Dave Lee The cooling was my main issue I had with my 15x. Kept throttling whenever I tried doing anything taxing. Advertised as a creators laptop. Pah. It’s really not. Plus I had horrendous dpc latency. Nothing I tried would solve it. In the end I threw the piece of shit in the bin. Literally. MSI didn’t have any interest in resolving it or giving me a refund. 2 months after purchase it ended up in pieces.

Nice review. Thx Dave. This thing isn't meant to replace 15 inch gaming devices. It is about the trade off you have to make when deciding between power and portability. This is the first device which goes the other way around and gives you the maximum possible performance in that formfactor. The small and light design matters to many people more than the additional 10 minutes you get for render time. It is slower than a 15 inch gaming laptop but it is waaaay more powerful than anything else in that formfactor.

One small thing bugs me about the ports on this device. At 1:33 Dave does not mention it but the 2 usb-a on the 14-inch is actually running at just USB2.0 while the 15-inch has USB3.2 Gen2 according to the official website. I don't know why MSI made this decision but this really bothers me, like it is late 2019 and it still has usb2.0 as standard which is weird.
Besides, I find quite a lot of differences between the 14 and 15-inch model, not just about the form factor.
The 15-inch model has two configurations, the only difference is the resolution of the display, 1080p and 4K. Both have GTX 1650 max q and 2 slots, max of 64GB, ddr4 memory running at 2666MHz. They also have 2 SSD slots with 1 supports NVMe PCIe Gen3 and 1 supports both NVMe PCIe Gen3 and SATA.
However, the 14-inch models get a lot more complicated. First, It also only has 1 SSD slot supporting both PCIe and SATA which I think is fine given the smaller form factor. However, this is where it gets complicated. It has 2 GPU options, GTX 1650 max-q and MX250. No matter which GPU you choose, it has only 1 ram slot. But if you choose the models with GTX 1650 max-q, the ram can only be configured as LPDDR3-2133 and has a maximum of 16Gb only. If you choose to have MX250, you will get DDR4-2666 instead and has a maximum of 32Gb(When I saw the spec sheet I was like WTF??). Besides, the models with GTX 1650 max-q it comes with 802.11 ax Wi-Fi 6 but the MX250 one only comes with Intel Wireless-AC 9560 (2*2 a/c).
One thing worth noticed is that the 14-inch has Windows Hello support with both facial recognition and fingerprint reader while the 15-inch only has a fingerprint reader. The 14-inch has a keyboard that tilts 5 degrees, just the Asus ones, while the 15-inch does not.
I really like the 14-inch form factor, but the weird specs and USB2.0 as standard just bother me. TBH, I am shocked that the 15-inch and 14-inch actually differ quite a lot when I looked at the spec sheet. It seems that I will have to wait for more till a perfect laptop appears on the market. BTW nice video Dave!

i have the msi prestige that is basically a gs65 or whatever their 15 inch gaming laptop is, but supposedly for creators and not for gaming. have had it for a few months now. i like the laptop a lot. the keyboard has a bit of flex but the travel distance on the keyboard is good and the typing experience is satisfying. as he talks about, generally msi laptops dont have the amazing build quality that razer or apple does (pretend the keyboard issues werent a thing).
but an intel i7 8750h, 32 gigs of ram, 512gb ssd, and a 1070 max q for 1500 bucks on sale was an amazing deal

I don't get why most manufacturers don't passively cool laptops by using the chassis to disperse heat. You could still have a fan, less noise, good temperatures performance.

For me 14 inch is just the perfect size. 15 is just a bit too bulky and 13 is just a bit too tiny so i´m getting closer and closer to the screen.

I missed 17 inch laptops, kinda glad they’re starting to come back, I thought 15 inches was a little on the small side, I don’t understand why people want a laptop smaller than 15 inches, it’s not like it’s much more portable, the tiny screen feels like too much of a compromise

As long as this won't break (from physical abuse) on me and the battery lasts more than 2.5 hrs with internet on, I'd be more than willing to replace my 5 year old laptop on it's last legs with this. My standards were set low with a 4th gen intel cpu and nvidia gt 740 gpu. Just glad to have a stronger 14 inch laptop that's also smaller and lighter so my back and shoulders don't kill me whenever i have bring it along.

Laptops that don't have the separated numeric keys on the right side unfortunately don't serve 3D designers because they can't use many important shortcuts. But for anyone else it looks like a great laptop. Thanks for the video, as always you have very well explained.

@dave Lee I need help to buy a MacBook Pro 13 inch I will get Max out ram 16 GB and I will get 256 GB SSD.. but I’m having a problem with choosing processor..

    Or
    2.4GHz quad‑core 8th‑generation Intel Core i5 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.1GHz

    My older 13.3" LG N450 had an i7 3612QM and a Radeon 7650M.
The i7 3612QM was a 35W TDP CPU, but it ran slightly overclocked.
The Radeon 7650M used to draw 20W.
So... In total it was a 55W TDP system and it could ran at maximum speed and overclocked indefinitely without throttling.
The i7 and i5 10th Gen U are both 15W TDP with a minimum 12.5W and maximum 25W configurable TDP.
The GTX 1650 is supposed to be a 35W TDP GPU.
It the CPU is limited to 15W, the whole system is 50W, but if the system runs with maximum power, it could reach 60W, which is probably the same power consumed by my old LG N450 13.3" laptop.
In other words, it's quite disappointing to see a poor cooling solution on this new system, when older laptops with similar size and power dissipation could sustain full speeds without throttling and also with some overclocking or TurboBoost.

I got one and brought it back. Charger cable was super loose, got super hot, battery life is not good, also once it heats up the chassis flex’s and creaks. Had my hopes up big time and got let down.
