The Ayn Odin 2 Max and Pro are the most powerful retro handhelds that I've ever used. This Android based portable can play GameCube and PlayStation 2 VERY well, and even handle a surprising amount of Nintendo Switch games.

I will say one thing: Switch emulation can be popular because it allows people to apply mods to their games! To do that on an actual Switch, you either need a very, very early iteration of the Switch for a physical exploit, or to pay out the nose to add a modchip.

    • @kingupright

You need a modded switch to emulate and get support so. Seems worth it to me!, plus v1 switch consoles are super cheap nowadays

A big draw to me of the Odin 2 over a Steam Deck or ROG Ally is that it is an ARM device and thus has significantly better battery life when emulating PS2, GC, Switch, etc. I am also hopeful that through projects like Cassia we will see the ability to run Windows based x86 software through translation layers in the future.

But you miss out on the Steam Library.. There's so much more great stuff on there than just emulated games. I think that library adds a lot of value to the device. It even encludes pretty much all new Xbox titles and a good selection of ps4/ps5 titles like GoW and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

I think the only appealing aspect of having a console like this that can also do switch is that you don't have to mod a switch to do similar; and I feel like game wise, you'd want to do it to be able to run modded or hacked games.
Animal Crossing is one good example with a pretty good modding scene, but Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl has an amazing one. Because it was created in Unity, fans have been able to do all kinds of stuff to the game from fixing following pokemon, bugs, and removing the chibi-artstyle, to adding in every single pokemon across every generation including Scarlet and Violet, and adding back stuff like Mega Evolutions (as well as silly stuff like "play as kirby"). It's very cool to have that as something you can turn and play on the go... (but also kind of sad the game couldn't do all this stuff already). It really seems like Pokemon BDSP is going to become the future Pokemon Fire Red in terms of creating hacked games and fan projects.

The point this review is missing when comparing the Odin to a Steam Deck or other X86-handheld ist battery life and portability. The odin 2 weighs 35% less than the Steam Deck, is way smaller and has much better battery life. Hall-Effect sticks come on top. Switch emulation on Android is still in its infancy but the fact that as of writing the Odin 2 can handle Mario Kart, Mario Odyssey, Animal Crossing and basically any Indie Game flawlessly is remarkable. in a year or so it will basically be an adequate replacement for a switch. Without stick drift. The max variant of the Odin is too expensive, indeed, the pro model for 369 bucks might be the best deal in tech for emulation fans right now. By the way I love RetroGameCorps;-)

I mean with the size of it, it's more of a true handheld than the Switch. It looks like something I could actually tuck away in my pocket instead of having a extra accessory specifically for it like a bag or carrying case. The Switch Lite was such a waste of potential. They could've made something much smaller and maybe even have given it a nice clamshell design. You can technically take the Switch on the go, but it's nothing like a 3DS or a PSP. Unless you have really big pants, your Switch isn't going to fit in your pocket, especially with Joycons attached.

I will say also in the steam deck vs odin point. the battery life and screen resolution are other big factors for me. the steam deck is fine if u just wanna play something on the sofa or what not but the odin is a true road trip warrior. i was playing dark cloud 2 on the middle performance level at 1080 p (which really helps the text in that game) for about 2 hours. my steam deck would have been mostly dead by that point if not plugged in while the odin had only dropped 15%. that simply amazed me. also unless your goal is switch emulation the base odin is a really good deal. I have the pro and i honestly thing it is overkill for a lot of systems. I did notice there is a big difference between the base performance and the middle one. dolphin, aether, and duckstation at higher res were almost usable on base performance but ran perfect at 1080p wide screen hacks on in all 3. The only issue with aether is the bs with the dev. hopefully play! will get better.

..., OK so I have a switch and I gotta say I understand emulation and love it a lot. but is there really a point of emulating switch on android?, Cause like I understand the wanting to upscale and run at a locked 60 but that isn't really possible yet with most of the library of switch. Which leads me to think it's more for piracy :p, I recommend dumping your own keys from your modded switch whether it be a Mariko (v2/Lite) Aula (OLED), or erista (V1). It's surprisingly simple and almost anyone can do that without having to resort to piracy :)

    • @Bargate
      @Bargate 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yeah its pretty much just for piracy which is really sad. The only way you're pushing higher frames or resolution is on a much more expensive handheld like a rog or a pc even then the amount of performance you need to just get 60 on a game that runs on a old ass mobile chip is insane it really doesn't scale well. Honestly makes me wonder how long and what devices we will need to push into ps4 emulation as PS3 and 360 is already fairly high end for modern standards. Switch 2 is also going to likely going to be more powerful than a PS4 considering the steam deck is so I imagine switch 2 emulation will take a lot longer than og switch emulation.

Totally on board with the Switch emulation thoughts. When I was in school I totally would have been tweaking on it for hours "because I can" even if I had a Switch. But now that I'm in my 30s and have too much stuff to do, I just want to play games and not waste time screwing around making things work. I pretty much play all Nintendo games on real Nintendo hardware because everything else so far is a compromise. A real Switch just works, and everything I've seen/tried so far for DS emulation is so much worse than just using a DS.
I do have some of my PS2 and GameCube collection on my Steam Deck for convenience and if I don't want to go to the TV. Something like this would be cool for something smaller and lighter, and way longer battery life if you're not planning on playing bigger PC games on the go.

@@pistolao_vr Who's going to game on a handheld for more than a 2 to 3 hour session anyway? The Steam Deck gets anywhere from 3-7 hours of battery life whenever emulating games (dependant on emulator). It's not exactly what I class as being an insufficient amount for most people. Hell, access to being able to play AAA PC games, having a fully functional PC and being able to play 80% of Switch games fairly flawlessly on the Steam Deck (far more so than on the Odin), is in itself probably worth paying out an extra $150-$200 for those privileges. However, the fact that the 256GB LCD Steam Deck can now be picked up for £100 less than the Aya Odin 2 here in the UK, just turns the whole decision, into an instant "no brainer". Hell, you could even pick up a Retroid Pocket 2S alongside that Steam Deck and still come in under the £450 price of a Aya Odin 2. The Odin 2 is just too expensive for what it is. If it was a £250 - £300 handheld, then it would be one hell of a good deal and likely a must buy. However at £450 it just gets outclassed and bitch slapped by both the Steam Deck and the Z1 Ally, which are both in the same ballpark on price.
BTW, I've also got a feeling the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro due out next month for $200, will make the Odin 2 look terrible in comparison (around 75% it's performance for well under half the cost)

I don't see it as particularly practical for on the go gaming. It is more powerful though and will play "modern" PC games. It's more suited to gaming on the couch or somewhere like a hotel room or a relative's house. The Odin on the other hand is smaller, quieter, and has a better battery life. In my opinion, it's right on the edge of practicality for gaming on the go. It's large, but still small enough that it's not a chore to take it with you when you're on the go. It's perfect if you just want to play some N64 or Gamecube games while you're out of the house. It just depends on what you want.
Personally, I wish I could get something with the power of the Odin 2, but in the footprint of a 3DS XL. Something you could reasonably fit in your pocket. I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon though, so I might just pick up the Odin 2 or the pro version.

But I definitely love the idea of upscaling PS2 and NGC games, and even use a handheld as a console to plug to TV: that's the main reason why I would consider an Odin2 (and also because it seems great with controls and ergonomics).
