i literally wore a iris costume for our myth pageant and when i won literally nobody in the room have heard about iris before me so i guess i did well in giving this marvelous goddess the spotlight that she needed because i WON the damn crown! just saying
Iris is one of my deities. She is the goddess of messenger, rainbow, healing, light and happiness. She brings luck and joy and colours to her followers. Indeed a very powerful ancient goddess. She works with faes and nymphs. Butterflies are seen around her as well as her followers.
Alexis Low what do you mean by one of your “deities”? I know some ppl still worship the Gods but I haven’t heard anything other than they are still worshipped.
i didn't know about Iris, everyone has an important role to play, many may think its trivial. but when you don't perform your role it can be the difference between winning or loosing a war.
I've heard a lot of people say greeks didn't really believe the myths (after all, olympus was just a place they could go) and they were all allegorical stories, but I think that's modern secular projection that started in the renaissance. Renaissance pundits liked to play up the "positives" (things that agreed with their own, subversive ways of thought) and downplay the "negatives" (things that disagreed with them) of classical culture, after all. Greeks harshly punished atheists, which I think speaks for itself, and for example in the decades after Japan opened its borders when there were still a huge number of very serious and literal shinto or shinbutsu practitioners we got a glimpse of a people to whom their legends were MORE real because they could actually climb the mountains where their kami lived and "meet" them via channelers.
I totally agree with you, Joe. Ancient myths make us dream. Boring, dull-living positivists will always say that mythos are just childish, allegorical stories that help ancient civilisations to explain phenomenas they don't understand. I know that. But, anyway, in my opinion, a world without mythos, and especially this beautiful story, would be so empty, so drab that I would have no longer will to live in it. Why seeing the world in black and white when you can see it in so marvelous colours!
Aww. Leto must have been thankful to Iris for helping her and her children in her hour of need. Since you need the sun (Apollo) and the tides which the moon pulls (Artemis) to help create a rainbow.
I don't think I've ever had a definite favorite of all the Greek gods and goddesses, but I think recently my favorite has become Iris. She seems like such a pleasant figure, the embodiment of the rainbow, all she wants to do is help, very good of her. :) I remember being introduced to her in seeing her in Fantasia in the end of the Pastoral sequence, where she's seen after the storm painting a rainbow across the sky. Since obviously the movie didn't say her name, I think my family and I always used to call her "Mrs. Rainbow". LOL Also as a Christian, I like how at the end of the story of the Flood in Genesis, God sends a rainbow to symbolize peace. I always associate that story with Iris, too, as she can be a messenger of peace in Greek myth. I also recently found a beautiful instrumental theme for her done by composers Derek and Brandon Fiechter, in their 1 Hour of Greek Mythology Music video. Check it out, it's one of my favorites. :)
Iris came to me during meditation. I had no idea who she was nor had ever heard the name. She came to me (weirdly as this may sound) and told me I was “the chosen one”! I have absolutely no idea what that means... I looked her up immediately and learned she’s a messenger!! Something happened today (the experience of communicating with her) and my life will never be the same!!! Thanks for sharing!!
better messenger than Hermes (and her other domain is a beauty :D ). at least your wallet is safe with her. with Hermes? 100% guarantee your wallet will gone. and in myth, she's faster than Hermes. anyways, great work, man!
Wow, I literally had no idea there were Gods/Goddesses of rainbows. Or anything like that. Now I'm going to be thinking of Iris every time I see a rainbow :) Also I was wondering, If you'd be able to do a video about the Phoenix? I'd love to learn more about it :)
Iris also featured on the story about the Trojan war. Homer's Iliad, I believe. She was the goddess who bore Aphrodite back to Olympus after she was wounded by Diomedes on the battlefield.
I probably wouldn't have known iris even existed or that there were titans if I hadn't read them, they also manage to add humour to the book great series if you ask me
Loved it. I recently "stumbled upon" the name and mention of Iris in a video about the syndic cycle of Venus. Conveniently, right as the Morning Star was rising in Gemini, the twins.
So happy that you mentioned Arke. I researched her a while back and found that her wings were given to Achilles, who was know as “Podarkes” or “Swift-footed. Coincidentally, Podarkes was the original name of King Priam of Troy.
Thank you for this video. I didn't know the Greeks had a rainbow goddess. This is the first time I've ever heard of Iris and it was fascinating to hear. I also appreciate the colourfulness of the visual part of the video. Gorgeous. Thanks again!

Hey Myth! Interesting vid as always 😉 I'm a bit of a mythology geek so I've read about Iris before. The accounts of her having a twin sister who acted as a messenger to the Titans was news to me though :) I agree with your points on the dutiful, agreeable Iris. Isn't it a bit ironic that the goddess of the rainbow is the one with the 'colorless'/drama-less personality though? I almost wish a story of her making a fuss would be unearthed just to have a glimpse of "what makes her tick", y'know? Wish you all the best, Myth! 😆
I named my dog after the goddess of rainbows. Everything fit because my Iris is tricolor, and has heterochromia, and is also very fast. Thanks for the video.
I have been trying to do research on the goddess and have come up with a jumble of information. You can't know how happy I am to see/hear information that's reliable!
In Spanish, the name for rainbow is "arcoiris". Arco translates to arch, so we were to literally translate it to English it would be irisarch. Funny how we never realize how much sense words make. Rain Bow, Iris Arch... Pretty cool, learn something new everyday

I agree. It seems no one believes in anything these days.

"Zeus ripped off arche's wings during the war " WHOA! I NEVER KNEW THAT WHERE DID YOU HEAR THAT STORY? I WANT TO KNOW MORE
Ok?
It’s a known fact plus he gave the wings to Thetis who gave them to her son Achilles
What if the pegasus lost his wings at some point and decided to use Arche's
I know she's a messenger for the enemy, but still, that was a dick move on Zeus' part
