- I went on my first solo backpacking trip to get a taste for what it's like, and I wanted to share the experience! It was a short and sweet trip - perfect for testing out all of my brand new gear, and getting a feel for what I'll be able to do in the future.
The trail I ended up doing in Virginia is called Mount Rogers and Appalachian Trail Loop.

That's quite the loadout for a first timer, clearly you did a lot of research. I think most everyone carries too much on their first trip, but if you were sitting around 30 lbs total that's pretty good for a first time, you just now know what it's like to bring a week's worth of food. Stick with your current base gear for a while until you figure out what you like and don't like. Everyone's preferences are different. I never could get comfortable on even the plushest of sleeping pads, so I use a hammock, for example. If your goal is to slow down and smell the roses so to speak, you might want to add a camp chair and more amenities for around camp. Lots of the backpacking youtube space is centered around thru hiking so it doesn't always give an accurate representation about what's best for weekend long trips where the goal is something other than miles.
Super true, and I’ve already picked up a nice lil camping chair that im probably adding to my list permanently, so im super excited about that! Im looking forward to seeing how it changes my trips here on out
Yeah, he's no innocent babe just deciding one day to wander into the woods. That's some well-researched, hella expensive gear.
Hammock and canopy are 100% the way to go if you’re backpacking. And I replace the tent weight with my camping chair. Little three legged fold out yanno.
Bro definitely decked the f out for the first time though lol. Hey for first timers they need that extra boost of confidence from the extra gear. I get it
@@brib9716 I'm putting together my first backpacking kit as someone who has MAYBE gone camping once every 2-3 years.. I've been doing research on TH-camrs and subreddits since October about 3 ½ months ago. I like to fish every year, but haven't kept or processed my own and would like to start this year. I like being outdoors but admittedly don't go out enough, this obsession with hiking and backpacking came from my latent interests in fishing, camping, and identifying mushrooms. 😂
It's now mid January - My plan is get comfortable processing fish in the spring, start going camping again late spring/early summer, and then try a solo backpacking trip near the end of summer.
I started with: Sleeping Bag, 32oz nalgene bottle, tent, tarp, an old folding knife, a hand saw, and a big SS Camping pot. When I go camping, it's usually with friends and I'm the asshole that brings lots of food but has nothing else to offer, and I hate it.
I've since picked up: Tarp/Poncho, Full Tang Hunting knife, SS Cup & Mess kit, a slingshot incase I come across a rabbit or squirrel and want to try my luck - or just for passing time - a sawyer squeeze, chlorine tabs as a backup, an emergency radio, 100' of 750lb paracord, emergency reflective blanket, 80% wool blanket, backup fishing kit (hooks, weights, a couple lures, and a spool with 50' 10lb braid and 50' 6lb mono), picked up a dinky Coleman lantern, sharpal diamond sharpener, made a collapsible stove for cooking and small fires, picked up a molle bag with some molle attachments, a legit medkit (I used to rely on a dinky first aid kit I kept in my car) and some hemostatic gauze cause I suffer from vasovagal syncope which is the fancy way of saying I passout at my own blood.
Was also given a good headlamp, lensatic compass w/ map of our province, and a hand auger as a Christmas gift.
I'm certain there's more that I'm forgetting. And there's a few things on the list: New tent, matching footprint, walking sticks, and tourniquets still haven't been picked up 😅 maybe a Grant hatchet?
I know I won't need all of it for backpacking, but I will need it all eventually. The way I see it, I can buy a low quality version of whatever I want, and then find a better version I need later on - or I can do my research upfront and only buy the one thing that Id end up with anyways.
Which is why I picked up an Ikejime kit, even though I've never processed my own fish. I know it's the best method, so I may as well shell out some money and learn to do it from the get-go. 😅
All of this is just to say: because someone is well researched and has spent a pretty penny doesn't mean theyre lying about their experience, if anything it says more about how little research you do in your own endeavors. 🤣
I’m an avid backpacker and have watched basically every backpacking video ever made and I found this to be one of the most enjoyable I have seen. Quite simple overall but very well edited and the commentary was great. I found myself smiling throughout the entire video. Excellent work !!
Thanks! I like the more laid back style, so im glad to hear that!
"Peaceful friday on the 13th of October" 🤣🤣
I planned specifically for that day for the sole reason to make that joke haha
Nice i didnt even catch that
Awesome 😮😮
Dude, this is your first video? That’s unbelievable! Can’t wait for more! Keep up the great work!
