Big Early Season Walleye and Trout - Flexi Jigs and Live Minnow T-Turn Rigs

- Hello folks, today is a great day. It's the first day we're able to get back out onto the (non-frozen) water - and boy did we have a great day!
We geared up with our trusty flexi-jigs with artificial bait fish, and t-turn rigs with live minnows. It didn't take long before we were heavy into the fish - both big lake trout and walleye!
The water was about 32°F or 0°C, and the lake trout and walleye were hitting hard.
It was a fantastic day back.

My hands are freezing just watching you guys, Don't know how you handle it in all these winter fishing videos. I am always trying to figure out a way to fish and keep my hands from the cold.
+Thomas Bridges ...the key thing Thomas is to keep them dry - makes a huge difference - there's also a product called hot hands, which are mini packets which give off heat :)

Great to see the boat in action again... yes its a indescribable feeling to set the hook in a big fish compared to a small with a ice rod fishing... what was wrong with the first walleye? Actually looks bigger to me than the rest at least it does to me... anyway seems like you guys had a great day... hope you can have many more....
They likely released it because it was too big, generally people who harvest fish will prefer a medium sized fish, the big ones are released to help keep the population healthy, that big walleye has some great genes to pass on to the future generation of walleye in the niagara river

Hi Ivo! Here is another good way to fry those fish! The Hungarian way!
Mix up the flour with a pinch of salt and add paprika. Put as much paprika in it, so the flour is kinda pinkish from it.Roll the fish in there.
Fry it to golden-reddish brown.
You can add more or less, there is no rule how much you add.
Some folks add more, others add less paprika.
If you are a tough guy, you could try to get your hands on some hot paprika instead of sweet, it will definitely give a kick to it!

I love watching all your videos as always. I saw that you where wearing gloves that looked like mitts but also had finger covers. And I assume they are a little waterproof. I really could use a pair of those for early Erie fishing. What are they and where to buy them

Ivo, great video! Btw, you mentioned lampreys in this video. What do they do to the fish in the Great Lakes?
Hi Eric - there are more lampreys in Lake Ontario than in Lake Erie and they basically affix themselves to the side of a fish and feed off of them, sucking their blood. There mouth is like a suction cup.

Nice vid guys. did you use an electric motor or drag a chain because your drift looked really slow.
HI Fred - always great to hear from you :) We drifted most of the day but we also ended up anchoring for about 30 minutes. Also, in that area, there is a back eddy and the current is not as strong, so we never even got my electric motor wet as the drift was very manageable :)

Hello Evo, I am going to start fishing for trout for the first time ever this year and I was wondering if you had any advice on tackle?

What lb test line was used here? Great video as usual!
I was using 10 lb test Thunderbraid braided line with a 10 lb test Thundercarbon fluorocarbon line...the new Thundermist "Thundecarbon" is extremely strong, thin and sensitive and handles really well :)

I was fishing for catfish with a bloody bluegill and got a 14lb walleye man it looked like big ass bass I almost grabbed by his mouth but thank God I saw his teeth at the last second lol

Hey Ivo, Case again. Got a question about the Flexi-Jig. If I was fishing in the weeds and I hooked into a muskie or a northern pike, (without a wire trace) would the flexi jig go into is upper lip as it does or would he cut me off if he took it deep?

FarFuture98 Typically fish from 15 to 25 feet deep and 3/4 oz sinkers will allow you to bottom bounce nicely. the walleye, bass and trout can all be caught at these depths :)

Hey have u guys ever heard of power lines fishing? Alot of folks are hitting coho and trout in chicago at the lake front. As for me I'm not doing to well im using minnows and crawlers . My leaders are 16 in with a no.4 hook the Asian types one there real sharp. I know its a hit or miss but com on now,lol few mate by me are getting a few but im just not getting the hits.Any tips
Reggie Anglin Hi Reggie - if you are not already, try using 8 lb fluorocarbon line as a leader line to your hooks. The T-Turns are also a great way to keep you tangle free and allow your minnows to swim freely (no tangles). Heard of power fishing - we can not do that here in Ontario as we are not allow to fish with 50 hooks on one line but even if we could, i would fish that way....I'll stick to tradition :) th-cam.com/video/-laye82evco/w-d-xo.html

...he has a line running off the "t" part of the t-turn to a hook - you can make your own t-turn bait rigs, or you can buy the pre-tied ones....suggest rig #2A for bass/walleye :)
So, all I do is rainbow trout fishing in the U.S. and I can't seem to get any bites ever, is there a trick to it?
Hi Tyler - rainbow trout are a very "skidish" fish, they spook very easily. Suggest looking at your rig and use smaller octopus style hooks, such as a size 6 and to be sure to use fluorocarbon line or at least a fluorocarbon leader, as this is very important (check out the new Thundercarbon from Thundermist Lure Company as it is virtually invisible, very strong, sensitive and handles extremely well) When it comes to rainbow fishing, little things make a big difference :) th-cam.com/video/hbGJcTbEBqw/w-d-xo.html

Ugly stik is economical, strong and sensitive - St. Croix has a nice line of rods, but a bit more pricey :) 1 piece rods are best

Hi Tyse - when slowing down your presentation, you slowly jig upwards and let your jig fall, then pause for a second or 2 and then slowly lift it again. Sometimes the fish need that slow presentation in order to be finessed into hitting. If we were aggressively jigging, we would not have caught as many - however, when the fish are extremely active, then an aggressive approach can be used :) Another factor to consider when using a finesse approach is to use smaller baits - in this walleye and trout episode, I was using a small 3 inch plastic bait

Hi David - thanks for your feedback....sometimes we practice catch and release and sometimes we catch and keep for a nice fish dinner...we did release the big on in this episode though :)
Do walleye have teeth
outdoorsman mullins Walleye do have many teeth, but they are sparse, so you do not run the risk of getting cut off like you would a pike :)
