      I wouldn't recommend this for most people, but I used to to do dog rescue, and the BEST dogs were the ones that had a bad experience before I got them. There's a lot of work dealing with a neglected or abused animal, but if you can spend the time, and you have the patience, when you bring them out of it, they are really grateful and happy and affectionate.
      It's a TREMENDOUS amount of work though to deal with an animal in this condition. I had one dog, if I started her, she would urinate wherever she was. My bed, my couch, anywhere. You know how you deal with that? You do nothing other than to clean up the spot. It takes a lot of forgiveness and understanding. The dogs I had who had a bad time, they could do not wrong, EXCEPT they weren't allowed to be violent toward people or animals. I would use aggression to prevent that.

    I love the fact that you are encouraging him to use his voice to express himself freely as much as he likes. All his sounds would cheer me up so much. If he were mine, he’d be repeating “I love you” because he’d be hearing it from me frequently every day.

      Sadly "I love you" doesn't always mean that. One of my rescues says that everytime he's distressed or scared. I can't even imagine what happened to him in his former home that he came to assosiate hearing "I love you" with absolute terror. I can't tell him I love him, cause everytime I try, he gets on edge & stressed & generally completely freaked out & panicked that something bad is about to happen. He gets told he's a "good girl" constantly instead & he LOVES hearing that :)

      I didn’t know that. My goodness, that’s terrible. Telling them they’re a good boy or girl is just as good as the real meaning of “I love you” when spoken in soft loving tones.

      @@jazzman1626 yeh, it's really sad. I can't really figure out how he developed the association, but can't think of any good possible way it could happen either. With me he's learnt to say "oops sorry" when startled, cause they won't leave their cage, so I have their cage on big wheels & take the whole thing with me everywhere from different rooms to outside & I do sometimes accidentally hit doorways while moving & unconsciously say "oops sorry" when I bang their cage into something & startle them, so it makes perfect sense for him to learn to say "oops sorry" when startled, but how tf does a bird come to associate "I love you" with something to fear? It's horrible to think about what he must have been through
      & he definitely knows I love him :) I think our version of saying that is when I got into another room without taking the cage (cause I'll only be a short time) he contact calls me & I answer back - which is kinda what they do with their mate in the wild :)
      My boy actually can't handle touch from his past, so what he really likes to do to show & feel love is to just sit right near me. My girl likes touch, so she snuggles into my hand or face & preens me, while boy sits just a little further back just enjoying being close, but not actually touched :)

      I've actually had to teach my boy that it's ok to be laughed at, he would get really distressed when I laughed at something he did when I first got him, but over 2 years, I've gradually been able to teach him that making me laugh is a good thing & he's very slowely starting to learn to do it on purpose & it's a wonderfully rewarding experience when the bird learns to do something cute & funny to make it's human laugh - and definitely something to encourage & that the bird learns to really enjoy & get pleasure from too

    Having been in Parrot rescue for over 25 years now.... it never ceases to amaze me how people dont look at procuring a parrot as a lifetime commitment. People ...... birds are not just a novelty item you get and then put away when you are bored!!! Remember that these animals are "flock" animals and you ... the human BECOME their flock. Also dont buy from a pet shop. Only adopt as there are plenty of birds out there that need a good loving home but again.... remember.... when you adopt one..... they will probably live longer than you so make the time you have with them quality time and make sure that you have made provisions for them should they live longer than you!!!........ God bless you all!!!!

      I feel sad seeing a FLOCK animal stuck inside with humans, no matter how loving. As my daughter said when she was only 5 years old, seeing a bird in a cage..."But birds FLY!!" A lone bird, no mate or flock, for anything up to 80 plus years. It's like being locked in solitary for the amusement of humans. I love birds, and have rescued many, but wherever humanly possible, they are released back into their natural environment to continue with their real lives, physical conditions permitting...I have always, even as a child myself, strongly disagreed with keeping any bird in a cage unless they are ill, rehabilitating from injury, or endangered by human activity with building.

      @@Kayenne54 I understand your point of view for birds who are in their native country, and agree: they'd be able to find a flock to join, probably (I don't know what bird etiquette is on this).. But even those birds, if they're injured as Fred is--how would they survive in the wild? The answer is, they would die, possibly cruelly. I personally prefer to see Fred happy even if his life is limited, rather than dead.

      @@sundayoliver3147 If you read what I wrote, I stated that. Wherever possible, once rehabilitated, released into their own environment. I already did a wall of text lol. But obviously African Grey parrots, sulphur crested cockatoos, peach faced lovebirds, any bird from the Amazon; all those birds taken from their native countries to "elsewhere" wouldn't survive, or thrive, if released. I remember seeing a short video of someone in Holland, and a King parrot (native to Australia) landing briefly and surprisingly on their shoulder. For all we know, Fred may be a rescued cockatoo by the original owner; and had already lost his wing. I never assumed the owner had been cruel intentionally. What bothers me is benign cruelty, where animals are kept after recuperating as pets by well meaning, loving humans, and the birds CAN be returned to their natural environment. Obviously, with one wing, Fred wouldn't make it.