👀
he said he had another channel
One thing i recommend doing is keeping your headlamp somewhere easy to reach, and not tucked away in a dry back in your backpack. When it gets dark sometimes you have to reach for it in almost complete darkness so then its good to know exactly where it is
Ohh so true, good call!
As someone who’s planning to go on their first solo backpacking trip, this videos perfect.
Hope its a good one!
This was a awesomely filmed and narrated video! Your ability to concisely tell the story while interjecting it with jokes is great. I'm looking forward to the next journey :)
Much appreciated!
Well done. I remember my first backpacking trip in Shenandoah National Park back in 2007. Something that I had desired to do since I was a kid. Then at 43 years old I did it and it was a successful 2 night trip and I absolutely loved it. I’ve done so many more trips since that year and every time I still get apprehensive the night before I head out. Not because of the negative possibilities during a trip so much but because I mostly go solo and that I’ll be out of my environment. Once I hike for about a mile from the trailhead, all that apprehension fully disappears and a beautiful calmness enters my soul…a particular calmness you experience only when solo backpacking. Thanks for the video.
One of the most amazing and down to earth backpacking videos I have ever seen, good luck on the many awaiting adventures!
I just came across this in my recommended, really good video. Nice storytelling mate. Enjoyable to watch✌🏼
This is such a peaceful video 😌 you’ve inspired me to want to go hiking
This was awesome! As someone looking to go on their first solo backpacking trip soon, this was very insightful!
Enjoyed this my guy! Thanks for sharing. Also a great and reasonable loadout majority of people can enjoy hiking with imo
I'm incredibly surprised that this was your first video, from the audio quality to the writing everything was exquisite! I can't wait to see what you do next!
Thoroughly enjoyed the video. The music, narration, comedic relief, all of it. Looking forward to what you publish next. You've got the gift, definitely the next big thing to hit TH-cam and backpacking!
I am going to have to give that comment a hard "YES"
Cheers to your hike. Kudos to your humor and pleasant commentary. Bravo to your confidence and determination. This is helpful. I plan on doing a 100 mile AT section hike beginning south in Feb or March. Wishing you peace and good fortune. Happy Trails!
Thanks! Best of luck to you too, that sounds like it will be a great time!
watching while being wrapped in blanket feeling cozy and satisfying
awesome video man! cant wait the magathon all the videos you have. great quality, relaxing and a pleasure to watch
What a pleasantly candid video. I genuinely enjoyed this 8 minutes and 13 seconds. Thank you! 😊
This is arguably one of the best backpacking videos I've watched. Looking forward to more videos when you get the time!
Nice video. It brought back some feelings and emotions I had when I first started solo backpacking. I've been solo backpacking since I was 18 (I'm 67 now). No matter how long you do it there is always something to learn. Occasionally I still make stupid mistakes despite having over 50 years experience. Although I backpack with friends I savor my solo experiences. Despite going to some pretty remote places I always run into people. The only time I had multiple days of solitude was in the Uinta mountains in Utah were I didn't see anyone for 4 days. It was awesome. Keep at it!
Thanks, thats great to hear! Im looking forward to exploring new places, and im hoping by the time I reach 67, I’ll be fortunate enough to still be out there doing the same exact same thing. Best wishes to you as well!
I wanna start backpacking this summer, what size of backpack would you recommend for 2-3 day backpacking trip. During a day theres around 25°C so I assume I dont need lots of warm clothes.
In shock that this is your first video, great work. Can’t wait to see more. Highly recommend bringing a friend when backpacking
Good luck on your adventures! Backpacking and day hiking has become my new favorite sport/ hobby! I love watching videos like these and you did a great job with yours! Enjoy the hiking!
Likewise!
This was a great video to watch as I am just starting to get into the research phase of this. I can't wait to follow along with your journeyand see where it takes you! You should definitely try and make a trip out to Utah!
So cozy so sweet. Love it!
Great job with the video. I enjoyed the storytelling. Congrats on your first backpacking trip.
hiked this exact gorgeous part of the appalachian trail a while, video brought back amazing memories, thank you.
Just did my first backpacking trip a few weeks ago with my roommates and I think I may do a solo over spring break! This has persuaded me to commit to it! great video.
You did decent for your first time, and you made a good video to go along with it. I like its short time span and pace you kept it at. Keep it up.
As someone who loves calm and collected style of videos, this was beautiful. Deserving of a sub, keep up the great work mate
Great trip and great video! I can't wait to see more.
