    I had to do deliveries for my workplace a year or so back while another employee was on medical leave.
    Driving a typical Chevy van, I had a payload of heavy steel in the back. Coming down a hill, I had to slam on the breaks when a car ran a light. I was able to stop, but the load didn't.
    It kept moving until it slammed into the back of my seat. There was no barrier between the back and the front.
    It was absolutely jarring. It cracked the bottom of my seat. It killed my back.

      +Salvatore Aversa Yes that is a bad situation, and it's not just in vans. Something heavy in the boot of a car can break through the rear seats in a collision and inflict severe or fatal injuries on the driver and passenger. I hope your whiplash recovers quickly and completely...

    A 1 ton load of sand is not "a typical payload", no way. You get sand like that delivered off a truck with a crane. Rarely do builders carry it.

    • @Daumex
      @Daumex 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      They meant a 1 tonne cargo is a typical payload, not sand.

    • @vistron888
      @vistron888 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Nor would 1 ton of anything be typical be it sand or other materials. There would be a substantial difference in damage on what you're carrying even if the weight was the same as a whole.

    • @randy109
      @randy109 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You are right. I've worked with Contractors and hauled everything imaginable. Once I shoveled about 800 pounds of decorative rock into a nearly new Ford 1/2 ton pickup. Almost drug the tail and could have busted the suspension quite easily. A full TON of sand would break the back of almost any full sized pickup or van. "Ratings" are sometimes quite wishful thinking in the real world.

    a good van driver knows that the load needs to be against the barrier and Always needs to be strapped down, i knew from the start when they put in that big bag of sand that would happen... if they put the bag more towards the barrier or against the barrier ther would be more weight on the frontwheels and that would press the nose down a bit more and than you had a bit less chance for the van to override the passat.. but still it would push the passat back like this because of the totall mass of the van + load...

    in my opinion all vans should have a metal wall between the seats and the land area

      +EpicbigM xx we had a van and that had a metal wall between the cabin and rear load space and also had a car ram us off the road a few weeks ago and because everything was bolted down securely not much apart from screws moved apart from a box of tools which snapped the wood, without the wall no doubt we would have been hurt by the tools in the rear.

      +RandomShitKing - RSK which ever family member bought that van was clever and wise to buy one With a solid metal wall

    one of my mates knows a guy who drove head on into a building, he was driving a Ssangyong Rexton, a big 4x4 thingy. he hit a steel pillar in the building at about 85 mph, he walked away from the accident, but there was several screwdrivers stuck in the dashboard beside him, they came from an open toolbox in the back of the car.

      85 mph hit a steel pillar and he walked away from the accident ?
      I seriously doubt it .

    • @SIMcityplayer2002
      @SIMcityplayer2002 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not possible, unless it was a very weak steel pillar, or... well, that's all that could have saved him from being crushed and getting his brain + other internal organs crushed and smashed against his bones.

    • @premiumaxel
      @premiumaxel 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      well if it wasnt posible then he wouldnt be alive today, nobody ever said that there was no luck involved.

      Dude, at 85mph there would be nothing left from that vehicle but forget about that.
      The g force alone would kill him instantly.

    That’s why Vans & HGV’s have slower speed limits than cars & coaches.

    So in this particular type of impact, the occupants of the car would have been worse off as the car was pushed backwards on impact. This is assuming that the van had no load in the rear and air bags fitted.

    • @cnwd3295
      @cnwd3295 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but that didn't happen and also the van was carrying 1000kg of extra force. I have a feeling everybody would die in this situation.
