Okay, hear me out -- the big grey collar is an homage to 17th century lace collars and the paintbrush is a nod to the great Dutch painters of the time. Imagine the conversation! "I went to the Rijksmuseum this weekend and it got me thinking how can we honor the Golden Age of Dutch painting with our knitting?" "Oh, I know! How about a giant knitted ruff but we stick a paintbrush in it instead of a brooch?" "Oh, yes, I'm sure everyone will understand our sophisticated cultural reference and not think that the model looks ridiculous."
Loved the silly pictures. What a throwback! I was born in 1970 so all those vintage magazines fall right within the range of what I remember perusing with my mother and grandmother. I remember even then, we’d some times think “fun but… nope.” Or: “What the heck are they THINKING?” Especially about the models and poses. Thanks for the laughs. I’m already looking forward to what you’re going to come up with next!
Thank you for a lovely trip down the more eccentric sections of memory lane. I think the big thing about the latter 1960s and the 1970s was that people wanted to experiment with new ideas. Some of the ideas worked and some, perhaps, didn't.
I wore fancy knit socks over my pabts in the 80s. Firstly, the jeans were too tight to wear socks under them. Secondky, over the knee socks felt like pirate boots.
Mum used to have a pair of wildly patterned socks like that in the 1970's, the ones she had came with individual toes as well, they later became Christmas stockings for my brother and I.
Ah, imagining the stories behind silly staged catalog pictures - I love it. Should definitively become a segment 😅 There is a blog that does it with interior design photography (Unhappy hipsters?). I couldn't find the equivalent Unhappy knitters though. Or we could call that Ecstatic Knitters.
Hi Jente, I hope you're OK, I hope your ankle is getting better xx ❣️❣️❣️❣️ Thankyou so much for sharing this video podcast. I think those Socks over Jeans are possibly Leg Warmers as they were worn in late 70's into mid 80's. If you're vintage then I guess, that I must be ancient, I'll be 70 in 3mths. Here in the Chicago area we are in the middle of an emergence of 17-year periodical cicadas and it is terrible and disgusting. So I, for one, think socks over pants is probably a really good idea.
@@VultureSkins We are! The downside of periodical cicadas is that they all come out at once and it’s so gross, but the upside is they’re only around for a couple months once every 17 years. So we’re off the hook now until the next time.
what fun! now i have to go dig thru my craft room and look at vintage magazines gf! thanks for the reminder...cant wait to see u doing the tour de fleece. i might do this too but not actually join online.
Yesterday found a box knitting/crochet patterns been looking for since moved here 15 years ago. Some are from 1930! The hats are insane and the knit suits are sized for anorexic children. Found the pattern I wanted in Better Homes and gardens from October 1977 which was cover and googleable. I wore the cowl looser and probably shorter, sleeves were 3/4 no cuff. Sucker was acrylic and so warm didn't need coat pithed it in 2005 as was fatter than good fit. Found directions that came with tabard kit from 70s and strted knitting it in alpaca (remember have a lot) so not trendy but good layering piece going ing and out of heart. Whole book of bedspreads...no way but remember seeing some at great aunt's. Made me feel connected here in Illinois albeit ancient.
This is so true, I have many early 2000s knitting magazines which have such silly looking garments in them. At the same time, I can imagine someone wearing them in eaely 2000s(not saying early 2000s are vintage btw!)
(Technically early 2000s are vintage if we take 20 years as the minimum age?) Oh yes, I didn't include them in this video, but I have some magazines from 2006-2007 where I question the fashion choices even more than in the ones from the 70s-80s...
Well, I am also apparently "vintage" and I'm not sure I'm okay with that? 🤔😵💫😅 I just taught some drop spindlers, spinners? spindle spinners? (help?? 🤷♀what is a good term...what do we like?) about plying bracelets over the weekend! Thank you Jente for introducing them to me. But now I must ask - do you ever chain ply on the fly with your spindles? I know you like the supported ones more, and chain ply on the fly needs a little "nubbin" to hold onto the loop. So it just got me thinking if you do it or not!
Your first magazine is early 80s, maybe 1982… the second one is more towards the 70s, I think. Large collar is also early 80s. How I know? Hm, I’m around long enough to have pictures of me wearing similar styles. 😆
Cool magazines! I like the idea of this video, but the moving camera is uncomfortable for me to watch. Would you consider having a stationary camera in future videos?
Not going to lie: I think that giant collar looks awesome. However, I'm pretty sure it would need some sort of stiffening to keep it in place, otherwise it would just drape over your shoulders.
Snoods. You either had one or you wanted one (even attached to your jumper). I don't remember anyone actually knowing how to wear them for more than 5 minutes without being irritating!
U heeft gelijk, Suske en Wiske verdienen meer eerbied, hahaha. Groeten uit Rotterdam. You are so right, Suske and Wiske deserve better treatment then that, greetings from Rotterdam.
oh that was funny. that huge big collar with the paintbrush - I immediately pictured one of those angry lizards that blows up its neck collar, and then, those jurassic rhino type creatures in Avatar - its like " don't touch my paintbrush ! I will get angry" and *woeffff* up jumps your enormous collar. And the genuinely angry red hat girl and her sister picking her nose - I snortd with laughter - BUT as funny as these pictures were, isn't it nice to see adverts that are not all about sex and huge butts and boobs and bored, bad attitude, anorexic models pretending to eat an olive pit with huge pouty fish lips that are covered in sticky scratchy blue glitter, wearing only a black jumper that looks like its been fed thru a corn harvesting machine and it only costs $5000, because its made from sustainable (?) organic (?) palm fronds harvested in the borneo jungles by pygmy children (no animals harmed in the process). sorry for the loooong message, its been raining here for 5 days - I've got cabin fever 😂😂
This is an insulting and irrelevant video. Your mocking is very sad. Your modern designs that charge outrageous prices for their patterns go through patterns going back into the 60s and copy the patterns that you are mocking. You are making fun of patterns thatt are selling for $12 on ravelry. Grow up!
Hi, I feel like there has been a misunderstanding. I am not maliciously mocking vintage patterns. The reason why I have so many is because I love them and love knitting them. You will never hear me say modern patterns are better. However, I wanted to have some lighthearted Fun looking at the staging of these pictures. If that isn't for you, that's ok. Also, I believe growing up is optional.