I loved the video! Please make more, I can't wait to see what else you have planned
Love the video mate, awesome work. Looking forward to more!
ive been looking into doing the same thing, and this video was an incredible humble experience to give me the confidence and push i needed to buy the stuff and go. Thanks. And I am super excited to see more of your content and watch it grow!
Thanks, thats amazing! I hope you have some great trips!
Dude, this is really cool, thanks for sharing it with the people...
Wonderful video, thoroughly enjoyable. Thumbs up to the down to earth, basic approach. No labels, brands, tech this and that. 👍👏
This was such a peaceful video and I'm glad TH-cam sent me here. Thank you!
Honestly, this was such a calm video that even I feel more relaxed now :)
I went through a very similar experience this summer in PA. I got equipment and... just started backpacking. Great video and I'm glad the YT gods sent me your well produced vid. I look forward to seeing how your experiences compare to mine moving forward! Nice work!
Glad im not alone haha - thats good to hear, and thanks a bunch!
Looking forward to many more of your adventures! Keep posting pls... its a main quest❤
that was great! love to get the perspective of a newbie for a change
This has inspired me to try this. Thank you!
That was a great video. I enjoyed the narration, the humor, and the takeaways. I often hike too fast and miss so much. I'm gonna slow down now.
This video makes me feel so happy and peaceful. Make more please!
I cannot believe this is your first video! Its brilliant and im so excited for more!
Need more of these backpacking videos! This is as like watching an episode of how to w/ John Wilson. Narration on point. (Side note, this trail is a great one to do.)
such a good video man! looked like a great hike. been trying to get back into overnight hiking again myself and someone recommended that same area around greyson highlands. love a wild horse. looking forward to your next videos!
Thanks, you should definitely check it out then! Wild horses a plenty
I was shocked to see you only have 615 subs! Well, 615 after I subbed. It feels like you're a bigger TH-camr, you know how to sequence a video very well
Really fun to watch!!!
I love it , great vid, I notice the humor, lean into that amazing 👏
Here i am on my way to my first solo camping trip and i see you’re also in Va like me. What a great sign. Cheers!
Hey man, really enjoyed the video! Nice work. Cool to have come across someone just getting started in filmmaking and hiking same as myself. Looking forward to seeing how the channel grown!
Thanks a bunch, and Im loving your videos too! Beautiful stuff so far, and im happy to have another channel to follow. Best wishes!
Awesome job keeping the video engaging! Smoky mountains next! Definitely one of our favorite places to hike & backpack beautiful scenery we love filming there!
Thanks! Hopefully I’ll be able to make my way over to the smokies soon, that would be great, and it seems like you have some great videos to help me plan where to go there!
@@MinnowTank oh yeah we love the Smokies! Lots of cool hidden gems in the Smokies as well. Stay safe out there!
Love your Backpacking in snow video! Wow! You be brave!
yo this video was amazing keep it up cant wait until the next. I'm planning on doing on of these very soon. just gotta get a backpack. so beautiful
Nice video man! I’m going to rewatch it when I get home to check out those views again.
Love the video. I would love to hike around there. I’m from Valencia/ Spain so here we have more of beach and tall mountains. Cool content man!❤
Well done man. I've made my new years resolution to start my own backpacking journey this summer. cant wait to get out!
Sounds like it’s going to be a solid year!
Hell yeah bro been wanting to get into this just need to get my gear! And thought about starting a channel just for you lol. Got yourself a new sub Im here for the journey 😎
I really loved this video! Please do more!! So well edited🤩
Love this video! New follower here. Can’t wait to see more! Pretty awesome load out for your first time!
Can’t wait for your next hike!
Hiii. This is exciting and encouraging to see. I'm on the verge of doing my first solo overnight camping trip - currently getting all the gear I need and - like you - I'm doing a lot of research. Cant buy it all in one go, but Ive been accumulating stuff for about 9 months now and I'm almost ready to go with the most basic set-up. It was super refreshing to see a beginner venture out and share their very first adventure. Also, loved the humor. Excited to follow for more!
Thats amazing! I hope you are able to get some good trips in!
Great start🎉🎉
The subtle humour went nicely with style. Well made video!
Good Job Dude! I like the simple clean style. Seems you learned something doing your gaming Channel. You definitely progressed faster than I have. LOL!
The subway was the best meal I’ve ever seen anyone take backpacking, i loved the video!
Lovely video! Keep them coming!
