E-Ink screens have notoriously slow refresh rates, so what if there was one that could refresh FAST ENOUGH to be able to play games on? Well, it leaves you with something that turns pretty much any game into a Game Boy game...

babe, wake up, bob found a gaming kindle
*gets up, goes through the process of making a whole cup of coffee, lets it cool down, lays back down, drinks it and spits it out* WHAT
😂
Kintendo*
I hacked my kindle Paperwhite a while ago, it can** run doom.
@@AnotherFreakingDudedude that’s awesome! Is it fun to use?! 😮
The white version has a plastic screen, the black is glass and much more responsive. They don’t tell you
So you're saying we need another video with lots of comparisons?
I'm in
That's bad for so many reasons. They just don't tell you on the site?
You have got to be kidding me.
I'd rather they kept it plastic. Glass in front of an eink screen sorta defeats the eye comfort side of the technology because now you have to deal with the glare of the glass too. And usually you want eink displays to catch light directly for when not using a frontlight
Not if the display is matt@@MrScottyTay
one thing that should be corrected is that the Palma is not a smartphone. There is no cellular or SIM capability in the device. The more accurate thing to call it would be a smartphone sized android powered e-reader
Hisense sells some that are full fledged smartphones, color e-ink ones too! I have been rocking an a5 pro cc as my daily driver phone. The colour e-ink does sacrifice some resolution compared to the classic monochrome one but it is still super impressive!
@@StandardTacticalKnight yes, but the framerate is abysmal compared with the Palma. If its the same as in the Boox Tab Ultra, then it has a dedicated GPU to improve the framerate
iPod
I don't think it really matters though. You can still call people on it with various apps using WiFi. You can even call landlines with Google Voice.
ipod touch but android
I love Bob’s genuinely frustrated energy in the Factor ad lmao
YA HUNGRY⁉️⁉️⁉️🗣🗣🗣
It was a funny bit, but being on speakers, I found it a little annoying the second time xD
@@YeetMiser0117 That had me rolling, omg 😅😂
Might be my favorite ad read of all time.
@@KegaB3 the only negative factor is the services itself
This unhinged, chaotic factor ad may be my favorite
It reminded me of some of game grumps better ad reads. This was probably the best I've ever seen tho that shit was hilarious
definitely not for the weak hearted
How could you not try Paper Mario on this? :D
Also, this is not a smartphone. No SIM support, no GPS, which I know as I wanted one for Pokemon Go in summer. Hisense has an A series of actual E-ink phones but those are not available everywhere as easily
also no Playstore, supposed chinese spycrap... - but I loved my A2 until I dumped it in water ... 😭
I have been rocking an e-ink smartphone for a few years now! The hisense a5 pro cc is my daily driver phone, and it actually has a colour e-ink display too!
The singular of Hertz is Hertz, since it is named after Heinrich Hertz
Came to say this. The z isn't a slang version of s.
@@sebastienr7852 You Hert my feelingz
No you’re wrong, the abbreviation is (Hz) and is still said to be Hertz Z is not a plural. It’s a measurement lol smooth brain comment
@@holy_lettuce Am I missing a potentially removed comment here? Cause you're saying what they're saying. So the "smooth brain comment" part feels... Ironic to say the least
@@magemor7827 yeah there was a comment where someone was saying it’s 1 hert not 1 Hertz trying to correct Bob in the video then we all commented after that. I think they deleted the comment cause I can not find it
Literally just bought this last week for reading on the go. Never did I even consider emulating on this thing. 😂
This is the best factor ad I've ever seen.
After that Factor 5 ad now I want to see Bob do some infomercials
Some of the CLEANEST device shots I've seen from you yet in this video! Wow! That first shot especially was soo satisfying!
I would actually love one of this as a daily driver, I already use my hacked kindle for linux terminal stuff, chess, sudoku, etc. This makes it even better.
I have an old paperwhiter with nand problem, I can still uses it for something? battery is still good, and works normaly but the storage can't save stuff.
@@apoenaferraz3512 sounds weird, maybe using a flasher from the Kubrick live CD, reinstalling the whole OS could fix it if it's only a software problem.
