I stumbled across you guys via your InRangeTV collaboration.
I really like the content, lengthy, and depth. Much more enjoyable than the short clickbait stuff that's a dime a dozen. :thumbs up:

Too bad Jim Fuller couldn't get in on this. He sounds like a pretty knowledgable historian and would love to see what he has to say. Maybe a series on optimizing / running the AK with buck, JF, chuck and allen?

I love these Modcasts, please keep them coming!
Also, if you're taking a vote I much prefer the complete videos instead of being broken up into clips. Makes it easier to keep up with flow of the conversation, you don't have to worry about TH-cam autoplaying the wrong video next, and makes it easier to just click and listen while driving.
Thanks for everything y'all do and keep up the great work!

Hornady also makes a 5.45 load with a V-Max bullet

39:10 "wanna give a 5 min synopsis on where AKs came from?" yeah, so when a Russian and sheet metal get together and they really like eachother, or too much vodka is involved... and 9 months later the Kalashnikov was designed.

  • @robertpatter5509
    @robertpatter5509 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hornady many years ago had the TAP load line for the Socom 16. They started with a 110gr 308 VMAX load for that M1A. Then they made the 155/168gr TAP loads for barrier penetration. I don't know how that 110gr 308 TAP load did. But it's supposed to be better than the 75/77gr 5.56 , but lighter than the M80 load. It's essentially a varmint load. The 110gr TAP load that is.
Good enough for the urban environment as they see it.

Also I wish I could've hopped in there because there is a lot of tactics and doctrine with the original AK-47 That you guys missed like the rifle being an "Avtomat" evolving out of the mass issue of Soviet submachineguns in Ward war two.
Conceptually from the beginning the Kalashnikov system has been very different then A.R. 15 M-16 Family of weapons that actually did start out as rifles that were capable of being used at qualification ranges and at national match style shooting in the tradition of American classic rifle marksmanship style shooting

I look at 9x39 as the Russian verison of 300 blkout that was made about 15 years earlier, but I know nothing. can be used for similar purposes.

I think the greatest example of the fact that the AR family is the best service likely ever made, is it service record. It is by far the most used weapon by SMU, CT and SOF units worldwide. Even countries that are issued AKs as main service rifles, use M4s in their SOF units. Even today when we have multiple possible "better" replacements like the 416 and SCAR, we still see guys using the M4 and preferring them over newer designs. Stoner was an absolute genius

I know it's been over a year, but to Buck's bit about milled versus stamped, I have to wonder whether the thicker RPK-style stamped receiver types would be a middle-ground between the twisting stamped models he mentions and the sheer rigidity of the milled types, at less weight than the latter.
Really liking the free-form of this 'cast, though I do agree with the other commenter that it does take a while to get onto the stated topic and really hang out there. The PKM-at-distance inspiring the "overmatch" craze part was a neat side discussion.

    >commie weapons episode> proceed to have a bunch of US military guys talk about US military procurement and weapons and training for half an hour
I swear you should just change the name of this channel to the Generation X US Military AR extravaganza

the overmatch myth is directly related to the whole show.

    • @Ivan-vn1pd
      @Ivan-vn1pd 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Fair enough, IDK I was expecting along with alot of other guys to hear about stuff from people from nations that actually US AKs instead of the current US policy debates. I would love to have hear in the future from guys both in Russia or maybe Bulgarian/Polish military guys who use the commie stuff every day or from an AK builder.
But I guess you can't have everything

I apologize I saw the footage, that stuff is pretty retarded. If I was in that class I would leave and sue him for some kind of felony misuse of a firearm or negligence charge as well as civil damages against the training company or perhaps even draw on the guy as in a stand your ground state this could technically qualify as putting someones life in danger
      That is just.........wrong

I was referring more to his time spent with the AK platform seeing that he was from behind the Iron Curtain. As to his training methods, I can't comment because I haven't taken his classes but I will say for AK knowledge I defer to him

    Makarovs suck?
Actually as carry guns and as like a Russian product improved Walther PP( which is what the guns are) they are great I carry one probably three days a week
The thing is they just try to push those guns into the role of a service pistol like a Glock or 1911 and that is where it falls on its face

AKM manufacturing isn't complicated. It's crude, simple, and easy as hell*.
With the *caveat* that there's a massive capital investment for the stamping equipment for a serious production run.
The rest of the fixturing, barrel, pressing, welding, and manufacturing is either the same difficulty or easier than your :insert any semi-auto rifle:.
I would put money that with the money for the (relatively) simple stamping equipment and proper fixturing (it's FAR, FAR simpler than most NAZI/Wermacht stamped guns; and simpler than most other stamped receivers over the last 60 years).
that I could get ~minimum wage people to build functional rifles..... Minus barrel manufacturing, maybe trunion milling, QC, and an operation here or there that requires more skill.
I have yet to see a AKM blueprint, but I've seen the manufacturing blueprints for an AR-15 and I'd bet money the AK has fewer dimensions to hold, generally looser tolerances (minus maybe the bolt and barrel), fewer positional tolerances (aka "GD&T" for my fellow machinists).
So now your question is probably "well if it's so easy, why isn't it being done en masse?!?".
I'd say the biggest reason is AK's are still relatively in high supply, relatively cheap, with only a moderate demand. And also moderate easy access to parts kits.
The cost for the stamping dies, fixturing, properly developing/backwards engineering the technical data package (ie. heat treatment specs. functional tolerances of critical components, etc.) to make the firearms economically cheap to manufacture when at full tilt production is rather high.
That capital investment either requires initially higher rifle prices for an uncertain market or the expectation of consistent and long term sales (if you're a large manufacturer that can eat the initial costs for the long term cash inflow).
Plus the teething costs that are common on new ventures.
All that makes it a difficult venture for a U.S. company to start
