Honestly, I felt it was all just a nightmare instead of a haunting. The way it says at the end that it feels like he finally woke up really hints on that. That he was dreaming and imagining the shit that was happening due to his conscious. That's just my take on it though. The game is pretty open to interpretation for either way.
I’m just gonna throw this out there since no one has directly stated it in the comments, spoilers The ending appears to be Kyle waking up from a drug overdose in which he is being tormented by the ghost of Sam. The pounding on the door represents his heart beat and the “golf pencils” that where on the ground were all the needles from his crippling addiction he took on after killing Sam. It’s honestly a great twist ending
i'm surprised that character didn't drink a single can of monster energy and didn't punch a single hole in the drywall. 0/10, not an accurate representation of Kyle

He's not doing it to bring her family closure or because he thinks it's right (he still ultimately blames Sam for everything), he's doing it because he's tired of the stress it brings him to keep lying. This is hands-down the most underrated horror game of all time. I have no idea how on earth I've never heard of it, and despite bingeing John Wolfe's vids for months, it's only just now that TH-cam finally thought it would recommend this video. This was legitimately one of the scariest games I've ever seen, even with John's commentary, and despite its total reliance on written notes (which are normally my least favorite part of any horror game), it is so compelling and well-written that I stayed along for the ride, and I'm glad I did. Horror games have been extremely same-y, unoriginal, and needlessly derivative for years now, and to see one attempt even a single genuinely creative/unique scare is actually really rare from what I've seen. This game had so many that I lost count. It's also very unpredictable, which is a crucial aspect of horror that is frequently overlooked. This developer feels like an excellent movie director- they know exactly what they want and how to achieve it, and they're not afraid to take risks and trust the player to figure out the game's plot and its twists without blatantly holding the player's hand. I can't wait to see what this developer comes out with next, because as far as I'm concerned, 'Love, Sam' is a masterpiece.
Lol John: "Transferred to another school my senior year. Yeaaaah. It was tough.. .... Actually, it wasn't that tough. I made friends really easily, and I had a good time."
Holy shit. This was actually pretty good. I always have low expectations for horror games, but this was pretty good. Got me a few times and I also agree that when we thought Brian was the protag it felt creepier. I like how the game was vague and mysterious, but not too vague where you dont get what the fuck was happening.
Ooh, I think John missed the pencil changing to a needle for a second at 25:42 since he didn't react to it. This was a well written game and I couldn't imagine anyone better to guide us through it than the one and only John Wolfe.

I really enjoyed this. Different, done well, perfect run time. The things on the ground were syringes. They were sitting on the desk for a while and then Kyle mentions having to take drugs to get over what he did at the end there. Thanks for another awesome let's play!
So... Minor spoilers, and a bit of a personal story/reflection here. ... Being a gay-leaning/raised-in-the-South guy down in the comments, I feel like I could empathize, at least partially, where Kyle was coming from during his whole jealousy-fuelled "revenge" scheme, not saying he was _right_ in what he did, but at least I can sympathize with him on how he _felt_ regarding his feelings towards Brian, and what he ended up doing. Since I had to go through a period where I was figuring myself out, I, in the process of doing so, I ended up latching onto one of my best friends, even to the point where I believed I was "in love" with him, or something equally sappy. But, unlike Kyle, while it was fairly painful to not confess those feelings and, in turn, not possibly have then reciprocated, and even moreso when my friend had his first girlfriend, I ended up working through my feelings enough to realize my own jealousy and self-hatred, enough that I ended up seeing that while the "love" I felt was _like_ such, it was more of a projection of what I was going through, and never needed to confess those feelings in the first place. I also, somewhat indirectly, came out to said friend not long thereafter, thankfully, he was very accepting of me, and, while we've become busier in recent years, we're still pretty good friends. Well, that was choppy, but that was my 2¢ on this game's story and what I got out of it, essentially.
not to take your comment and make it about me but as a gay dude in a really similar situation growing up I FELT this comment holy shit like, kyle's a shitty person for what he did, but I can't help but know where he's coming from. Not to justify what he did, of course, but as you said I can sympathize with how he felt.
@@AMERICANSQVIDIOT I just want to say thanks to you and OP for this perspective on the story, and Kyle's motivations. The game is so well written anyway, that I now wonder if there was a little bit of reality in Kyle on the part of the devs.

