You are right, the big companies like n-cap and IIHS need to do these tests to make sure the car won't crumple and be able to hurt a person, like the old renault.
+bocckoka I`d like to disagree with you here. And i`ll present you an illustrational example. I recently fixed two Benz E350 W212, one had a crash on the highway full speed into a concrete barrier alongside the road (no deformation zones except own ones in the driven car) and the other one forgot to brake and slammed into a parked car (where both cars have deformation zones to loosen the impact forces). The 1st one had all bags popped out while the other one had none of them activated. Reason was simple - the primitive sensors that "decide" to send a signal to the bags (when their contacts are pushed together) are further under the shell as some previous models had. The reason is simple. The more a car companys technology advances the further back they can place those sensors because they invented a way how to reduce impact forces throu deformation and energy transfer. Modern cars are in many places not welded but glued together which allows you to negotiate with a lot of incomming force better than with a welded car, where all the welding makes the car a complete solid build. The glue makes it a partially solid build with "gum" spots if I may say so. Add new ways of deformation zones and where a later model would shoot out the bags a newer model would not simply because its sensors would not be activated. Side problem of glued cars - when you crash one the glue may as well be some sort of noise and wind isolation around the car (double purpose - holding the car as a piece and isolate unwanted elements) you may have a hard time restoring it back to its previous state. Welding is also a problem if you do not clean the parts well which involves taking a lot appart from a vehicle. In some time it will be virtually impossible to fix a car yourself but that is exactly what car producers are aiming for - more revenue from already sold products. Besides from that better car companies have already calculated which fixes throw the most money in and it is not only safer for the passengers if the car does not need to pop a bag but also faster for a dealership to fix a damaged car without the need of chaning explosive equipment (regulations, rules of engagement, possible injuries to workers....) where simple metal work is cheaper, faster and all in one pretty safe. Not to mention the bigger revenue from metal parts over air bags. PS: I am not talking about brands and how one brand can have a bad car that is less than 3 years old and another that may be easy 15, 20 years old and still have better results.
+John Crusader no. the control algorithm does try to evaluate the severity of the collosion and does consider a variety of factors, but in this case the driver's head hit the SW, so it should have had fired at least to half capacity. so it's either the failure of this given system or a fucked up application (I mean the platform software's). the first case seems more probable to me.
+bocckoka There's no such thing as 'half capacity' when it comes to airbags. I don't know exactly how it works but it uses an explosive to inflate the airbag at such a fast rate. Also I highly doubt it has any kind of algorithm and instead deploys when a senor tells it to. An algorithm would take way too much time to consider all the factors and then come up with an outcome to then deploy the airbags. When you're dealing with high speed crashes a computer is quite slow. You can see that the airbags deploy in the other car nearly as soon as it hits it.
+TangoNation If you have no clue about an issue, you should stay quiet. The Automotive Handbook released in *2000* by BOSCH talks about reduced inflation in case of out of position passangers (yes, the *algorithm* even considers that). There is time for an algorithm to decide and fire even in the case of side airbags. Educate yourself, please.
bocckoka That was a but harsh wasn't it? If every one stayed quiet about stiff they had no clue on, democracy would't work, no one would vote because the majority have no clue on politics. Oh by the way, sorry for not being an expert on the function of an airbag system in any car and for simply expressing my opinion....
The fastest tank I know of is the old Panzer tank. Even then, she topped out at 40 mph so roll on national speed limit and at the controls I'd be nothing more than my own worst enemy.
Ideally the airbags should have deployed in the newer espace, I'm guessing it is equipped with dual stage airbags, should have deployed the lower force stage to cushion the impact reducing the forces on the front occupants neck and chest. As a result the driver struck the steering wheel which would probably cause concussion.