      How does he not survive? My little rescue girl kept trying to hang herself when I first got her & screaming & getting upset when I would gently unstick her head that she had jammed between the cage wire & branch, was sadly obvious that with something she thought she had the potential to use for the purpose, she was trying to commit suicide. For a decade before, she had been locked in a tiny cage with nothing, no chance for her to die, even though her life was so miserable that was what she wanted. She's much happier now & doesn't attempt anything like that anymore, but it was heartbreaking watching her doing that repeatedly when I first rescued her. These birds have no choice but to survive, but survive only, not live. I'm glad Fred now has the chance to live

    • @bkm2797
      @bkm2797 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      So relieved you were there to save her! Sounds like she didn't know any different and hadn't created a strong bond with her other human household, but she still was afraid of change. Your patience and perseverance gave her enough room to come around and learn she is safe. I know of two cockatoos who died of broken hearts when their human had to give them up. One was read by a famous animal psychic who initially knew nothing of her history, she was now an a Zoo type setting all by herself and she screamed all the time, the psychic explained to the caretakers what had happened, that she didn't understand why her human left her behind, two weeks later she passed. The other was a TH-cam channel I watch where this woman who had also had her cockatoo for 10 years but decided to give her up, Tyler the new owner put her in a large cage outside by herself, she screamed a lot and in less than a month she too died for no known health reason. Birds are very smart, and they attach themselves to us, so we must always keep that in mind.

    • @mehere8038
      @mehere8038 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@bkm2797 Those are such sad stories, but don't surprise me. Living in Australia, surrounded by parrots, it's not uncommon to see lorikeets in particular, who pair for life, in a situation where they have lost their life long partner. They will hang around with their larger flock, but are clearly depressed at the loss of their mate & within a couple of weeks, that bird will be gone, I'm guessing from failing to eat & dying cause of that loss of will to survive.
      I think my girl was wild born but injured & "rescued" by being locked in a tiny cage, without even the space to stretch her wings, resulting in her wings fusing, that would have been incredibly painful for months while it was happening. Owner did love her, just had NO IDEA how to care for birds. He got a second bird to keep her company, but kept it in a separate cage. When I got them, they were both super distressed, having never even seen outside, or anything but the one room they were kept in & now being moved homes. Both seemed to be strongly bonded & trying to get to each other for comfort, so I moved them into a new cage together & they really didn't know what to do in that setting, but were clearly comforted by it, even if not confident enough to touch each other. They were still really distressed though, boy saying "I love you" over & over & over, which I've learnt is what he does when scared, girl rocking back & forward like a mental patient in a movie & physically shaking & making whimpering crying noises & then doing the wrapping her head around branches thing as well. For both of them, food seemed to be the only thing they knew to associate with pleasure, so I guess that's why she didn't starve herself to death in the years before. Gradually though they have learnt to enjoy life :) Still a LONG way to go, but we are making progress & tbh, after 2.5 years, it feels like we've actually started to now really make inroads, has been a VERY long & slow process! & yes, they are VERY strongly bonded to me as well as to each other, would definitely distress them massively if anything was to happen to me

      I live in Southern California and every morning a flock of green parrots fly pass my apartment, yippity, yappity all the way__sometimes a few of them will make a pit stop on the telephone wires outside my living room window to 'discuss the day's plans'(or tease my kitties). 😛😹 Then, right around sunset, they come back in the opposite direction__'cawing' all the way! 😺 They like hanging out in the palm trees in our neighborhood, too!
      Because they're loyal companions, they usually fly(and make pit stops) in pairs__though you do see lone parrots as well, maybe cuz they're still young. But for sure, the flock grows each year__and I just love hearing them fly by twice a day! I will definitely miss them if I ever move out of this area. 💖🙌😺

    How anyone could mistreat this beautiful little guy is unthinkable! He’s stunning with an amazingly sweet personality. Give him all the cuddles he wants. Such a shame about his missing wing & all the other challenges he is facing, but at least he is truly loved now. 😥🙏
    So glad he ended up in your care. You all seem to fit together perfectly. One of the best endings I have seen in a rescue situation. Thank you so much for your obvious compassion, empathy & commitment to this little fellow. I have unlimited respect for people like this. ♥️👍

    Birds are incredibly passionate I've found. I rescued a Senegal parrot who had been alone in a cage a house where her owner had died as well as her mate. She had plucked out all her feathers, she was in such distress.
    When I put an ad in Rescue Me, I had 4 responses in 20 minutes. People are used to seeing parrots up for adoption but they always have a problem like biting. I said in the ad that "she's just like a 9 inch Golden Retriever." They are so loving when they are safe and get regular attention. It makes me angry that, knowing how long they live, people do not have agreements in place with other people to cover circumstances like death/disability so the bird continues to be cared for. Don't be one of those people!
