  • This is an experiment using an AntMiner S9 in a fishtank!
    Please know that this is an experiment and is solely for learning and experimentation purposes.
    The viability of bitcoin mining comes from efficiency. This experiment is NOT the most efficient setup at all. Actually, air cooling is the most cost-efficient process for this device.
    Please watch this video with a HUGE grain of salt knowing that this is for learning purposes and just for the fun of experimentation.
    Mineral Oil - amzn.to/2BxcENI
    Radiator XSPC - amzn.to/2BwQFXi (ended up using 2 )
    Barb Fittings - amzn.to/2DFtFqR
    120MM Fans - amzn.to/2FlzF8E
    Power Supply - amzn.to/2DFBhK2
    Pump Part 1 - amzn.to/2Gjt3ZH (not strong enough)
    Pump Part 2 - amzn.to/2GpyDK7 (ended up using this one)
    Primary purposes of the video was to share my experiment and test various hypothesis of my own.

    Lose the gravel. It will eventually clog the pump or radiator. Lose the boat. It will act as a heat sink that retains rather than dissipates. Remove the front plate from the controller to allow circulation and prevent a hot spot there. Remove the fans. They don't behave as propellers. They will hinder rather than facilitate circulation and they'll draw more power doing it than they would in air. Remove as much of the case as possible to maximize exposure to the oil and eliminate heat retention. Place the suction and return lines on opposite ends of the unit to create flow. The whole purpose of doing this is to be able to run the unit at higher frequency (which means higher hash rate) while simultaneously consuming less electricity. If done correctly, the power consumption can easily be reduced by around 25% while simultaneously producing around 40% higher hash rate.

      @@hijunglegym88 it’s not really my system. I just pointed out the most obvious things that he did wrong. When I was mining (briefly) I had a setup in a medium size cooler that worked pretty good. But I got out after the last halving. Electricity is too expensive and the reward is too low. In fact, crypto is a terrible idea now. It doesn’t even make a good way to store wealth confidentially and it was never suitable for investment.

    Great video. However, everyone should know that mineral oil is flammable and can be used in an oil lamp. If it catches fire, then it will burn and burn. If it is near flammable material such as a cloth then the oil could feed that material similar to a wick. If you use this type of system for cooling, then please have an automatic fire suppression system capable of quenching oil fires. Remember, the electric system could also cause a spark and ignite the oil.

    Come on man, we need to know how efficient this was. How hot did the fluid get? Was the radiator able to transmit enough heat out of the medium? Did you stick with it? Why not?

    • @JoelPagan
      @JoelPagan  6 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Leaving out details. Fluid tested until 110 degrees. Max temperature reached in +-30min at a normal room temperature. Minus +-10 room temperature reached in +30min. Two radiators (these specifically) cannot remove the heat generated. This is somewhat given because they are built for ~350 watt of heat removal give or take. A custom radiator would do. I still wanted to test this though. I did not stick with it because it was purely an experiment to get some numbers in order to properly calculate scalability requirements. There is a lot of math out there to calculate this but no practice. I hope that helps.

    • @StephenOwen
      @StephenOwen 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Joel Pagan thanks for the reply. It would be interesting to combine this with a window ac to more effectively draw the heat from the radiator. Or place a large radiator with a fan outside of the window to place the waste heat outside directly.

    • @JoelPagan
      @JoelPagan  6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Stephen Owen Definitely. It really depends on your goal. One miner and trying to get rid of noise? Then just build a simple sound box with mufflers and loaded mass roll. Trying to keep cool and noiseless 5-10 in an office closet? Then just use this setup with a heat exchange condenser (the ones that look like an ac). Only if you can justify the extra cost of equipment and oil. Somewhat hard to make the case for that though. Bitmain tried to do liquid cooling with the c1 but it's not as cost effective. Works OK for hobbyists but not scalable.
      I'm willing to demonstrate a large scale solution if enough people find value in doing so.
      What window setup were you considering?

