I found out from the bit where they talked about the "new " Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, which first launched in 2004. However, now I'm left curious. Is there any way for me to see the information from the number plate as someone outside the UK?
The older Espace was pre-NCAP. I owned two years ago, the 1st was the older shape on a N plate. At the time it was 8 years old. It turned out the bulkhead was so rotten that the clutch cable mounting plate had gone through it and there was a gapping hole in the bulkhead. Apparently water from the windscreen drains down the bulkhead and rots them and was a common issue. Watching that thing in the clip, I can understand why that front wheel went through into the cabin. We scrapped ours and lost a lot of money.
I almost had a Voyager... But I saw the crash test and just NOPED right out of the deal. Got an Espace III instead, served me well until got replaced... with an Espace IV, which was so greay, that I've had it until last year :D
Well that's what the entire idea of this orchestra was to do... To eliminate critical thinking on the matter. If it had happened at normal speed, there would be nothing to be concerned about. Slowing everything down and overly dramatising it, is what scars people mentally. I once fractured my skull, but I'm not traumatized by it, because it happened so quickly and unexpectedly. The same with almost having broken my arm. "I'm scaring you for your own good", is what an abuser or ignorant person says, so you can take it from me, that you can ignore that "advice", and drive whichever automobile you wish. I stupidly recorded this episode of 5th Gear years ago and fell for it. It took YEARS of deprogramming, to eventually clear the air and dismiss the mindset it was putting me in. Really quite evil.
The newer car didn’t think the crash was hard enough to deploy its airbags but it did think hard enough to at least give the driver a serious whiplash as his head hit the steering.
I was a Renault Espace used to smuggle fuel between the Kingdom of Morocco and Algeria And the police don't bother chasing after her because they won't be able to catch her
I stupidly owned two Espaces. We used to joke that our last one ought to have had 6 star NCAP rating.. It's very difficult to actually have an accident in something that was permanently broken. To have had the chance to smash either of ours up would've been lovely....
What's "stupid" is falling for the "scare propaganda" this television orchestration scarred its viewers with. I did *at the time,* and it took literally YEARS, to get back out of it. This entire article, was evil.
We had the same new Renault, and I still remember our last drive. We were at a football match and halfway on the way home it started to knock very hard, by the time we reached our Grandparents house it sounded like a tractor, once we shut it off it didn't start ever again. We also opened the hood before shutting off, if the engine wasn't bolted down it would literally run away, that thing was shaking so bad. Later Grandpa said the engine is locked up. We had that car for a short time. We then bought a VW Passat B6 which has been in our Family for 6 years already. And has 220+tkm.
One thing that should be taken into account is the weight gap. The Espace IV is about half a ton heavier than the older one, and that played a huge part in the outcome of the crash beyond the simple structure of the cars
Me with a Dacia 1310 from 2002 that has no airbags, no ABS, no ESP, the car likely compresses into the passangers in case of a crash and to top it off, the back middle seat doesn't have a seatbelt. It does have headrests and safety glass tho. God help me and everyone else in it stay safe, you too guys, no matter what you drive :)
Well, i have seen a 1970's Mercedes crash head to head into a modern Toyota at fairly low speed... The Toyota was very dead (bumper, lights, both front wings, radiator & co all crushed) and the Mercedes just drove home with just a few scratches on license plate & bumper.
Of course, an average 1990 car is already far better than an average 1960 car. Colliding a 1957 Chevy with any decent 1990 unibody car results in the ‘57 being destroyed in a way that would kill its occupants, and the ‘90 not faring badly at least by comparison.
@@davekennedy6315 No, it wouldn't be unrecognizable. The damage on the new car would still not be severe, and it would be very survivable. It would just use the old car as a crumple zone. Go watch the Renault Laguna from 2001 crash into a CONCRETE WALL at 112 km/h (like 70 mph), the A-pillars don't even get damaged yet. These cars are incredibly strong. Basically, to the point where even if you crashed them into another car at like 120 mph, they passenger cell would still be structurally stable. In fact, there's videos on youtube too where people crash cars at 200 km/h into stationary parked vehicles, and you would be surprised how little damage the cars moving at 200 km/h have, less than in this video. That is so for the simple fact that the faster the new car is moving, the more energy it will smash the stationary car with, and more easily crumple it up. Cars don't stop suddenly in those crashes, the push the older lighter car away while also compressing them a lot, absorbing a lot of that energy.
You should do a new test to show what happens to a 5 star Renault when it gets into a small overlap crash. EuroNCap refuses to test it, so European car makers don't care to improve crash protection for this very common type of crash. Or.. Test what happens to a regular Polo when it crashes into a 2500kg Tesla. Extremely heavy electric vehicles are very dangerous for lighter gas powered cars.
Listened to it at 2x speed, at 2:18 it sounded like VBH was saying "Watch 2 fanny wagons crash head on", odd choice of words I thought till I slowed it back to 1x and realised she was saying "family wagons".