+6770connor Nope. There was no head impact, dunno where you saw that. Went through a 35MPH head-on crash with a 5 star Renault Modus myself, it didn't feel worse than falling off my bike when I was a kid. I would've been seriously pissed if the airbags would have deployed, most likely they would have caused more serious injury than the crash itself. Airbags are life saving devices, they're not there to protect you from scratches, bruises and pain. If the impact is not strong enough to kill you, they should stay where they belong. A big thank you for the guys at Renault, they really know what they're doing. Now I know what make my next car will be.
+Ri Max Indeed, I've heard stories where the airbags deployed when they shouldn't have. Hands and wrists will be burned and you slam into an airbag while you wouldn't have hit the steering wheel.
I'm talking about the frontal ones. Side airbags are a whole other thing, side impacts are nasty and can easily be deadly, as there's not much to protect the people inside the car that's being hit.
+Ri Max don't think you misunderstood my last comment. The Megane drove into the Mondeo (frontal impact) at 30 mph and deployed both front driver and passenger airbags.
+RR Olsen (NooBeeNaut) if the both have 5 stars , the result will be the same + or - . The passengers will be safe for espace and volvo. the espace 4 is relatively intact in this shock , it s very good
even a fiat or a lada with 5 stars will have not more damages than a volvo 5 stars. The physics is the same for everybody. It's just scientific and logic. i would not put my money on the volvo or another brand.
+Tyler Baugh That's because a dummy is just a dummy, a real person wouldn't hit the steering because you'd tense up your muscles as hard as you could as a reflex. You can also see in euroncap crashes that dummies always hit the B pillar with the back of their head, that also doesn't happen in a real situation. Dummies always move more freely than an actual person would, that's how they're designed, and that actually makes the crash tests much harder to pass for cars. You can see that in many examples, watch crashes in motorsport, watch even the crash that top gear did with the man crashing at 35 mph in a Renault Megane, and he didn't even touch the airbag with his head because he pushed himself away from the steering. Airbags are designed for worst case scenarios, so are the crash dummies, they're actually set up to simulate a fairly relaxed body. Also, this crash was fairly mild for the new Espace, it basically used the old car as a big crumple zone and it stopped fairly softly. It definitely wasn't like hitting a wall at 35 mph, the forces in the new Espace were probably more comparable to hitting a wall at 20 mph.
+derbigpr500 Erm if you tense up for muscles, i dont care if you're Brock Lesnar, going from 35mph to basically zero will force your head into the wheel. Holding your arms out would snap your arms like twigs and then your head smashes into the wheel. The new car fucked up by not deploying air bags
+Против Глобал you can continuously tell me it's not but I can see that he does stuck the wheel. I've watched it repeatedly and hand on heart can say he hit the wheel.
The second laguna had 5 stars and looks pretty strong. Better hurry up doing those tests because those cars are getting extinct due electrical problems ahah
That is a Renault Espace MK2 model which was in production from 1991 until 1996 crashing into a Renault Espace MK4 model which was in production from 2002 until 2014
Let's see: this is an Espace 2 and they stopped making it in 1997. They say it is 9 years old, so the video is from no later than 2006. They also have the Espace 4 as a new car, it came out in 2002, so the original video was shown on TV somewhere between 2002 and 2006.
@Audi A7 : An Espace is not an SUV. There is a big difference. You got to keep in mind, there are two version of the Espace. Standard version and the bigger (longer) Grand Espace. Only a Mercedes V-Class (or Viano in Generation II) or a VW MultiVan were more expensive back then. Still, the Espace has always been one of the best vans since its invention back in the 80s. Renault showed the way when VW was producing old-fashioned stuff. There would never havebeen a Vito, Viano, Galaxy or Sharan, if the Espace had not happened and been successful in times when vans were niche cars.
Well, the good new is, these more crash worthy cars, are now the budget used cars. I recently purchased a used 2011 Subaru Outback for about $10,000usd. It received a top safety pick from the IIHS, and 5 stars, from ANCAP. So, yeah. Not really survival of the richest anymore.

