It's been one year since I got my 2002 grand marquis, 60k miles on it. The last owner was an old lady, but a friend of her who is a mechanic was taking care of it. He was putting 5w 30 on it and suggested me to keep using the same. The motor goes smooth, and I get around 17 Mpg city/28 Mpg hwy
I live in Guadalajara, Mexico, On summer we reach around 100 F and on winter the coldest we get is around 35 F, no snow

I had to buy motor craft 5w30 for my 2005 CVPI because 5w20 was nowhere to be found during Covid. I had an oil leaking coming from the main seal and it went away once I started using 5w30

I've been using 5w-20 which is the spec on the 2003, 2008, and 2010 that I owned so I never had to question whether I should be using something different. If I had an older one that said to use 10w-30 or 5w-30 I would probably still use that despite the TSB since it doesn't appear that the switch to 5w-20 was for any reason other than fuel economy.

I've always used 5W20, but I know that Fleet Services for Marion County, Indiana, uses 10W30 synthetic blend on all their CVPI, and we still have 02, 03 some 04, 07, 08 as Pool cars, and 09-11 are issued to Officers there are plenty of 2011's. They do use 5W30 on the Interceptors Sedans and Utilities and 5W20 on all Chargers... I asked a foreman about this, and his answer was not really convincing. He said, "the crown vics will consume less oil with 10W30 when idling for an extended period of time." I don't know about that, lol

      Right on Arnaldo,
Thanks for watching, and the good feedback.
The majority of all of the 4.6L Panther car owners down bellow have commented they ignore the manufacturer recommendation of 5W-20, and to use 5W-30.
As far as running 10W-30 in a car that calls for 5W-20 while the car is under manufacturer warranty...
I can see a dealer denying a warranty claim for an engine if they have the oil tested, and find out it was the wrong viscosity.
Btw, are you a fleet maintenance manager for a government agency, (just wondering)?

I think we're all pretty much in agreement the 30 offers greater protection with a minor, minor reduction in fuel economy.

Also is that 650,000 km (429,000 miles) on the original engine?
I hope to make it to that mileage.

I noticed little bit better fuel economy with 5w-20 but not enough to justify it the 5w-30 little thicker little more protection only thing that we replaced was rear end was rebuild and intake blue other then that solid 300k with minimum maintenance. The taxi company’s we sold them to used 5-20 conventional and they drove crown vics 500k

So I switched to Castrol 5w30 synthetic blend with Motorcraft filter and it made a huge difference. My engine is really quiet now and idles a lot smoother than before.

  • @harrison4ever125

Chuck I never saw a ball drop! Very detailed and excellent video. I didnt realize the viscosity could impact the overall fuel economy! My strategy has always been a very simplistic one. I use thicker oil on what I deem an "older worn out engine." I'm probably totally wrong about that that though. It just stands to reason to me that the older an engine gets, the more it can benefit from a thicker oil. I was on Valvoline's website the other day and they actually concurred with that mentality but also deferred people to their manufacturer's guidelines. In all probability, I should probably be using a lighter weight oil.
But having said that, I have run 10w30 in the 2006 Mercury since I bought it in May of last year and I also ran it in the 2000 P71 for the year I owned it, and I have not suffered any noticable issues. However I did not do a fuel economy comparison. If I'm being honest I'm always far more concerned with performance than fuel economy. A fault of my youth...😅