      Note that silicon chips has working temperature range, under certain temperatures they might not work or may work faulty. They all have a datasheet containing the working temperature range, that is usually between around -50 and +100C. If there is a kind of luck the silicon chip can create that much heat to heat up the conducting material between the chip and the coolant to maintain the working heat range even with such an excess cooling, then it might work. In worst case there is a chance to break the chip because of thermal difference on the two sides. A lot of materials crack if one side is overcooled and other side it warm. Silicon chips are not different. Keep in mind this might ruin the equipment.

    • @digitalstyles
      @digitalstyles 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So build it similar to a MRI Scanner. We use liquid helium to cool our magnets. but we layer our silicone and wires in multiple layers of epoxy prior to the "direct" exposure to the liquid.

    • @digitalstyles
      @digitalstyles 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      But even so, the more heat you generate the more of whatever liquid you'll boil off unless you use a condenser unit that captures the boil-off and re-liquefies it.

Cooling it costs extra energy = youre loosing money on cooling that oil. • @rustycannon2049

      A refrigerator is not designed to cool an active heat source. Think about how long it takes to cool a 12 pack of coke which isn't not generating heat continuously. You'd end up with a really hot fridge.

    • @CJFilms1001

      A refrigerator only pulls the energy (heat) from the inside, and drags less energy into the inside. The hotter it is outside a fridge, it will get hotter inside the fridge.

    Umm, I have a few concerns:
    #1: I thought water and Electricity don’t mix, generally if something like an ASIC miner which uses electrical circuitry came into contact with water, the ASIC would short and well not work, it’s not so much the fact that it works that concerns me, it’s the water that concerns me.
    #2. Isnt metal corrosive when it comes to water, like doesn’t metal corrode when it comes into contact with water?
    #3. For say someone whom might wanna do this is there a way to somehow “Mount” the PSU and Radiator to the Tank in the hopes of making it easier to move around/make look more aesthetically pleasing?
    #4. Would this soloution pretty much eliminate noise and temperature from becoming an issue for someone say in a unit where the is poor ventilation?

    • @AzarathAkthar
      @AzarathAkthar 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      (1&2)
      it's not water. It literally says on the big ass jug "Mineral oil"
      Mineral oil is non-conductive.
      I don't think he mentioned water at all. (Idk he might've, but either way it's a mineral oil system he's using)
      (3)
      Possibly. I wouldn't put it on the side of the glass because that would restrict airflow to the radiator though and once the mineral oil heat soaks, it'd be like pretty much running dry with no way to get rid of the heat.
      (4)
      The noise would be almost entirely gone except for the heat dissipation method which would be the radiator + fans that he stood outside of the tank. (This would be MUCH quieter than the fans in the miner, though.) You would still need to put the heat somewhere there's good airflow because all you're doing is displacing the heat and not removing it entirely, thus the need for the radiator. You could possibly have the tubes running out a window and just stick the radiator outside if you don't have good ventilation.

      Joel Pagan how has it been mining so far?
      Let's say I had a big tank with 4 miners in it, with oil, do you suppose there would be enough heat in the oil to flow through a coil in my ductwork to heat my home reasonably?

    • @JoelPagan
      @JoelPagan  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Joel B Technically it would be possible but I don't think you would want that because you want the inverse of that setup. In your case your describing the desire to have the greatest amount of heat go through ducted pipes and then home radiators. In the mining setup you want the least amount of heat going through pipes because your trying to keep the temperature -10 below room temp.
      I don't want to give specific numbers because they are highly subjective and not fully scientific. However, I am completely certain that 4 of these can keep a 2500sq ft. home perfectly warm all winter long if the home has reasonable insulation and you duct the output to your home vents. No need for costly oil nor containers.

    Moronic idea that obviously wouldn't work better than air and would rapidly degrade your components. Take that rad and attach it directly to the chips, and then increase airflow over the rad instead of putting the whole thing in what is essentially an incubator and using a radiator that is a fraction the volume of the fluid inside the tank that would obviously not be able to deal with the heat. Hugely irresponsible video as I can see people asking how to build this in the comments, without finishing the video and showing people that this doesn't work, and instead calling it "literally the coolest" is encouraging people to throw thousands of dollars and the planet's resources into the trash
