    The reason there is only one toll booth is because when you go through that one side you pay for your trip home so where I live I pay one US dollar and that means it’s $.50 cents to Pennsylvania $.50 cents back into New Jersey

      Not a bad toll at all- Bay Bridge toll in SF is $7. $1800/year to cross that bridge if you work in the city and live on the East side.

    Nice to see the Bay Bridge back in Marble Mountain, especially in such a beautiful location. I'd love to see a Golden Gate style lookout point added to that park, though as you said, the Bay Bridge isn't quite as iconic.
    To answer your question about one-way tolling vs two-way: Only collecting a toll in one direction is used to help reduce congestion in one direction, since generally, the toll is doubled, but you only pay one-way. In San Francisco, you pay your toll for both the Golden Gate and the Bay Bridge only on the SF-bound direction.
    One last note - I think you need to add a little bit of an arch back to your suspension span - the deck should curve up towards a peak in the middle, rather than be fully flat.

    • @JasonSTyler01
      @JasonSTyler01 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      bsquiklehausen To tack onto Jay’s good explanation, the toll paying side is usually (ie, not just San Francisco) into the city / more congested area so that congestion from the toll happens outside the city / denser traffic area. In other words, you’re already expecting more traffic in the city, so letting people exit the city without paying the toll helps relieve traffic in town. In NYC, for example, George Washington Bridge toll is on NJ side of the Hudson River so it relieves traffic in Manhattan, Verrazano bridge toll is on Staten Island side rather than in Brooklyn, etc.

    Having a science center doesnt make sense around a toll booth, especially one with a telescope. A science center like that would be more fit in an area far away from any lights, so the light pollution doesnt get in the way of viewing the night sky, and more often than not, they are on top of mountains for a good vantage point. i love the build and it looks amazing regardless, just wanting to help :)

    • @elcoyoto
      @elcoyoto 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I kinda agree, but I often use the regular telescope and "roleplay" what happened in my hometown where a nice observatory was built inside the city at a time where there weren't electric lights and that much pollution in the city. It's still there and although it now houses an astronomic data center, it's not used for observations any more and is open to the public, with shows and demonstrations by astronomers.

      It was built by the Germans (the whole neighbourhood in fact, called "Neustadt" ie "New city", with other official buildings and a brand new campus) after they annexed us in 1870 to make Strasbourg a shiny example of why we should prefer them over the French.
      Didn't work in the end (complicated story as Strasbourg was used as a propaganda tool by both the Germans and the French, but basically, we preferred being French) but the Neustadt is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

      the build looks really nice indeed! However, not only the light pollution but also the air pollution next to a highway and in particular a toll booth would be a problem, i.e. from emissions or the dust from the wear of tyres. Anyway, love your work two dollars twenty!

  • @brunoglopes
    @brunoglopes 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The one-way toll is actually pretty usual. You will very rarely see bridges or ferries with 2-way tolls. That is because tolls unavoidably create traffic, so it makes more sense to put it only in one of the ways. You pay round-trip for each time you pay the toll, that way there is less traffic and the government spends less money on building and maintaining expensive toll booths (with infrastructure and personnel).

    • @h.charleybodkin9201
      @h.charleybodkin9201 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, most people are mentioning the double charge on the round-trip, but it really is mainly the first reason you gave. But to take this point further, you usually will see the tolls on the direction going onto the bridge, not the other way, to avoid having people sit in traffic _on_ the bridge.
      It's a safety risk to have heavy traffic on the bridge, as opposed to having heavy traffic leading up to the bridge. This is for some obvious reasons, like traffic causing issues for construction workers, tow trucks, car accidents.
      I watched a video about the Verrazano Narrows Bridge recently, and there was an interview with the official in charge of the bridge and he said his number one priority was to keep traffic flowing across the bridge. So there is also a motivational incentive created by politics and bureaucracy. If something goes wrong on the toll-side, the officials in charge have lower stakes. If something goes wrong on the bridge-side, the governor is on the phone to the bridge officials.

    • @h.charleybodkin9201
      @h.charleybodkin9201 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, I'd imagine that if the bridge traffic ever is at a standstill, it could cause issues inherent to a bridge, like having people getting out of their cars and falling off the bridge (obviously not at the top of the list, but you clearly want to decrease the likelihood of any adverse affects).
      And if the bridge is a draw bridge or they need to close the bridge for high wind speeds, and you have a lot of traffic sitting, it makes your job harder.

  • @shadowfox4129
    @shadowfox4129 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The reason that one lane gets tolled in the Bay Area is because there is this system called “Fast Trak” where you pay to go in the Fast Trak lane on the highway where there is much less traffic. Like so Two Dollars Twenty can see

  • @willschedl4904

    Bay Area resident here: the two bridges into San Francisco proper (the Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate) and the bridges south of the city (San Mateo and Dumbarton) are only tolled westbound (or in the case of the Golden Gate, southbound), which takes you into the city. I think it’s done because most of their revenue is from people commuting anyway, so they don’t want to slow down traffic in both directions if they can just charge it once.