Bruh, I literally did not know this tech existed. I was just looking at E-Ink tablet type things about a month ago and was really disappointed at the mega slow refresh rates, but SUDDENLY, with literally ZERO warning, bob uploads.
Wtf, bro
I love how creative you are with your sponsor spots! It is much more engaging than the typical ad read
Nintendo are gonna see this and release the 'New Gameboy'
Imagine if the Switch 2 was like this.
@@Armando_Aranda I'd buy iy
I've always wanted a Gameboy-styled screen as an *accessory* for modern handhelds. It could connect to something like the Switch or Steam Deck over the USB-C port. People always complain about the GBA's screen, but they never talk about how it's the only screen you CAN see when you're out in bright sunlight. An accessory would be good for this sort of purpose.
And they can sell an external light that plugs into the usb for playing in the dark 😂
@@SlamNFunc This phone and the first GBA-SP model both a have a solution to this; They light the screens from the front when you need it.
It's not a smartphone, it doesn't have a SIM card.
Display also isn't "binary black and white". You can display more than two shades in a pixel.
does he know that people willingly take cards out of phones for a alternative more identity protecting method
silly simple Wuff
16 shades of gray, specifically.
Technically it's all still binary 🤓
@@senritsujumpsuit6021Huh? What are you trying to say?
@@user-vi4xy1jw7e you can take out your sim card thous cutting of pretty much all pathways to your data
Reminds me of my childhood, used a black & white 13" TV from Atari 2600 thru PS1
Bob became Billy Mays in the heat of the moment lol 😂
That plug-in for the sponsor was wild 😂
I swear I love watching Bob's vids but Genuinely smile whenever he does ads (any chance that you'd upload all of them as separate vids?) always enjoyed when you did the shouted YAHUNGRY discount code loudly 🤣
p.s. shout-out for Pocket Bomberman Hell Yeah!
this with a colored backlight would be so cool, also any turn based games will be perfect
Loved this intro Bob! Always a pleasure to watch your videos!
I love the YAHUNGRY50 yell , gets me everytime 😂😂
I have loved eink for over a decade when I got a gen 1 kindle as a gift. I just so happened to get myself a Palma for my birthday and I’m so much more excited about the purchase after seeing this
I've been using the boox palma for a while now to read books before bed and stop doom scrolling, been great honestly and I love that it's phone sized. Also very impressed with it's refresh rates, playing gba on this is for crazy people though lol as awesome as it looks, there's no need to because the battery life won't match up since it has to update all the time, and battery life is the reason I love e ink devices and miss my pebble watch.
Im waiting for Bob to do a video ad on factor where he’s traveling and climbing with no narration up a mountain and once he gets to the top of the mountain, he yells YAAAA HUNGRRRYY!
I love the Boox Palma I just wish it came with LTE so I could use it as a weekend phone or for digital detox. Never in a million years would I have thought someone would make it into a gaming handheld. Looks great!
Look into Hisense A9 or their older models A5 and A7
bob ur cinematography is getting insane, keep up the good work
I love this because I had the pebble watch which was a similar screen but had 8 bit colour so that would be a neat follow up
The emergence of color e-ink is now intriguing on a whole new level.
A good replacement for the Razer Junglecat that works with any phone is the -Beitong Betop H2 Controller-. It has a telescopic case that can fit any phone, and it also cames with a joycon style grip so you can play with it further away while the phone is "docked".
The controller also comes with a 2.4ghz adapter so you can play on you PC wirelessly over usb. This controller is amazing and its a shame no one gives it the praises it deserves.
Hey, TH-cam? Ya HUN-GRY?!?!?!
I was wondering about this, thank you for this video.