Nice humble vid! My buddy and i are planning to explore a lot this summer. Im talking almost the whole mountain range. 3-7 day hikes. We are super excited and cant wait till the snow starts melting so we can begin. I personally am also wanting to study the plants along the way as well. Im glad he siad he wants to do it as well because i was planning to explore the whole mt range by myself if i had to. It'll be nice sharing it with one other.
That sounds like it will be great, I hope its a good time! Studying the plants along the way will be super neat too, I like that idea
@MinnowTankVideos yes, I'm very excited. Beings how these mountains I talk about are basically in my backyard, learning the plants are well worth it for medicinal, and herbal reasons. Once you start looking into them, you realize how useful every plant can be. Bushcraft is also very fun!
Fantastic video! You really did awesome, and from one hiker to another don’t worry too much about the weight. Your pack weight will go down with experience. You learn what you will need and what you won’t. It looked like a great hike
Thanks a bunch! Im already feeling much better about what to pack and what not, so Im super excited to continue both shedding things and adding others with more hikes
South West VA is just so pretty its amazing how easy it is to just find some woods to get lost in
Glad you enjoyed it. I’d love to relive my first solo camping trip. The best ones, as you suggest, are the ones that don’t have a fixed end point/time.
that was a cool video mate, you wanted to check out this new thing and just did it, thats the spirit!
Really nice video! Was very enjoyable and great voiceover! Good luck with your channel
Awesome video!! Looks like you are well on your way!
Nicely done! all the best
love it. seriously great first go
Thanks, it was a great time!
at the end when you said, "what do i want to do next time" made me smile, because we know there's gonna be a next time, and you my friend have a new hobby
Great video and congrats on the solo hike. Living in Ontario Canada but likely moving to Northern Virginia in 2024. Looking forward to the new trails.
That’s going to be sweet! They have so many beautiful trails and parks around there.
Can't wait for your next video!
Thanks for the video, bud. It’s nice to watch one from someone just starting out. I started watching hiking videos from Dixie, from Homemade Wanderlust. But since her, too many followed her but taking things way too seriously. This was refreshing. And if you haven’t yet, check out homemade wanderlust. Her first videos from the Appalachian trail were initially just for her family. They are great and her evolution has been wonderful. Looking forward to see yours.
SUBBING. Everything this guy did or said, I feel like I can definitely relate if I ever did go on a solobackpacking too.
Great video. Love your gear setup. Im fairly new to all this and will be doing my first solo camp either this or next weekend. Started up my Channel couple weeks ago to also share my experiences in the outdoors. Keep up the good work. Cheers.
Thats sweet, happy trails!
wholesome, thanks for this video :)
Incredible first video on the channel!
Very cool! I find this video inspiring as I too wanna try solo camping someday, keep the awesome content! :D
Thanks, you should give it a go sometime!
Love your humor!
Dude I just got all my gear a few weeks ago just waiting on some warm weather! Being from upstate new york im a little nervous to start off winter camping so ive been binging videos like yours to get my fill lol. good luck on your adventures man!
Lol I know exactly what you mean. Thats sweet though, I hope you have some good trips with all the new stuff!
Great trip for you. Best wishes from cold dark wet Lancashire, England!
I’ve done this trail twice, it’s one of my favorites!
You motivate me to go hiking!
Bout to go solo during spring break . Good video
I went on my first backpacking trip (also solo) a few weeks ago! Had to do crazy tons of research on gear (cost a lot but plan on using them a lot going forward), where I was camping, and watched countless videos. My total pack came out around 33 lb, had to pack all my water since any water source in the area couldn’t be relied on to be flowing. Thankfully, it didn’t feel all that heavy! Even while hiking off trail to the top of a mountain. I also waited too late to setup camp and found myself finishing up after sunset which was a bit scary. Saw amazing views, plants, bison, deer, longhorns, birds, and learned a lot for future trips as well.
That sounds amazing!! Definitely seems like we have similar experiences of getting gear and everything. I fell deep down the backpacking rabbit hole haha but I think it was well worth it. Thats super cool though, its great having other people starting out around the same time! Wishing you the best with your future trips!
I congradulate the TH-cam algorithm for sending me this video even tho you have nothing else on this channel cool stuff!
nice video!! can’t wait to see more
What a great video..Thank you.
Nice video dude! Hope to see more backpacking videos.
Thanks! Hopefully i’ll get to go back out soon and film a different hike
Looking forward to more hiking videos!
That was an awesome video!
Your voiceover makes this video almost seem like a bedtime story