Excuse me upload full episodes of series 13 series 14 series 15 series 16 series 17 series 18 series 19 series 20 series 21 series 22 and series 23 of fifth gear on TH-cam please?
I wonder what would happen if you crashed a 1998 Toyota Sienna into a 2003 Renault espace? Because the iihs said that the sienna was the best performing car that they had tested at that time.
Why is Noone mentioning that the newer espace is completely turned off. Of course the airbags don't fire when the ignition is off. Usually the hazards should come on too And the front display should also show warning lights
Does make me wonder though - if the stiffer cars meant that in collision with an older car, the occupants of the older car were less likely to survive, did the stiffer car really save lives, or just change who died?
Well in the long run they are going to save lives as there are less and less cars from the old era out on the roads. Nowadays that espace is a fairly old car and it would still probably do fine against a new car
+fifth gear that was a valid test but i have seen worse crashes in and around my area and the occupants still survived and im sure the driver could have survived although he or she would have been in really bad shape as you said
Ben Wilde so you are saying you are an expert are you? Use your brain, apply logic, should the airbags go off if they are fitted? And when they don't maybe the equipment was poor
The airbag on my 1996 Fiesta went off in a crash exactly like this one (driver's side to driver's side) and I didn't even need the airbag! In fact, I did need it... to keep my glasses on my face!
I notice this video has fewer dislikes than most amateur crash test videos. Apparently the "[insert my favorite SUV/wagon] couldn't have possibly lost, you most have taken out the engine and chopped up the frame" crowd of alternative facts morons have no dog in the minivan fight. Minivans don't really have any blind fanbois who love them on an emotional level, so there's nobody to trigger.
cars should really have more ground clerance for safety as a protruding object in the road sticking upwards could cause a vehicle to get hung up on it. think how little ground clearance cars have
If an airbag goes off if you crash at 15mph or hit a water barrel, your car thinks it’s in a Hollywood movie. The computer is smart and knows not to deploy the airbag for no reason.
Should have chosen two full-metal cars (The older Espace had plastic body/steel frame construction). Plastic car vs full metal car - the outcome is obvious.
Trouble is the old espace's were pretty crap back In the day seen several years ago against even a flimsy escort and the Renault wasn't that great 20 years ago against a "pop can metal" ford escort at the time
35 + 35 head on collision is a 70 mile per hour hit so if both of those older Vans hit each other at that speed both of the crash test drivers might have died
@@ToyotaCorollaLE2020 instead of using a new minivan versus a old minivan I'm saying if they were both old vans if they were both the same they both would have had the same amount of damage they both hit each other at 35 miles an hour which is a 70 mile-an-hour hit now does it make sense
An Airbag costs between $700-$1,000 just for one. A plastic Jesus (or Buddha!) costs about $7 dollars. Put the Deity of choice on the dashboard and say your prayers... When I was a kid some 50+ years ago we said our prayers and didn't even have seatbelts. If you are agnostic or atheist you shouldn't even fear the blank eternity death brings. You really won't care one bit. Drive a '55 Mercury in childhood and you will think ALL the safety stuff is just a hand wringer's way of dealing with the World's dangers. In the End it doesn't even matter.
0:20 Never done on TV before? Bunkum & Rubbish! The Mythbusters have done this kind of test several times on their show. The goals of the tests may have been different, but the tests themselves were conducted in very much the same fashion.
its kinda crap testing because if you are in a crash you're likely to slam brakes on but in this test no breaks are used intresting . i have had a head on with a van at 60 mph according to the policer my car went 20 backwards
Even Ferrari makes these tests cuz they need to be done but do you realize that they make like four test for a new model they allways test a brand new car and if they don't figure out something they crash another and another until they find out and then after they fix the issue they crash another .These cars worth at least 100k EUR in Romania (my country) can you imagine how much money some companies lose just for you safety? We should pay more respect to them
The newer car is bigger and heavier than the old so it pushed the old car backwards, making the deceleration less severe, which is why the airbags didn't fire. If it was a crash between two new cars of equal weight I bet they would have done.

