This looks really amazing. I will say, I personally do not find the Rode Podmic to be particularly pleasing to the ear and prefer the DCM6 or DCM3 in that price range. I also love a wide shot and wish it would switch to that more frequently.
Mind blown. Thanks guys. Have an ATEM Mini Pro ISO and MixEffect Pro, but didn't know it could do this, nor did we have a need for it. Was just thinking about Descript & other programs ability to auto-cut multicam footage, but that's a lot of storage. Great solution! Ooh. BTW: You list the soft box but not the actual light in your Amazon list.
Yeah I do appreciate the wide view, I’m pretty sure you can set the black magic to switch to the wide view every 30 seconds to a minute. That way you’ll still have it included in the episode
The Blackmagic atem creates a Resolve project that you can adjust in post. I don’t think the files are huge either. For a one and done solution this looks good.
I used OBS to switch cameras between speakers automatically with a plug-in that detected the speaker and switched after a .1 second delay and I set a noise floor to account for ambient noise and breathing. It was pretty slick. I didn't use HDMI inputs thoigh, just USB cameras. If I had multiple cameras, I'd use an ATEM or some sort of switchboard, too. For my input, I used a Rodecaster Pro and 4 Pod Mics.
I love the idea. Amazing for a one man band. The only thing is that lets say in Joe Rogan's podcast, what makes it amazing, its that the camera doesn't just film whoever speaks but the reaction of the other person which creates more depth and makes it more entertaining.
Great tip using MixEffect to auto cut the cameras. Definitely great for a first pass. I would definitely recommend doing a second pass to make sure you capture all the reaction shots and wide shots when needed. But great resource for the first pass. Thanks!
This is very nice for live settings. When you edit in Davinci this was already an option with scripts in post. And I think it's a plus to have at least 2 camera angles of speakers in case you want to slip edit audio and not show the person speaking

Thank you so much for this. This means the world to me. Also, is there a video you’ve made or would be willing to make that walks the person through setting up every one of these things? I would watch it extensively and share it with everyone. I know that wants to create a podcast which is all my clients.
Guys, I want to setup this exact setup you just described in the home podcast studio I'm creating. Will you please explain a more detailed workflow of how to do this? (What plugs in where? What are those app settings you referenced dialing in? etc) The only change from your setup is we are going to be running the 3-4 mics into our Zoom H6 device (since we already have it). SETUP: 3-4 Sony a6400 cameras, 3-4 XLR mics, the Zoom H6 audio interface, going to buy the Atem Mini Pro + any other necessary gear (hopefully on black friday). If you could help me understand all this I would be supremely grateful... Thank you!
Autopod looks nice and works with Resolve now but it is a bit spendy. Would be nice to have a fixed non subscription based setup, higher initial cost but nothing ongoing.
Can you talk about the settings you are using for the mics? I use the same mics but if we sit that close together it becomes echoey, because our voices are being picked up in each other’s mics. (I know it’s not the room because if we are a few feet apart it’s not echoey)
pics should point out to each other so each speaker IS in the dead spot of the other mic. then fine tune the gain for each mic (as little gain as possible) and then use a gate plugin to automatically cut the mic when the speaker isnt talking into it.
Yes of course, the Atem Mini has an hdmi out for monitoring and it displays all camera feeds in your typical switcher layout. The Atem also has a USB-C output where I use a simple SD card reader and SD card to record the final output.
this may be a silly question, So you have to have the audio runnning to the cameras to be able to auto switch ? you can't just have the audio coming into atem with 3.5 from an audio board correct ? or can you?
With the video follows audio function (VFA) it’s all based on “if this then that” logic. I have one mic to L channel and one mic to R channel. Based on the db, it will switch between cameras based on the logic I setup. It should be possible with any type of input as long as you have discreet channels for each speaker.

Yeah that’s one of the reasons I don’t use a traditional audio board or mixer for this setup. Of course it all depends on how many mics you’re running and how many channels you’re feeding to the Atem.

I’m sure there is but I’ve never been happy with the solutions running multiple cameras into a computer.