the black car kept rolling after the impact not only due to crumple zones but also because with all those security features in place it's probably much heavier
i thinking,,, old car hitting old car, might be more worse than hitting a new car right? because newer car have more crumple zone to absorbs the energy, where hitting older car is both hard shell without much crumple zone?
No, old cars are much softer, because they where not built for crash safety. New cars have very strong passenger compartment, and regardless of the crumple zones, it is much worse to crash into a new car than into an old car. With old cars, the whole car is a crumple zone, for the car that crashes into it.
You need to understand the difference between strength and rigidity. Old cars had some strength and basically no rigidity. So it took some energy to damage them, but once you did it, they would start crumbling like paper. New cars have a lot of strength and extreme rigidity. So even the parts designed to crumble are stronger than old cars were, whereas parts that are designed not to crumble, like the passenger cabin, are incredibly rigid, and basically would never be severely damaged in a crash against another car.
@@DashCamSerbia Old European cars are much softer. And 1995 isn't "old", I'd call it more like aged then actually old. Now 70s maybe 80s you can consider old but when people refer to tough cars its mostly the 70s and before because they were all steel framed cars with steel fender and steel anything they could make for the most part. In the 80s things really just turned to plastic and and sheet metal and quantity of quality. Now take a 1930 Plymouth sedan vs these pieces of junk or a 70s f150 250 or 350 and you'll really get to watch those new crumple zones work. But 80s-90s European and American were these plastic dinky cars that really didn't have much going for them.
@@kyleranderson1948So your saying a 90 year old car is safer than a MK3 Espace? That 9mm round lodged in your prefrontal cortex is on the move again.
Damn... I drive around in a Vauxhall nova and a mk2 fiesta. Didn’t realise the difference was so significant from old cars to new. I don’t even have an airbag lol
@@lastp6905 Do you still have your MK2 Vauxhall Cavalier 1981-1989 ... I had one many moons ago.. These old classic cars are true "Death traps" if you were to crash against a new car with stiffer body shells. I know I have an old Toyota Celica and it is probably as safe as a supermarket trolley in a serious crash.
Up to 2003 the Renault Espace had the ladder chassis from the 1970's Matra Rancho (one of the first SUV's in Europe). The old one may have been from the mid 1990's but structurally it had more in common with a 1970's truck or a typical 1960's car. A 1970's Mercedes W114 would have probably faired better than the old Espace (though probably still lethal). To say this about 1990's cars in general is a big claim and it would have been a more fair comparison if they used a '90's Laguna and a 2004 one. Otherwise they could have used two Meganes but as they already stated the 1998 Megane had 4 stars so it wouldn't have the dramatic effect.
Was anyone else left unconvinced by the crash guys explanation that the car decided airbags shouldn't go off? Yet in the slow mo you can clearly see the dummy headbutting the steering wheel 🤦♀️🤔
You can clearly see the dummy DOESN'T hit the steering wheel, also, dummies move way more in crashes than humans do, because they're just sitting there, whereas humans tighten up their muscles and actively go through the crash, not limp like a dummy. Dummies are purposefully designed to simulate worst-case scenario, as if a person was totally passively sitting in the seat. Secondly, the car was in neutral (for towing), and in neutral, the airbags won't go off because the car didn't even know it was moving, they probably took the battery out as well. No hazard lights came on after the crash either.
I can see the point you're making. But it doesn't make sense to me that when a lot of the safety features (pre tensioners as an example) would rely on electronically controlled sensors and computers and probably motors too for the pre tensioners themselves, that they would take the battery out and compromise those safety features, when they are actually trying to ascertain the safety of the car?
so let me say the quiet part out loud. What if the damage would have been survivable if two older cars had hit each other then does it not stand to reason that two new , stiffer cars are far more dangerous to the passengers given that the forces would have been both balanced and the cars are stiffer?
Stop the conspiracy phrasing, of course it will be different with two modern cars, but the occupants would still have a much better chance of surviving
They never consider that not only will the driver be bracing themselves with the steering wheel ( natural human reaction ) but also , the leg will be hard against the brake pedal creating forces never tested by current testing standards
Oh dear, my "new" car is older than the old car in this old programme (it's a 1994 Toyota Celica). Then don't even think about my 1972 Hillman Avenger. Perhaps a good thing I don't have to drive either very much.
Now imagine that NEW car vs a new car today. Even bigger of a difference. Or, a normal city hatch, something like Golf, C4 or Megane vs some big and heavy cars like a Land Cruiser or GLS...
No, it wouldn't be as big of a difference. From 2004 to today, car safety didn't go up much. New cars are maybe 20-30 % more rigid than those in 2004. Whereas the difference between an Espace from 2004 and one from the 90's or 80's was like 200-300% less rigidity and strength. Passive safety didn't advance as much as active systems, prevention systems, etc.

