Last week we got rid of our potato stock seats and threw some new Sparco seats at the e36. Today we get to go full race car by fabricating our own roll cage in case we ever yeet ourselves! Will it be worth it to tackle this ourselves? Only one way to find out. Thankfully Mike is here to help out!

Not the craziest thing, I got one that I wheelie around my house when I’m bored and around my shop, once you get it down you can wheelie up curbs, 360’s.
I learned how to do that in a day at band camp. On of the kids had a broken leg and let us mess around with his wheelchair, surprisingly easy to do. lol sorry to crap on your comment.
We used to setup obstacle courses and wheelie around them on my friend’s grandma’s wheelchair. I know a paraplegic who does stair drops in his wheelchair.

I think we’d all benefit on a money pit episode on swapping alternators. Is a higher amp worth it, what to look for, and wiring. Plus it’s finally a German car so if definitely benefit off this.
Alternators are easy. Seldom do you need more than factory output unless you are doing something strange that needs high wattage like a big stereo or running winches and low rider hydraulic pumps. Otherwise charging problems are always corrosion issues.

Having the proper tools makes a HUGE difference in how fast, easy, and fun it can be to make your own parts. I have been looking for a really good deal on an inexpensive tubing bender so that I can make my own 10 point cage.
Something tells me I won't be doing a DIY rollcage in my car, oh that's right, it's my wallet
lolll
Yup. This cage would be what, 2-3k to have someone do? And I wouldn’t attempt it myself, even with a bender.
Jegs makes a bolt in cage almost exactly like the one they made shipped by freight to your door for around $650. Made for the E36 chassis years 92-99
@@chasejones3456 That is doable, a Do It Yourself roll cage, you need the tools, which I don't have, which are very expensive.
It's not a money pit if you don't toss in any money.
We need more glam shots of the cage with the interior assembled around it!
Without a doubt the best episode of Money Pit so far. Amazing job.

Please organize the episodes into the playlist Donut ❤️ love the series though!

I was wondering why he cut a "V" in the tube instead of cutting the outsides to make a "V", then I remembered I'm an idiot and never built a rollcage before.
@Van Jon shut up
It looks absolutely amazing. It would have been nice to hear something about the safety calculations that go into making something like this. How much weight is this expected to withstand? In the event of a rollover, how much pressure would this be? Will the welds hold? Does the thickness of the metal tube make a difference?
For the most part the calculations have already been done. There are generally regulatory requirements on tube diameter, wall thickness, number and placement of different tubes, etc. depending on what race you will be taking part in. 2nd, rollcage strength is about impact not weight. You don't just want it to hold against the weight of the car, you want it hold against the weight of the car at 100mph as it hits a barrier. As for the welds, do NOT do this DIY unless you know how to properly make structural welds. Yes the thickness of the tube is extremely important to the strength of the cage. Hope this helps answer your questions.
Good one! I like the way you kept it moving. Some of the Donut stuff has more personality and opinion than actual car building.. but not your stuff Zach. Awesome work.
Two of the coolest guys out there. Made one helluva nice cage. Nice cage. Nic cage. Nicolas Cage. Wait where am I?

Donut needs to hire Mike Day asap, dudes a wizard with that welder
I can't wait for the next season of HiLow
Top notch looking cage. Good move putting plates under the cage on the floor for strength. If you wanted to go all out, at the X brace area behind the seats you could weld a ~6" square plate over that entire area on both sides to tie all those welds together. It's probably not necessary but it would add a lot of additional strength and give a clean look.

Easiest way to clean the plasma cuts up is to get a nice heavy, clean edge piece of steel and just slam it into the buildup from the surface area of the steel outward. The whole thing will pop right off and save you a ton of grind time and use of abrasives. Let it cool for a minute first so it naturally separates a bit.
