      @pct87 Calypso was a sorceress and the daughter of the Titan Atlas. In the First Titan War, she sided with her father but the Titans lost the war to the Olympians, i.e Zeus and his party. The Olympians punished all of the Titans they had fought against. But since Calypso wasn't essentially evil, Zeus trapped in an enchanted, paradise-like island called Ogygia. Calypso would have to spend her time tending for gardens, weaving clothes and performing small amounts of sorcery. Occasionally, heroes would wash up at the shores of her island. Calypso would have to look after those heroes and take care of them. It is said that they were attractive men whom she couldn't help but fall for; but at last, they would abandon her. According to Homer's Odysseus, Odysseus is said to have washed up at the shores of Calypso's island, where he had spent a lot of time with her. But eventually returned back to his wife Penelope. It is also said that no man can find Calypso's island more than twice. ( Hope you found this helpful. :)

    I’ve always been fascinated with the name Circe. The Latin root of Circle ⭕️ has similar origins. Variants like Kirk in Scotland, and Church in England, are also used to describe a ritual meeting place.
    The Goddess Cybele has similar variations, which include the name of the prophetic Sybil.
    These suggest something more than minor deity status when it comes to cultural effects.
    I suspect Circe’s connection to botany may also include entheogens or hallucinogens. This could explain the association to both magic and religious practice in its original forms.
    The transformation of men to animals is also included in other stories, like Odin’s initiation of warriors in forest bear cults. Circe may have also have initiated warriors or magicians. It would explain them staying on for a year (and a day). Plus her mating with Odysseus and his resurrection story would also point to cult practices.

      Circe, and her niece, Medea, are portrayed similarly in this. In stories where her family tree is expanded upon, both have no humanity in their ancestry, only Primordial Deities, Titans, and Oceanids (Which are daughters of two Titans). So based on this family tree stuff, they are certainly goddesses. That said, both are sometimes said to be priestesses of Hecate, and are often portrayed as mortals with magical abilities. A big part of the issue is that Greek myth is far from consistent. There is no single accepted canon. Stories would be passed down, often orally, and so the same story will take on different details, depending on the time and place. There's a good chance that they were originally mortals, perhaps wise-women, maybe even real people, but re-tellings have changed their portrayal to something completely different. Morgan Le Fey from Arthurian legend is treated much the same way.

      Medea's dad is every bit as much a divine being as Circe, and Medea's mom was an Oceanid, a type of minor sea goddess.

    • @vaggos013
      @vaggos013 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Medea truly had divine ancestry but she was most like demigod. She murdered her brother Absyrtus with cruelty, a brother from the same parents. That means he was not immortal like Medea who eventually went to Hades. There are some figures in Greek Mythology who although have both parents divine they are mortals (Phaethon was killed by Zeus and was child of god Helios and Oceanid Clymene). So Medea was powerful but more like a demigoddess.

    Thank you so much for this video! I've always loved the story of Circe. You go into so much detail and I always learn something new .Love the ancient deities and you always go into motivation instead of the usual cut and dry pasting of the story that we hear so many times before. A side note though, to all the folks who like to fit the Gods,Goddesses and other beings in tight little boxes as reflected in the 21st century ,this ancient people were certainly more fluid.For instance ,Hecate in a number of myths give birth and has children . She is far more than the Virgin Crone Goddess label that many people hang on her. Just one man's opinion. As for the lovely Circe, I believe she would turn men into animals that the men resemble. I'm sure the majority of the ship's crew were in the presence of a loverly woman of wealth and could have been crass to say the least especially when wine is involved. No different that alot,not all,men of today.Circe is definitely her own woman and driven by a desire for power which insures she can follow her heart. She appeared to do quite well in her environment. Thanks again!

    The name Circe comes from the Greek Kirkoo meaning to secure with rings, or hoop around. Referring to the binding nature of magic. She is considered an enchantress and demi goddess, an semi-mortal - in both worlds in a way- another possible parenting in Roman mythology is Hecate and Mercury ( Greek Hermes). She is a trickster figure, but immensely helpful and wise. She tests, and challenges Odysseus, but she sets him on his path and gives very helpful advice.

    Circe is what we in the Wiccan community call a Hedge Witch, the use of plants with magical property's in her position's, I don't see her as a particularly nasty goddess but rather misunderstood. I mean all of use at some point in our lives just want to be alone but our pet's usually come to use at these moments to comfort us so I can understand where Circe is coming from 😊

    4:42 To die from grief, most have been a side effect of Circe's spell. Once brought back to life by sorcery a person becomes heavily influenced by their emotions both in mind and body. Lacking what ever it was that shielded them (spirit "skin??") from their emotions having TOO much influence on their health in their first life. Emotional pain becomes intense physical pain, sadness has a real danger of killing you a second time. Rage could literally engulf you in flames! (burnt to a crisp)

    2:43 That's an interesting "twist" on the whole spell preparation thing. It also has some intriguing implications. Say I have a poor soul drink a (totally not suspicious) elixir, now they are at me mercy. At any moment I could activate my spell, (the potion is now deep within their system) like a delayed effect with the incantation being a sort of trigger. A helplees victim, once drunken a sorcerer's potion are now bound to them. *"you are within my power!"* the sorcerer would say. *Harkens back to times when practitioners of magic weren't all powerful, Technicolor DEATH blast spammers but had to use trickery and clever schemes in order to lure their victims into a web of doom...*
