ALBANIA! You are BEAUTIFUL! Albania has been on my bucket list for a good few years, and I am so excited to finally be here. On this trek, I headed out to a remote valley in Southern Albania and experienced a few unexpected adventures...
Big thank you to my friend Eni from Experience Gjirokastra ( / experiencegjirokastra ) for helping me arrange the logistics of this trek.

In 2000 I started meeting a lot of Albanians who had come to England. I loved their warmth and hospitality. I quickly learned their language and in 2003 I went to Tirana for a short holiday. I loved it so much I didn't want to go home. In 2004 I sold my house, left England, and came to live in Tirana. I love it so much! I could never go back to living in England again. I haven't travelled to the place in your video so I really enjoyed watching it.

As an Albanian born and living outside Albania, Liria reminds me of my grandmother. She lives far away from me and I visit her every few years. But everything is the same; she put on my feet hand vowen socks all of the sudden, she tucks me in bed, gives food more than I can eat, she is the best women in the world....both ancestors of Illiryans (I love her name, Liria!) and with cross in living room. It must be in mentality, the way they see life and their strong faith, beautiful.

Actually it is called " Albanian disease" by so many travellers centuries ago who travelled through Albania and loved Albania for all their life. Once you experience Albanian way of life , you're not able to "shed" it anymore. It is like " living in the past" with it's old lifestyle and honourable traditions that people never let them go and still follow. It is the innocence and purity of real humanity that pulls you in.

In Albania we have an honor system called Besa, going back hundreds of years when the region was divided into tribes. One of the rules is that you always have a bed made in your house to welcome any guest or traveler that needs it. It is the reason why Albania is the only country in Europe to have had more Jews at the end of WW2 as opposed to when it started
