lil garbage disposal Listening to her talk on Chapo Trap House kinda explains her position. She seems really out there but she just seems to have rebranded a lot of socialist points into her sort of “spirituality.” So she’s pretty far left although her speech really just makes her positions seem strange.

They did it with the hippies in the 60's, then the tree huggers in the 80's and 90's and now the climate change activists. This disdain so colors their perceptions, they can't see the intelligence and righteousness of the person or their cause. They embrace the status quo, even if they aren't benefitting from it in the hopes that at some point in the future, they will be on top of the dung heap. They aren't just low information voters, they have no interest or curiosity beyond their own comforts and entertainments. @Jessie James "in spite of" doesn't mean what you think it means. It means, "not stopped by", "regardless of". i.e. it's a synonym of "despite".
Anything worthwhile in that discussion happened because of Dave's guest, DESPITE his contribution and not because of it. Dave tried to undermine the notion of slavery being akin to the holocaust and therefore attempted (either knowingly or unwittingly) to propagate misinformation about slavery and the argument for reparations. In other words, the man is a dangerous idiot.
Edit: also Marianne Williamson was a candidate for the Democratic primary at the time of this interview. She wasn't brought on by Dave exclusively to talk about slavery and reparations. She was brought on to give his show some credibility and also so he could ignorantly question someone on "the left" about various polices and positions which he clearly can't wrap his head around. Williamson made him look every inch the idiot he truly is and so yes, she totally dunked on him.

You guys were a little unclear on some of the facts on reparations. The fact is, reparations have been paid to pretty much everyone who has a grievance against America, except blacks. The following is a post of mine from another TYT Network clip:
So let's talk America for a bit...
Human beings of African origin were trafficked and held in bondage for 265 years in this country.
Lincoln promised 40 acres and a mule... this is an unpaid debt
But instead of paying that particular debt, he signed the 1862 District of Columbia Emancipation Act, authorizing a payment to FORMER SLAVEOWNERS of $300 per head of lost.. "property" they "suffered."
Anyway... after blacks were free they endured a period of laws known as The Black Codes, which essentially criminalized any and all behavior. Just so happen to stop in front of a storefront to tie your shoe? Loitering! Go to prison. Walking home from work and the sun is setting? Vagrancy! Go to prison. These laws only applied to black people, and I think you get the point because neither you nor I have time to go through every offense. The point was not to create a giant prison population. It was to fill "inventory" for convict leasing programs. It went something like this:
"Are you a poor old plantation owner who doesn't want to pay market rates for labor? Did you suffer when the slaves were freed? No worries, you can lease human beings and pay the state a pittance. They work just as hard as slaves, because they were slaves!"
Now... eventually these laws were struck down. But, America wasn't done yet. Then came decades of Jim Crow. After that, segregation which forced blacks into low value housing and since education is funded by property taxes, lower home values = lower tax revenue, ergo underfunded schools and lower educational attainment. Even black GIs returning from war were not allowed to take advantage of VA loans and other benefits that white soldiers received, even though they fought side by side.
Indeed, the last federal law to come off the books that was specifically racist was during the 1960s. This means that I am part of the first generation of blacks to be born in this country with no laws specifically engineered against me. I'm 33.
Now, during this period, the US did pay reparations to Native Americans (Indian Claims Commission Act of 1946). The US acted even more swiftly in paying reparations to Japanese Americans (Japanese American Evacuation Claims Act of 1948)... Then again in 1988 when Congress voted to extend a SECOND apology and pay $20,000 to each Japanese-American survivor of the internment. More than $1.6 billion was paid to 82,219 eligible claimants. And this doesn't even begin touch the reparations that America paid to certain Holocaust survivors (or their survivors), even though the US isn't even responsible for the atrocities committed!
But here black Americans are... just waiting. No 40 acres. No mule.
Now... we DID try to "pull ourselves up by our bootstraps." By 1921 in Tulsa, OK, Black Americans built a thriving community. They were so successful that the community was noted for a number of black owners of private airplanes, even though the age of personal aviation had just begun. Anyway, jealous white people who lived outside that community (segregation bites white people in the ass for once) decided to burn it down. It is the first and only recorded event of bombs falling on the US when white plane owners dropped flaming barrels of oil over the homes, churches, and hospitals, of their black neighbors.
We tried in Rosewood... there's a whole movie about that one!
We tried again in Seneca Village.
We tried again in Black Bottom.
These are just off the top of my head. These were all centers of black excellence, home ownership, etc. But whether jealous white people burned it down or the government used the excuse of "slum clearance" to confiscate the land, it somehow got destroyed.
And now on a personal note. My uncle was lynched. My father, when he was 11 or 12, climbed the tree to cut his older brother, his hero's lifeless body, out of a tree. If my father and uncle were alive today, they'd be in their late 70s and 80s, respectively. The trauma that he experienced all those decades ago was very much a part of his entire life, even in how he parented his children. That trauma bled down to me. I'm not going to go into depth about how terrible my childhood was, but I think you can imagine. My point in mentioning this is America's legacy of racial terrorism is still very much contemporary in terms of cause and effect.
I took you through this little journey through history because there is more than "zero reason" to consider this topic. I hope next time you speak on the subject, you speak more intelligently, and with more compassion.

To be fair, the "slippery slope" analogy wasn't meant to compare various atrocities, it was meant to imply that: if you pay this group why shouldn't you pay all these other historically oppressed groups? • @brannonwinn2416
    @brannonwinn2416 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

so my family was the second largest slave owners in Dallas Texas before the civil war, a fact that is absolutely shameful in my opinion. the idea that people don't understand the legacy of slavery that allowed my family to benefit even after slavery ended blows my mind. that free labor allowed them to own and work vast swaths of land, even afterwards we had the generational wealth and connection to the wealthy former slave owners that allowed my family to start businesses, and eventually you have my grandfather dad and uncles who literally lived in a large home with live in help (whom were all black and Hispanic) provided by a local university all of whom were able to go to great universities and become well paid lawyers. that's not a path that was available to the people my family owned, if Dave doesn't get that and see how that leads to an unfair and morally wrong imbalance then I'm sorry but Michael is right every time he insults Rubin's intelligence. if that hurts Rubin's feelings, then tough shit.
with all that said my grandfather died just before Obama was elected and was a big supporter along with the rest of my family, the older members considered it one of the moments they were most proud of how far we've come. we recognize our ugly past, we try and do what we can to be mindful of it, and I genuinely don't think a single member is opposed to the idea of reperations. it's not a punishment, it's economic restitution for what people like my family did.