That would make sense. However it would be much more clear if it were white?
I was thinking less Dutch painters and more Padme Amidala.

That's fashion in a nutshell, probably
that collar with the paintbrush in it reminds me of a frill neck lizard.
It would be great if you could open it dramatically like the lizard can
@@MijnWolden I would legitimately make and wear that ALL THE TIME if that was possible
I wore fancy knit socks over my pabts in the 80s. Firstly, the jeans were too tight to wear socks under them. Secondky, over the knee socks felt like pirate boots.
Pirate boots are cool
The glasses on the hat remind me of the mustaches on everything trend circa 2012(?)
Yeah! What a great comparison :D
Mum used to have a pair of wildly patterned socks like that in the 1970's, the ones she had came with individual toes as well, they later became Christmas stockings for my brother and I.
Oh I remember toe-socks having a comeback moment in the early 2000s...
Looking forward to seeing your tour de fleeece videos!
I'm looking forward to the tour too :)

Vintage goes up until 100, after that you're antique ;)
A charity shop near me has loads of vintage patterns. I bought 2 I didn't need because the children on the front looked so haunted

Cicada repellent socks... probably not something Dutch knitting designers thought of, but hey, if it works...
Hope you guys are doing okay after all that 😬

Such a fun episode! And my dad totally had a man bag in the 70's!

oh, one of the 1970s ones I have has a tabard pattern too, and the colours look like very alpaca to me
I remember wanting the sweater mitten thing . Lol Are you going to organize a tour de fleece team? That would be fun.
I'm not really organising a team. But just like last year I'm doing some fun shenanigans with my patrons over on our discord server.

You haven’t seen ridiculous poses until you’ve seen Brunswick pattern books from the late 1970s to 1980s.
Now I'm curious...
The big cowl people are transforming into the worms of Dune
oh my, that's scary
Cool magazines! I like the idea of this video, but the moving camera is uncomfortable for me to watch. Would you consider having a stationary camera in future videos?
As you saw, I tried, but couldn't really find a way to put it.
Honestly I'd wear that giant collar.
Just. Without the paintbrush.
Sensible thoughts