Nice video, and I use 0W-20 Synthetic motor oil.
First, the only reason Ford, or any automaker switched from 5W-30 to 5W-20 is solely for fuel economy. The oil pump has to work a lot less to pump the oil. Since most IC (Internal Combustion) engines have mechanical oil pumps, that means less friction from the oil pump as well as less friction from the piston rings\cylinder walls. Will 5W-20 adequately lubricate? Yes, under normal driving conditions. Remember that the definition of lubrication in an IC engine is the flow of oil over surfaces, and the majority of engine wear happens upon engine startup. If you drive the vehicle in any motorsport’s environments, you’ll want to use the 5W-30 then. Our cars have nice oil coolers, but they are more oil temperature maintainers then straight coolers. The target oil temperature for engine oil in an IC engine is 212-degree F. So, just because your coolant is up to operating temperature, doesn’t mean your engine oil is. It actually takes your engine oil longer to warm up than your coolant.
Please don’t be taken in by those “Taxi cab fleet” oil testing scenarios. Although it’s a lot of stop and go driving, they run 24/7 so the engine oil is almost always up to operating temperature. In reality, they see less engine wear than your typical daily or less driver does if properly maintained. Any engine that requires 5W something, can use 0W something since it flows better at colder temperatures. Anyone that says they threw a bearing because they switched to 0W something because it was too thin had an engine that was already worn out and ready to grenade. It’s the reason that they started to heat up the engine oil in WWII fighters prior to starting them just to get them to turn over when cold.
Now for the “Synthetic Blend” part. Either use straight conventional oil or straight synthetic oil. A “Synthetic Blend” oil is a waste of money because you never know how much “Synthetic” you are actually getting. In reality, you pay a premium for very little “Synthetic” as there is no standard beyond it has to have some “Synthetic” in it. In the grand scheme of things, “Synthetic” oil is not really cost prohibitive compared to engine hard part failure repair. Even at $15 some a quart for true “Synthetic” motor oil. Seriously, people pay more for bottled filtered tap water.

I’m coming up on 200k miles on my 09 fusion, been using 5w20 and I’ll be honest, I push that car really hard, I don’t drive often like every single day, but when I do drive, I drive hard or either hour trips, and the temperature is very bi polar, very hot or very cold, or even perfect in the middle weather, she runs like a champ, so I’m not sure if switching to 5w30 will help for long term life efficiency, but as the old saying goes “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”😅

That was very interesting but I can’t really give you any long term results cause I’m new to the panther platform. 04 marquis 272000kms Ford 5w20 semi-synthetic. Bought last November at 271000kms. Had the startup rattle a few times but has disappeared lately. 03 marauder 187000kms 5w20 synthetic. I put 8000kms on it then it started the famous dohc head tick and it’s in a million pieces right now. Neither of these cars were running when I bought them so they were not well cared for.

      Yo C Rauder,
      Thanks for the feedback.
BTW, I used the Motorcraft Syn BLEND for 16 years, (2004-2019).
I thought it was "SEMI" as well. It's definitely not. That's part of the reason I switched to 100% full synthetic.
There's nothing wrong with the Motorcraft oil, I would just prefer to know the exact content of synthetic vs. Conventional in my engine oil. The Motorcraft remains to be unknown of its ratio of syn vs conventional "blend".

Well I always enjoy your in depth reviews on the things we need to know. It seems in more recent decades, the heavier weight oils are going the way of the dodo bird. As a kid, I remember my dad consistently stocking his work shop shelf with 10w-40. How times have changed. 5w-20 Is what I use based on what it says on the oil cap. Glad to see that's still right... though that could change. Seems to me that as the oils have turned to more synthetic, the manufacturers have suggested thinner grades? Though I've also heard some people say that as engines age or get miles, you should thicken up to compensate for wear and looser tolerances. I dunno… sometimes I get so many different opinions on something, I don't know what to think anymore.

      Yo John,
Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it.
      I've heard the same thing;
"some people say that as engines age or get miles, you should thicken up to compensate for wear and looser tolerances"
But, how will I know when to implement a strategy to compensate for this wear & looser tolerances?
I'm hoping our resident Panther experts stop in, and shed some light on this matter.

I'm running the 5w-20 conventional in my p71. The manual and oil cap state 5w-20 but not whether it should be synthetic or conventional. All my other cars state "synthetic only". This leads me to believe Ford does not require or even recommend synthetic. There was also an oil sticker on the windshield from the previous owner and it was changed at a quick lube with conventional.
I always though 5w-20 was too thin and now we have better oils. (My BMW requires 0w-40 full synthetic) with no exceptions to be made. I was considering switching the Vic to synthetic because I believe in its superior protection and flow since I've always used it in every other vehicle I've owned since age 18. (Jason from the Engineering Explained you tube channel) did a very good video on conventional vs synthetic and the results speak for themselves. This backs up my results as well.
The weather here in Missouri wildly fluctuates from day to day. Sometimes within the same day. Thus, I believe the 0w-40 application in the BMW is the best to handle the harsh temperature fluctuations. After a valve cover job, I may try 0w-40 or 5w-20 full synthetic in my Vic.

