    This is one of their best dances. Sure, it doesn't have the grand, sweeping romance of some of the classics like "Cheek to Cheek" or "Never Gonna Dance" but it does have a similar intangible quality that's undeniable. And it's very sexy.
    As their earlier choreography stood in for the rituals of courtship, falling in love, and its inherent tensions, this dance is one of two long-established lovers, each completely confident in the other. They can let loose because they know this "dance" so well. There's a maturity here and not just because they're a decade older. The way they move together, so assuredly; the synchronicity of their footwork; the playful looks they give each other; and the unbearably cute chin tickle Fred gives Ginger. It's all there.
    Oh, and that exit? Stick a fork in me, I'm done!

    The snare-and-cymbals riff at 0:07 is a smashing opening to a wonderful tap reunion of Fred & Ginger. For their last film together, they dance in Technicolor for the first and only time and Ginger, at age 38, wears her strawberry blond locks down and loose- quite sexy with the blouse-and-slacks rehearsal togs. Fred, at 50, of course still defies age when he dances and may be the only man who can get away with a pink shirt, pink socks, and spectators for rehearsal wear. But their dance chemistry is still off the charts, even more so here, 'cause they look like old friends who get it (Fred's little 'ah-ha's' under his breath make it feel even more spontaneous and affectionate). Great finish to their 10 films together.

    • @esmeephillips5888
      @esmeephillips5888 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suspect the snare and cymbals opening is an idea taken from 'Coffee Time' in 'Yolanda and the Thief', where it is used to spooky effect as the music and dancers are desynchronized. Here, it's just cool.

    Maybe it's the slacks, but Ginger looks younger and more vibrant than even in their first film, "Flying Down to Rio"

    Thank you for this upload. I have a 5 year old great-nephew that loves to see this one and other Astaire (and Gene Kelly) clips. I'm hoping he will continue to appreciate the song and dance of this era. He's not quiet ready to sit through the entire movies that I show him but he loves the dance numbers.

    As befits a story about nostalgic reunion, lots of echoes. The cymbals and complex syncopation at the start recall Eugene Loring's 'Coffee Time' number with Lucille Bremer in 'Yolanda'. The spontaneous joshing, and Ginger's high-waisted black pants, evoke 'I'll Be Hard to Handle' from Roberta'. And the slow exit leftward round the curtain harks back to 'So Near and Yet So Far' with Rita in 'You'll Never Get Rich'. Fred was anthologizing himself.

    It was ten years since Ginger had danced more than a few steps in films, and she weighed quite a bit more. She was brought on to this project at short notice, but she acquits herself well in this high-energy piece. Her devotion to healthy living helped. Don't know if Robert Alton or her beloved tutor Hermes Pan was supervising; both are credited.
    This is like a throwback to 'I'll Be Hard to Handle' (from 'Roberta') in its atmosphere of improvised fooling, complete with breathy noises. Ginger wears high-waisted black pants as in the 1934 number, and Fred is in his beloved two-tone shoes. However the slow stage-left exit is more like those he did with Rita Hayworth.

      I agree. You can. I'm 67 and have danced all my life. Tap is my favorite. I just had a total knee replacement and as soon as I can, I'll be back at it. It's so much fun. Just find a dance studio with a good tap teacher and jump in.
