When Styx joined the Olympians and her children followed, it brought victory (Nike) to his side, you can see right there is the reason Zeus rewards Styx greatly and was thankful to her.
She sounds to me like a kind but stern deity that deals with oaths, binds, and bonds. Promises are to be taken very seriously and never broken unless one has no other choice. Oaths broken by necessity and morality, she will not take offense nor punish. A kind, caring, serene, but stern mother that prizes bonds.
Again another great lesson. I had no idea that styx was a titan goddess. I believe that when taking an oath in the name of Styx was saying you gave your word and your word is your bond.
In the underworld, when ferried across the river Styx, you are crossing the border between Life and Death. As the goddess of oaths, when making promises in the name of Styx, its basically "crossing your heart, and hoping to die." Even Zeus knew better than to go back on his own word.
i never knew that Styx could also refer to an actual Titan, thank you, this was amazing and very educational. Could you do Mesopotamian Deities and/or Persian Mythology?!
You mean like Aa, Shammash, Ishtar, Tiamat, and the supergod Marduk. I do love me some Enuma Elish and Epic of Gilgamesh. Those stories are so old they were considered ancient by the Pharaohs of Egypt and Moses when he took down the Ten Commandments. The fertile crescent was birthplace of civilization, when tales became actual mythology and not just the thousandth retelling of a cave painting depicting a guy spearing a mammoth between the eyes. To heck with Eurocentrism, human beings began in Africa and civilization began in the Middle East. Those are facts proven by science and history.
Styx and her oaths are one of my favorite Greek myth themes. Her four children were also the throne attendants/protectors of Zeus and his most trusted warriors I read somewhere as well.
An interesting fact: In Persian mythology there's also a story of a hero like Achilles named "Esfandiyar" who was bathed in holy water's of a shrine and when he was put in the water, he closed his eyes, making them his only weakness and later causing his death... AMAZING!
The Ghost of Christmas Past yes, but it was very appealing to me to find a similar character in greek mythology... Just wanted to share what I know and thought was interesting.
me me I was able to study it in High School as part of our Literature. Ancient Lit was the most interesting part of my day in my Junior year. I am Celtic, and though have Irish , Scots- Irish and Scandinavian , I am interested in Greek Mythology.
It shows us that, as powerful as the Olympians(and Titans!)were, there were beings and forces whose powers dwarfed even theirs! There definitely should be more stories on this powerful goddess!
the oath keeper, eh? also mother to Nike, Kratos, Zelos, and Bia (not mention in myth she's one stern momma). i ......... don't wanna to know what punishment she gave to her children if she catch them red handed for stealing her cookie. great job, man. (damn, this lady give me the heebie jeebies).
What did you expect from a lady who's namesake is a river in the underworld? Warning about the river Styx, don't drink from there, cause I don't know what that liquid is, but it ain't water. In fact one way you can bribe Charon is with a full jug of fresh drinking water, cause he's always thirsty. It'll get you a free one way trip into the underworld, no questions asked. Of course, dealing with the guard dog and getting back is on you.
All this while I knew that Styx was just one of the rivers leading souls to hades. Thnks for enlightening. Cud u do some videos on ancient wars n heroes.?
It seems pretty clear to me that Styx was one of the misunderstood goddess of Greek mythology, but that seems to be the case with many of the goddesses in many mythologies. Though she only had a river named after her, it is one of the most feared even in today’s time. So I think she still holds some power. But I’m not going to swear by that.
Imagine if the wedding of Hera and Zeus would make them swear to the river of styx. Hera would've been soo happy but many of the gods and goddesses won't appear.
I think Hades and Persephone did in one version of their story but I could be wrong so don't quote me on that, I know you're talking about Zeus and Hera
Yeah I understand, when topics warrant more discussion the videos get longer but with the Titans there isn't much known about them so material is scarce.
