I'd rather they kept it plastic. Glass in front of an eink screen sorta defeats the eye comfort side of the technology because now you have to deal with the glare of the glass too. And usually you want eink displays to catch light directly for when not using a frontlight
one thing that should be corrected is that the Palma is not a smartphone. There is no cellular or SIM capability in the device. The more accurate thing to call it would be a smartphone sized android powered e-reader
Hisense sells some that are full fledged smartphones, color e-ink ones too! I have been rocking an a5 pro cc as my daily driver phone. The colour e-ink does sacrifice some resolution compared to the classic monochrome one but it is still super impressive!

I've always wanted a Gameboy-styled screen as an *accessory* for modern handhelds. It could connect to something like the Switch or Steam Deck over the USB-C port. People always complain about the GBA's screen, but they never talk about how it's the only screen you CAN see when you're out in bright sunlight. An accessory would be good for this sort of purpose.
I would actually love one of this as a daily driver, I already use my hacked kindle for linux terminal stuff, chess, sudoku, etc. This makes it even better.

I've been using the boox palma for a while now to read books before bed and stop doom scrolling, been great honestly and I love that it's phone sized. Also very impressed with it's refresh rates, playing gba on this is for crazy people though lol as awesome as it looks, there's no need to because the battery life won't match up since it has to update all the time, and battery life is the reason I love e ink devices and miss my pebble watch.

What I think this thing would actually be insanely cool for is like any kind of interactive fiction. Classic 70s text adventure games like Zork, Curses, etc. or even MUDs. Sorcery would be a great fit. If it has audio visual novels could also be rad.
ive been playing my old sp outdoors lately. as cool as it is to have a proper backlight with vivid colours; i actually have a soft spot for consoles that don’t have a backlight. this thing awesome, and if the palma had a sim card slot i’d definitely make an attempt to daily drive this
I have an original GBA and I've been thinking about getting a first edition SP for a while, since it keeps the reflective screen and just adds a light to it. For most people it's something to complain about since the colors aren't as good or something, but it sounds awesome to me.

A good replacement for the Razer Junglecat that works with any phone is the -Beitong Betop H2 Controller-. It has a telescopic case that can fit any phone, and it also cames with a joycon style grip so you can play with it further away while the phone is "docked". The controller also comes with a 2.4ghz adapter so you can play on you PC wirelessly over usb. This controller is amazing and its a shame no one gives it the praises it deserves.
Ever since getting the Super Note tablet for note taking and ebook reading, I fell in love with modern e-ink screens. Much better and pleasant to use than the palm top devices back in the 90s, and less eye straining compared to using computers or phones. Hoping this is the first of many phones and gaming devices to use e-ink tech and take it even farther.
A Razer Kishi/Gamevice would also work in the place of the Junglecat, presuming you have a centered USB-C port and are running the phone in a protective case to ensure a snug fit, instead of the rubber bumper things it comes with. Beyond that, this video was a good watch and the concept of gaming on e-ink is wild!

I think you might be interested trying this on the TCL 40 NXTPaper phone. It's actually just a regular phone but they made this special matte coating for the screen that makes it look and feel just like an e-ink display but give you the full refresh rate of a normal phone screen

I have a Hisense Touch and I just use it to read books at the park and listen to music. There are some other models you can get all aliexpress where the seller puts google services on and english firmware for you. Its cool seeing this form factor being readily available to US market though. The plastic screen is often preferred, as reading with matte looks more like a book and it has less glare.
Hisense also sells eInk smartphones/tablets with Android on it *AND* some of them come in color eInk or a regular screen + an eInk screen like the YotaPhone did. Color eInk is probably the best of both worlds

Using iOS's Color filters accessibility options allow you to monochrome out the entire screen/ui without any of the screen refresh drawbacks. Also the ability to reduce the whitepoint of the entire display to get lower than the typical lowest brightness setting on the iPhone.
That's really cool. I've wanted an e-ink screen ever since I saw the first Kindle in person. They're gorgeous to look at... just not practical for many things.
I own one of these. Love using it for social media and reading news and Kindle books on the go. Never thought of playing emulated games on it though. Might have to give it a go.
I've always been intrigued with E-Ink displays. I've always wanted a colored e-ink phone (with optional backlight) because I am not a gamer and could use the extra battery life. Minimal Phone came so close to what I've wanted aside from the lack of color e-ink, but I worry it's vaporware. They're supposedly shipping in august, but they haven't even solidified a design.
If you just want a black and white effect, I'm sure there are shaders you can apply in most emulators. However, the possibility of a phone with an all-week battery charge appeals to me as I probably only make a call once a week anyhow and would want to use it as just a phone. Of course, I could also see myself playing FFT on there, and maybe FF7, but it does make me curious as to how much the battery gets drained by playing games. If I could play FFT for 4 hours without having to worry about draining the battery, that would get me buying one of these today.
The SNES is old enough that people where still playing it on small black and white tvs when it came out. At least I remember a few friends doing that when they got their SNES

That's really cool. I've wanted an e-ink screen ever since I saw the first Kindle in person. They're gorgeous to look at... just not practical for many things.
I own one of these. Love using it for social media and reading news and Kindle books on the go. Never thought of playing emulated games on it though. Might have to give it a go.

I've always been intrigued with E-Ink displays. I've always wanted a colored e-ink phone (with optional backlight) because I am not a gamer and could use the extra battery life.
Minimal Phone came so close to what I've wanted aside from the lack of color e-ink, but I worry it's vaporware. They're supposedly shipping in august, but they haven't even solidified a design.

If you just want a black and white effect, I'm sure there are shaders you can apply in most emulators. However, the possibility of a phone with an all-week battery charge appeals to me as I probably only make a call once a week anyhow and would want to use it as just a phone. Of course, I could also see myself playing FFT on there, and maybe FF7, but it does make me curious as to how much the battery gets drained by playing games. If I could play FFT for 4 hours without having to worry about draining the battery, that would get me buying one of these today.

The SNES is old enough that people where still playing it on small black and white tvs when it came out.

Mario 64 running in b&w is nostalgic. I first played the n64 when we got it for xmas the release year. And we just had a handmedown b&w tv in my bedroom. With weird antenna crab claw connector thing to hook it up to. Played mario 64 on that the first couple months.

With the backbone it looks like the coolest handheld ever made. Companies really don't understand how cool a white frame would be. I would just download a billion pokemon fire red romhacks and just play those on there.