You are so cursed, Bob
Those wet blinks gave me strong Tim and Eric skit vibes haha awesome
That Factor ad was the entire video for me 💖💖😂😂🤣🤣
this is the perfect balance of analog feel and smartphone! I need them to create one that allows for texts and calls and I am sold on this as a replacement phone
the glass chips being in factors meals never gets in the way of a spicy sponsorship huh
ive been playing my old sp outdoors lately. as cool as it is to have a proper backlight with vivid colours; i actually have a soft spot for consoles that don’t have a backlight.
this thing awesome, and if the palma had a sim card slot i’d definitely make an attempt to daily drive this
I have an original GBA and I've been thinking about getting a first edition SP for a while, since it keeps the reflective screen and just adds a light to it. For most people it's something to complain about since the colors aren't as good or something, but it sounds awesome to me.
@@hahasamian8010 we're in the same boat then!
yeah either a gba, first gen gba sp, or an og ds lite will scratch that itch; that way you have options in case you cant get your hands on a first gen gba sp for whatever reason
@@seedofstun AAA I DID NOT KNOW THE ORIGINAL DS HAS A... someone in forums is calling it a "transflective" screen...? It's interesting, they say this and the GB Micro both have a screen type that's backlit but will still reflect sunlight! Pretty cool...!
Now I might have too many options though, ahah.... I was thinking the next thing I'd pick up would be one of those original SP's, but now the DS is pretty tempting...!
I wish someone would make one of these screens as an attachable accessory for Switch or Steam Deck. I love my Steam Deck but it just doesn't work good in the sunlight... Same for my 2DS, so I'm assuming the same for a Switch.
@@hahasamian8010 same!! omg
This is such a cool concept! Had not thought of this use case. If there is a Gen 2 Palma I may try this out. I would love if the Palma added Wacom Stylus Support.
Try this in the Note Air 3C now. 😅😅 great video, liked and subscribed. I love this e-ink devices.
I think you might be interested trying this on the TCL 40 NXTPaper phone. It's actually just a regular phone but they made this special matte coating for the screen that makes it look and feel just like an e-ink display but give you the full refresh rate of a normal phone screen
I really, REALLY want this as a fan of e-readers. I am astounded that Bob enjoyed the device, since most tech youtubers don't get that it is an e-reader, and isn't necesarily trying to be an all in one replacement for your phone.
Thanks Bob for a new perspective on a device I was considering getting just to use as an e-reader and maybe for social media consumption late at night.
Now I think I have to get one to play old Gameboy games on. 😅
This makes me so excited although I never ever wanna play games like this
why many games have no point of full colors I would gladly go on a blazing sunny day nailing some rounds
I did something similar with a 7 inch eink android e-reader. Gameboy games were magical. Especially Tetris for some reason.
Very cool video!! I have been putting all my devices in black and white and utilizing a anti glare screen protector. So I know exactly what you mean about it really mixing things up and making it more interesting! - its also more enjoyable when you do switch back to color. Love the content!
Always a good day when bobbo puts up a video. Bobbo!
I own one of these. Love using it for social media and reading news and Kindle books on the go. Never thought of playing emulated games on it though. Might have to give it a go.
lol that factor ad sounds like something STRAIGHT out of interdimensional cable
A Razer Kishi/Gamevice would also work in the place of the Junglecat, presuming you have a centered USB-C port and are running the phone in a protective case to ensure a snug fit, instead of the rubber bumper things it comes with. Beyond that, this video was a good watch and the concept of gaming on e-ink is wild!
I had to go see if there were any color E-Ink devices, they exist, now I know. I am kind of interested in the future of those devices now, love where they are going. Great video.
you're doing a really good job on the grading, always. no need to apologize. maybe that's even your future career after youtube
This might be the best ad you’ve done yet
I can smell anbernic announcing rg ink sometime this week
Ever since getting the Super Note tablet for note taking and ebook reading, I fell in love with modern e-ink screens. Much better and pleasant to use than the palm top devices back in the 90s, and less eye straining compared to using computers or phones.
Hoping this is the first of many phones and gaming devices to use e-ink tech and take it even farther.
I was just looking for something like this a couple weeks ago. Would love a tablet with color eInk. Hoping that tech makes more progress soon.
One of the best ads you’ve done
I blame Bob for how I yell at my dogs at supper time by yelling YA HUNGRY?!?!