Really enjoyed this video. I learnt a lot and appreciated your interpretation of her. Not to make you feel rushed or overwhelmed but if or when you can I'd like to see one on Mnemosyne. Thank you for dedication to these videos....always a fan 💙
I heard Pheaton was Apollo's son, and it was Apollo who drove the sun chariot later on. Also Apollo started straight up taking credit for Helios' doings
I'm thinking maybe one of the reasons why the Gods would ever break their oath or promise, under the Styx, is if there were later to be more serious harm done than good..
I imagine Styx having long, gleaming dark blue hair (like polished Lapis Lazuli) that constantly flows around her as if caught in a maelstrom of hatred (even out of water); translucent smoke quartz gazelle horns in a darkening gradient (father had bull horns so why not?); bewitching ember eyes burning with rage, framed in long sooty charcoal black lashes; ash white skin and serpentine tail who's scales have a opalescent sheen edged in the same dark blue as her hair; and razor edged beta fish fins. I see her with a taut feminine body with supple serpentine curves that hide explosive adrenaline charged strength rather than an obvious powerful bullish build.
It’s nee-ky. Not N-eye-k. The greeks don’t speak like that. In fact, none of non English speakers say it. For some reason in America people began saying n-eye-k. Poseidon also is said weirdly. Pos-eye-don. When people say Po-see-y-don
Is anyone able to go into the river and become invincible or was it just him because in the Percy Jackson books two people went into the river and became invincible
I only knew the story about Achilles being dipped in the river Styx by his mother. But this was great love learning more and learning of a new goddess waifu.
I just noticed that most of the titans consistently had between 3 and 4 children (usually 4) and each one was related to their parents in some way in what they were in charge of.
Regarding Achilles almost invulnrability origin tale, the styx river narrative was a substitute to the one where Thetis anointed him with ambrosia and burned him with sacred flames. Why there was this change is unkown by me, though I thought this change was done only several centuries later, sometime in the middle ages since Fire was used as punishment to heresy and water was considered as purifying (associated with the rite of baptism).
I had no idea there was a god/Titan named Kratos. I just thought it was a character from God of war, but I guess he had to be based on something and the god/Titan of strength makes a lot of sense.
This story is ABSOLUTELY true..I have a friend who died 3 times within a 15 minute period, in a motorcycle accident.he is alive now, when asked what did he see while dead he replied that he was in the bottom of a small wooden boat that smelled like death. And was being polled by what he decided as kinda a grim reaper. But he had a feeling that it was a women..years later I met a old man in a bar,he was a retired police officer who had died for 20 minutes or so.i asked him if he happened to be in the bottom of a small wooden boat with a grim reaper polling you through shallow water,,,and the old man began to cry..he asked me how I knew about that.i have only met two people who have been dead.and both have seen the same thing.im not sure what to make of it. I was born as a catholic. Maybe the Greek gods are true.kinda weird.
In any pagan cultures, breaking an oath meant losing your honour and that is a fate worse than death. So in that way Styx is the ruler of oaths and words, giving her extreme respect and power over all beings and even Gods.
This kinda reminds me of a similar cure Eres did to herself in the movie Sinbad where she cut an X on her self vowing a promise that will harm her for all eternity if not kept
I have died and when I did I was in a green river and there was bodies floating all around me then a skeleton hand reached down and grabbed me and pulled me out of the green river, I told someone about it and told me about the river of styx which led me here

When Styx joined the Olympians and her children followed, it brought victory (Nike) to his side, you can see right there is the reason Zeus rewards Styx greatly and was thankful to her.
What's funny is that I didn't know Nike was the name of a Greek god until someone told me
“There’s a story where Zeus fell in love...” 98% of Greek mythology begins this way it seems.
Lmao
“And Zeus impregnated her”

Yep, certainly a more worthy Deity than 90% of the Olympians 😅
You did hear she was the goddess of hatred right?
The Goddess that maintains the word of the Gods
they fear her punishement
Styx and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me, is uncompromising oath.
Again another great lesson. I had no idea that styx was a titan goddess. I believe that when taking an oath in the name of Styx was saying you gave your word and your word is your bond.