You are right, the big companies like n-cap and IIHS need to do these tests to make sure the car won't crumple and be able to hurt a person, like the old renault.
But they do, although they don't make it AS public as other crash tests. One I'd recommend is the 2000 Camry vs the 2015 Honda Fit.
i think it wasn't a decision not to open airbags, it was a failure.

The computer is smart and knows not to deploy the airbag for no reason.
2018 anybody?

Dont try this a home, try this on a two lane highway.
Should be worried when the airbags didn't deploy
Should have chosen two full-metal cars (The older Espace had plastic body/steel frame construction). Plastic car vs full metal car - the outcome is obvious.
This isn't Fifth Gear, its a Renault advert
Trouble is the old espace's were pretty crap back In the day seen several years ago against even a flimsy escort and the Renault wasn't that great 20 years ago against a "pop can metal" ford escort at the time
note: why the old one did BAD? well.. DON'T ASK
Just 35mph impact 😌 no biggie should just be able to Wiggle the door and be LIKE YEAH HE DEAD
6:56 A bit graphic, eh?
35 + 35 head on collision is a 70 mile per hour hit so if both of those older Vans hit each other at that speed both of the crash test drivers might have died
Doesn’t make sense at all.....
In the End it doesn't even matter.
randy109 I seriously hope you’re joking.
I've got a 2016 (66 plate) Audi A5 and you say a 2003 espace is new ?
This video was shot around 2004/5....it was new at the time!
my 1390391830948TH TIME COMING BACK TO WACH THIS VIDEO i love crash tests
the video starts at 3:20
airbag?
that wasnt even head on, they dont want you t know what an actual head on will do.

Offset is worse than a head on
So hey smash it into re espace which was primarily made with plastic body panels and lots of rust.
Now time for that new car vs a nokia phone
Newer Espace everytime, safer, better and more modern.
Warning:Do Not Try This In Car
0:20 Never done on TV before? Bunkum & Rubbish! The Mythbusters have done this kind of test several times on their show. The goals of the tests may have been different, but the tests themselves were conducted in very much the same fashion.
Well, it was recorded in 2004
+Bunta Fujiwara Opps, didn't notice that... My bad.

Try old Mercedes Benz vs classic Mercedes Benz.
Los retrovisores del carro rojo están muy adelanté que raro? Saludos desde Panamá😎
its kinda crap testing because if you are in a crash you're likely to slam brakes on but in this test no breaks are used intresting .
i have had a head on with a van at 60 mph according to the policer my car went 20 backwards
espace VS locomotive
Somehow the Espace tears through the Locomotive, and only has a dent in the bumper.
Right here, boss. I know it's Top Gear, not Fifth Gear.

00:11 cool
volvo 965 vs v70III
+VolvoSafety Xc90 vs renault 5.
The airbag should have deployed
Yeah that's why older cars are abit slower...... Time for an 2018 plate crash test lol and the air bags should of went off....
The red one was at a different angle and took more of the energy, not a fair test.
Wrong.
@@Gavichap OK dung fungus
@@slooob23 Ok amoeba.
@@Gavichap I'm glad we had this chat
Espace good strong car
most likely would the newer car been for service because its bad owner schould be in an old garage lend car
New car is simply better I think
tiff was on top gear
Even Ferrari makes these tests cuz they need to be done but do you realize that they make like four test for a new model they allways test a brand new car and if they don't figure out something they crash another and another until they find out and then after they fix the issue they crash another .These cars worth at least 100k EUR in Romania (my country) can you imagine how much money some companies lose just for you safety? We should pay more respect to them
The production cost is always way less than the price tag on those cars
The newer cars airbags are broken!
Basically old cars are unsafe, and new cars are safe, but just don't buy the Renault Espace since the airbags suck.
The airbags didn't need to deploy. It slowed down more gently than the old Espace. That old Espace was another crumple zone.
The newer car is bigger and heavier than the old so it pushed the old car backwards, making the deceleration less severe, which is why the airbags didn't fire. If it was a crash between two new cars of equal weight I bet they would have done.
depressing
the old renault espace could very destroyed than the new renault car
