Knitting a pair of Victorian Gloves out of dog wool from a historic knitting manual

  • Hello friends! Tell me I'm not the only one with slight Cruella Deville intentions when seeing a flooffy dog... So that is why in this video we will attempt knit a pair of Victorian or Edwardian gloves with the lace weight chiengora yarn we made earlier. You may or may not have noticed that my personal style is greatly influenced by historical and vintage fashion. You can find that video when following this link: • Can I spin a lace yarn...
    Chiengora, or dog wool, is said to be up to 80% warmer than sheep's wool. So gloves are the ideal project to keep my extremities warm this coming winter. We will knit these lady's gloves as per original and historic instructions of the victorian or edwardian period. I found the "Second book of 'Hows': or what may be done with wools in every home" on the internet archive. (For those of you who want to knit your own historic reconstruction garments, here's a link: archive.org/de... ). This knitting and crochet manual was published in 1902, making it technically edwardian. But as the gloves pattern refers to an earlier one, published in 1900 I will call them victorian. In any case, join me on this project where we attempt to knit a turn of the century pair of gloves with dog wool!
    Some people say dog yarns smell like wet dog, but it is the dog that makes a dog smell like wet dog, not its fur. So when processed into yarn, it does not smell. Or that is at least my experience with it.
    Is there any historic reference to victorians and edwardians knitting their gloves or other knitwear with dog wool? Well, no. But there are also no references that they didn't. So maybe this project isn't entirely historically accurate, but it is at least historically possible!

    Friends! I'm sorry if the music starting at the reveal now is jarringly loud... I got had to change the music because someone claimed it as theirs. My appeal was rejected, and I feel worried for any implications not changing the music might have for my channel, so I swapped the music, but I couldn't change the volume in TH-cam Studio. So, apologies if anyone got spooked by the volume change.

      Heads up, the link to the pattern in your description is broken or inactive.
      (correction edit: it is broken, the closing parenthesis causes an error but without it opens as intended)

    Those gloves look nice and warm, ideal for these temperatures! I am thinking of knitting some mittens, but making them really big and felting them, so they are even warmer.

    You definitely have grandma energy but that's 100% a compliment. Chaos goblin grandma.
    The gloves are really nice!! And it's kind of a neat way to use the fur you'd end up collecting anyway.
    I love the look of items knitted on tiny needles but my shaky hands could never. So I'll enjoy it through you.

    I had two Great Pyrenees who passed summer 2022 at 11 yrs old, littermates, and I miss them so much. But I saved their undercoats when they were young from brushing them out. I plan to spin it up and I like your idea of gloves. Was going to blend with some sheeps wool but I like the idea of just being able to 'feel' them better if I leave the wool out. Do your gloves 'feel' like your pup?

    • @MijnWolden
      @MijnWolden  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not sure I would say it feels exactly like our dog, but the gloves were in my pocket today when I was out for my day job and I found myself stroking or petting the gloves. I once tried to spin her fur pure and made a hat out of it and that was very pup-like. But that yarn wasn't very sturdy and gave way After a while, that's mainly why I blended it with wool now

    • @leahgroess5361
      @leahgroess5361 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe spin enough to knit a little swatch to just have as your "petting square". If it's not a garment it won't have as much repeated stretching and rubbing to cause the yarn to wear out. Blending with wool also lets your fur go much farther in terms of how much you need, so you'd be able to knit something bigger, or more items if it was blended.