I just finished watching and now I'm going back to rewatch knowing everything. What a fantastic game. I had to put down what I was doing so I could just focus on the video. So much care was put into the storytelling. I kept jumping back and forth as to what the diary meant and who was writing it. I love games that unfold slowly and keep you guessing. I had no idea what was coming, and that's a rare and beautiful thing to me.
The storytelling and twist was executed amazingly. The scares weren’t necessarily my cup of tea but the way everything fit together, with the hearts as well (“finish what you started”) was really satisfying to look back on
I suggested this game to John in comments. John says that his friends recommend this game to him. John just called me his friend? Gonna write about it in my diary...
This game's central conflict kinda reminds me of how Steve Crain from The Haunting of Hill House TV series described ghosts as representations of unfinished business or emotional connections leftover for the living from when somebody dies, and not just as a superstitious representation of death. The MC in the game is definitely being haunted, but it's fascinating because there may or may not be an actual ghost involved, there's definitely his own guilt that perpetuates his own haunting...
I just noticed at 25:42 the pencil turning into a needle. I'm assuming Kyle has a heroine addiction and that's why, which adds a whole 'nother level of hatred of himself and need to feel something to things.
Huh, I've heard that first page before. It's referencing an old anecdote called "The Shortest Horror Story Ever Written" - last person left alive on Earth, but then.... a knock. Rather odd.
What a sad fucking story, how It tricks you into thinking Sam is crazy at the start, but slowly realize things aren't right, and a classic "you've been the bad guy all along" twist at the end.
I wasn't really watching this video, mainly just listening, but I suspected Sam was a boy, then realized she was a girl, then was probably thinking this Kyle guy liked Brian (B?) then it all started to make sense. I wouldn't say this was "scary", but it definitely kept you wary of what could/might happen during the game. Big props to the creator for not turning this into a screaming jump scare game. @@midblu5368 that's what i was wondering too! not sure!
there was also a part that said "brian used to have no interest in girls" or something, implying that he wasn't interested in dating but maybe he used to have interest in kyle then??
@gamewizard I i think Brian was freaked out when he found out about the horrible things Kyle did, not because he had feelings for him
@gamewizard I what does that even mean? I seriously don't understand what you said. I'm just saying if I was Brian and found out that my best friend Kyle has feelings for me and also created rumors and planned to ruined Sam's life I would be freaked out about the latter
@gamewizard I you pulled those "lines" out of..not the game for sure. There's no definitive proof Brian's completely straight (the only hint that he "doesn't like girls" according to MC points otherwise), nor that Kyle's is completely gay.
I saw this as more of a nightmare of guilt and selfishness that Kyle had been living with for 3 years, not so much a haunting.

In Korean superstition, writing anyone's name or just using red ink curses a person to death. I wonder if they are applying that myth here.
So, every signed document or contract means cursed? How do you manage anything; buying houses, getting married, getting a job, getting grades from school...? Oh well, I suppose everyone does eventually die so it's not really a curse, it's just fact :)

Honestly, I felt it was all just a nightmare instead of a haunting. The way it says at the end that it feels like he finally woke up really hints on that. That he was dreaming and imagining the shit that was happening due to his conscious. That's just my take on it though. The game is pretty open to interpretation for either way.
Yeah, I think it was all caused by his extreme guilt from killing Sam
@gamewizard I True!
Well yeah. If it was a ghost Kyle would have died.
He was allucinating, because he did drugs to scape from the guilt, he says it at the end and you also can see the needles
I’m just gonna throw this out there since no one has directly stated it in the comments, spoilers
The ending appears to be Kyle waking up from a drug overdose in which he is being tormented by the ghost of Sam. The pounding on the door represents his heart beat and the “golf pencils” that where on the ground were all the needles from his crippling addiction he took on after killing Sam.
It’s honestly a great twist ending
i'm surprised that character didn't drink a single can of monster energy
and didn't punch a single hole in the drywall.

I know for a fact that journaling would have been good for me as a preteen/teen, and I had PLENTY of them given as gifts and whatnot, but I was terrible about keeping up with them. @@ThaVipaa oh I don't disagree with that, if it truly was an accident then the guilt and stress of hiding it would be unimaginable.
But it's his statement of how HE'S the victim and never once saying he's sorry about what he did to Sam both mentally and ultimately physically that makes his act very selfish motivation wise. He's not doing it to bring her family closure or because he thinks it's right (he still ultimately blames Sam for everything), he's doing it because he's tired of the stress it brings him to keep lying. It's good he's taking responsibility and facing consequences but in my mind that doesn't make him any less of an asshole and monster.

I really liked this comment. Wholesome!
not to take your comment and make it about me but as a gay dude in a really similar situation growing up I FELT this comment holy shit
like, kyle's a shitty person for what he did, but I can't help but know where he's coming from. Not to justify what he did, of course, but as you said I can sympathize with how he felt.
