  • Following the harvesting part of "tulip hell", I had to then move all of the stems as soon as possible due to a finicky fridge. Here's how I did and hopefully it can help you too!

    Thank you, as always, for being the absolute GEM of information on YT. You share so much that would take us at LEAST a full year to learn. ✊🌻🌻🌻

    Once again your advice is so timely and greatly appreciated. Thanks for sharing your strategies. Living rurally makes home delivery harder, but I believe advertising a central location pick up point and time is a feasible option.

    We built a walk in with a 10000 btu ac and a coolbot and it holds at 3°C beautifully and I love it🎉 ...just in case anyone was wondering how they hold up Lol ❤️

    A couple notes on using a chest freezer-turned-cooler based on my experience: the sides still get too cold for flowers. I would sometimes wrap my stems in paper but I’m going to maybe try lining the inside with styrofoam or something so I can pack it more full. I don’t know how much humidity tulip bulbs can handle, but I tried storing my dahlia tubers in mine this past winter and the began to get moldy. I caught it in time and was able to clear up the mold with bleach (and I moved them) and saved them all. I had mine wrapped in Saran Wrap which worked great just in my basement last year, but they sprouted a bit earlier than I would have liked. I thought I could just keep them cooler and be fine, but did not take the humidity into account. So, be sure to keep an eye on it. They don’t vent in the same way as a fridge does (at least mine doesn’t).

      This is sooo super helpful. Because of this comment, we are going to put our Govee in there to check out humidity and do some test runs. Appreciate you giving this candid feedback. My bulb rep did make a good point that soil forcing in crates would be actually ideal in a chest freezer but alas, I am not soil forcing!

      @@bareflowerfarmGlad I could help. I’m sure that conditions can vary, but whatever you end up doing, maybe start small before putting a ton of whatever flower into the chest cooler. I might try dahlia tubers in mine again this year but pack them in peat or vermiculite instead of wrapping in plastic. But I’ll just try a few extras that I don’t care about this time instead of putting all of my tubers in! 🤦🏻‍♀️

    I have a new beverage cooler. I can set the "low" temp, but it runs a fluctuating cycle of 7 degrees up from there, and back down to the set temp...do you think that will be ok to cool bulbs with this fall? And to store tulips dry?

    • @bareflowerfarm
      @bareflowerfarm  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think so, one thing I’m not familiar with a beverage cooler is how it regulates humidity and whether there is a fan. It’s less temp fluctuations but more humidity and airflow the fridge needs to control for!

    The thing about a CSA is you take the hit on the low yield years and I would hope most people who join a CSA knows that. I've been an organic veggie CSA customer for 20 years and I know Farmer Dale always makes sure we have lettuce or corn even if he has to buy it from a friend. My point is, I don't think asking for flexibility is out of line.
    Funny. that you can't sell yellow and red. I hate most yellow, red and orange flowers. They are just so generic. In Michigan, out wildflowers are mostly white, yellow and orange so I think i just see too much of those colors.

      Very true on the CSA- the only challenge is that all of my CSA customers have never heard of a CSA before! So educating them on this concept is the first piece but luckily they are all so understanding that it hasn't been an issue!
      In general, I am not a fan of yellow and red flowers. But the orange in tulips can have such a range and the saturation changes over time! I don't like flaming bright orange for sure. In any case, too much of those colors isn't necessarily great but sometimes you just need a little for that pop ;-)

    Not understanding what you mean by a "moms" group? Have you ever thought about writing a book?

    • @bareflowerfarm
      @bareflowerfarm  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the delayed response, but on Facebook, there are "groups" that you can join. Literally any group under the sun exists. There are alot of groups for "moms". Usually they are called "Mom2Mom group for [insert town name]"
      And lol no to book, at least not in the near future. I have alot to learn and experience first!