It's all driven by CAFE fuel requirements. I ran full synthetic 5w30 for years in my 93 and 94 Mark VIII's and never had any problems. I run 5w30 in my 2006 Crown Vic. I just don't trust 5w20 in my non cam phaser cars. It's hotter than hell here in Kansas in the summertime. The 4.6 4 valve DOHC and 4.6 2 valve SOHC don't have cam phasers so 5w30 is fine for those engines. I don't have any experience with engines with cam phasers nor do I own any, so I'm not recommending 5w30 for those engines.

I just been wondering this since I took my 04 merc to ford they service it I guess change the oil too cause theres a sticker on it says 5w30 pennzoil but I go with castrol high miles 5w 20 been using it since I got the car. Also the reason I went to ford is cause I found out my blend door actuator went out got the part from A1 autos. Ford was going to charge me 1,200 so I went to my brothers mechanic charged me 550 works fine.

No oil consumption these past 9000 miles I change the oil every 4000 I plan on using the valvoline restore and protect for 5 oil changes then switching to penzoil ultra platinum 5w30

I'm about 6 months late to the discussion...but this video is exactly what I was looking for regarding my 1991 Crown Vic with the 302. I couldn't figure out why each current source told me to use 5w30, but both the shop manual and owner's guide recommended 10w30. I put a 5w30 synblend (Castrol) in at the last oil change, and it does burn oil (approx. a quart every 1,000 miles). Motorcraft Fl-1A filter. The car came from Virginia, and I'm in New Jersey so both fairly temperate climates. The older gentleman I bought it from claimed he always used 5w30 Castrol conventional oil, but this is no longer in production. I'm wondering if I switched to either to conventional or 10w30 (or both) this would remedy or help the problem...can't hurt to try right?

Find out what works best for your intended application.
I have a friend who had a Town Car with that 302 engine, and as the engine wore out he switched to thicker, and thicker oil until there wasn't enough compression to start the engine. The last oil he used was 20W-50.

Hey chuck my advice about engine oil and viscosity
I had my 07 grand marquis from augast 2013 and it had 100k kilometers on the odometer
Right now it has 360k kilometers
I uses 10w30 motorcraft synthetic blend oil last year i have changed the valve stem seals and offcourse i need to remove the valve cover and the engine still looks clean and shiny ( from the inside)
And from my experience i just bought 08 gmc sierra three months ago with 285k kilometers on the odometer the previous owner uses 10w40 oil for long time as i knew from the maintenance stickers , I changed the oil to the recommended viscosity for gm trucks 5w30 and travelled with the truck for 5k kilometers and used it locally for anothe 6 kilometers i have change the oil three times now with the manufacturer recommended viscosity and everything looks ok with the engine so what i want to say is stick with the manufacturer oil viscosity unless you hear non wanted noise from the engine

5w20 is better for p71s, quicker up the pump, most wear on the engine is during cold starts, the faster the oil gets there, the more protection on valvetrains, therefor use 5w20, change every 5k miles, and smile.

I HAD a 99 e150 with the 4.6. It had 33k when i bought it in 02. I put 15w50 M1 in it and changed it every 10k. We sold it in 2018 with over 200k on it, It still ran like watch, no cam chain noise. I ran the 15w50 year round here in Minn, no block heater or garage. It started down to -30f, with not a sound from the motor, just the fan. I had the plugs changed around 100k and at 190k, thats all i had done to the motor.

Shell Rotella T6 is a diesel oil and is not rated by the API for gasoline engines. The only exception would be motorcycles with wet clutches which require a JASO "MA" or "MA2" rated oil, which Shell Rotella is. Do not use this oil in your gasoline-powered automobile.