@@DashCamSerbia It doesn't matter, the difference in G-forces is very small here, both cars stop suddenly. In fact, if you account for the much higher level of deformation in the old car, it compensates for the lack of weight and still slows down more gently than if it was more rigid.
The difference in mass and rigidity between the 2 vehicles is highly significant in this experiment, the new heavier vehicle as able to decelerate at a lower pace to zero as it hit a much softer object, therefore the g forces were much less in the new vehicle at point of impact due to the older car literally cushioning the blow. Invert this and you'll understand why the older car fared much worse in this experiment. Due to the differences in mass, momentum and the change of energy it's simpler to say the older car had a crash at 40mph and the new car at 30mph. Had the new car crashed into a solid brick wall instead of a fluffy old soccer mom car its damage would have been more significant, but less interesting television.

I stupidly owned two Espaces. We used to joke that our last one ought to have had 6 star NCAP rating.. It's very difficult to actually have an accident in something that was permanently broken. To have had the chance to smash either of ours up would've been lovely....

Does anyone else think the driver of the new car looked a bit smug?
We had the same new Renault, and I still remember our last drive. We were at a football match and halfway on the way home it started to knock very hard, by the time we reached our Grandparents house it sounded like a tractor, once we shut it off it didn't start ever again. We also opened the hood before shutting off, if the engine wasn't bolted down it would literally run away, that thing was shaking so bad. Later Grandpa said the engine is locked up. We had that car for a short time. We then bought a VW Passat B6 which has been in our Family for 6 years already. And has 220+tkm.
Steel body car meets fibreglass body car. Are we surprised at the result?
One thing that should be taken into account is the weight gap. The Espace IV is about half a ton heavier than the older one, and that played a huge part in the outcome of the crash beyond the simple structure of the cars
Nonsense, the modern car's much stiffer.
I wonder how that new van would fare against the 60 Buick

It's never about the cars's survivability, it's about driver survivability. In your example, Toyota did its job.

@@MinecraftPro97k yes they are boring
my Clio 1.2 16v was an oddball example made on a Friday afternoon and still managed 97mph and 0-60 in 14 secs
Of course, an average 1990 car is already far better than an average 1960 car. Colliding a 1957 Chevy with any decent 1990 unibody car results in the ‘57 being destroyed in a way that would kill its occupants, and the ‘90 not faring badly at least by comparison.
Start at 5:40
Well that was an overall 70mph impact, but that is pretty shocking
Well you are wrong
They used to say that you combined both speeds to find the impact speed, that is obviously very wrong. So this is just two 35 mph impacts.
70 mph impacts are very, very different. The old car would have been completely destroyed, the new car would have been unrecognisable (but survivable)
@@davekennedy6315 Ah ok thanks that's what I thought originally
Listened to it at 2x speed, at 2:18 it sounded like VBH was saying "Watch 2 fanny wagons crash head on", odd choice of words I thought till I slowed it back to 1x and realised she was saying "family wagons".
cool story
Get a job.
The reason Renault Espace crashes so much is because its outer body is made of fiberglass
the black car kept rolling after the impact not only due to crumple zones but also because with all those security features in place it's probably much heavier
i thinking,,,
old car hitting old car, might be more worse than hitting a new car right?
because newer car have more crumple zone to absorbs the energy, where hitting older car is both hard shell without much crumple zone?

@@lastp6905 Do you still have your MK2 Vauxhall Cavalier 1981-1989 ... I had one many moons ago..
These old classic cars are true "Death traps" if you were to crash against a new car with stiffer body shells.
I know I have an old Toyota Celica and it is probably as safe as a supermarket trolley in a serious crash.
just to mention the old espace is made of fiberglass where the new one is steel !

Yeah I think he does lol.
What he’s saying is correct The dummy didn’t actually hit the steering wheel so they won’t really needed
I want to see what happens if you crash a series land rover
The body panel were fibreglass. I used to work at a Renault car sales dealership
Old mucsle car vs new car, thats fun to watch
The only problem with an old muscle car vs a new muscle car, is that both cars will be expensive, probably too expensive for the shows budget
People want safe cars yet they hop on a motorbike in the weekend.
This is 1450 kg vs 1750 kg weight. 300 kg more.
so let me say the quiet part out loud.
Yeah, if the driver has time to react
This test isn't scientific
In front collision weight of car is the most important the less weighted car will take the maximum damage

Whats the weight difference between the two? probably 500kg heavier than it used to be which partly causes the results
It is a common misconseption thinking that heavier vehicle will deform less. During impact kinetic energy is divided in half for each vehicle.
@@NoName-md5zb But G-forces are higher in a lighter car. A heavier car crashing into a lighter car, the heavier car will stil continue to move forward a cetain distance after collision, while lighter car will stop at the spot, and then move in the opposite direction. Huge G-forces in a lighter car.
@@DashCamSerbia It doesn't matter, the difference in G-forces is very small here, both cars stop suddenly. In fact, if you account for the much higher level of deformation in the old car, it compensates for the lack of weight and still slows down more gently than if it was more rigid.
@@derbigpr500 I am not talking about these two cars. I am talking in general. And the difference, if it happens as I described, is huge.

@@pip5461 "You obviously weren't paying much attention in your physics lectures..." - How ironic. It's funny how the dumber someone is, the more confident they are in their lack of knowledge. Two cars hitting each other at 35 mph means they both went from 35 mph to 0, therefore, it's a 35 mph crash from the perspective of each car. In no way is it the same as a 70 mph crash, where a car would stop from 70 mph to 0 instantly.
