Rebuild your Fox Float RP2 rear shock

- If you have an older full suspension bike that seems to have lost it's life, bring it back to life by rebuilding the rear shock. I gambled $20 bucks on a Factory rebuild kit for my Fox Float RP2 and invested about an hour of time doing the rebuild. The results have been fantastic and I feel like I am riding a new bike again. The process was pretty painless and I had the tools I needed at home.

Simple little things like this go a long way. I changed out the airspring in my fork and it feels like a whole new beast.

Nice vid 👍. Avoid lubricating the dust wiper. If lubed, this outer part will have more dust/grim stick to it.

I'm torn between trying this myself, sending mine in to Fox for a rebuild (which would require me to find a temporary rear shock) or just saving myself the trouble and upgrading. I'm leaning towards upgrading because I can foresee myself messing this up and having to send it in for a rebuild, anyways, and I don't need the additional stress that would cause.
Thanks for the comment. As a thought for you, if you are upgrading, why not first give this a try. The parts were pretty cheap and the time commit is still small. That way if you mess up, you are not out a lot of money and can still upgrade. Order the needed parts first and then give it a try. Let me know which direction you take and how it went.

Just wanted to say a big thank you for taking this on. It reminds me of when I was in the Army (aircraft mechanic), and this was the last thing I needed to do on my bike, but was too afraid to do!
My only question is about the kit you bought (link in description?). I keep seeing something specific about the RP2/23 shock needing a specific q-ring.
I had no issues with the standard kit. Here is a link to the kit I used. You will end up with a couple extra seals because the kit is good for several type of shocks. I was also afraid to do it but figured what the heck! What is the worst that could happen. My level fell off awhile ago- can't seem to find any aftermarket ones WITH the set screw included unfortunately... if I find it, I'm gonna try and rebuild it.
I recently added a volume space and about 10mm of sick oil and the shock is working wonderfully. Works so much better now
How's it riding after the service? Much better I bet! I need to do mine and my forks at some point. :-/
Much better. I can actually adjust it now and the rebound is much more controllable. It was pretty easy overall.
There are two more seals on the outer part of the can you take the metal clip of and then slide out the outer cover and there's two more in there
Thanks Mark. I thought I got them all. That was all the new seals that came with the kit. It sounds like you have done this before. What kind of luck have you had with the replacements?

The only special tool I used was a little pick to get the very slim gasket from out of the housing interior. I made due with basic tools on hand. Good luck to you. It is easier than you would think. Hardest part was putting it back in place once completed.

I have an RP2 and can't seem to adjust the rebound. They think the rebound mechanism is dead. Will this help?
I am not sure. Who are "they"? The rebound mechanism seems to be a separate part. My rebound doesn't seem to have too big of a range. My shock seemed to have more life to it after I completed this. NExt up is my front shocks.
Hello, what pump did you use? Can I use just a standard 300 psi pump or does it have to be a special one? I’m in the UK
I use a standard shock pump. I ride at about 210psi. I go to 250psi if I am hitting jumps and big drops. I weigh 220
Litterally just send my fox rp23 to fox for a full service... 210 euro... it was leaking oil at the rebound switch!
Bummer. You will be happy when it works again. My ride is so much plusher now. And I can make adjustments to it again. Forgot what I was missing. Let me know once you get it back what the results are!

Great video, Would this fix the rebound? I have the same shock and the rebound will not adjust, it won't slow down. All time pogo stick. Thanks again.
It helped me some. The shock seems to be naturally springy. I put a volume reducer in later and it made a world of difference.

I've just had this bike gifted to me. I have never ridden a suspension MTB, had it serviced and they told me the rear shock is blown. Should I attempt this on my own or get it sent off by them?
What do they mean by blown? If it is just new seals, I suggest giving it a try. Much cheaper and is actually fairly easy on the scale of repairs. If it is the internal chamber, that can be rebuilt but I have never done that in depth level. I recently added a volume spacer to the shock in the video and it is amazing how much better it rides. No more bottoming out etc. Best of luck and let me know what path you choose. Hopefully this helps.

Not sure why the chain had to be taken off
I had never done this before and didn't have the experience to just leave it on. I also figured get as much stuff out of my way as possible.

I just googled the fox shock model I had and included rebuild. It gave me a the items I needed easy peasy. I ordered from Amazon and it cost me about $20

Hello @MTB Trail Sherpa , Will a rebuild address the problem of my RP2's propedal issue, wherein moving the lever towards the open or propedal side does not seem to lock-out the suspension (ie: open or propedal, there is still pedal bob).
I have an older RP2 and when the propedal is in the off position, it does not completely lock out the shock, it is supposed to just greatly reduce/ stiffen the suspension. I usually use that position when climbing to increase power to the rubber. I prefer a rather stiff suspension so I run higher pressures most times and I like a really fast rebound also. I have tried different settings but always seem to come back to stiff and fast rebound. If I was only going to ride rocky rooty trails I may soften things a little. My advice is try different settings to compare what works best for you. If you have a newer RP2 the propedal should almost lock out for you.
