I know this is a late reply, but I just got my hands on a antminer s9 (Nov/2018) and I noticed that the fans are too close to the antminer heatsinks, cause what happens is, when the fast volume of air passes through the aluminum fins, the fins vibrate giving you a drone/ring noise. So what I did is put a spacer between the fans and the aluminum block. Much better. I 3d printed the part out.
My original setup had a 4" duct venting out a window (heat problem solved but still noisy at around 80 db). I added the silencer to the intake and now it is running around 65 db. With this setup I would say it works great.
I have had it running in this configuration for a few days now and the temps are at 82,77,81. The fan speeds are at 4600 and 4800. Also when I added the 2nd silencer on the output the fan speeds were both maxed out at 6000.
Cool thanks for the input! The silencer does help in your setup with venting the air outside, but they run a little hotter it seems depending on the air temp in the mining room I guess.
I have noticed with other things that needed to have the ducting silenced. That if you use soft plastic tube instead of metal tube that by its self will do a lot to bring down the noise level. The metal stuff vibrates and makes its own added noise.
Man, you should try it with an insulated Duct. It's no surprise that there's no effect because the duct you're using doesn't block sound at all. And another thing: Curves do produce about 18x more static presure drop than straight duct. Guess the Antminer Fans aren't supposed to have more presure drop than the amount the Heat Sinks are producing.
I run several Antminers in my apartment/house using the hot air to for heating. My PC-Fan is actually louder than what I can hear from the Antminers. But I don't use this duct silencer so I can't say if it would work. But I can say that insulated ducts really surprised me. It was kind of a game changer for my soundproof box. However, I learned from your video that there are afordable Anemometer. This was a big help as well. So thanks for that and good minings :)
Your Setup is hooked up all wrong, your noise is escaping from the fan .. It needs to be connected directly OVER the fan for it to work. The muffler you will need in this setup would have to have a opening of over 120mm
Hi... I wish you lived nearby and you could do an analysis of the noise box that I made (I'm in Spain). You would have a lot to tell about this box. Supports 2 single tube Asic (S9, T2T, M3X, ...) or 1 double tube Asic (s17, D1 pro, A6 LTCMASTER, T3T, Z11, E3 ...). Includes 160mm flexible tubes with rock wool. The first section (90 cm) of this tube is double layer (160mm + 200mm) flexible rock wool. These are used for hot air outlet. It is thought like this (tube diameter of 160mm) so that it does not affect the temperature of the equipment. The Asics have almost the same values working outside the box. This box is stackable, attached and registrable at the same time. With Climalit crystal (4 + 23 + 3) to see the LEDs of the equipment without having to open the box. I know that it cannot have much market because it is very heavy (70 kg ,pallet included) and its large shipping dimensions (80 * 60 * 77, pallet included) that make international shipping very expensive. But it is very effective, with two 2 S9 at 23º of room temperature it obtained 50 - 52 DB, chip temperature 76º and rpm of fans around 5400 to 5600. Thank you for this I almost bought some for my D3. I currently run the exhaust into a 5 inch exhaust hose, it seems to suppress the sound quite a bit while not impeding airflow much, although I don't have an anemomoter to have accurate airflow measurements.
whe are planning to build a isolated box for multiple antminers to sit in i am going to use some extra 120m fans for inhale and a centrifugale fan to exhaust the hot air out i am planning to use a filter fabric between the hose conecting the antminer box to the box with the centrifugalen fan and maybe on the hose from the centrifugale fan to outside if its stil noise i get fresh air from the otherside of the building with hard tubbing the air flow is best this whey if both windows are open air flows from back to front without and form of ventilation used so if i would take air from front to back the fans have to use more force to be able to get enouch air where if the other way around it helps get more air flow :D.
Hey "GottaMinute!!". Can you actually do a short clip with one of these actually attached to the fan shroud itself? The ebay seller for these doesn't show any video proof for how silent these can make your Antminer.
Hi, I actually sold these silencers. You can get them for around $20 now, but I also have heard people say put one on the front and one on the back. I did not try that. I think the miner would still be loud. Some people put them in boxes and coolers :) It's best to have a separate room for them. They are loud machines!
has anyone found by putting a vent on that you damage the s9 because it creates too much backflow? I have a similar setup (3d printed coupler and vent, no silencer) and ive had ASIC chips fail on hash boards. Other S9's running in free air environment havent had this failure rate according to my research so far.. how u identify the problem is the hashing drops in rate and you see zeros missing in the chip console but the unit still runs and preforms, just not as good.
You need a very high rpm vent, like 6000 rpm size 12x12cm, with 4 pins of control cable, because otherwise it wont fit and if it ever fitted, the board would not be able to control fan speed, operating them always at the max and most noisy speed. Maybe 2 vents in a row, attached to the already existing screw holes would increase cooling and reduce workload per single vent, leading to rpm (and so, noise) drops. After all the control panel of the miner has space for 4 fans, that may be the meaning, I need to try this setup, but I never have that spare $40 to buy that from amazon :(
Wouldn't this add a ton of overhead to the airflow? Thus increasing the power load from the DC motor inside. Also, you will accumulate heat which is the entire purpose of the cooling system. These miners really don't belong in a household in my opinion. Not just because of the noise either, residential power rates are typically high too.
Yes, it does slow the airflow down. These silencers are not an idea solution for any setup. Airflow is the most important thing to think about when running these or any server.
barrettdesigns I get 7 cents per kilowatt and run a very large mining operation at my home. It's lower than some hosting companies offer and best of all you don't pay money for handling, service etc. There are also more ways to silence Antminers and such (got an Avalon 7 down to 60dB, discrete sound measuring tool) for around $130. No heat issues.
Hi, yes. I used two power supplies for this review because I do not have a 220v plug in the room I record the video in and one of those power supplies was not powerful enough. You can use two power supplies, but make sure you do not connect the same hashing board to two different power supplies. Did you have to link them together? Or do you run them separately? I have a breakout board with only 8 pcie running from 1 psu that is 900W@ 110v. Wondering how to power them up together.
GottaMinute yes you just didn't know what to do you have to put it in a thick enough box or coolers with those silencers and then it would be sound proof and put the silencer on the back of the miner and the front then you would have no problem with sound.

Side Note: I tried to add a second one on the output side but the miner got pretty hot and the sound level difference was negligible.

I run a solid ducting pipe, like 3mm thick plastic. Stops the high pitch alot
The sound will be coming out of both ends, unless of course the inlet air is supersonic, so you need a silencer at both ends.

I made my own silencer for my x2 Antminer L3+'s lowered DB from 79db~ to 58db.

Those 2 PSU are as loud as the S9 itself , you should isolate them.
Nah, the PSUs are not as load as the S9s.
These in particular are , not as the s9 but pretty close , i have them they are hp server psu
I don't think the silencer would work with this because the sound is coming from the machine itself rather than mainly through the exhaust

Making a box with intake and exhaust cuts the sound in half and isn’t expensive as this useless piece of junk.
Will this increase the temperature inside the box to the extent that it will not be good?
