As someone that builds FIA spec cages. We always take the roof skin of so you can weld the top of the bars. You can also use foot plate boxes, which can also be used as strategic strengthening plates if you think a head. Don't reuse bars that you have stuffed up, unless you can clear cut past the ends short of the old welds..... FIA Schedule J ....Every joint must be fully welded all the way round. You can step the cage out from the body enough to get a welder in and attach the cage to the body with gussets which are the same thickness or thicker than the tube wall..... What you have there will not pass FIA spec....I can send you a copy of the FIA roll cage spec if you can't find it....

That's what I was going to say. It's nice to have a tight fitting cage that follows the contours of the body, but you have to build some tolerance in to allow for it to be fully welded, especially at the base plates. Any incomplete weld will fail a logbook inspection.

Incomplete welds is a fail in every series I've ever been involved in. So don't turn up to events with NASA, Lemons, Champ Car, or AER and expect to run. I think the only exception I'm aware of is for GT3 cup Porsches that for some reason don't need fully completed welds.

@ stevebrownracing.... It's because of the carbon composite structure. I'm lucky enough not to have the kind of budget to be involved with them.. Also.. McLarens fall into that category for the same reason...
I'd also like to say that I think FDF Raceshop have a great channel, backed up with fantastic products.

Where would those specs be available?
It doesn't really matter to me, being in Australia, but the nerd in me wants to see if we have any differences.
      Other than imperial/metric

If you guys are in Texas or surrounding, check out turn 5 fabrication for a cage!
    Great video

1:34, From FIA Appendix J "Guidance on welding. These must be carried out along the whole perimeter of the tube." How did you fail this when doing the main hoop brace? This should be blindingly obvious you need to weld the bars fully. Your order of work prevents this.

Gotta tell them you HAVE to weld everything complete. You'll fail tech, and even if you snuck it past an inspector (which you should never do), you're driving a potential pin cushion.

why not cut the roof off, weld the cage and weld the roof back on?🤔

5:46 for some vehicles the roof is not easy to remove and it would take additional fabrication to make it look right.

Surprisingly in a lot of instances it really doesn't make it that much easier. Just finishing up a cage in my mx5 and even with no roof and being able to basically build the cage in sections outside of the car, it's all the welding that needs to be done inside the car down low that's the hardest