    The golden gate toll booth (and every toll booth in the Bay Area) is one way because they want to limit the traffic going into San Francisco and the peninsula and keep as many people possible leaving. If a toll booth led out of the city then the roads would get even more backed up than they already do to leave the city, adding more traffic that would ultimately be less profitable than it is to just get people out quicker

    The reason why the toll is on one side of the bridge is because you pay to go one Direction on the bridge but most likely you're going to come back the opposite direction to come home or your other destination... For example in new jersey, and New york you pay a toll on the Holland tunnel one direction, most likely you will come back the other way which mean you paid for both fairs the first time

  • @Chiaki747
    @Chiaki747 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's tolled only on one side since most people using the bridge are commuting. The rule of thumb is if you're leaving San Francisco, you don't have to pay the toll. I feel like this was done to keep traffic moving out of the dense city moving whereas there's more room for play outside fo the peninsula to set up toll queues. The tolls are steep though, Golden Gate is like $9 now and the Bay Bridge is $7 during peak hours.

    All of the bridges in the San Francisco Bay area are only tolled in one direction. The Golden Gate (south), Bay Bridge (west), San Mateo Bridge (west), and Dumbarton Bridge (west) are all tolled going toward San Francisco. The Richmond San Rafael Bridge (west) is tolled going toward San Rafael. The Carquinez Bridge is tolled north going to Vallejo. The Benecia Bridge is tolled north going to Benecia. And the Antioch Bridge is tolled north going to Rio Vista. We also have some tolled HOV lanes. All the bridges are $6 to cross, except the Golden Gate which is $8, and the Bay Bridge which is $5 off peak, $6 weekends, and $7 commute hours. And that's just car prices.

    I think it's looking great. I was expecting the bridge to start, more or less at the t-bone interchange and going over the industrial zone but it ended up to be a nice location for it. I think your first road layout around the toll booth was interresting. When I do stuff like that I usually ban all vehicule exept for emergency vehicule so that the traffic don't take short cut and find it realistic cuz I don't think police cars or fire trucks would go through the toll like other vehicule do. I'm looking foward to your new serie trailer and what you are gonna do in your industrial zone with the limited asset that you use.

    Most commuters are going to cross the bridge twice. It's not really worth it to have an additional toll booth only for the small amount of people who are only taking a one-way trip in the direction without the toll. Pretty logical.
    Yes you could avoid the toll by making a trip around the whole bay, but then you probably just spent more in gas than the toll you avoided. Not to mention time.

    There are some places where only one direction is being tolled such as the Severn Crossings between England and Wales where only the Wales-bound way was beeing charged. Apparantly this is because back when they had no bridges they had a ferry. The ferry was beeing based in England. If you wanted to cross from England you'd have to pay for the crossing but as the Ferry always had to come back (to its base) from Wales to England anyway this direction was free. Don't know if true or not but so I've been told.

    Actually most of the big tolled bridges I know are tolled one way only. Why: 1) cheaper to maintain, 2) less mess in traffic, 3) less problems with traffic management, 4) the same income as tolled both ways.

    I'm not from san francisco but I think its normal to only have a toll in one direction.
    For example I live near the Severn bridge in the UK, and the toll is only paid on the English side - if you're coming from the Welsh side you pay on the way back home instead.

    Can you maybe do a more rundown town / suburb close to Montana that just over the years couldn’t reach the same economic prosperity being so close to booming Montana? I think Stockton, CA would be a good inspiration..

    I assumed one way tolls were to really tax commuters. It’d be a jerk move if you had to pay a toll to go to work then AGAIN to go home. In a metropolitan region, especially if your suburbs will be on either side, trips should be double counted. This isn’t Simcity 5 where you live in one house, work in one place, move to another house at the end of the day haha

    At the very end, the road connecting piers goes underwater. In reality, the water crawls up onto the road. Anyway, whenever the height of the piers is visually perfect, they always gets flooded. What is the solution? Otherwise you place them high, but it looks like there are some kind of weird skyscrapers.

    • @twodollarstwenty
      @twodollarstwenty  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it was because I was messing with the water levels before. Hopefully it’s fixed now

      @@twodollarstwenty Thank you for replying, and I love your map details and your video in general. The thing is that whenever I place the piers considering boarding height to boats (just to make a realistic map), the flood still happens from time to time although without being a big deal. Just that it's a bit disturbing that the game lacks some realistic details. So I should maybe just let some drops on that connection roads.
      Ps. Regardless, I also love making evil tsunamis right after saving and right before I quit the game.

    You should replace the science center with the telescope unique building and put the science center near the university

    The big tree and the bridge are blocking the telescopes view and the birdge, the tollbooth and the whole highway would be to bright.

    maybe intersect some other building with that telescope. with the light pollution from the highway and the vibrations from decelerating cars, it won't make any good pictures.

    • @jdsiv3
      @jdsiv3 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The telescope looks good but the location isn't good. It should be higher up perhaps on the other side of the bay away from the light and noise
