE3 Remakes late this year).
      Been focusing not just on beating the old classics, but mastering them. And also got into the improvement ROMhacks and wow are they amazing.
      I love this thing.

      I love you guys, we are in the same boat.

      I got my RG35XX in January of 2023.
      Just got the Plus last week and put MinUI on it as I wait for Garlic to improve.
      It’s important to me that I both support current good faith efforts my devs to preserve classic games (hence I have a NSO subscription, and I bought Metroid Prime Remastered and am about to get Mario RPG), but I don’t want that to ever take the place of my own ownership over the hardware and software side of video games.

    one thing I want to add is when custom firmware comes out, this might be the best way to play gba and PS1 because of specific reasons. For GBA, you would have the benefit of using mGBA for all games which is a emulator that has higher compatibility and less graphical issues comepare to others emulator like gpsp. Don't know about the RG35XX but I know for the Miyoo Mini Plus, it has performance issues for some games running mGBA like FF6 or Monkey Ball for example.
    For PS1, you might have the option for better audio. For pcsx rearmed, they have a audio option which helps the game sound like they did on PS1. On low end devices, its usally put on Simple or Off because it cause performance issues. If you play a game you're really familiar with, you can that your game doesnt sound right. For me, FF7 sounded crunchy.
    Just for the bit increase in accuracy and performance, I think it will be worth it if it had custom firmware.

    I love the XX. Its the perfect modern gameboy. However, I will stick to my RG351V for now because I'm not a garlicOS fan. I prefer AmberElec, which isn't compatible to the XX line. Plus the 351V's one stick (no one needs two) is a nice benifit.

    At this price point, the perfect use for this seems like as a gift for your kids/nieces/nephews/et al, just like the GameBoys we got for our birthdays and christmases back in the day. Especially as a Switch alternative, even if the family already has one.
    Unwrapping this or finding it in your stocking, set up and full of 8-bit/16-bit/ps1 games, would be really exciting as a youngster.

    for me, the thing that has me considering it is the bluetooth. it was the only thing holding back my original 35xx really from an hdmi out portable switch-like device. so bluetooth is huge, but there seems to be one issue, the video out is still stretched all wrong. if custom firmware fixes that, I'll upgrade instantly.
    Also the d pad is more rounded and looks more comfortable.

      @Lucifronz ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pretty sure I've seen a video already showing the beta for Garlic OS 2.0 and it has options for toggling your HDMI-out aspect ratio. Don't take my word for that, though.
      Even if I'm misremembering, I'm sure it'll be a feature. It *has* to be, that's essential! But we'll see.

    Playing DS games on a single-screen handheld is fairly absurd, *but* for people who don't have a 3DS or other dual-screen handheld for it, there are _a few_ games that are options (EDIT: You mention it, but I'll leave it up for people who want options on this or any other single-screen handheld). I can't say I've tested any of them, but I know that Chrono Trigger has a single-screen option to match the original SNES release and Resident Evil DS has a Classic Mode that is essentially just the original game mode that doesn't include any of the touch screen controls that Rebirth had, and you can toggle between screens with a button combo to see your map and ammo, so it's effectively like a small upgrade to the original PS1 classic that required you to open your menu to see your remaining ammo clip counter anyway.
    Plus other titles like maybe Kirby Super Star Ultra, if you don't mind your health not being visible (it's Kirby, so it doesn't really matter), or the Mega Man Zero Collection port.
    Of course, *all* of these are ported titles and you would probably just be better off playing the originals emulated anyway. But one title that *isn't* a port is Kingdom Hearts 358 1/2 Days. That does make use of the dual-screen system, but not to the point that you'd need to see it all the time. In fact, most of the time you'd just play normally and only open it up the same as any other game when you want to check a map or something.
    There are also the Castlevania games. Now, you are required to use the touchscreen controls for some sort of sigil mechanic and signing your name at the beginning or some stupid gimmick like that for the first of these games on DS, but there is actually a patch for the ROM that removes this entirely that you can download and apply to your ROM, making it essentially just your normal everyday single-screen Castlevania game.
    There are probably a lot more. I know one of the early launch-era DS Asphalt games is doable, probably because they didn't make much use of the DS mechanics as it was just a mobile port, but it's better to play it that way than on mobile.

    The stock OS on this is actually better than the original because on this one you can go into all the retroarch settings and tinker to your hearts content. On the original RG35XX you couldn’t do that so that alone is reason enough to buy this over the original. Also, on drastic, you could’ve used HD resolution, and that would have got rid of the jaggedness on your DS games

      Honestly, the 35xx is still a great device. That form factor is great for retro handheld games, and unless Retro Achievements or Netplay are deal breakers for you, the base rg35xx is still a very capable device, especially with custom firmware.
      Right now, there aren't really isn't any fully featured custom firmware for the rg35xx plus and it will probably be a few months until we get to that point.
      All of this is to say, I love my 35xx, and look forward to when the 35xx plus will have custom firmware to make it more useful.

      i got the valve index, and i didnt use it for the first 6 months after buying it because the controllers literally didnt work and i had to send them back three times.
      why are you not using your device that works perfectly? pick 6 games, put them on it and start using it.

      Put that RG35XX to use. Put GarlicOS on it, slap some roms on there, and have some fun. I have a Miyoo Mini Plus, and I've been having a great time playing 8 and 16-bit titles on it, not to mention playing PS1 games on it. The 35XX has similar capabilities, so you should have a lot of fun with it.