I have a Hisense Touch and I just use it to read books at the park and listen to music. There are some other models you can get all aliexpress where the seller puts google services on and english firmware for you. Its cool seeing this form factor being readily available to US market though. The plastic screen is often preferred, as reading with matte looks more like a book and it has less glare.
We need a campaign to get this channel to 1 million by New Years.
It's crazy how even though I know the display is in black and white, I can swear I still see these games in color.
The ad part was amazing
You can switch on the monochrome mode for display at any android phone and it will be the same view but better performance.
I'm getting a TCL NXTPAPER soon. Wondering how that would look playing old games.
Love this Idea this Bigme E ink Smartphone Hibreak Is e ink colour going follow ya advice with turn based games i think
Bob, did you know there's a setting on the switch that turns everything grayscale? It also allows you to invert colors if you get bored of grayming
That's really cool. I've wanted an e-ink screen ever since I saw the first Kindle in person. They're gorgeous to look at... just not practical for many things.
When you said the screen ran at 20hz, I immediately thought of the legend of zelda games on N64 because they also run at 20fps natively. Would have loved to see footage of the game on this screen
Bob is a true renaissance man
I'm curious how good it feels with retroarch's run-ahead latency reduction
We evolved from "Can it run Doom?" To "Can it run Crysis?" To "Can it run retro emulators?"
That ad was the best I've ever seen on TH-cam, period.
I would totally get this if it had a SIM card slot in it and was compatible with my Cell Service.
you could also just play with a b&w filter applied... but still.. bravo for trying something new. very cool.
Using iOS's Color filters accessibility options allow you to monochrome out the entire screen/ui without any of the screen refresh drawbacks. Also the ability to reduce the whitepoint of the entire display to get lower than the typical lowest brightness setting on the iPhone.
Love this kinda wild stuff from Bob!
I love the idea here and would definitely consider buying an e-ink style vertical handheld from Anbernic or similar competitor. It could great battery life, I think, and be cool for GB games. I enjoy this kind of proof of concept video.
12:56 This is at the ROG ALLY X event in New York btw.
Imagine a 60hz version that still manages similar battery life, and lasts for multiple days, I would totally consider that.
Can’t you make your phone go black and white inverted colours or something like that
How did you calculate the input lag to ms delay? Is that based on if you recorded in 60 or 30?
Mario 64 running in b&w is nostalgic. I first played the n64 when we got it for xmas the release year. And we just had a handmedown b&w tv in my bedroom. With weird antenna crab claw connector thing to hook it up to. Played mario 64 on that the first couple months.
What I think this thing would actually be insanely cool for is like any kind of interactive fiction. Classic 70s text adventure games like Zork, Curses, etc. or even MUDs. Sorcery would be a great fit. If it has audio visual novels could also be rad.
Lmao I got jump scared by bob in his own video 🤣
ever since i heard of the boox palma, this is exactly what i was curious about
I would pick this up so fast if they made one with that power (or ideally a slight power boost, closer to 30hz) in the typical kindle formfactor.
Kinda love the idea of this, but a touch faster on the screen would be nice (like 30hz)
I think this would look AWESOME with the old Hyperkin "smartboy" controller. It's USB-C right?
Whoa... that's crazy!
I am a huge fan of e-ink, I would use it a lot for visual novels, turn based RPGs, and of course books and mangás. Maybe a bigger screen version?
I really miss the old reflective tft lcd screens, never hurt my eyes and worked great outdoors under sunlight.
I've been wanting this thing for a while, but mostly because it's a pocketable e-reader. I never once stopped to consider it could be used for emulation.
I'm still waiting for a pocketable color e-ink variant, though.
1:39 Ah yes, Sonic Jam on Game Com
Well this changed my perception on e-ink tech. I own the Boox tab ultra c and maybe I might reconsider gaming on it.
Was really hoping to see the Hyperkin Smart boy on it, seems like it'd be the perfect device for it
this is cool. thanks bro
That reminds me, there is this company called "Daylight" that will be releasing an eInk device with a much higher refresh rate than this one later this year
Going to be interesting how that one will fare
what about the TCL NXTPAPER devices, they're LCDs that are tuned to feel like paper. it's a transflective LCD.
